Indie Bookstore Adventures: San Marcos Edition
Tumblr media
My partner lives in San Marcos, Texas, which is about an hour drive from where I currently reside in north Austin, and we alternate visits with each other on weekends. While I'm more of the reader between the two of us, we both share a love for all things goth, horror and spooky. So when I discovered that there's a new independent bookshop called Triple Six Social less than a ten minutes drive from his place specializing in All Of The Above...well, you can imagine my reaction. 😂
Tumblr media
First of all, Triple Six Social is not just a bookstore: it's also a witch shop, oddities curio, and coffee bar. Because they just recently opened (as of this post), they don't have a huge selection of books just yet, but they had some very interesting titles on the paranormal and spooky history, as well as a good collection of works from well-known horror writers. They also had a really nice selection of children's books as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also carry a variety of goods and witchy supplies from local and regional artists and creators, including some horror-themed soaps and some of the best smelling wax melts we've ever come across in our lives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(By the way, I know the artist who makes those prints – in fact, I found out about Triple Six Social because they shared it on their Instagram story! You can give them a follow and see more of their beautiful work on IG at @bekkabakerart!)
They also have a small curio room with some cool oddities (including this beautiful taxidermy mountain lion), as well as a small theatre room for horror movie nights, tarot readings, and special events. They even have a small haunted museum at the back of the building! There is a $10 fee for the museum so we decided to skip it for our first visit, but they do offer free museum days once a month so we definitely plan on returning!
Tumblr media
Right now, their coffee bar is donation-based. They had some standard espresso options and a few specialty drinks on the menu (my partner got a Victorian London fog and I got some cherry blossom green tea) and told us that they plan to expand the menu soon to include snacks as well as beer and wine.
All in all it was a fabulous first visit. The staff was so friendly and while their stock is small at the moment, I'm really excited to see how this rad little shop grows. I have a feeling it will definitely become one of our go-to spots in SMTX!
Tumblr media
(Ain't we cute? 😂)

Hello! Do you have any recommendations for rpgs about wizards, particularly solo rpgs?
THEME: Solo Wizards
Hello, I think I've found some interesting games that deal with magic in some shape or form, from witches, to necromancers, to evil wizards!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyday Enchanter, by Beth and Angel Make Games.
We all face all sorts of struggles in our lives, but what if we could lean on a little bit of hidden magic to help us through it?
Everyday Enchanter is here to help! Enchant your glasses with VIBRANCY to allow you to feel wide awake when you put them on, give your favorite shirt RESILIENCE to make physical and mental pain feel more manageable, and when things really get bad, snuggle up to your favorite GROUNDED-enchanted stuffed animal to regain a feeling of safety and control.
To make the enchantments stronger, simply focus on them in times of need! Reminding yourself that you've got help, even if it's just your favorite pen in your pocket, can help make the tough times a bit more bearable or give you that extra boost of confidence to try something new! And if you really want to strengthen the enchantments, journal about your experiences. When you write about how you really wanted to buy that candy bar at the grocery store checkout but clutched your STAND FIRM-enchanted keychain and resisted temptation, you'll embed that power deeper into your mind. One day you won't even need the enchantments anymore...but until then, they're here for you!
If you bought the TTRPGs for Trans Rights in Florida (or the similarly-titled bundle for Texas), then you already own this game!
The Magus, by momatoes.
The Magus is a solo journaling tabletop RPG that takes you on a sweeping journey for power, ambition, and arcane mastery, at great personal and interpersonal cost.
As a journaling game, you will roll dice, track stats, create spells, and write  imaginary experiences from the perspective of your character: a wizard, newly embarking on their quest for power, their head filled with grand visions of mastery.
This RPG is crunchy. You will use several polyhedral dice to manage four traits: Focus, Power, Control, and Scars, which shape how the protagonist overcomes  challenges and meets their denouement after seven, fateful events.
