Takarazuka Special 2018- Say! Hey! Show Up!
Man, am I lucky to be able to see so many incredible things in Japan. Under the cut are all the thoughts I had about this year’s TCA special! Forewarning- they’re hardly cohesive, they’re very personal and biased, they’re SUPER LONG because I’m not writing this for anyone in particular or editing it whatsoever, and they’re whatever came to mind between the two showings or while waiting at intermissions!
The Beni/Tamakichi/Mirio/Daimon group is like. Something else. You put all four of them up there and they split off into FACTIONS, and it turns out to be Beni vs. Everyone which melts into Beni and Tamakichi vs. Daimon and Mirio and by that I mean if Beni and Tamakichi are teasing Daimon and Mirio MAN can those two sweet, sweet women not hold up. Beni is a troll. Beni is relentless. I’d call her a predator to Mirio and Daimon’s prey. The teasing never ended- but to that end, the laughter never ended either, and honestly, I loved them. I loved it. They were all charming and they all shone and the way their personalities differ (OOH do their PERSONALITIES DIFFER) was the most obvious and beautiful thing in the world. We have a FUN set of top stars, y’all. It was nice to see them all together.*
*I missed Makaze for a lot of reasons, most notably: 1.) she would have made for another great target for Beni to give hell to, and 2.) there were a lot of silk, deep, deep v-necks, and it’s kinda cruel to leave Makaze out of that, don’t you think. See you next year, Soragumi. Your energy was missed.
Daimon can’t eat gluten??? She certainly didn’t eat any bread in France, which has everyone including me pretty aghast.
Tamakichi used to? Swim? Play HANDBALL? They for sure teased her about being in the Olympics at the noon showing, but that’s as far as my Japanese got me. Makes sense though because have you seen her shoulders?
Sorry I need to say AGAIN how much Beni Ran This Shit. She IS the oldest top right now, by a year to Daimon and Mirio and like...more years to Makaze and MORE years to Tamakichi, and I’m sure that’s part of it, but I think the other part is that she’s a natural born emcee and comedian and she knows it. When I watch Beni I think ‘oh my God I love you so much for so many reasons,’ I love that woman. That’s my top star. But then MAN, I can ABSOLUTELY SEE how those reasons might make someone else feel the exact opposite. She also like applied herself for a bunch of this show and oooohhhhh it’s so lovely when she does.
Tamakichi asked Mirio and Beni to talk about going to Taiwan, and they sung the little ditty that I don’t know the name of but clearly is done every time they go to Taiwan because they both knew it. Beni also spoke some Chinese for the Taiwanese live viewing audience.
There was also talk about why they all chose their final songs, how their years went and what each troupe did, and some general banter.
Aside from the Top Stars and Todoroki Yuu, no one really spoke. The Top Musumeyaku certainly didn’t talk. To be TOTALLY HONEST, as far as this live viewing went at least, unless you’re Top Star, nibante, Top Musumeyaku, or Kacha/Hanagata Hikaru/Akira/Kai you don’t seem to have TOO MUCH camera time. Still thankful for the fact that they do the live viewings! But it IS tough to spot your whoever-else, unless they’re doing their little solos.
Moving on from our lovely Top Stars, here’s the quick-n-dirty lowdown on what stood out to me in the show!  (I’m sorry if I missed your favorite, there were a lot of people, a lot going on, and I’m REALLY biased towards watching certain people.)
Miya had a lot of great stuff. She and Saki both had some funky songs with acoustic accompaniment. Saki’s had kind of a Western vibe. (Like cowboys, not like Western Hemisphere.)
Sorry, back to Miya, I really really hope she hangs on to top. She has her act together. She knows what she’s doing onstage, she’s pretty polished, and I personally really really dig the general tone of her voice, especially when she goes a little high.
I saw the show twice. Both times, when Coto came on for her solos, whoever the person next to me was like SLOW NODDED. Same, seat neighbors. God she’s good. She’s looking a lot more grown up!  She’s CUTE. I’m kinda obsessed! I can’t like compliment Coto enough. Y’all know how good she is. She stands out just because she’s THAT GOOD.
Maaya Kiho. Maaaaaya. Maaya, come back to Hoshigumi so I can see you every day of my life. That girl has SOMETHING SPECIAL. Her energy is unique and a little aggressive but flirtatious? She has one of my favorite voices in the company, hands down. She knows how to work that like specific musumeyaku sexuality but you can kind of totally tell she also wanted to be an otokoyaku. She has that IN her. I love Maaya. I want to listen to like four hours of just Maaya.
If I had to listen to something else for four hours, it would be Ari singing Yami Ga Hirogaru.
If I had to listen to something ELSE it might be Aasa because her voice is definitely UNIQUE in a way that really pleases me.
I also want to quickly shoutout to Tom for running as much of this as she did- and I want to comment that I like....like her voice. It has a REALLY unique quality to it now. She’s really interesting to listen to, and she’s still truckin’!
I want Mao Yuuki and Mikkii to stand exclusively next to each other for as long as they’re both in Hoshi because that height difference is SOMETHING else.
Speaking of Mikkii, I’d like to challenge everyone who records and edits anything for the rest of her time in Takarazuka to actually put the camera on her for more than .9 seconds, because she is ON TO SOMETHING REAL. Tenju Mitsuki is always on. Whether or not you particularly care for what she’s doing, everything she does is done with 100% follow through and intention, she has a target, she isn’t doing anything superfluous or pointless with her body. She’s SHARP. Tenju Mitsuki is a fantastic performer and I really want to see more of it.
Speaking of fantastic performers, shoutouts to Coto (sorry, duh), Daimon, and Maaya for being magnetic in the same 100% followthrough, target, intention way. What incredible performers.
Yuki and Tamakichi sang OKLAHOMA and while I thought I knew what heartbreak felt like, it turns out I didn’t until I realized that we won’t ever get Tamakichi/Yuki Oklahoma.
Daimon and Sakura’s Climb Every Mountain was NICE.
I love these Top Musumeyaku Very Much. It’s almost dumb to say but God they just all bring such different things and personalities and voices to the table.
Welcome to Top, Misono Sakura. It’s good to see you. <3
Senna Ayase has Got It. She rocks. She has a lot of power and she led her musumeyaku in something really sassy and nice and I just want to say that man, I hope she loves her post-Takarazuka life.
I want to compliment Maitii on everything and mourn the fact that she isn’t leading everything, honestly.
There was a kind of long but not too long In Memoriam Section featuring the Top Musumeyaku all speaking for a few seconds and then mostly senka members + Kai + Akira with vocal solos all in white.
I never want to see another musumeyaku’s dress dragging on the ground. Someone almost Ate It when her dress got caught on something at the edge of the stage. Please. Keep our musumeyaku upright. Hemming things isn’t that hard.
Wow, Tsukigumi is fun. I also literally can not fathom HOW Baddy was THIS YEAR. As a whole they just have a really fun, kinda off-the-cuff energy that I find very endearing.
Shimon led Chaos Paradise, which, if you’re me, was one of the most satisfying things in the world.
Tamakichi is so beautifully EARNEST in a way that really suits all the golden age musicals she’s been getting. Maybe we CAN cross our fingers for Oklahoma...
From now on I’m formally requiring 8-10 business days to prepare for hearing Inochi from Gaisenmon because I didn’t walk into Hey! Say! Show Up! expecting to get chills and feel the weight of the Human Condition on my shoulders.
Shoutout to Yukigumi for replacing the ‘Nya!!’ at the end of Gato Bonito! with ...whatever sound they were approximating to imitate a wild boar. Happy New Year, everyone!
Irodori Michiru is just really cute and I love looking at her.
Thank you Kai for your golden hair and 16 Year Strong insistence on being .3 seconds behind on choreography because you prefer being ~languid~ to being ~sharp~ because you sure were easy to find.
No amount of exclamation points, keysmashing, or attempts to describe it can make you understand how I felt when the music to Jump! from Oceans 11 started up, or when RUSTY was played by Kai. That was a dream come true. Nothing less.
On that note, KAI SANG RAIMEI TOO, so I feel like God really Was looking out for Her Fans this Takaspecial. Thanks, God.
Everyone’s medley started out with the Top Star singing something earnest or Powerful or Big, but our very own Kurenai Yuzuru elected to open up with SPECIFICALLY the doki doki waku waku bit from Another World. The audience loved it. I loved it. I love Beni and I love Hoshigumi and I love that they included Arigataya, Nanmaida from Another World also and I love that Kai was hopping around as Kiroku again with the biggest smile on her face and I love that we got to hear Coto’s PIPES and I love that the audience was clapping for Killer Rouge and I love Killer Rouge and I love the ENERGY THAT troupe has.
Seo Yuria. Seooooo. Seooocchi. Get that fear out of your eyes, sweet thing. You have such a SMILE when you let yourself and your voice is THERE and you’re about to step into some big big shoes. Let yourself have this.
Rei and Saki are both coming into their own vibes! I’m excited to see where they go from here.
Shoutout to Shidou Ryuu for getting WAY more screentime than intended because she was planted half a foot to the right and directly behind Tom at pretty much all times. Good to see you, Shidou!
The best thing about seeing people from different troupes performing together in any number is like....no one is quite WITH EACH OTHER. Like MAYBE your weird idiosyncrasies fit in well with your troupe, but they sure don’t fit with the weird stuff your neighbor is doing. It’s charming and it’s sweet and I LOVE seeing it.
I didn’t think I’d cry either but tears DID spring to my eyes when Kai bowed.
I would like to formally petition Takarazuka Forever to FOLLOW Sumire no Hana in encores because Sumire no Hana is kinda a downer and Takarazuka Forever is an upper but that’s personal preference.
They wished the audience Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in ENGLISH which felt like an extra treat.
I didn’t mention every single actress in this (I’m sorry if I missed yours!! It’s so hard to remember everything and watch everyone when there are such weird combinations of actresses on the stage etc.), but God, I can honestly and truly say that to me, they all shone.  Everyone is so different and everyone is working so hard. Every person who had a solo did it with everything they had, and it was beautiful to say. While watching Saki and Tamakichi, the thought came to me that entertainers- people who choose to use their lives to make other people happy- are just so special. These women are all such hard working performers and dedicated individuals and the life they put into giving us this thing is incredible. I feel so lucky to even be able to say that I do what they do. Not with HALF the skill or talent but this was one of those shows that made me think. Oh. We are so lucky to do this. The world is so lucky to have this art form. Musical theatre really is the most wonderful thing in the world, to me.
If more comes to me later, I’ll add it after the cut, but this is already 80 pages long and I’ve exhausted my phone notes. If you read this far, thanks and I’m impressed! I’m HAPPY to tell you more specifics about things if you want to ask, I can try to scrape my brain for whatever’s in there.
Thanks for a beautiful 2018 in Takarazuka, everyone.  Happy New Year! May 2019 bring us beautiful things we could never have expected!

