grief is the defining force in "batman" as a title, but one thing that has always been utterly engrossing to me is that jay was once an outlier in what place this theme occupied in his narrative. for both bruce and dick, grief was motivational; grief was what pushed them into vigilantism. while they later utilised it in completely different ways; bruce became more stagnant and "frozen" in that moment, and for dick it was an impulse that made him more dynamic; they both viewed grief as a form of resolve (even if constituting a sisyphean task).
this is not the case for post-crisis robin jay.
jay enters the role of robin after standing up for justice that was based completely on his own moral intuitions and distaste for the criminal authority figure (the ma gunn' plotline). and while grief was there, it never served as an inspiration during his first missions.
the first time grief becomes entangled with his role as robin, it's in the two-face storyline ["batman" (1940) #410 – #411], when jay learns that bruce hid the fact that willis was murdered from him. he spends a day in his bed, before they encounter harvey on patrol, and jay tries at revenge. later, he merely cries, accusing bruce of "sparing him" knowledge of his father's demise– in other words, sparing him grief, while allowing him in the field at the same time. this is crucial in so far that jay doesn't seem to make a connection between combat and his grief. however, in response, bruce lectures jason about how grief inspires revenge, and how revenge has to be tempered into justice.
then grief becomes an important theme in the beginning of 'a death in the family,' something that i find to be often overlooked. first of all, jay is grieving after gloria. second of all, from the dialogue that is nowadays ignored because of all the retcons to the todd family story, we learn that jay is also still grieving after his parents. in "batman" (1940) #426 alfred informs: “i’ve come upon him, several times, looking at that battered old photograph of his mother and father, crying.”  to that, bruce contends: “in other words, i may have started jason as robin before he had a chance to come to grips with his parents' deaths.” and so bruce realises that the role of robin has not been beneficial for jay in grieving at all.
after years of mourning without closure, jason looks for the solution for his grief in moving on by finding a new family; since he thinks along with the role of robin, bruce is dismissing him as his son, he goes on the journey to find his biological mother instead. in my eyes, this has always been a salient moment. it shows that jay is still searching for relief in mourning in civilian life. this is his first intuition. of course, it does not stop him from turning to his secret identity when he realises sheila is in danger; it does not protect him from his death either.
but the lesson that bruce tried to teach jason in his early robin days was not lost. it was very much learned, and the consequences are tragic; the plot of the utrh is evidence of that. there, the narrative regarding grief aligns with what it has always been in "batman": it becomes a drive to vigilantism. jay is no longer pursuing closure in the civilian dimension. grief becomes something to be "tempered" into justice. and as bruce knows, the line between justice and vengeance is very thin.
so just as bruce is forever frozen in the loop of the memory of his parents' death, jason is now stuck in the moment of his death (and of the loss of his father.) both of their pleads are: no one else, never again. both of them seem to consider themselves exempt from this rule, subjecting themselves to reliving their pain to keep fighting.
still, the defining difference remains; jay's grief not only motivates his vigilantism. vigilantism is also the primary root of this grief. and years ago, he has not seen grief as a matter to be solved by vigilantism at all.