This game is also beautiful. It has a number of stunning images used as backdrop against the text of the game, illuminating each part of your character sheet before diving into the meat of the game. The game itself pits your character between two choices: increasing the bonds between them and their loved ones, or sacrificing those opportunities to gain in power. You’ll roll a number of dice equal to your power in order to learn more spells, which are created using a combination of prompts and your own imagination.
Miscast, by Paradox Press Games.
You are undergoing training to become the successor of a Master Conjurer, but the only problem is that the Master Conjurer has a major Dragon's Dust addiction and spends most of their days higher than the mountains of Mar' Hollok. This leaves you solely responsible for your own training while also having to conjure up the creatures that eager customers come to your Master’s shop seeking. Long story short, you miscast spells a lot and end up conjuring a wide assortment of weird and fantastical monsters.
This game can be played solo, or it can be played in a group. You are using a deck of cards and a d6 to conjure different kinds of creatures; unfortunately, you’re only an apprentice, so the creatures don’t always come out right. You’ll use the cards from the different suits to determine the physical aspects of the monster, while you’ll use the d6 to determine how big the monster is, the monster’s nature, and what further Abnormalities it might be suffering. A game for funny random creatures, great for getting your creative juices going!
Sigils in the Dark, by Kurt Potts.
You have a need, a deep burning needthat drives you. Is it love, regret, desire?
The darkness whispers, “I can help you…”Minutes turn to hours as you try to focuson the voice. Symbols, shapes, swirl in thedarkness at the edge of your perception. If only you could grasp them, your needs would be met and more.
Sigils in the Dark is a journaling game and GM supplement. The goal of the game is to create an evil mage’s spellbook. You’ll take up the role of this wizard with a desperate need, in search of arcane power to get what they want. They will try to understand dark sigils just outside their perception by randomly generating spells and adding liner notes to their grimoire. In the end, you’ll have an in-game artifact that you can pass on to players and hopefully know a little more about what your evil mage has sacrificed to get where they are.
Using random roll tables, you’ll slowly create an artifact and a number of spells invented by a dark wizard. Each spell will also have a cost, and the wizard may choose to write notes that betray their own personality as they edit the spell the way an expert baker edits a recipe book.
This is great for slow character creation, as you try to figure out the motives and goals of a wizard character, and can also put together pieces of their life before they meet anyone else.
The Final Undertaking, by kay w.
Tonight you will prepare the body. You will hang the heavy black curtain, and you will put out the call in the town paper.  Tomorrow night, when the sun sets, the chosen mourner will arrive, with their matter to discuss. You will sit with the body on one side, coaxing the soul back to the body, and the mourner will sit on the other.  The final undertaking will begin.
THE FINAL UNDERTAKING is a one player journaling game about grief, resolution, necromancy, and a town. It uses a d4, a tarot deck, and pen and paper to tell a story about an undertaker, who works in a town to prepare bodies for burial, briefly brings the spirit back to the body, and then facilitates a conversation between a single mourner and the deceased about their unresolved business.
In this game, you will use the tarot cards to form a spread that tells the bones of a story -- the deceased, the object they are being buried with, the mourner here to visit them, and the unresolved business between them. From your spread, you will be able to construct small narratives and write them down as journal entries.
This is a lovingly written and designed game about putting the dead to rest. You will write journal entries from the point of view of an Undertaker, someone who is responsible for facilitating one last conversation between the spirit of the deceased and their mourner. You will play through 3 phases, which involve determining how well you knew the deceased, the situation at death, and what needs to be resolved before they can pass on to their final rest. The book comes with an oracle of Solemnities, which give you prompts to help you interpret each spread. You can play through the three phases as many times as you like, journaling for each one.
Grimoire, by Anna Landin.
Sparks of magic dance on your palms, flow like rivers through the world around you, and you can weave them into something powerful. You are a witch - and just as a tailor draws their patterns out, and cooks will write their well-kept secret recipes down, so you, too, will bind your spells in ink and paper and make for yourself a grimoire - a spellbook in which to keep your knowledge.