People don’t want to admit that Riverdale isn’t doing well and that season 5 was their kill shot because it benefits them. It’s undeniable that Riverdale isn’t doing well anymore and it doesn’t have the audience power as it used to have. They used to dominate in the TCAs, PCAs and MTV TV & Movie Awards. I remember when Madelaide won Scene Stealer in 2018 against pretty well known actors so it really proved the voting power the show had. In 2019, the most awarded at TCAs were Avengers Endgame and Riverdale with them taking best show and Lili/Cole for actor/actress respectively. BAs like to argue "Riverdale started losing viewership on season 3 when those couples existed" like, of course it did, that’s the natural professing of shows when they get to the 3-4 seasons like any normal show but the drop was minimal and the public was there making noise and selling out Paley Fest. The drop was normal specially when Riverdale's highest peak was season 2 both in audience and public relevance, it doesn’t say anything about VA or BH likability with the public because BH was a big reason why season 2 because so successful. The last nominations for Riverdale were in late 2020 for Best Drama TV Show and Cole/Lili.
Like, we know by the nominations along that Lili and Cole (BH, by extension) acted as the face of the show in many of those awards so not only was separating them a big mistake but also season 5 was just terrible. You can’t blame the pandemic for it because a lot of shows blow up during pandemic because people were watching anything on streaming services and a lot of old shows went trending because of it. Riverdale barely trends in Netflix or social media, don’t get nominations anymore and the views are under 200K now. The other big show on Riverdale was TVD, the views dropped a lot when Nina Dobrev left but even they didn’t drop this bad when it was almost over – their season FINALE on 2017 was 1.9M views and remained consistently around the 700k-800k mark.
Tumblr media
Anons, I hear you and I agree with you, but I also have messages like this in my inbox, should you be wondering if people really do think the show is doing fine:
Tumblr media
The thing is, continuing this way, this show won't have a shelf life. The rewatchability is the thing it's not too late to protect now, so it has to be the priority. My recommendation to the show is to give the fans exactly what they want for the last season. The majority of fans, not the crazy antis that invade our inboxes.
And yes, the show is not doing well. This is just a fact. I've long said that some ebb and flow in the ratings is normal, and it is. This isn't ebb and flow. They went from 700k a year ago to not even 200k now. In total, they're down about a million + viewers from their heyday. They get no nominations for anything, sell out no fan conventions, and have disappeared off streaming. That's not normal ebb and flow. The show is dying, and it is absolutely taking everyone's career down with it. You can literally see that in the actors' upcoming projects.