Most of my photos were from 2012 to 2016. I have learned a lot since then. My photo restoration hobby has improved my image editing skills in general. And I was curious if I tried editing one of my photos from scratch if I could improve upon my original edit from years ago.
This is my friend Nicole.
Tumblr media
( @nicolebelongs I hope you don't mind being my guinea pig for this.)
This is just a direct output of the original RAW file. RAW files are typically flat by nature so you have more latitude when processing and editing.
This is my original finished edit from 2016.
Tumblr media
I actually made a pretty big lighting mistake when shooting this photo. A beauty dish can cause harsh reflections on makeup and so Nicole's forehead bounced all that light directly into my camera. I was still learning back then and didn't know anything about makeup. All that was required was angling the dish a few degrees up or down, which feels like a pretty silly mistake all these years later.
And here is my 2023 edit. I did not reference the 2016 image until after I finished.
Tumblr media
The main priority was the glare on the forehead, but I think this is much more balanced overall as well. I also tried to fix the weird neck shadow and the lack of light in the eyes. I probably should have used a reflector originally, but thankfully Photoshop has a solution to almost any photography blunder. I removed some vellus hairs on the edge of the face, as that is not something you would notice in real life, but the camera and lights can exaggerate them. I'd also like to say I love the new remove tool. Getting rid of flyaway hairs was such a monotonous pain in the ass before and that thing just zaps them with a click.
I am also trying to learn new editing techniques I was never good at. There is a retouching technique called "dodging & burning" that I had trouble with back in the day. Mostly because finding advanced tutorials can be difficult. Much of the content on YouTube focuses on beginner techniques.
Dodging & burning was originally innovated by Ansel Adams back in the days of film. He would block portions of his negatives for a second or two so those areas would develop darker. Or he would let sections expose longer so they would be brighter. It was basically analog Photoshop. You can see a neat video of his darkroom here.
While Ansel mostly did landscapes, portrait photographers of the digital age utilize dodging & burning to help bring out dimension in the face. It's quite similar to makeup contouring, actually. It is very hard to perfectly light every nook and cranny on a face and many portrait lenses are slightly telephoto. Longer lenses compress faces to remove distortion, but you end up losing three-dimensionality as a tradeoff.
My first attempt dodging and burning did not go well but I played with this photo for a few hours trying many different approaches and I think I landed on something I like. But I have been staring at it for way too long, so it is hard for me to look at it objectively.
Tumblr media
I do wish we could all look at this on the same display. Green is notoriously difficult to keep consistent from screen to screen.
In any case, there are a dozen subtle things I did with my upgraded knowledge that may not be noticeable individually, but I'm hoping it all adds up to a better finished result.
And I guess we'll see if there is a consensus regarding the dodging & burning. Either good, bad, or just... different.

Top Semblances in RWBY
I've never seen anyone talking much about the Semblances, I have gone to see the profiles of some RWBY characters on the website: rwby.fandom.com/wiki/Semblance
Some semblances are real shit, like in My Hero Academia where there is an extremely strong Quirk and others that are completely useless.
This list will not be from strongest to weakest or best to worst, I'm going to make a numbered list.
1 - Aura Amp, user Jaune Arc, in RWBY, the person who has the most aura reserves can be considered a GOD! Jaune has the best Semblance in terms of aura, which allows him to improve not only his own Aura, but also the Auras of other people. Not only this, but Jaune is able to restore a person's aura completely, If the person's aura has been broken.
Your Semblance will improve the Shield, Healing, Physical abilities, and Semblances of others, If the topic is aura, then Jaune has the best semblance for it.
I have already criticized this semblance because I thought it was very bad, but after studying the aura a bit, I saw that this is the best semblance. It is related to the aura.
2 - Tranquility, user Lie Ren, At various times, Ren's Appearance has proven very useful, against Grimms Grimms, it's a wonder he can go through multiple Grimms as if he just didn't exist. If Ren were to be an assassin, he would probably be the best one, the evolution of his Semblance is not very good for him, but if he were to become manipulative, it would be perfect.
3 - Polarity, user Pyrrha Nikos, It allowed Pyrrha to control the magnetism of metallic objects. Do I need to explain?
In the world of RWBY Gun-weapon where the vast majority are made purely of metal, Pyrrha's semblance is a wonder.
4 - Overactive Imagination, user Neopolitan/Trivia Vanille. Neo proved to be extremely adept at using her appearance. She used it on several occasions,
After the evolution of your semblance in Ever Alter (which may or may not have affected your Semblance ) your illusions that could not be touched before now become real.
Becoming capable of creating numerous tangible clones of herself or others and even replicate the abilities and weapons of those she copy. She can also grant her clones the ability to speak with the voices of the original. If her illusions could use people's semblance it would be greatly broken.
5 - Numbing Agent, user Hazel Rainart, allowed him to be completely insensitive to pain. I don't need to say anything else, for a Berserker this semblance is heaven on earth.
6 - Aura Disruption, user Tyrian Callows, so aura for Tyrain is even something that nothing, he completely ignores the aura, at least if the person is wearing armor, some other protection other than an aura, it is death.
7 - Photographic Memory, user Velvet Scarlatina, The name is self-explanatory, It allows her to mimic people's moves, including their fighting style.
8 - Beast Mode, user Fenix Nemean, ( Fenix Nemean is a character that appears in RWBY: The Grimm Campaign ) it allows him to transform himself into a beast like state that enhances his abilities.
Beast Mode allows Fenix to enter a berserker rage, increasing his physical capabilities. This can be triggered at will, but will also be triggered automatically if Fenix is afraid or extremely angry. However, he can be forced out of it if he becomes charmed, incapacitated, stunned, or unconscious. When he enters Beast Mode, it becomes harder for him to maintain his humanity.
Fenix's transformation has been described as visually similar to Hazel's transformation from injecting Dust crystals into his body, achieving greater musculature temporarily while giving into his primal instincts
9 - Telekinesis, user Glynda Goodwitch, this woman used her semblance in basically all of her appearances during volumes 1 to 3.
Then she became an unforgettable character.
10 - Invisibility Field, user May Marigold, It allows her to create a movable field of invisibility that makes things inside unseen.
11 - Pocket Dimensions, user Fiona Thyme, It allows her to absorb and hold objects inside of a personal pocket dimension.
Her Semblance seemingly allows her to absorb and store matter into herself through the palm of her hand. The exact upper limits to how much she can absorb are unknown, though Fiona has displayed the capacity to absorb an entire cargo truck complete with its cargo. One limitation appears to be that she must physically touch the object that she is absorbing. Fiona is able to then release said stored matter in whole.
12 - Mind Control, user Jax Asturias, It allows him to control the minds of others.
Mind Control allows Jax to dominate the wills of others he makes physical contact with. This is typically achieved by telepathically influencing their minds in the form of pushing a subconscious suggestion to them.
Jax is able to use his Semblance on multiple people at a time, with its effects lasting for extended periods of time, lasting from weeks to even months. When used on others, their Auras take on a nearly identical appearance to his own.
This list was made based on my personal opinion, you can research the Semblances and make your own list but be minimally coherent.
For example, Nora's Semblance is good, but that's the problem. She can't handle large amounts of electricity, she still feels pain, and as shown in volume 8 when you can see the large amount of electricity she fell unconscious.
Adam and Yang, Both have Semblances similar, the difference is Adam needs to use weapons and Yang needs to take damage, as soon as Adam loses his weapons it's over for him his semblance is useless.
Yang has a higher risk because in addition to taking damage, she runs the risk of having her aura broken. That is why your semblance is a double-edged knife.
I must remember that all semblances feed on the aura.