Grimoire is a roleplaying game for one person, played with a deck of regular playing cards with the jokers taken out, a six-sided die, and something to write your spells down with. The latter can be a blank notebook or a sketchbook, or one of the templates provided with these rules. Over the course of the game, you will make a spellbook of your own, a collection of spells you craft out of magic power and components available to you.
If you desire a character that’s a bit less evil wizard and a bit more homebrew witch, Grimoire is another great way to put together a spell book using randomly generated prompts and whatever components your witch has available.

#26 You taste like whiskey when you kiss me with Terry Bruno? Thanks :)
Tumblr media
References to Montana
Terry doesn’t plan to kiss you. It’s just something that happens when the two of you step into the cool air outside the whiskey distillery. He didn’t know that you were coming to Gabe’s thing tonight but he’s glad you did. When you’d walked in, wearing that pretty boho dress and brown leather cowboy boots he was a goner.
You’d ended up sharing a table during the whiskey tasting. He hadn’t spent much time with you outside of The Ranch, he’d wanted to, but you’ve always been guarded. He understands why, what you’d been through with your niece back in Dallas…
It’s hard to trust after something like that.
He gets to know you that night. He finds out you’re a dressmaker, that you used to own a small shop back in Texas. You’ve started selling online recently, business is picking up but you’re still looking at shop space here in town. The dress you’re wearing tonight, it’s one of your creations.
“It’s beautiful.” He tells you as his fingertips brush over the fabric.
You’re the last two people to leave that evening, the time just slips away and before he knows it, he’s helping you into the black leather jacket you arrived in.
He finds himself smiling when he steps outside, he’s been doing that a lot tonight. There’s just something about you that makes him feel a lightness in his chest. He hasn’t felt this happy in a long time. When you tip your head up to meet his gaze, he sees something in your eyes, and he knows that you feel the exact same way that he does.
That’s why he kisses you that night, underneath a night sky filled with a thousand stars. He knows in that moment that this is the start of something wonderful.
It’s just a shame that in a year’s time you’re on the run for murder.
And Terry, he’s your accomplice.

The Night Chronicles
What is it —
A 2D animated horror anthology series that is not only connected by an Observer character who appears at the beginning and end of every episode but is also in the same veins as HBO's Tales From The Crypt and the Hub's R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour: The Series where whether or not you actually think or find it scary, you still appreciate and give credit to it being actual horror cause it does indeed try to be full-on horror.
Tumblr media
PREMISE:
Bringing high quality 2D animation to the genre of horror, The Night Chronicles tells a rather wide variety of dark, intense, twisted, macabre morality tales or just tales in general of absolute horror with a wide focus on kids, teenagers or adults depending on the episode or storyline. Unlike most horror anthologies though, every episode of each season will be a solid 2 hour long because they're treated more as mini-movies with their theatrics and scales.
EPISODE IDEAS:
Sophie, The Girl Who Cheats Death — The life of a shy, quiet, socially awkward and timid gorgeous blonde teen girl, Sophie Wilcox, is turned upside down when after getting caught trying to steal a prized fantasy uniform from her favorite series in an attempt to impress her peers, the shop owner who's revealed to be a mad witch places a curse on her as a sick punishment.... she's given Sophie the nine lives of a cat through a gland in its brain that causes it but to the expense of a kitten's life. However, things take even more of an unexpected turn of events when they both realize they could use this to their advantage and now Sophie is the star attraction of a carnival sideshow and has become a sensation. In doing so, it unfortunately leads Sophie down a neverending dark path as the fame changes her into leaving her friends behind, leaving her family behind and willing to do anything to stay on top. All of this culminates on the night of her final performance, having heartlessly disowned her former friend and her mother, when Sophie realizes all too late as she's buried alive deep underground.... that she may have miscounted how many lives she has.