Gillovny timeline 2018 (part 1/2)
I usually post the timeline every six months, so I’m a little late this year, but here it is, right before the first Gillovny Con of the year!
As usual, feel free to tell me if I forgot something!
Here’s the full timeline since 2016

Walk of Fame
January 8th:
- David couldn’t be at Gillian’s ceremony but he left her a sweet message. “Gillian, you said you would be next to me when you died, too. Well, you were right. But this isn’t death, it’s a beginning. So much more to come for you. In the meantime, I hope your fans sprinkle chocolate on your star the occasional Hollywood midnight and some kind soul builds a Gilly ramp from your star to mine. We will always be joined as partners, friends, and neighbors. Congratulations Gillian. Love, David” (watch the full ceremony)
- A guy made both Gillian and David sign a picture of them at their respective ceremonies. Here’s what happened.
- David liked a tweet with an “heart-eyes emoji” and the picture of Gillian’s star ceremony. (source)

ESPECIAL TIME: As you like it - Ayanagi Shou and Miya Rurika
ESPECIAL TIME is a long-running invitation talk feature in GRAPH, where one sienne is given the opportunity to invite someone else.
Ayanagi Shou’s feature, where she invited Miya Rurika, was published in the February 2018 issue.
There is also an outtake from the feature that was printed in the back of the magazine.
ESPECIAL TIME: As you like it - Ayanagi Shou and Miya Rurika
Miya: Thank you for inviting me today!
Ayanagi: No, no, thank you!
Miya: I’m really honored. This came as such a surprise…
Ayanagi: A while back, for a different assignment, I had a chance to request someone to do a talk with, so I really struggled over whether to ask you, Miya-san. We had talked a little bit in the green room and during the TCA Special, but…
Miya: (listening to Ayanagi’s accent) Oh? You’re from Kansai!
Ayanagi: Yes, I am. Did it slip out? (laughs)
Miya: Yes, but you don’t really look like you’re from Kansai. Ah, sorry, go ahead!
Ayanagi: (laughs) I have the impression of Miya-san as a ‘cool beauty’ type.
Miya: Ahaha (laughs)
Ayanagi: Therefore, at the time, I thought ‘I would be so nervous if I had to talk one-on-one with her!’ and gave up on the idea. But the next day, I heard that Miya-san had also put my name on your list of potential guests, and that made me really happy. So when I was given this talk feature, even though I was a little scared…
Miya: (bursts out laughing)
Ayanagi: I gathered my courage and requested you as my guest!
Miya: Thank you, I’m really happy. Of course, since we’re in different troupes, even though we’ll chat briefly if we end up going to a show at the same time, or if we run into each other in the hallways of the rehearsal space, but we don’t really know much about each other’s ways of thinking and such.
Ayanagi: Exactly.
Miya: We’ve had chances to talk once in a while, but I think the first time must have been when you were assigned the role of Mercutio (main cast: Sagiri Seina) in the shinjin kouen of Romeo et Juliette. We definitely talked about something. But it was so long ago I’ve totally forgotten!
Ayanagi: (laughs) I remember Miya-san speaking to me when I was ken-1 or -2. You had come to the rehearsal room to talk to your classmate Renjou (Makoto)-san, and when I passed through you said something like ‘Oh, that girl’s so pretty~’!
Miya: Did I!?
Ayanagi: I was so surprised that Miya-san would say something like that about me that I went over to you without even thinking about it (laughs)!
Miya: (laughs) Right, I always thought of you as being really pretty. Therefore, when the gossip that ‘Ayanagi Shou is going to be Mercutio!’ reached me, I was so happy. ‘She’ll be so beautiful!’ I said (laughs).
Ayanagi: No way, no (laughs).
Miya: I wasn’t able to see that shinjin kouen, so I ended up devouring the stage photos that were published in GRAPH and Kageki.
Ayanagi: Ehhhh~ (laughs). After that, you played Mercutio too, in Moon Troupe. And also Bernard from The Rose of Versailles.
Miya: Right, right. We’ve played the same roles which gives us a bit of a connection.
Ayanagi: Right now, in A Passage Through the Light: Revolutionary Maximilen Robespierre, I’m playing a female role. I thought the female roles Miya-san has played up until now were very beautiful and fascinating, so I thought that this might be a good opportunity to talk about that.
Miya: But this isn’t your first time, is it?
Ayanagi: I did [a female role] once in Nijinsky…
Miya: Ah, I saw that on DVD! You were so pretty. How was it? I think it comes with a sort of complicated feeling that only otokoyaku playing female roles can understand. Therefore, I ended up wondering what your mental state was for this role. After all, for the first show of the New Moon Troupe, La Legende du Roi Arthur, I ended up playing a witch (laughs).
Ayanagi: Ah, that was so amazing~
Miya: It was at a time when the troupe was being reformed, and I was also dealing with feeling like I had to renew myself… Looking back on it now, there was a lot of value to it, and I learned a lot, but it was a bit disconcerting for a moment (laughs). Shou-chan, you’re also doing it for Daimon’s (Nozomi’s) debut show, so how does that feel?
Ayanagi: My last show was the national tour, Nozomi-san’s pre-debut. During that time, I felt ‘Being an otokoyaku is so fun!’ once again really strongly, and I was thinking ‘I’m going to go for it in the next Grand Theatre show too!’, so at the start I was rather conflicted about it.
Miya: Ah, that’s understandable.
Ayanagi: But my role in this show is that of a strong-willed woman who can be on an equal footing with any of the men. I can use some aspects of being an otokoyaku in that as well, so I felt ‘if I’m doing this I should make the best of it!’ and now I am having a lot of fun.
Miya: See, there’s a lot of meaning when an otokoyaku plays a female role. Sorry, I haven’t actually seen the show yet so I just have to imagine (laughs).
Ayanagi: (laughs)
Miya: I’ve played female roles about 4 times now, so that’s always been something that encourages me. But now that it’s like the 4th time, it sort of feels like a party trick and I find it really fun (laughs).
Ayanagi: A party trick! (laughs)
Miya: But it really widens your horizons, right? I’m the sort of person who feels like doing pretty-boy roles all the time is a bit boring, and a while back when Shou-chan played Takeda Kanryuu in Rurouni Kenshin I felt like you really came alive in that role. I thought ‘from now on she’s going to keep broadening her outlook and become a really interesting performer’.
Ayanagi: Takeda Kanryuu was definitely from a totally different category than any other  role I had ever played. At first I couldn’t even picture myself doing it, but once the curtain went up on the first day I started to have more and more fun with it.
Miya: There’s the reaction from the audience, too.
Ayanagi: Right, I suppose I was swept along by that a bit, too. So I came to really like playing that role. I think this time around I’m also picking up new skills that will be useful later.
Ayanagi: Recently, when we were both in the TCA Special, you told me “you don’t have to fuss over me so much”...
Miya: Oh, I did, I did! We were always standing right next to each other, right. So we were always chatting during rehearsals, and even when we were getting to standby for the real performance, I knew that as long as I was next to Shou-chan I’d be in the right place (laughs).
Ayanagi: (laughs)
Miya: I’m really bad at getting places and times right, you see (laughs). But really, you were so attentive to me! Even if I was just making a casual remark you’d make sure it was clear ‘I’m listening!’ and you’d ask “Are you okay if I’m standing in this spot?”
Ayanagi: Was I really?
Miya: Yeah. Didn’t you think so?
Ayanagi: No~ I didn’t really notice…
Miya: I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, of course, but when you’re there at such an amazing event I wouldn’t want you to spend your time fussing over me just because I’m your senior. It would ruin the fun during the show, I thought.
Ayanagi: Ah~