So any future Hilda HCs?
I’d probably best to send this again, maybe more focused on certain characters at a later date. I’m currently doing a rewatch of the whole series (I’ve just finished the movie atm) so that should help but off the top of my head here’s a few since S3 is somewhat fresh.
Due to Hilda’s fairy background, Frida is able to siphon some essence and cast certain spells that require it (it’s like donating blood…without the blood, it’s safe). This however led Kaisa to inquire on how she was able to cast those old spells. Frida spilled the beans on Hilda and Johanna being part fairy and Kaisa wondered if getting essence from a half-fairy would be more potent and so she and Frida went to Hilda’s place. When Kaisa saw Johanna it was love-at-first-sight and she completely forgot about y she came over at first. Johanna was hesitant on what Kaisa wanted but offered to go get some tea at a cafe sometime and discuss it. This led to their first date, then their second and so on. Eventually Hilda got a witch step-mom.
After her time as a Troll, Hilda developed a slight fear of bells. While not as painful as it was when she was a troll but she can’t stand the noise.
David became an entomologist due to his strange magnetism of insects and general fascination. Louise helps take pictures of whatever bug he’s studying for his research papers. The most annoying bug he’s dealt with was the Mothman during a research trip to America alongside Hilda.
Louise became a photographer, she helps David and Hilda with their research but she is also an award winning photographer.
Alfur with a continued note-taking partnership with Adeline eventually after a few years presented her with “Engagement to be Married” papers and she signed gleefully. After a few months of planning and revisions, the wedding was both tiny and had all of the proper paperwork filed in order (Bartell was Alfur’s best elf).
Eugene eventually made it to the sea but after he saw the Trolburg harbor he makes it a point to come by and try out new material with the sailors. This annoys the freaky friends since they still don’t find him funny but the sailors do.
Frida was given a witch’s cloak as a gift from Tilde. Similar to the one Kaisa wears. It was made from Witches’ Wool, an ancient recipe lost to all but a few witches in that dimension. She explained its origins being from a demon realm where witches live on a Titan’s rotting corpse but all portals there have dryed up over the centuries.
Deputy (now Chief) Gerda while a more “by the books” chief of the safety patrol, was more understanding towards magical creatures and issues and preferred to listen first before making decisions. This has led to a number of new rules within Trolburg to accommodate its more mystical citizens as she worked to get humans more comfortable with their strange neighbors.
Wood Man slowly rebuilt the cabin Hilda and her mom lived in. He says it’s so he can have a second home away from home but secretly it’s so his old neighbors would visit more often, which they do.
Aunt Astrid helped teach Johanna and Hilda a bit of fairy magic. While it’s not as strong as it was back at fairy country and because they’re part human but there’s still a few spells that they can perform, mostly minor things (think Cantrips in D&D)
Johanna and Astrid made Hilda a new sweater with fairy magic and charms woven into it. She wears it always (washing it often of course)
That’s just a few off the top of my head atm. Hopefully after rewatching S3 I can think of some more