Texas Body Count — Set in El Paso, Texas, a mysterious vigilante of imposing height arrives in the middle of the night and begins cleaning up the crime ridden streets in his own vicious and brutal ways as a gang war is threatening to break out. But throughout all of this, we see him get mortally wounded and even fucked up horribly and fatally yet there's not one single scratch or wound on him and if there is any, they instantaneously heal right up. He falls from high buildings in pursuit and just gets right back with no bloody mess and broken bones. It's then that this man's past is revealed to us, he was once a dangerous criminal wanted by the FBI that was killed in a robbery gone wrong but instead of letting him stay dead, the U.S. Government confiscated his body and used it for an undead and indestructible super soldier program, resurrecting him as one of them. However, what they didn't count on was that he would be the only one who as it turned slowly regained his memories and eventually escaped all on his own from the facility. Now in order to redeem himself in his own eyes from all of the bad he's done in his life, he's taken to cleaning up the streets riddled with crime and take revenge on the people who turned him into a monster.
Flesh & Bone — A twelve year old bullied boy, Jacob Avery, is regularly picked on by his classmates and older siblings and due to being blamed for the constant trouble the latters cause, he's one slip-up away from being sent to military school by his strict, military-wannabe father. The only person who seems to genuinely care about his well-being and is the only one he considers to be a true friend or the closest to any is his teacher, Ms. Parkerton, whose become aware of the severe bullying he's facing. It's then that Jacob starts hearing strange but otherworldly voices and howls coming from the woods that are calling to him and it turns out he's not the only one — Parkerton's begun hearing them too. Investigating all on her own, she ultimately discovers the terrifying source of it as it's of an old rotting flesh-craving wendigo that needs to rejuvenate and uses its call to lure its victims. However, Jacob soon realizes all of this is to his advantage when he discovers the horrible truth that his bullies had driven another student (a girl) to attempt suicide, his bullying older brother had raped and beat his cheerleader girlfriend and his father has been emotionally, verbally and physically abusing his mother and other siblings.... and the creature in the deep, dark woods will eat anything you put in front of it.

Notes/Trivias/Details:
• The most important one of all is aforementioned previously, an Observer character who serves as the "host" of the series will appear in every episode's beginnings and ends. He's called "The Hidden", an assumed young man who wears a blank, white burlap sack as a mask that's almost wrapped around his face instead of an ordinary mask with no eyeholes and he collects objects from strange and disturbing tales that he puts in his homeless guy-type of backpack so that no one ever forgets them. No one knows who he is or where he came from or why he does what he does or where he'll go next but all that's known is if you see him or worse, hear his whistle than you know something dark and scary is gonna happen. However with that said, he obviously doesn't mean no harm and is just a curious observer.
• Most episodes or rather almost every episode of the series have bad endings but there will definitely be a few genuinely good or bittersweet endings sprinkled throughout to balance it out to where the bad endings are more effective and the good endings feel more special and earned. With the bad endings, there's always a genuine moment of victory where the character or characters let's say break the age-old curse or defeats the demonic harlequin or escape the clutches of the Sandman whose held them captive in their sleep etc.... but then in classic horror anthology style, there's an extra thing or a twist that immediately happens that goes "Nope!". So there's an "Ah, relief!" for the viewer and character/characters then suddenly bam, nope, nuh-uh. But the good endings are the ones that do feel the most well earned where they go through hell and back but they actually grow and develop into better people who realize the errors of their ways.
• As you can see if you at least know, the three episodes in one way or another are influenced by some other media. "Sophie, The Girl Who Cheats Death" is influenced by the classic Tales From The Crypt episode "Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone" but does its own magical and tragic take on it to where it makes it its own to where you can view them both separately. "Texas Body Count" is directly based off a cancelled Tales From The Crypt movie called Redneck Frank aka Body Count written by Adam Rifkin and one of my favorite filmmakers Walter Hill and I felt like it was a strong enough story to tell in the medium of animation.... HORROR animation. As for "Flesh & Bone", it's a subversive take on a lot of the aspects of R.L. Stine stories, Stephen King stories and children's horror anthologies where the bad people are legit awful people such as useless idiot adults, psychopathic bullies and abusive parents and most of the time, they don't get called out on it or get what they deserve. Here, it's the exact opposite where they're all called out on what heinous people they are and get their horrifiyingly sick and gruesome comeuppances for being shitstains.