Miya: I used to be like that a long time ago. My classmates would be in front giving it their all and I’d be holding myself back behind them, like, ‘is it ok if I just dance over here?’. But now I feel like that was a bit of a waste so I regret doing that, and I wouldn’t want you to do that either. Besides, aren’t you pretty senior yourself now?
Ayanagi: That’s true. So now I’m just stressed out internally. I’m not the type of person to be able to keep everyone else in line, you see…
Miya: Is that so! Even though you’re so precise about everything?
Ayanagi: I really struggle. I don’t have confidence in myself, so I can’t say anything to the junior actresses…
Miya: I also used to be really bad with that. After all, I’m so bad at keeping track of things that I had to rely on Shou-chan to end up in the right place in rehearsals (laughs).
Ayanagi: Now, now (laughs).
Miya: So how am I supposed to know what everyone else is supposed to be doing, you know? (laughs) So in situations where I’m the most senior member in a particular scene they’ll tell me to get everyone in order, but I don’t have my own placing and choreography down (laughs).
Ayanagi: I know that feeling (laughs).
Miya: So I have to get in to the midset of ‘I’m the most senior here, so I’ll put aside everything about myself and say what I have to say!’
Ayanagi: I see. Whenever I state my opinion firmly, right afterwards I’ll start feeling really insecure, so I’ll end by asking the people around me “~don’t you think?” (laughs)
Miya: I get that. I’ll also be like “~and that’s what I think, you know!” and push some of the responsibility on whoever is next to me (laughs).
Ayanagi: (laughs) I always thought Miya-san would be a really forceful, determined type.
Miya: Totally opposite! As a yokasei I was the type to hide in everyone else’s shadow all the time.
Ayanagi: Me too (laughs).
Miya: But recently, when I saw Shou-chan’s scene in the national tour of “D”ramatic S!, I thought you had a completely different atmosphere from anything before.
Ayanagi: Eh~!?
Miya: When it’s a scene that you’re the center of, don’t you feel like you need to pursue something more than just technicality, and leave something behind after you leave the stage? I thought your desire to convey that was really clear, and it was really amazing.
Ayanagi: That’s so much…
Miya: I felt like you really had the strength to bring everyone along with you as well. Therefore, I hope the junior actresses will keep following your good example too.
Ayanagi: Thank you! I’ll do my best!
Ayanagi: I’ve always loved Miya-san’s fashion! When there were pictures of Miya-san published in NEW GENERATION or things like that, I’d always be like ‘I wonder where those clothes came from?’ and investigate (laughs).
Miya: (laughs)
Ayanagi: And then after that, when I was in NEW GENERATION II myself, I thought ‘I’m sure I was mimicking Miya-san!’ and so yesterday I went and compared both of them at home. And it turned out I was wearing a belt from the same brand as Miya-san’s (laughs).
Miya: (bursts out laughing) That’s so cute~ It makes me really happy to hear things like that.
Ayanagi: Are there things you reference a lot for fashion?
Miya: Recently I don’t really read magazines. I used to really try to follow fashion, but as the time went on, I started to feel like what I actually wanted to wear was something different to that. Wandering around stores without looking at any information and then wearing whatever makes me think ‘This is it!’ is what really makes my heart happiest.
Ayanagi: Makes your heart happy (laughs)
Miya: Exactly (laughs). Therefore, recently, if I go to a fashion mall, say, I’ll visit all the stores that look like they have the sort of things I might not normally wear.
Ayanagi: Hmmm~
Miya: And then I’ll make snap decisions. I don’t agonize over anything. I’ll try something on and then I’ll be like ‘Yes! I’m buying this!’ (laughs). It takes me about an hour to make it through each floor.
Ayanagi: That’s so fast!
Miya: Well, I’m not able to go shopping very often. Only once a season.
Ayanagi: What, really!?
Miya: See, Shou-chan, you can drive, right?
Ayanagi: Yes, I drive sometimes.
Miya: I don’t have a license, so it’s a big deal to go out shopping.
Ayanagi: Well then, I can drive you!
Miya: Thank you (laughs).
Ayanagi: I just want to go along (laughs). I want you to help me with outfits~
Miya: I love picking out clothes for other people too! Let’s do it!
Ayanagi: In your precious once-per-season shopping trip (laughs).
Miya: Yeah (laughs). And in return we can use your car (laughs).
Ayanagi: Leave it to me (laughs). I always feel like you’re so good at putting together a lot of different clothing pieces.
Miya: Ah~ I do like thinking about that kind of thing.
Ayanagi: I don’t understand much about doing that, so I always just copy Miya-san (laughs).
Miya: (laughs) Well, you can ask me for advice any time, even if it’s not an assignment I have anything to do with!
Ayanagi: Thank you so much! (laughs)
Miya: Takarazuka otokoyaku are a bit restricted in clothing. But if you think about it even things that look like they wouldn’t work at all can be put together with other things and look like proper otokoyaku style. So I’ll often try going into even very girly stores.
Ayanagi: Oh~
Miya: That way sometimes I’ll find really interesting accessories, or ‘boyfriend’ style clothes. Do you like clothes?
Ayanagi: I do, I go shopping a lot. But if there are too many people around…
Miya: That’s exhausting, isn’t it. I’ll just go to get tea instead (laughs).
Ayanagi: I can’t go to tea by myself.
Miya: Eh!? Then, when you’re shopping by myself what do you do!?
Ayanagi: I’ll keep walking no matter how tired I get, and then I’ll have something to drink in my car on the way home…
Miya: I’ll go to sushi by myself.
Ayanagi: Ehhhh~!?
Miya: When I think ‘I’m too hungry to go any further!’ I’ll go get sushi. (laughs)
Ayanagi: That’s so cool! I’d be so surprised to see you eating sushi alone (laughs).
Miya: I really like sushi. I’ll eat it even if I’m alone (laughs).
Ayanagi: Well, if we go out together sometime…
Miya: Let’s get sushi! Since you won’t be alone (laughs).
Ayanagi: If I’m not alone then I can go (laughs). Breakfast during the national tour was really difficult. I couldn’t bring myself to go to the hotel’s breakfast bar if I was alone (laughs).
Miya: Eh~!? But what about going to the theatre cafeteria by yourself?
Ayanagi: No way, no way (laughs).
Miya: Huh!?
Ayanagi: Not even the Sumire Kitchen*.
Miya: What! But isn’t it harder to go to the Sumire Kitchen when you’re with someone else!?
Ayanagi: It is, but still…
Miya: I see… But not even going out to tea by yourself is a real problem. Why don’t you make that your goal for this year?
Ayanagi: I guess…
Miya: This year’s goal: Solo sushi (laughs)
Ayanagi: Hey, wait, sushi is too high-level (laughs).
Miya: Alright, tea then!
Ayanagi: I’ll do my best!
Miya: That’s so surprising~ My impression during Takarazuka Special was that you were a really independent person. But I’m glad to be able to discover new sides to you.
Ayanagi: Yes! Up until now I’ve been using you as an example to follow in a lot of things, but today I was finally able to talk in-depth with you.
Miya: Yeah! That’s great!
Ayanagi: Next time I’d really like it if you could help me with putting together outfits!
Miya: We can go shopping together. If we make that a reality let’s take a picture and have it put up in GRAPH (laughs).
Ayanagi: We can get tea and go to a sushi place (laughs). Thank you so much!
Outtake:
Ayanagi: Miya-san, your cat is so cute!
Miya: It’s great to have her there when I get home exhausted after a rehearsal. It really helps me get over that.
Ayanagi: I wish I could have a dog. When I have a day off I’ll go to pet shops.
Miya: To look at them? That’s so cute~! (laughs)
Ayanagi: But if I had one, I don’t think I’d ever leave my house again…
Miya: I get the feeling. But I’ll go home early, and rehearse there. I’ll go through the whole revue all alone. In front of my cat.
Ayanagi: (laughs)
Miya: Although she’ll just react like ‘What the heck are you doing now?’ (laughs) So recently I haven’t been rehearsing very thoroughly (laughs).
* The Sumire Kitchen is a cafeteria in the Grand Theatre that is open only to Takarasiennes and OGs.

