Tatort Saarbrücken (Spatort) English subtitles - 2024 edition (episodes 1-5)
For all international fans who want to watch Tatort Saabrücken (of annual tumblr trending fame) but don't speak German, fear not:
Send me a DM and I can send you a link for English subs :)
(Please do not send asks as I can't post them publicly and I've had the unfortunate experience of privately posted ones eating links or disappearing into the tumblr void, never to be seen again...)
For return customers: as of today (04 Feb 2024) the newest episode (#5 - Der Fluch des Geldes (FdG)) is now live! The Drive link is still the same and the ReadMe has been updated as well, so check that out for links and guides as always.
And as always: THIS IS AN UNOFFICIAL FAN PROJECT THAT I DO AS A HOBBY - PLEASE DO NOT POST THE LINK OR THE FILES PUBLICLY!
More info under the cut
You can pass them along to other people privately (though please also ask them not to post them and to let anyone else they'd like to share them with know as well!), but I really don't want any beef with the channel (which is publicly funded and can afford far fancier lawyers than me, who is none-funded and can afford no lawyers) because these are not official in any capacity nor do I want to leave anyone with the impression that these could be official. They're a simple homemade attempt at letting non-German-speaking fans participate in the epic highs and lows of Spatort because there currently are no official English subtitles. Any mistakes are entirely my own, I don't own any of the copyrights to Tatort or any of their characters or plots, yadda yadda.
That being said, if you notice any typos, translation errors, missing or out of date links or anything else, please do let me know so I can update the files accordingly!
As I've gotten a few messages this year apologizing for being late: if anyone sees this in the future - yes, this is still up to date. You can shoot me a message at any time of the year and I will get back to you as soon as I can (usually within 24-48 h). If you still haven't heard from me after a week (especially if there's still new posts coming in on the blog) feel free to poke me again - I promise I'm not ignoring you, I most likely just haven't seen the notification.
If you want to filter spoilers for the new episode in the meantime, block #spatort spoilers to avoid seeing them on this blog (I generally use this tag for posts related to new episodes in between the official release and uploading the subtitles)
Heyyy I have a question, I've been meaning to get into Tatort Saarbrücken in order to better my German. What order should I watch the episodes in? The episodes aren't numbered on the ARD Mediathek website 😢
ohhh thanks for the ask and sorry for infecting you with the sad gay cop show hehe
So the order is
1. Das fleißige Lieschen
2. Der Herr des Waldes
3. Das Herz der Schlange
4. Die Kälte der Erde
5. Der Fluch des Geldes
And for the 6th one (which I think will be called Das Ende der Nacht) we'll have to wait another year 🥲
I'd advise you to turn on either German subtitles in the ARD Mediathek (bc sometimes the sound is shit and Germans also tend to mumble a lot) or ask @nerd-on-duty for the English subtitles (hope they're still active)
Also sometimes the ARD Mediathek takes the episodes down but you can find all of them here:
Hi! Sorry for this but I’m an American who has lived (and stans) Saarbrücken. Why is it trending on Tumblr 😭😭 My little German city is famous for what
Hi, I'm trying to explain it for you.
It's famous for it's Tatort.
"Tatort" is a weekly Sunday afternoon crime show (for boomers) that's been running since forever. Different teams investigate crimes in different cities.
The Saarbrücken team is quite young compared to the other teams and is (probably/hopefully/not canonically) quite gay and has a consistent dramatic backstory including the abusive criminal father of one of the main cops and a spade. There's so much personal drama and the crimes are just a small plot point to drive the character development. Here they are:
So far there have been 5 episodes and the latest aired yesterday.
Our fandom is crazy and super creative in terms of memes, fanfic, GIFs etc. so every year at the end of January it's wild when we're live blogging and processing the new episode.
You aren't the first one who's confused about all of this and it's really cool that we're able to trend our stupid German crime show every year and confuse unknowing Tumblr users.
There are some more detailed posts explaining the whole thing and I'm thankful if somebody could link to them in the comments.
I'm jealous that you've lived in Saarbrücken, you would probably spot some familiar places in the episodes, when you watch them.
Thanks for this ask, you can always come back if you need further information. ❤️
I'm not really familiar with how German media usually write male characters, if there's a real diversity of personalities, but I sure didn't expect him to say "yeah I'm soft *shrugs*" lol We're more used to men who would be offended in this type of situation, or would be sarcastic about it. Leo knows himself. He knows he has other strengths.
Mir schreiben ab und zu Leute, die wissen wollen wo man spatort mit subs gucken kann und ich meine mich zu erinnern, dass das jemand hier auf tumblr gepostet hat, oder? Pls let me know, damit ich das weitergeben kann🫶

For all international fans who want to watch Tatort Saabrücken (of annual tumblr trending fame) but don't speak German, fear not:
send me a DM and I can send you a link for the english subs. :)
(I normally respond within a day or two, so if you haven't heard from me a week after you sent your message, please feel free to send another one! Sometimes my DMs get a bit flooded and I don't see everyone, I promise I'm not ignoring you!)
As of today, the most recent episode (#4 - Die Kälte der Erde) is finished as well.
And for all the people who already have the link, it's in the same folder as the other ones.
(Btw, if you'd like me to make full CC versions as well, just send me a message and I'll be happy to do so!)
Also, this is your annual friendly reminder to please not post the link publicly :)
EDIT (24 Sep 2023): I am still active on here - if you'd like the link, simply shoot me a message! If you don't hear from me within a week or two feel free to send me a gentle reminder, I probably just opened the message and the notification indicator went away.
Also, if any of the episode links become inactive do let me know and I'll get on fixing it asap! :) So far I've always found alternatives, but since I don't personally check them every month I don't always notice right away if there's anything wrong with them.

Heya, guys. I wrote English Subtitles for the Polizeiruf 110 episode “Der Gott des Bankrotts” (The God of Bankruptcy).
Here are the links to the different file formats:
- .xml (looks best in my opinion. has colors and alignments)
- .vtt (common format. has colors and alignments)
- .srt (simplest format. no colors or alignments but every player should be able to handle it. might be hard to differentiate the active speaker)
You can download the video file here:
- MediathekViewWeb: Der Gott des Bankrotts
To use the subtitles I recommend using VLC Player (Select “All Files (*)” when selecting file to see the .xml file).
Let me know if any of the links aren’t working and I’ll fix it.
Also please tell me if there are any mistakes or weird sentence structures. I think I did some translations too directly and the German grammar might shine through. I also wrote a parser to convert .xml subtitles to the other two formats but didn’t watch the episode another two times to see if everything is still correct.