• Now for the animation style, that's easy. It'll be heavily inspired and modeled after the artwork of comic book artist Tony Moore especially with his Walking Dead issues and since it's animation, it will be more fluid and more expressive without going overboard.
• Last but not least, the show will have three seasons with about 8 or 10 episodes each and without ever pointing it out, it's shown that every episode of The Night Chronicles are set in the same universe as each other obviously with not just the Hidden appearing and connecting at the beginnings and ends but also there's call-backs, casual references and easter eggs such as let's say a fictional Big Kahuna Burger fast food restaurant is mentioned in one episode than the bag with the logo on it appears in another.
But there's a surprise reveal in the series finale:
After the Hidden walks away into a crowd as usual, the scene transitions into a warm home on Christmas Eve and we're introduced to a gorgeous blonde but quiet young woman whose name is revealed later on to be Andrea and is comforted by her mother and two younger sisters, Amy (23) and Sophia (8). Earlier this year, Andrea's fiancee Charlie was killed in combat serving overseas and a recovering from depression Andrea has recently been doing nothing but stare at a snowglobe that Charlie gave to her as a going-away present day in and day out. After a loving conversation with her youngest sister Sophia, a still silent Andrea decides to go over and celebrate Christmas with her family.
All the while two things are shown to us....
1). It's revealed that Andrea, Amy and Sophia are the Andrea, Amy and Sophia of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comic series done in Tony Moore's style with Andrea having her hair all the way down as seen in the final second image below in the background.
& 2). Once Andrea and Sophia walk away from the toasty kitchen table, the camera slowly moves in on the snowglobe and as a direct throwback to the final moment of a little show.... called St. Elsewhere, the setting of the series finale to The Night Chronicles is in the goddamn snowglobe.... thus revealing that not only are every episode in the same universe but that the whole entire series is all in the mind of Andrea. It's been a figment this whole time.
Go figure.

Lanternfam’s favorite scary/Halloween movies:
with help by the lovely @space-specs
Hal- Rocky Horror Picture Show (he has a Dr Frank-N-Furter costume somewhere in his closet that he plans to wear for some League Halloween party)(specs and i are hardcore projecting genderfluid Hal hcs onto this)(he also knows how to dance the Time Warp)
Guy- Halloween (he is mad about the reboot and how the lighting has made the movie kinda worse. like he has no problem with the fact that they're making the new movie, and he isn't into how movies are really directed in any way, but even he is mad about the lighting)
John- Beetlejuice (it's a classic and Michael Keaton and the rest of the all-star cast do so well in it. he is also a fan of the musical)
Kyle- Coraline (the art style is so good and he definitely was terrified of it until he watched it and then he was fine with it. he definitely uses it to scare the senior lanterns tho)(dude it fucked me up. he'd be all over that -ketchup)
Jess- Casper (she liked it as a kid because it was about a connection that she wanted when she was younger that she didn't really have. plus it's a really sweet movie)(note: neither of us have seen it)
Simon- Paranorman (it's a good movie about seeing the truth of people, more than just what you see on the outside or in your expectations about them. and the art style is really unique and good and yeah. vibes, man)
Jo- Train to Busan (it's got a lot of complex messages in it and yeah. zombie apocalypse movies scary)
Keli- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (it fits. no i will not elaborate. -ketchup)
Alan- Young Frankenstein ("it has Gene Wilder in it, and gay people like Gene Wilder, right? i mean, i'm gay, and i like Gene Wilder. Gene Wilder is for the gays and i said so" -specs)(let the record state that ketchup also loves this movie and also really freaking loves Alan Scott and approves wholeheartedly)
Carol- Hocus Pocus (she dressed up as one of the Sanderson Sisters for Halloween last year)("she is a Sanderson sisters fan, and i mean in the bisexual way" -specs)
Kilowog- Little Shop of Horrors (he would get a kick out of the giant man-eating plant and the protagonist just being a little guy(tm))(plus the songs are really catchy and when Hal and Guy showed it to him, both of them were singing and quoting along, so its a movie that holds a special place in his heart)
Razer- Addams Family Values (he appreciates Wednesday's homicidal tendencies a lot. also his family is a little kooky, and the Addams family is a little kooky and crazy and he likes it)("...so basically, what i’m saying, is that Razer is a Wednesday Addams kinnie" -specs)
Thaal- The Blair Witch Project (he fell victim to its trappings and he thinks that it's real. he keeps trying to convince Hal to go ghost hunting with him. Hal keeps refusing and telling him that ghosts probably don't exist but Thaal refuses to listen.)