GitS Asks!
Anonymous asked:
I figured we were going to go the "are you my daddy?" route, but still I'm genuinely surprised that the boys, especially Donnie, haven't even considered that Ghost might be an alternate universe Donatello. I understand that they arent aware of the existence of alternate universes, but Donnie has done research and has a whole cork board dedicated to the subject, WITH PHOTOGRAPHS of three different iterations of the turtle's, all of whom bare a surprising resemblance to Ghost! At least, more so than the Rise!Turts anyways. Meanwhile, Ghost is a mutant turtle who wasn't created by Draxum, is practically a genetic clone of Donnie, is trained in ninjutsu, has a super genius iq, wields a bo staff, wears a purple mask, has brothers who are very similar to the boys, a mutant rat for a father, and was separated by his family in a way that requires a special portal machine to get back to them. Honestly, the fact that Ghost can only return to his family via portal machine should have been a big clue. Like, why is a portal the only way for him to go home? Where on earth is his home if no traditional travel methods can get him back there?
Pizza Pit hasn't happened yet, so Donnie actually hasn't done research with photographs of the different turtle iterations! And keep in mind that Donnie felt like he was copying Ghost. Everyone but Ghost thought that Donnie was just modelling himself after Ghost because they're both intelligent. Favorite color purple? Well he might as well try out a bo staff since that's what Ghost has...
Donnie was aware of a parallel dimension as an option, but he saw Ghost being his dad as more likely. His next best theory is that he's an alien of some kind. Or at least from a different planet, even if he was created on Earth.

GITS: Do you have any plans on reuniting Ghost and the boys with the rest of the 2003 turtles? Maybe in a "they're here now (Rise verse), they're looking for him (Ghost)" possibly after the Kraang situation (once they've grown)??
Spoilers! :) I promise a happy ending. What that means, I cannot say.

Sorry for the weird ask but I saw a episode of bluey called rain the other day and the relationship between the mom and bluey really reminded me of ghost
I don't/haven't watched Bluey but I appreciate you thinking of Ghost when you're watching other stuff! I hope people who know enjoy the parallel :D

At this point the feeling of being pulled in two different directions is so strong I feel like the best case/least painful solution is having some sorta inter-reality doorway that could allow back-and-forth between Ghost’s world and Rise, kinda like how the dimensions in 03 work with the Battle Nexus. I know it’s unlikely, but I’m in denial and will take comfort in the absurd mental image of being able to do ridiculous things like traveling to another reality to borrow a cup of sugar
The 03 Turtles knocking on the interdimensional doorway "hey guys yeah can we have some sugar because the methodical destruction of all but small patches of plant-life on our planet making everything uninhabitable has made it difficult to get some."

OH MY GOSH THE LAST CHAPTER OF GITS HAS TURNED ME INTO A PUDDLE OF EMOTIONAL JELLY!!! THANK YOU!!! Question time: you said previously that Ghost’s colour pallet was going to change to match the rise one at some point. I assumed that it was going to be because of his mutation from getting stung, but the whole ‘being filled with bright neon colours thing’ and feeling more at home and like he has a place in the Rise world in the last chapter is making me think that it’s going to be triggered by emotions instead. Are the boys going to notice? Will it be commented on? I cannot wait to see Ghost’s reaction!! Also, I’m assuming that when his colour pallet changes the effect of physics upon him will also - I cannot wait to see Ghost get hit hard and then be like ‘I’M FINE??? WHY AM I FINE???’.
Spoilers! But I promise it'll be mentioned more blatantly in the story when it does happen.

