Just had the most wonderful time listening to Matt Kirkland talk Dracula Daily at Porter Square Book. A PowerPoint presentation of tumblr posts about my good friend Jonathan was not something I knew that I needed, but so glad to have experienced.

Typewronger Books, Edinburgh

This one was a queer (owned?) bookshop! I really liked the atmosphere, it was tiny but very warm and welcoming. They even gave free drinks (hot or cold) if you needed! If I lived in Edinburgh, this would probably be my go-to bookstore

Toronto Horror Bookstore - Little Ghosts Books!
Wanted to shout out this absolutely delightful independent bookstore-cafe in Toronto, Little Ghosts Books!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's got something for horror fans of all ages, it's cozy and the staff is friendly, and they have a giant skeleton in the back ;)
Got to sell some comics over there in November!
Tumblr media
Please do give them a visit! Independent bookstores deserve more love. They're in the Trinity Bellwoods area, right on the corner of the park, which on its own is a worthwhile place to visit when you're in Toronto.
(also Toronto has been weirdly warm lately so locals can just come on over anyway! Go on!)

BIPOC Bookstore Feature: Freedom to Read
Tumblr media
Meet our Summer BIPOC Bookstore feature: Freedom to Read, a Native-led program of Red Media based in Tiwa Territory (Albuquerque, NM). It aims to alleviate the financial and societal obstacles that create book scarcity in and around Indigenous communities. Support their program by purchasing books for their wish list at Massive Bookshop! Q: We're so excited to learn about Freedom to Read! Can you tell us a little bit about who your program serves, and how your partnership with Massive Bookshop works? How does Freedom to Read fit into your work with Red Media?
A: Thank you for featuring Freedom to Read! With Freedom to Read, we seek to alleviate some social and financial barriers that create book scarcity by offering free books. We prioritize Native people, but we also supply free books to community spaces wanting to highlight Native politics and history. Monetary donations go towards purchasing requested titles through Massive Bookshop. Additionally, Massive Bookshop helped us set up a book wish list on their website, where people can donate a book at a discounted price for Freedom to Read to distribute. The book wish list is a nice visual of which books Native people are requesting, and offers a vehicle of support. It’s genuinely steeped in solidarity. Q: Your program creates literary access for incarcerated Native community members, as well as libraries and schools. Have you heard back from any readers about their experience receiving books from your program? Are your participants able to make requests for your booklist?
A: Honestly, we’ve been a bit slow getting books to incarcerated people because it’s something we want to get right, and Freedom to Read is still relatively young, so we want to have more developed principles. At the moment we rely on knowledgeable people for guidance to point us toward those with a solid structure for book distribution inside prisons.
In 2022, we received a letter from an incarcerated Native person expressing their thoughts and gratitude about two books we donated, The Red Deal: Indigenous Action to Save Our Earth and Red Nation Rising: From Bordertown Violence to Native Liberation, which Noname Book Club distributed. It was such a pivotal moment indicating that these books are needed. Earlier this year, we donated books to the Nambe Pueblo Tewa Language Department, and they sent us a card thanking us for providing culturally relevant resources. It was so rewarding to know that others can experience joy from a program like this, and it’s reciprocal.
We are currently trying different approaches, figuring out what works, and people are still learning about Freedom to Read. Next year, we aim to open communication for people to request books for themselves or their relatives. Q: Your book list spans titles from children's picture books, to poetry, academic texts, and more. How did you staff select these titles in particular?
There have been very few instances where I’ll add a book I think is essential for people to read. Still, for the most part, all of the books we have on our wish list have been requested or recommended by librarians, workers, relatives, professors, and organizers wanting politics, history, and stories by Native authors and authors from oppressed communities in their space. Our booklist is carefully curated and adjusted to meet the needs of the people.

The members of the Ruffin family could release a book every year detailing the wide range of racist incidents they and their friends have experienced and never repeat a story. I’m grateful they’re sharing these experiences for everyone’s benefit but wish they didn’t have to.

Book Birthday!
Tumblr media
We briefly interrupt whatever it is we do here to let you know that our new book, AGENT STITCH: A STUDY IN SLIME  hits bookstores today! (Well, it doesn’t actually hit anything. “Arrives at” is probably a better phrase. Anyway.)
This new middle-grade series picks up shortly after the events of the original Lilo & Stitch film, and spotlights Stitch as he tries to prove that he’s more than just a havoc-making experiment. As a newly appointed operative of the United Galactic Federation’s GDA (Galactic Detective Agency), Stitch is joined by Lilo, Jumba, and Pleakley on a “road trip” in a flying RV to Paris, France. There, this found family will attempt to find the missing Cobra Bubbles and stop an impending invasion by hostile space aliens.
I’m a huge Lilo & Stitch fan, and it was an honor (as well as an absolute blast) to be asked to tell new stories.
Packed with wonderful illustrations by the talented Arianna Rea, edited by the talented, insightful Holly P. Rice, and written by yours truly, AGENT STITCH: A STUDY IN SLIME is out now! You can check it out at your local library or a bookstore, like the amazing Postmark Books.
We now return to our regularly scheduled nonsense.

Indie Bookstore Adventures: San Marcos Edition
Tumblr media
My partner lives in San Marcos, Texas, which is about an hour drive from where I currently reside in north Austin, and we alternate visits with each other on weekends. While I'm more of the reader between the two of us, we both share a love for all things goth, horror and spooky. So when I discovered that there's a new independent bookshop called Triple Six Social less than a ten minutes drive from his place specializing in All Of The Above...well, you can imagine my reaction. 😂
Tumblr media
First of all, Triple Six Social is not just a bookstore: it's also a witch shop, oddities curio, and coffee bar. Because they just recently opened (as of this post), they don't have a huge selection of books just yet, but they had some very interesting titles on the paranormal and spooky history, as well as a good collection of works from well-known horror writers. They also had a really nice selection of children's books as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also carry a variety of goods and witchy supplies from local and regional artists and creators, including some horror-themed soaps and some of the best smelling wax melts we've ever come across in our lives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(By the way, I know the artist who makes those prints – in fact, I found out about Triple Six Social because they shared it on their Instagram story! You can give them a follow and see more of their beautiful work on IG at @bekkabakerart!)
They also have a small curio room with some cool oddities (including this beautiful taxidermy mountain lion), as well as a small theatre room for horror movie nights, tarot readings, and special events. They even have a small haunted museum at the back of the building! There is a $10 fee for the museum so we decided to skip it for our first visit, but they do offer free museum days once a month so we definitely plan on returning!
Tumblr media
Right now, their coffee bar is donation-based. They had some standard espresso options and a few specialty drinks on the menu (my partner got a Victorian London fog and I got some cherry blossom green tea) and told us that they plan to expand the menu soon to include snacks as well as beer and wine.
All in all it was a fabulous first visit. The staff was so friendly and while their stock is small at the moment, I'm really excited to see how this rad little shop grows. I have a feeling it will definitely become one of our go-to spots in SMTX!
Tumblr media
(Ain't we cute? 😂)