B'dg- Over The Hedge (the Verminator is scary.)
Helen- Halloweentown ("its the closest Disney gets to weirdgirl-core, and that’s her vibe" -specs)("yes Helen is not a lantern but she IS in the lanternfam and deserves to be. fite me" -ketchup)

No one needs to convince me that it was Jack's initiative to wear cowboy outfits in the 'Treasure of the Blind Swordsman' episode. However, I'm sort of disappointed we didn't get a scene in which Jack tries to persuade Wuya to dress up.
‘What if there are more wus hidden in Texas, Wuya? We definitely should change into Evil cowboy Genius and Heylin cowgirl witch sometime.'
Wuya would only roll her eyes when Jack brings up the issue because the boy as always gets too hyped up.
In my mind, Jack had prepared a list of arguments for such an idea. 'C'mon monks already went full-cowboy that one time and we couldn't do that because you were all GHOSTY back then!'
‘wuya wuya lemmie show you the art of online shopping’ ‘partners in crime should have matching outfits sometimes!
So, he would mix the most ridiculous reasons with the more practical ones. Wuya would start actually listening to him once he mentions they need cowboy disguises in order to better blend in.
Eventually, she agrees because the clothes Jack showed her really were her style and she wanted to wear them!
‘Ok, fine we can buy them. I can’t remember the last time I wore trousers. Nice call, Jack.’ - she would sum up in one sentence.
And oh boy, I bet Jack was so excited to see Wuya’s cooperating in his silly antics. So, certain he is lucky enough today, he starts suggesting more. ‘Oh, I should, like, build a whole ass train, Wuya. And my jackbots would be stylized to be cowboy bandits, I have to order as many cowboy hats as possible’
Wuya got used to Jack doing everything for aesthetics so she would not interfere. Tho, she would keep on reminding him the wu is soon to be revealed, and thus, she sets up a deadline:‘Just hurry with these’ – she reminds him every now and then.
And when the wu activates, they come prepared. Even they have their own horses in that episode!
Tumblr media
What's even better Jack's horse has a red mane!!! Ain't that cool?
I have no idea if these horses were rented/stolen but it has to be admitted it is quite rare to see a horse with a red mane, right? So, I also came up with a wholesome idea.
Let's assume Wuya and Jack entered a stable to choose their animal companions. And Jack, as always, utters some nonsense. (for me it's not stupid but for Wuya IT IS). He tells her, he will pick the most goth-looking horse here. Wuya gets irritated, of course, because it indicates that Jack is about to examine every horse and this way they lose more time on something unnecessary. She already picked her horse, it is Jack, who is stalling!
Sometime later Jack sadly informs Wuya there are no black horses. Wuya is not much of a help. She commands him to make a final decision. Then, Jack spots the one horse, which he had missed. He fell in love immediately once he realized the horse is a redhead, just like him!
'Wuya! Wuya! He's just like me!' -the boy exclaims. Then, Wuya throws a few insults but Jack can't even hear them. He approaches the horse, grabs some ice cubes from his pocket, and hands the offering. The horse licks his hand and once the snack is gone, Jack gives the horse some head pats.
I hc Jack is good at horse riding because it is his mother's favorite sports discipline. (I assumed it bc the Spicers are hella rich so why not make Mrs. Spicer fixated on horse-riding) So, he knows how to recognize an excellent steed.