I LOVED the last chapter of GITS!! A big difference between the 2003 TMNT and Rise is that the 2003 turtles are not biologically related to Splinter in any way, and they possibly aren’t biologically related to each other either. They are just four turtles and a rat that happened to be in the right place at the right time to get mutated. Splinter became their father because he CHOSE to be. They are a family through CHOICE. I love that you are carrying that on into GITS!! Biological relation doesn’t matter to Ghost - why would it? It’s a legacy of love he is passing on to the Rise boys, and I think it’s beautiful.
For 2003 it's very likely that they're biologically brothers, because they were sold at the same time from the same pet store, likely from the same tank. They were probably a part of the same clutch! But Splinter taking them in definitely taught them that choosing is important. Knowing April and Casey, meeting the rest of their friends, the turtles know. They know what it means to choose family. Biological relation has never mattered to Ghost. Even if his brothers weren't biologically related to him at all, he would still feel the same about them.
It's kind of why Ghost doesn't understand Rise Splinter well. Why would he choose to take in these kids when he acts like he doesn't want them half the time?

stuck on the idea for months that like even if in canon sainw is happening in live time while ghost’s with his kids what if his brothers just show up one day as teenagers and are like “we’re so sorry it took us so many months to get here we fought to find you with every second of the day” and ghost’s just there like “IM IN MY F O R T I E S WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU MEAN MONTHS” and that’s how everyone discovers that the rottmnt dimension moves time at rocket speed in comparison to 2k3
Oh man THAT would be a fun AU. Dang. Oof. Ouchie.

Referencing the GITS ask about 16 yr old 2003 Donnie finding newly mutated Splinter and Turtle Tots; what would change for Splinter? He suddenly has this 16 year old to deal with that’s expecting him to be amazing and wise to go along with horribly mutating into a rat and massive amounts of trauma. Would having 03 Donnie there help, or make things worse for Splinter? Would Splinter give in to his depression and mental health issues earlier because 03 Donnie is there to watch the babies? Does he feel the need to parent 03 Donnie? Does the fact that 03 Donnie has gone through some traumatic experiences make Splinter more determined not to train the Rise boys or convince him that they need training for their own protection when they are old enough? Also does Rise Donnie get given a different name because 03 Donnie is there? If he gets given his cannon name, what do the Rise babies call 03 Donnie when they start to speak? (Sorry this has so many questions - this idea kidnapped my brain and wouldn’t give it back)
I imagine Lou (because he is still Lou at this point) would feel responsible for Don as well. Don is scared, he just got separated from his family, he's been through shit. Don calls his dad "sensei" or "father" or "Master Splinter", so Lou wouldn't use Splinter as a nickname. Don would also be talking about his brothers. This boy spills everything instantly. Lou immediately knows everything about their lives. He doesn't tell Don about his, because he's still just a kid. He's younger than Lou was when he left home to be a movie star.
Don being there would help and make things worse. On one hand, Lou feels guilty for the days he can't help Don, and it feels like Don's doing everything on his own. Don helps look after the kids, he helps fix up the lair, he helps set up security, he's working on his portal. He just works all the time. The only way Lou can get him to stop is if he asks him to watch the kids. And it does sort of let his depression seep in a little faster, because he's got someone covering for him.
He still parents Don. Tries to take care of him, tries to teach him. Don is the one who approaches him asking for training, because he's been doing it his whole life, and he enjoys it. It gives him a way to let out energy when his mind is tired and he wants to rest it. It reminds him of his family, makes him feel closer to them. He still goes out to do patrols every night, still saves people in trouble as quietly as he can. Lou worries about him, but he can hardly stop him from doing what he wants. He isn't Don's father. It makes him more determined not to train the little ones, but they'll end up mimicking Don, wanting to know what he's doing. Don ends up teaching them little things. Lou and Don probably get into a big argument about it.
I think all the Rise boys would get different names in this case, because Lou knows Don's name and his brothers' names. Raphael would be Alessandro (Sandro), Donatello would be Masaccio (Masa), Michelangelo would be Angelico (Angie), and Leonardo would be Titian (Ti).