Teen Choice Awards 2018 - Camren
Today is the TCAs and I’m not coming. I have to be with Taylor for the Reputation Tour. Although I can manage to go to the TCAs but Roger told me not to. He already knew that Lauren will be presenting there and he wants me to avoid any possible encounter with her like what happened last year with Jingle Ball.
I am here in my hotel room at New York laying down while reading stuffs on tumblr. More specifically, Camren. I know that Lauren doesn’t like the idea of it knowing that she’s more of a private person, I still find it cute when she was annoyed when a fan freaked out and gushed over our ship name. I am watching a fan made video when Shawn’s name appears on my screen.
“Hello?” I said annoyed because he’s interrupting me.
“Yow Camila, I’m coming over do you want me to bring pizza?” He asked playfully and there’s no way that I would say no.
“Duhh, it is required you bring something I like whenever you are bugging me” I jokingly said.
“Woah, seems like you were pretty busy huh? Is that the camren thing again?” Shawn asked me and he knew the fact that I really want Lauren, until now.
“Asshole” I said with a grin on my face.
“Ayt Camz, gotta go” he said mischievously knowing the nickname only Lauren gave to me.
“Shut your mouth and you know only one person can call me that” I immediately ended the call because I don’t feel talking to people right now. Shawn is so used with me and he knows whenever it is a good time or not.
We are sitting here on my bed watching TV while we eat the remaining slice of pizza that Shawn brought. We let the time pass while binge watching movies in Netflix and I laughed so hard when we finished watching A Walk to Remember because Shawn looked so brokenhearted and cried hard so I just hugged him to calm him down.
“How can you watch these kind of movies Camila?” He asked wiping his tears.
“I just got used to it” I answered with a smile on my face.
Reputation Tour is about to start and TCA is done. I watched earlier that Lauren won 2 TCAs as a Choice Female Hottie and Choice Electronic/Dance Song. I saw the photos and her outfit is perfectly matching her toned body and her green orbs are electrifying.
Loving you was dumb, dark and cheap Loving you still takes shots at me Found loving you was sunshine, but then it poured And I lost so much more than my senses 'Cause loving you had consequences
Singing the last part of my song, suddenly a tear stream down my face. The last part that I wrote was a very personal feeling for me knowing that I was drained during those times when Lauren kept on pushing me away. When we were both hurting because people are fully aware of what we can’t admit to ourselves. When I think of those times, I was extremely hurting and my heart felt like broken so many times, but when I think of it now, there’s still a feeling but not pain. All I felt was happiness knowing that I felt that way and before Lauren and I went on our separate ways, we are still in good terms but no communication.
The show already ended, Taylor and her crew went back to the hotel first then my parents got dinner plans and Roger has an appointment, I am left alone to go back to the hotel. I was about to drive away when someone stood in front of my car, I studied the features and when I reached those eyes, I realized that it was the person that I’m thinking all day.
“Hey” I greeted her while getting out of my car.
“Hi, how are you?” the raspy voice replied.
“I’m fine, I guess?” I answered but more likely a question, knowing Lauren that she knows me, she definitely had an idea of what I’m really feeling. She moved closer to me for our eyes to meet.
“I know you’re not. I saw your performance earlier. The last song caused you tears and I know that song is so special to you. Look Camz, I know you. I know that I caused an extreme pain in you. You are also aware how sorry I am right?” I nodded in agreement because she had a breakdown before apologizing for me.
“Camz, I missed you. I was disappointed that you weren’t coming for TCAs that’s why I came here to see you because I can’t keep on suppressing my feelings anymore. It fucks me up bigtime.” She said piercing her green eyes into mine with sincerity.
“What about Ty? What about Matthew?” I asked her because this PR will be over once we tell other people or worse, our career will have to come to an end.
“Fuck them, fuck the management. Camz we are not their puppets; we are not a show that needs to be directed or demanded on what we should do. Camz I love you” Hearing those words from the person that I love is so overwhelming. Lauren has grown so much and now she’s willing to fight for me, for us. All the words that she said needs no reply so I gained my composure and leaned in to kiss her. I can feel her soft lips into mine and the kiss is slow and full of care savoring this special moment that we have now.
“I love you too, Lolo” I replied back after our kiss.
-Lol I know it sucks!! I’m thinking to continue or not but.. idk lol. I was bored at work so this happened : )

