THE BOLT (1778) by JEAN-HONORÉ FRAGONARD
The painting we see here is of a young couple hugging, right next to a bed. The red curtains hang down elegantly, and the bed covers look disheveled and uneven. The light catches the right hand of the composition and immediately brings our attention to this couple.
The gentleman raises his right hand so that the light penetrates diagonally from his upper right hand to the lower left hand and the female’s outstretched foot. The lighting is intentionally matched to this angle. The reason the man extends his hand is because he’s closing the door.
The man is already undressed, but the lady is still clothed. This first observation allows us to conclude that at the time, it was much more challenging for women to undress themselves than it was for men. She was burdened by a corset and bothered by a petticoat.
The bed is unkempt. If we take a closer look, we see that the pillow behind the lady is breast-shaped. The pillow is almost covered by the red curtain, which suggests a vagina(labia). The enlightened parts on the bed suggest an erection. The bed occupies about half of the paintings, It symbolizes sex, love, and pleasure.
Finally, in the darkness, we see a reversed vase. The vase symbolizes virginity. There's also an apple, which symbolizes the original sin. We also notice the chair which is reversed too: “les jambes en l’air” (legs in the air), “une partie de jambe en l’air” is a french expression which litteraly means “get laid”.
The painting is well-known for its sexual and suggestive motifs, which were very popular during the ROCOCO PERIOD. The painting is in the permanent collection of the MUSÉE DU LOUVRE and has been shown all over the world.

I was very excited by twitter user Vargula's observation that some of the paintings in the background of Man Suang are well known Western artworks with a Thai/Siamese twist.
Tumblr media
These women are wearing the embroidered collars worn in traditional Thai dance.
The original painting is Gabrielle d'Estrees et un de ses soeurs.
Modern interpretations often see this painting as a representation of homosexuality although traditional views claimed it was a celebration of pregnancy.
Tumblr media
I don't recognise this blurry painting but it looks like a Thai style umbrella may have been added.
Tumblr media
We can see a man wearing a Thai headdress (chada) in this one.
The original painting is The Bolt by Jean-Honore Fragonard and is considered a symbol of the libertine spirit in the 18th Century.
Link here to her tweet.
I always find her posts very interesting 😊

I can’t believe this co op apt. in the Bronx, New York. It looks like a Victorian museum, but you can see how narrow this room is. Frankly, I’m so sick of white apts. and homes, and that’s all I see. But, this is amazing- look at the ceiling.
Tumblr media
I’m amazed- I can’t believe what they did to this apt. You can tell by the door that it was just an old co op. And, it sold for only $325,000.
Tumblr media
In classic pre-war form, the home opens into an entry foyer, off which are two convenient closets and lovely built-in bookshelves.
Tumblr media
Intricate crown moldings and custom, handcrafted ceramic tiles jumpstart the opulent interior. The sunken living room has enough space for two sitting areas. Elaborate coffered ceilings meet the hand painted floral wallpaper, one wall of which is covered with floor-to-ceiling mirrors with copper frames.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Across from the living room, the dining room serves double duty as an elegant tea room.
Tumblr media
Through here is the kitchen. It’s petite, but it has plenty of character thanks to brick tiles and fully-functioning vintage furnishings.
Tumblr media
In the master bathroom, there are imported Turkish Iznik tiles on the walls and floors, bordered by Carrara marble tiles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The master bedroom takes on a lighter feel, with white tin ceilings and moldings. The wallpaper is the Dalston Rose print from House of Hackney, a popular British company that interprets traditional designs.
Tumblr media
The showstopper, however, are the closet doors, adorned with Eastlake carvings. They are from an 1884 butler pantry.
Tumblr media
As you can see in the master, all the apartment’s radiators have received custom wrought iron and bronze cases with white marble tops.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The guest bathroom is a work of art in its own right. A replica of Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Bolt” takes up the entire wall; the owners even had to receive permission from the Louvre in Paris to have it recreated! A clawfoot tub and moody wood-paneled walls complete the look.