From the elaborately choreographed dance number the boys pulled off in “Mascott Melee”, it’s obvious that they spend a lot of time practicing dancing together. Does Ghost ever catch them at it? On a scale of 1-10 how adorable does he think it is? Have the boys ever put a little show on for him? Do they ever try to get Ghost to dance with them? CAN Ghost dance?
Watching them dance? They do it all the time, and Ghost enjoys watching. He's never joined in, always insisting he can't dance. They try to get him to join in, but he just refuses. He likes watching them more. CAN he? I feel like Ghost can dance in the same way that Aang from ATLA can dance. His fighting is his dancing.

For some reason, despite not really wearing clothes, all of the Rise boys wear pj's. Do they ever get ghost pj's? What is his reaction? Does he actually wear them?
I like to think they get a lil chilly at night and that's why they wear PJs. Sometimes Donnie sleeps entirely nekkid (Purple Jacket) so I imagine it depends on what they're feeling at the moment.
The boys 100% get Ghost pajamas. They're strawberry PJs. He loves them and wears them especially in winter.

Do the boys ever play their music for Ghost? What does he think? How does he react in front of the boys?
The boys definitely play their music for Ghost! He listens to it and sees how they can enjoy it. Personally he likes classic rock the most but he's not terribly picky, either. He tends to go with "I see why you like this song" kind of vibes, even if he doesn't like it personally. He likes hearing their music. Gives him a little insight to the inside of their heads.

GITS: Were April’s science fairs any less of a disaster with Ghost there to supervise?
Nope not at all. If anything they were even crazier. Ghost didn't help out with April's science projects! He let that be an April and Donnie thing. He does has helped April with her science homework occasionally if Donnie was too busy.

It was awesome to see Ghost and Splinter actually start to get a little closer in the last chapter. I think they both need it - they need to see each other as the actual people they are rather than the shadows of the people the represent to one another.
Yeah, they do. It's a slow process. Splinter's starting to learn how Ghost likes to be cared about, and Ghost is starting to see that Splinter actually cares.

Anonymous asked:
Does Ghost have an opinion on Lou Jitsu and his movies? And does Splinter know what that opinion is? What is Splinter’s opinion of Ghost’s opinion?
Before Ghost found out that Splinter was Lou Jitsu, he enjoyed the movies quite a bit! They reminded him of something his Michelangelo would really like, of movie nights with his brothers. Splinter overheard Ghost's opinion of the movies from his boys, and from Ghost. He's very pleased that Ghost likes them.
After Ghost finds out Splinter was Lou Jitsu, he stopped watching the movies unless he was watching them with the boys. It just made him think of how different everything was. He's learning to enjoy them again, slowly.