Disclaimer
Some people are ruining the TCA experience for many fandoms by circulating slanderous claims that certain youtubers have profited from.
People misconstrue the disclaimer. Older disclaimers from past shows were misconstrued out of context when they were referring to a specific category like Ultimate Choice or the Acuvue Inspiration Award or Choice Decade award which are only solely decided by producers because those special categories were not fan-voted. For all of the other categories, the producers actually do tabulate the votes and screen them via a committee. That is what is legally mandated. All fan-voted shows are the same.
A  panel of executives base their decisions on the voting, buzz, and fandom campaigns that are circulated. No fandom knows which nominee had the most votes since the official voting on the website does not have publicly visible results. Twitter is only part of the voting and the samples don’t always reflect the total number of votes. So fandoms need to be mature and stop throwing out accusations if you are upset that your fave lost. Bottom line, unless you know somebody who works for the TCA....you do NOT know which nominee had the most overall votes!
https://www.fox.com/teen-choice/
https://www.fox.com/teen-choice/article/voting-rules-5b2141e29fe15c002d2e9579/
“Winners of Teen Choice 2018 are determined using the votes cast on the Site and on Twitter. Votes are tabulated electronically and winners are determined based on the nominees in each category with the highest number of eligible votes.  Tweets must NOT contain subject matter which is, in the sole discretion of Producer, FOX and/or Telescope, sexually explicit, obscene, pornographic, violent (e.g., relating to murder, the sales of weapons, cruelty, abuse, etc.), discriminatory (e.g., based on race, sex, religion, natural origin, physical disability, sexual orientation or age), illegal (e.g., underage drinking, substance abuse, computer hacking, etc.), offensive, threatening, profane or harassing. Tweets must NOT include any 3rd party trademarks, logos or slogans. Tweets may not contain any derogatory references to Producer, FOX, Teen Choice sponsors or Teen Choice nominees and/or participants. “
Meaning if you disparage or defame the TCA’s, your votes will be disqualified. You are going to hurt the nominees you voted for and it will negatively impact fandoms.
Be positive and be respectful. Do not troll the TCA account and don’t attack the winners who are selected. Don’t start fandom wars over the TCAs by spreading rumors. Be mature! The TCA’s is the only opportunity that a lot of celebs or musicians get to be recognized at, especially for this demographic. Your votes were counted and they do actually matter in this process. Be nice to the fandoms and people who end up winning please. Be civilized and stop spreading ugly posts on the tags.

We’re returning to the 2018 Emmy cycle this week. Two weeks ago, we looked at some of our favorite categories – Main Title Theme and Main Title Design. The next day the loving couple started their morning with freshly prepared breakfast from Malibu Farm before retreating to the adults only infinity pool.
Tumblr media
The duo spent the day lounging by the pool with friends and snapping flicks with fan. To keep the energy going, Taraji bought the whole pool a round of cocktails on her!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the early afternoon they headed to Esencia Spa where they took advantage of the outdoor hydrotherapy garden, experiential shower, cabana jacuzzi and hydrotherapy pool before they went in for their couple’s massage and facials. Kelvin was also spotted working out of the state-of-the-art gym while Taraji was snapping pictures to commemorate her first time at Nobu Hotel Los Cabos.
Tumblr media
Dinner that night at Nobu Restaurant pulled out all the stops with an entire dining experience curated around Valentine’s Day. From a giant display of sushi in the shape of a heart to “eternal flame” cocktails, this was a meal they will never forget. The couple made a toast to an unforgettable weekend and gushed about how much fun they had celebrating their last Valentines together before getting married.
Taraji's PR company seemingly confirmed an "Empire" spin-off starring Taraji is currently in the works. They said she took a break from Chicago where she is shooting the "Empire" spin-off. Last month, a spin-off series centered around Taraji's character, Cookie Lyon, was still kind of in the air.
“We have talked about it but there has been no pitch, and there has been no deals,” FOX entertainment chief Michael Thorn said during TCA. “Would we like to keep Taraji on our air for as long as possible? Of course!”
“We have talked and continue to talk with the producers about spinoffs all the time, but when you have a show that’s iconic, if we are going to do it, it’s got to be great and hopefully worthy of being in the same sentence as the original,” he said, noting that there are ongoing conversations but “nothing formal.”
So, get ready for that Cookie Lyon "Empire" spin-off.
As for the wedding...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Oscar nominated actress revealed in an interview with EXTRA last month that she and Kelvin pushed their wedding date back. They originally planned to tie the knot on April 4th, but they've pushed it back.
“I mentioned one date. It was 4/4/20 and we were really going to do it 4/4/20, but my wedding planner was like, ‘Okay, in case it rains, we’ll have umbrellas’…and I was like, ‘You know what, never mind about April, let’s move it later,’ ” she explained.
She didn't dish on the new date, but she said she’s “excited” for the nuptials.
“I am excited. I usually don’t get excited until it’s closer to me. It still seems so far off,” she said.

CHA₂DS₂-VASc Score
The updated CHADS2 results and version, CHA2DS2-VASc-Score, are the rules for clinical prognosis for assessing stroke risk in patients with non-rheumatic atrial fibrillation (AF), severe and severe cardiac arrhythmias associated with thromboembolic stroke. Such results are used to determine whether anticoagulation or platelet aggregation is necessary because AF can cause blood stagnation in the upper chambers of the heart and lead to the formation of murine thrombus that can be removed. Brain, disrupt brain supply and trigger a stroke.
A high score corresponds to a higher risk of stroke, whereas a lower score corresponds to a lower risk of stroke. The CHADS2 assessment is simple and has been confirmed by many studies.  In clinical use, the classification of CHADS2 (pronounced "two chads") is replaced by the evaluation of VASc CHA2DS2 ("chads vasc"), with which patients at low risk receive better stratification.

Calorie Calculator
Calories are energy units. In nutrition, calories refer to the energy that people get from the food and drinks they consume and the energy they consume during physical activity.
Calories are listed in the nutritional information of all food packages. Many weight loss programs focus on reducing calorie intake.
This article in the MNT Knowledge Center looks at calories related to food and drinks and how the human body uses energy. MNT treats what calories are, how many calories people need every day, and how calories can be consumed in a way that is beneficial to overall health.
 Quick facts about calories
Calories are important for human health. The key consumes the right amount.
Every day requires a different amount of energy, depending on age, gender, size and level of activity.
People in the United States consume more than 11 percent of their daily fast food calories.
Foods high in energy but low in nutritional value provide empty calories.

CURB-65 Score
CURB-65, also known as CURB criteria, is a validated clinical prediction rule for prediction of community-acquired pneumonia and infection everywhere. CURB-65 is based on a previous assessment by CURB and was recommended by the British Thoracic Society to assess the severity of pneumonia. Founded in 2002 at the University of Nottingham by Dr. W. S. Lim et al. A new CURB-65 based toolkit was introduced in 2018.
The result is an abbreviation for each of the measured risk factors. Each risk factor has points for a maximum score of 5:
Reboot Confusion (defined as AMTS 8 or less)
Blood nitrogen greater than 7 mmol / l (19 mg / dl)
Breath speed 30 breaths per minute or more
Blood pressure below 90 mmHg systolic or diastolic blood pressure 60 mmHg or less