I only wanted to write down that Jack is such a sweetheart when he takes care of animals. It was proved when he had that little dino-army. Hence, my suggestion he's as good at taking care of horses. Now I want more 'Jack likes horses' content.

Once the epitome of a law abiding and law enforcing citizen, Ian had become a bit of a punk in his old age. Perhaps it had something to do with the witch hunt that had forced him out of his hometown centuries ago, or the fact that justice systems the world over had deviated so much from the one he had served in his youth. There wasn’t a day that went by now that he didn’t lament how cruelly America in particular treated its citizens. How they treated each other. It was outrageous!
Still, as anarchistic as he was leaning these days, the vampire had never lost his desire to protect those around him, and for all of its modern eccentricities, this small and sleepy Texas town reminded him loosely of his old village. People cared about their neighbors. They stuck their noses in everyone else’s business. Most people didn’t lock their doors at night. Everyone thought they were safe, trusting each other in a way that he’d rarely seen anywhere else. The news of a grisly murder just down the road had been devastating, and predictably had local cops sniffing around the shops.
Ian wasn’t surprised when he opened his door and found himself face to face with one. Sighing heavily, he remarked, “Normally, I’d demand to see a warrant before I let you in here, officer, but I want this case solved just as quickly as I’m sure you do.” A perk of immortality: he didn’t look nearly as tired as he felt. The downside of such vitality, however, was that it could make him look apathetic at times. Hopefully his eyes could convey the sympathy that his porcelain face could not. “Be as thorough as you must,” he added, stepping aside. “I have nothing to hide, and I’ll answer your questions to the best of my abilities. Just…try not to break anything?”

Here comes my contribution to your prompt game: a one-shot about Jessy and MC finally meeting up for a night of horror movies. But things get out of hand...
Alright, for this one we're going to have to pretend episode 10 didn't end the way it did. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you meant by out of hand but it certainly does fit the description. I had a lot of fun writing this.
Trigger Warning: I'm not sure what to put here but I know there should be something. If you find the content in horror movies triggering you probably don't want to read this.
Horror Queen: Dethroned
MC and Jessy make their way through the supermarket picking out all their favorite snacks for movie night. They fill their shopping cart with popcorn, chips, cookies, candy, and other junk food. Forty-five minutes and $86.35 later they leave the store and head back to Jessy's house. MC arranges all of the snacks on the table in the living room while Jessy pops several bags of popcorn and pours them all into a big bowl. Jessy brings the popcorn into the living room and grabs some blankets and throws them on the couch.
"So what are our movie choices?" MC asks.
"Well, there are just so many to choose from. Let's start with Hereditary. It's about a family that has witch ancestors and they all get possessed and die crazy deaths. Are you sure you're not going to chicken out?" Jessy teases.
"Me? You're the one who acts like the queen of horror but gets terrified over the slightest things."
"That's not the same! Watching it on TV and knowing it's fake is different than being faced with crazies in real life."  Jessy says as she plops down on the couch.
"If you say so," MC says. She covers up with a blanket and grabs the bowl of popcorn and puts it on the couch between them.
Halfway through the movie, both girls are hiding their faces from the horror in front of them. MC keeps covering her eyes with her hands every few moments while Jessy occasionally pulls the blanket up over her face. Jessy peeks over the top of the blanks just in time to see the mother's headless corpse leap from the attic window. Jessy squeals and covers her face again causing MC to erupt into a fit of laughter. Jessy gives her a pointed glance before grabbing a pillow and throwing it at her. After just over two hours of the most terrifying movie, either of them had ever watched MC grabs the remote and turns off the TV. Both of them just sit there staring at the now dark TV screen.
"Well, that was..." MC trails off.
"Horrifying." Jessy finishes.
"So, it's getting pretty late are you up for another movie?" MC asks.
"Duh! I am the horror queen after all!" Jessy exclaims making MC roll her eyes.
"Alright, I get to pick this time. How about Texas Chainsaw Massacre?"