Hadir's Bio
Tumblr media
"History has to run its own course!"
More details on Hadir is under the cut
Name: Hadir Lazaar
Age: 196
Height: 162 cm
Birthday: 16 Secuna 1826 (Khra'ia)
Orientation: Transgender Heterosexual Female
Pronouns: She/Her
Species: Chronoven (formerly human)
Title: The Tenth Hour
Country of Birth: Kaldam
Likes: History, mint tea, vegetable pot pies, tea eggs
Dislikes: Mutton, stealing, destruction of historical artefacts, sandstorms
Hobbies: Photography, archeology, meditation
Personality: Meticulous and curious, she's the go-to whenever someone wants a detailed record of an artefact and/or a summarised history lesson and the last option to go to for romantic advice. Acts extroverted around museum visitors as well as beings she's not particularly close to, but is in fact introverted at heart
Style: Clothing suited for dry and hot climates as well as sandstorms, with scarves being a must-have due to being self-conscious about her neck scar as well as secretly thinking that scarves are cool
Abilities: Able to freely cross between Ratein and the Astral Realm without the need of dimension gates. Is able to use cosmic magic, stop time, view events happening in the past, present and future, as well as cause anything that her weapon comes in contact with to 'dissociate' from existence (apart from chronovens, The Caretaker and The Artiste)
Like the rest of the Hourly Twelve, Hadir is also able to open portals that allow her to travel anywhere. Also able to reverse time, but only once and at the cost of her life. Being a chronoven, she's only able to die either by her lifespan naturally running out, or by time reversal
Possibly due to her occupation as a museum curator, she possesses the ability to 'erase' someone from existence if she tears up any photographs of them (apart from chronovens, The Caretaker and The Artiste)
Background: A woman with a passion for history and the like, Hadir naturally landed a museum curator job at Kaldam National Museum. In 1851, a meteorite necklace was brought to the museum, its history unknown to all. Curious by the unknown artefact, Hadir involved herself in extensive research which costed her romantic relationships at the time
After four years of research, she discovered that the meteorite necklace originated from a nearby crater in the country, and that there were others just like it. She also learnt that they were made in around 130000 BCE, which surprised her as the necklace the museum was in possession of was in surprisingly excellent condition
A year after her initial discovery of the necklace's history, she stumbled across a secret cave that was filled to the brim with murals about the necklace. Hadir was able to make out that the necklace had something to do with time and stars, and wondered what the necklace truly represented with relation to these themes
After asking around, Hadir soon came across rumours that the necklace had the ability to grant someone's wish. Concerned by possible greedy natures of others, she kept the necklace on her person at all times so as to ensure that no one could abuse it. One night in Alstas 1857, the museum was subject to a robbery. Hadir and two other researchers were present as the robbery took place, with all three of them doing their best to prevent the historical artefacts from being stolen. During this process, the robbers casted explosion magic which claimed the lives of both security guards as they shielded her from the blast
Hadir, the only survivor, was overcome with guilt as their attention was divided between the museum's security as well as hers while she worked overtime to learn more about the necklace. She then wished that she had just gone home instead of doing overtime so that her friends didn't have to worry about protecting her, with the necklace seemingly acceding to her wish by glowing
Shocked, Hadir could only stare blankly at the necklace as the scarf around her neck started to fragmentalise. She howled in pain as her body was wracked with a burning sensation, and her right eye felt like it was being branded. Her eyes widened with recognition as she was breaking up and reforming in a galaxy
After an eternity, James had approached her and introduced himself. They were about to explain what she was but was interrupted by Hadir, who excitedly asked if their unusual existence had something to do with the necklace. Remarking that the museum curator was far more adjusted than expected, James confirmed that the necklace was indeed the reason to their new existence as chronovens
They added that while they had time-related abilities, time reversal came at the cost of their own lifespan and should Hadir choose to do so, her existence would be erased from Ratein save for those extremely close to her. She understood what James meant, and could only clench her fists tightly as even though she wanted to save her colleagues, her passion advised her to learn from her mistakes and prevent others from doing the same, as well as use her new abilities for good
Sympathising with Hadir, James reassured her that she wasn't doing her late colleagues any disservice for not sacrificing herself for them, and that even if she did so, there was a good possibility that they would've died all the same in the robbery. Accepting this course in history, Hadir returned back to the museum where she continues to guard the artefacts and provides The Fourteenth Dullahan with self-approved research on the chronovens…

"Let's do this thing! My name is Hollie Connors, I was bitten by a radioactive spider, and for the last six months I've been the one and only Spider-Girl!"
"You probably can guess the rest - beat up some bad guys, get beat up by those badguys, hang out with my best friends MJ and Eugene, and take some pictures for the paper as my main gig."
"New York in my dimension is pretty flooded, some historic global warming left the ground under six feet of oceanwater and constantly raining, so things like Sunshine are pretty memorable! Along with the supervillains, and me fighting those villains of course. Making the front page isn't exactly new for me anymore."
"But I keep going at it, despite how much I might fall from all that rain or breaking an arm, because I know what I do is worthwhile for my city. And I'd say I'm pretty good at it!"
"At least... in my world. Heh. I mean, have you SEEN those other guys-"
Meet my Spidersona/ Spiderverse Oc, Hollie also known as Spider-Girl(by her city) or Rain (by other spider people when they eventually visit).
I have lots of ideas for her lol
Her New York is flooded, so people get around on jet skis and other somewhat futuristic aquatic transportation. There are also some floating sidewalks and platforms for businesses and homes, and the city has built upwards even more.
It constantly rains in her dimension, and she made non-slip shoes specifically for traversing in the rain. That's also why she wears a poncho, also it's a cute costume I find.
I actually looked up who spider-girl is, which helped me inform her backstory a bit, though it's also mashed with Spider-Man's. - She's adopted by a couple who raised her (now divorced), and she works as a photographer as she attends high school.
She went to get some pictures while a reporter interviewed a CEO who was trying to find a way to control the weather - make it so sunny days weren't so rare - and accidentally stumbled into a secret lab. She soon was stumbling around, getting bit by a radioactive spider, and got flushed out by the sewer.
Hollie's motivating event was not the death but the severe injury of her friend Eugene who was paralyzed from the waist down. She saw some criminals mugging people but stayed out of it, but then later Eugene was paralyzed after an attack gone extremely wrong. She realized that the pain she felt was likely also felt by the loved ones of those she saw being mugged in the past. Queue the "Great Power, Great Responsibility" lesson and her starting out as Spider-Girl.
That company she stumbled into was evil too, I don't know enough about Spider-Man to give it a specific name, but it was experimenting with animal DNA to try and make super humans and use it for crimes. Also just general evil plans like monopolize sunshine
Her world isn't very serious most of the time, even with the city being flooded life just kinda carries on like it's normal. Not super cartoony, but it has a levity and pretty good status quo compared to other spider-people.
I based Hollie off myself in many ways, but I wanted to have fun with this character lol
((I have many thoughts on how she would interact with other spider-people, and some other extra ideas for Hollie and the World, might reblog this with those later))