Cardiovascular Risk Calculator
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels. CVD includes coronary artery disease (CHD) such as angina and myocardial infarction (commonly known as heart attack). Other cardiovascular diseases are stroke, heart failure, hypertensive heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, cardiac arrhythmia, congenital heart disease, heart disease, cardiopulmonary disease, heart disease, aortic aneurysm, arterial disease and venous fever thrombosis.
The underlying mechanism varies depending on the disease. Atherosclerosis is a disease of the coronary arteries, strokes and peripheral arteries. This can be caused by high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes mellitus, lack of exercise, obesity, high cholesterol, malnutrition, and excessive alcohol consumption. It is estimated that high blood pressure accounts for around 13% of CVD deaths, while tobacco accounts for 9%, diabetes 6%, sedentary lifestyle 6% and obesity 5%. Rheumatic heart disease can follow sore throat that is left untreated.
It is believed that up to 90% CVD can be avoided. Prevention of CVD involves increasing risk factors by: eating healthy, exercising, avoiding tobacco smoke and limiting alcohol consumption. Treatment of risk factors such as high blood pressure, blood lipids and diabetes is also beneficial. Treating a sore throat with antibiotics can reduce the risk of rheumatic heart disease. The use of aspirin in healthy people is otherwise unclear.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. This applies to all regions of the world except Africa. Together, CVD resulted in 17.9 million deaths (32.1%) in 2015, compared with 12.3 million (25.8%) in 1990. CVD deaths were one more age general and increasing in most developing countries, while this figure has declined in most industrialized countries since the 1970s. Coronary artery disease and stroke cause 80% of CVD deaths in men and 75% of CVD deaths in women. Most cardiovascular disease affects older adults. In the United States, 11% of 20 to 40 years have CVD, while 37% of 40 to 60 years, 71% of 60 to 80 years, and 85% of more than 80 years have CVD. The average age of death from heart disease in developed countries is around 80 years, while in developing countries it is around 68 years. [10] Men are usually diagnosed with this disease seven to ten years earlier than women.

Child Pugh Score
Child-Pugh results are a system for evaluating prognosis - including the strength of treatment and the need for liver transplantation - chronic liver disease, especially cirrhosis. It provides an estimate of the increase in the severity of your liver disease and the expected survival rate.
Also referred to as the Child-Pugh classification, the Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) calculator, and as a criterion for children.
 How are Pugh-Child scores calculated?
Pugh Child rank is determined by evaluating five clinical measures for liver disease. A score of 1, 2 or 3 is given for each measurement, with 3 being the most serious.
 The five clinical steps are:
total bilirubin: yellow compounds in bile produced from the breakdown of hemoglobin
Serum albumin: Blood protein made in the liver
Prothrombin time, extension, or INR: blood clotting time
Ascites: fluid in the abdominal cavity
Liver encephalopathy: brain disease liver disease
As an example:
If the result of ascites is "No", this measure is valued by 1 point.
If the result of ascites is a "mild / diuretic reaction", this measure is assessed by 2 points.
If the result of ascites is "moderate / diuretic", this measure is assessed by 3 points.
After the results for each of the five clinical metrics are available, all results are added together and the results are Child-Pugh scores.

Calcium Correction Calculator
PURPOSE:
(1) Determine whether total calcium (tCa) correlates with ionized calcium (iCa) in hypoalbuminemic dogs; (2) to assess whether albumin (Alb) corrected for calcium or total protein (TP) or both accurately predicts iCa levels and can therefore be used to monitor calcium homeostasis in critically ill hypoalbuminemic dogs; and (3) to evaluate factors related to possible mismatches in calcium classification between total corrected and ionized values.
 DESIGN:
Prospective clinical trial.
 Settings:
Intensive care unit for small animals in veterinary clinics.
 ANIMAL:
28 canine patients with hypalbuminemia.
 ACTION:
Not one.
 MAIN ACTION AND RESULTS:
iCa is determined using a special ion electrode method on heparinized plasma. The concentration of tCa is adjusted to Alb and TP using published equations. As many as 29% (8/28) of hypoalbuminemia, critically ill dogs in this study were hypocalcaemic in the intensive care unit, as determined by iCa measurements. Adjusted calcium values did not accurately classify calcium in 67.9% or 64.3% of cases, depending on whether Alb was corrected or the TP correction value was used. The sensitivity and specificity of tCa to assess hypocalcemia are 100% and 47%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the correction formula are 37.5% and 79% for the corrected value for Alb and 37.5% and 74% for the corrected value for TP. tCa overestimates the presence of hypocalcemia and underestimates the presence of normocalcemia, whereas calcium levels are too high against the presence of normocalcemia and underestimates the presence of hypocalcemia.
 conclusion:
Calcium homeostasis in hypoalbuminemic critical dogs should be assessed using iCa concentrations, not tCa or corrected calcium for Alb or TP. Because tCa is 100% sensitive to the detection of hypocalcemia in this population, it is recommended that all hypoalbuminemia and critically ill patients with low tCa be assessed by measuring iCa.

 Centor Score Calculator
Based on what criteria is Centor?
1981 published Dr. Robert Center et al wrote an article in Medical Decision Making. The aim was to find out whether clinical results could support the possibility of adult patients with group A streptococcal laryngitis. They analyzed 234 patients who filled out their questionnaire and performed a neck culture. They found that a series of four variables can predict positive culture. Nearly two decades later, Dr. Warren Makisaak added the scale by adding a fifth variable, age.
How do you calculate the Centor Score?
The Centor Criteria (Modified / McIsaac) is a type of criteria for strep throat and consists of four variables: temperature> 38 ° C, tonsils, soft anterior cervical lymphadenopathy, and no cough. Each of them can give you +1 point. The fifth variable - age - can give you a value of -1, 0 or +1.
 Cod body temperature> 38 C 1
There is no temperature or fever 0
Almond Excretion 1
No exudate 0
Lymphadenopathy lymph nodes 1
Lymphadenopathy 0
Apache 0
Without coughing 1
Age <15 1
16-44 0
> 45 -1
What does the results from Centor tell you?
The higher the Centor Score, the more likely a streptococcal infection that causes pharyngitis.
Probability of a central outcome for positive culture
4 or 5 51-53%
3 28-35%
2 14-16%
1 5-7%
0 1-3%
Centor's results must therefore be interpreted as follows:
0-1 point: No additional tests or antibiotics are needed.
2-3 points: Culture tests must be carried out, antibiotics are only needed if the culture results are positive.
4-5 points: Treat empirically with antibiotics.
Let's take an example!
A 24-year-old student comes to the doctor for a sore throat that occurs the day before the visit. Patients also report productive coughing, sneezing, and colds. His body temperature is 37.8 degrees Celsius. He denies neck pain. On medical examination, tonsils that are enlarged and swollen with exudate appear. However, there is no lymphadenopathy.
To evaluate appropriate patient care for the possible etiology of bacterial pharyngitis, a doctor must calculate a Centor Score. Patients receive: body temperature - 0 points, tonsils - 1 point, lymph nodes - 0 points, cough - 0 points and age - 0 points. Overall - 1 point. In this case, no antibiotic or throat culture is needed because the risk of streptococcal infection is 5 to 7%.