"Sounds good to me. I heard those movies are based on a true story."
"Umm, yeah, I don't think that is true." MC laughs.
MC turns the TV back on, carefully selects the movie and presses play. The movie starts kind of slow but it isn't too long before Leatherface starts killing innocent people. The movie hadn't been on very long when MC looks over at Jessy and notices a strange expression on her face. She stares at her for a moment when she suddenly looks over and grabs her arm.
"Did you hear that?" Jessy asks in a panic-stricken voice.
"Oh but you're not paranoid at all are you?" MC laughs at her.
"No, I'm serious MC." She pushes the blankets off of herself and stands up. "I'm going to make sure all the doors are locked."
"Whatever you say, horror queen."
After a few minutes, Jessy comes running back into the room. "MC, someone is trying to get in the back door!"
"Ok, that's enough scary movies for you. I think it's time we call it a night." MC says and just as she finishes the words the power suddenly goes out.
"We have to call the police!" Jessy grabs her phone off the table.
"And tell them what Jessy? That we were watching horror movies, the power went out and now you're losing your mind?"
"My phone isn't working. It says no signal." Jessy grabs MC's phone and looks at the screen. "Yours doesn't have a signal either? This is bad."
MC starts to tell her she's being overly dramatic when suddenly a chainsaw starts up just outside the living room window making both girls scream. Jessy motions for MC to be quiet, grabs her hand, and pulls her up the stairs to her bedroom using her cell phone as a flashlight. She walks over to the walk-in closet and starts feeling along the wall. MC cocks her head to the side and watches Jessy in confusion when suddenly Jessy finds what she is looking for and pulls a portion of the wall out to reveal a hidden room. She grabs her and pushes her into the room before walking in herself and placing the portion of the wall back over the entrance.
"Do I even want to know why you have a hidden room in your closet?"
"It's a long story but hopefully if whoever is out there manages to get in they won't be able to find us." She holds her phone up in the air trying once again to get a signal. "Damn it. Did hey do something to the phones?" She says trying hard not to panic.
"I'm sure there is a logical explanation for all of this even the chainsaw. You have neighbors maybe one of them had a good reason to use be using one."
Jessy presses her hand over MCs mouth to get her to stop talking. The noises from the chainsaw are getting louder as if they are inside the house. The chainsaw turns off and footsteps can be heard ascending the stairs. The footsteps get louder and louder until they are just outside the hidden room. Suddenly the door is pulled open and there is a quick flash of light. Sounds of laughter fill the air and it takes a few moments before the girls calm down enough to catch on to what is happening.
"What the hell?!" Jessy yells.
"You should have seen the look on your faces," Richy says and high-fives Dan.
"Oh wait, you can see it because I took a picture," Dan says shaking his phone at them and then laughs some more. Jessy reaches for the phone but Dan pulls it away. "Oh no, you don't."
"How did you turn the power off and what about our cellphones?" Jessy asks.
"Oh, we cut the power off outside where it connects to the house," Richy says.
"For the phones, we used a signal jammer. You'd be surprised what you can find on the internet and they are pretty inexpensive too." Dan adds.
"Honestly, I'm not sure which one of you guys I am disappointed in more," Jessy says before pushing past Richy and storming out the door only for him to follow her.
"Hey boo, welcome to Duskwood." Dan smirks.
MC angrily takes a step toward him. "Listen here, Dan-iel An-der-son" she emphasizes and pokes his chest with each syllable. "This. was. not. funny."
"You're right it wasn't funny." He says with a serious tone, "it was fucking hilarious!" He starts laughing again.
MC storms out and makes her way down the stairs and into the living room with him close behind her.
"You assholes better turn my power back on and get that dirty thing," she points to the chainsaw, "out of here."
"Yeah yeah, we will." Dan rolls his eyes.
"So does this mean we've officially dethroned the Horror Queen?" Richy jokes and nudges Dan.
"Yes! I'm going to be posting that picture all over social media with the caption horror queen: dethroned"
"Ugh, I hate you both." Jessy huffs.