Creatinine Clearance Calculator
Creatinine is a by-product of damage to normal muscle tissue. During creatinine production, it is filtered through the kidneys and excreted in the urine. Doctors measure blood creatinine as a test for kidney function. The ability of the kidneys to handle creatinine is called creatinine level. This helps determine the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and blood flow through the kidneys.
Normal kidney function and GFR
All blood in the body flows through the kidneys hundreds of times a day. The kidneys push fluid out of the blood through a small filter (nephron) and then absorb most of the fluid back into the blood. Liquids and waste products that are not absorbed by the kidneys are excreted in the urine.
The rate of blood flow through the kidneys is the glomerular filtration rate, or GFR. (Glomeruli are microscopic collections of blood vessels in the nephron and important components of the filtration system.) Glomerular filtration rates cannot be measured directly - hence creatinine measurement and creatinine clearance.

Daybreak Creator Brian Ralph on the Comic's Jump to Netflix
https://ift.tt/2OVzAR9
After creating perhaps the first ever first-person post apocalyptic zombie comic in Daybreak, Brian Ralph discusses the Netflix adaptation.

tumblr
The first thing that happens in Brian Ralph's 2011 graphic novel Daybreak is a character greeting you. Yes, in the very first panel a man in ragged clothing and missing an arm says "Hello" to you, the reader. In a novel approach to perspective, the reader is the main character of Daybreak as the story has you head off on a post-apocalyptic adventure filled with common dangers and a mass of zombie-like creatures called "ghoulies."
"It was always the intention for the story to be written in the first-person point of view," Ralph, the Savannah based cartoonist and professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) says. Daybreak was Ralph's third graphic novel after Cave In and Climbing Out and is now set to become the first to be adapted.

Netflix stepped up to the plate to adapt the unique and challenge in Daybreak into a TV series. In doing so, the streamer has introduced a high school element into Ralph's post-apocalyptic world, complete with a first person narration to pay capture the sensibility of the original. We spoke with Ralph about writing Daybreak, his thoughts on Netflix's adaptation strategy, and the challenges of teaching the sequential arts.
Tumblr media
Annoyingly broad question to begin, I know, but where did the inspiration for Daybreak come from? I’m just curious about its origins as you recall them.
Turning Daybreak into something more than a comic book has been a long time coming – the book itself was published in 2012. The comic book developed out of the need for a creative outlet that was on par with playing video games. At the time, I was a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design within its sequential arts department (where I still work now) and wasn’t gaming all that often.
While I was trying to find things to fill the gap, I realized I was missing the adventure aspect – the way finding though uncharted territory, the problem solving, the world building… everything. So I decided to write a book that could complete with a video game! It was a slow process, but as I teach my students, you need to fully develop the story. We teach our students to concept, create and revise so that they can adequately weave the narrative with their visual art to tell amazing stories.
How did you develop your interesting take on zombies or zombie-like creatures even? Were you a fan of the zombie and/or apocalyptic genres? Any inspirations?
When it comes to zombies, I’ve always been a fan and have explored the genre from just about every angle. In college, my friends and I watched a lot of zombie movies. What I liked was the ability to see the solutions devised by the characters on how to survive. I liked that they were slow – it gave characters time to problem solve and really come up with a clever solution. I was also in a zombie band, The Scared Stiffs, for a while. We dressed like zombies and sang songs from the point of view of zombies. It was pretty sweet.
I’ve also read several apocalyptic novels, but I’d say that my inspiration was drawn from books like The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Zone 1 by Colson Whitehead, and Into the Forest by Jean Hegland.
The first-person nature of the comic is a unique storytelling technique. Was it always the intention to tell the story from that perspective or did it develop along with the story? To your knowledge, is that something Netflix attempted to do with the show in its early stages?
It was always the intention for the story to be written in the first-person point of view. In the comic, the characters are talking to the reader so having that come through in the adaption was great. Brad Payton (the director) thought it would be a good idea for the main character, Josh, to break fourth wall and that’s where Ferris Bueller nod comes in. It’s a throwback to an '80s classic and Matthew Broderick as one of the stars just makes it that much better.
Speaking of Netflix, how did that deal come about and what was your level of involvement with the series? What did you make of the high school aspect they’ve gone with?
As I mentioned before, turning Daybreak into a movie or TV show has been a long time coming – I’ve worked with director Brad Payton for many years as he’s optioned the project out. But to back up, Brad found the comic while he was browsing in a comic book shop in L.A. and called me that night to talk about it. It took me a moment to realize he was who he said he was, but after that, it was full steam ahead. Over the course of a couple of hours, we talked about Brad’s vision for Daybreak, what he liked about it and also what it would need to be adapted for film or TV. I really liked what he had to say, and felt his additions only enhanced the story I had created.
read more: Bone Animated Series Coming to Netflix
It wasn’t until early 2018 that I found out Netflix was turning it into a TV show – from there it moved quickly and was amazing to see the world I had created come to life. Originally, I thought I wanted to have a lot of input and control over the adaption of my book. However, after hearing what Brad and the team had to say, I became much more open to the collaboration. As a professor at SCAD I teach my students that cross-disciplinary collaboration is at the core of every great project. By collaborating, you have the opportunity to learn from the best minds in a variety of industries, ultimately making your project better. All of the men and women working on the project are insanely talented – the best thing I could do for the book was let them do what they do best. The end result was a group that had given their all to the project and you could really see it shine through in their work.
In terms of the high school aspect, it seemed fitting! I think it was Brad that made the comment, but everyone can relate to the feeling of being in high school, the feeling of being “so over” this world and wishing you lived in another one. The apocalypse is that “other world” and really allows for the playing field to be leveled so to speak, and for everyone to reinvent themselves.
Do you feel that your works Cave In, Climbing Out, Daybreak work as a sort of spiritual trilogy? The titles alone in sequential order seem like they tell a little story. How did your storytelling and art evolve through each?
Yes – I do think that they are a part of a larger world. What that world is I’m still trying to figure out- so stay tuned! I think the art and storytelling have evolved over time, simply by the things that I’ve learned and seen throughout my time working in comics and teaching at SCAD.
How has teaching a sequential arts program changed or refined how you think about sequential arts/comics/graphic novels? It seems like the teaching of this art in an academic environment is still a relatively young endeavor. How do you go about developing coursework?
It's interesting, because what I teach is directly related, but also juxtaposed, with what I would consider “real life” work. I teach traditional sequential storytelling and the core elements like drawing, cartooning, and the known ways of storytelling. Like any creative endeavor, you have to have the foundational elements in place to make the piece an effective piece of art. For sequential arts you need to have elements like the character development, the problem being solved, or story arch, and know how to drive the story forward to keep the audience turning the page.  However, in my opinion, the best novels are the ones that break the rules and keep you guessing, so that’s what I try and do in my own work.
I teach my students the foundations and the parameters but want them to think of my classes as the “authority on how to break the rules” in order to create great stories. And while I give assignments that are asking students to make creative decisions, every assignment has a bit of a “wink” to it that allows for creativity.