Reading and Response #3- Projection: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt
Sean Cubitt dives into some of the fundamentals of drawing and painting. He examines these principles and how they translate into video and film. Cubitt begins his article by historically diving into the Buddhist tale of the origin of art and how it compares to Pliny’s story of the origins of paining and use of light and shadows. These tales go into the origin of use of line, light, reflection, shadow, and projection. Projection is a very important word in this article. From artists projecting light and shadows onto prints, as well as lines and colors; Cubitt also explores the metaphorical meaning of projection. How we as humans use projection. It is vital in childhood and human development. Think back to when we were children and could not communicate properly with words we would have to project emotion to get across what we were needing. Projection could be literal, metaphorical, implied,etc. In video art you are able to project all of the above. With the creation of film and cameras artist had the ability to visually project their message. Rather that message be direct or implied, the artist had more resources at their fingertips to create their visual work. Art is considered a way to preserve. Video would be the ultimate preservation tool. To capture a moment in time, forever. A way to outlive Father Time. This made me think if this is something video artists consider when starting their project. Is that part of the purpose of using video? For this particular artwork to “cheat death”. With today’s technology like the internet and media platforms, even if a video is deleted does it really “die” or does it live forever in some spaces? Do artists consider that aspect today?

Pipilotti Rist, Open my Glade, Times Square, 2016. “For instance, he work of Pipilotti Rist is notable in the proportions that Video Art has taken in recent decades. In 2016, she was selected to exhibit her work in Times Square. The artwork consisted of 62 video screens, monumental in size, right in the middle of all the advertising screens in Times Square. On these 62 screens, looping over several days, numerous videos were shown. There, in the middle of one of the most emblematic squares of capitalism, she smashed her face against a window that was placed just a few centimeters from the camera lens. Her face deformed, her makeup spread out, she questioned, brutally, the gaze that the spectator has on feminine beauty.” https://blog.artsper.com/en/a-closer-look/what-is-video-art/

Nothing Will Be the Same
Jonathan’s perspective on Steve in season 1 and season 2, as he witnesses Steve go from King Steve to a pretty damn good babysitter.
On AO3.
Ships: first Steve x Nancy, then Nancy x Jonathan when they break up.
Warnings: bullying and hint of shitty parents
King Steve Dethroned: Jonathan's POV, Robin's POV & Eddie's POV.
~~~~~~~~~~
Jonathan is pulled into King Steve’s orbit by some cruel twist of faith in his Sophomore year. Steve may be a year above him, but he has taken a liking to Nancy. Now Jonathan isn’t close with Nancy, but Will is close with Mike, so they’re connected in a way. And with Steve as her boyfriend, he’s connected to him as well.
Not that Steve is in any way aware of that connection. He just goes on his merry douche-y way, brushing alongside Jonathan’s world more than Jonathan would like and taking his asshole friends with him.
Granted, Steve might not be so bad as Tommy H., who seems to take a sick pleasure out of kicking people when they’re down, but Steve… Well, Steve is King Steve. He is the man. He has it all. Nice house, rich parents, all the girls and popularity.
He’s the golden boy, who can’t do anything wrong and even if he throws parties every weekend and Jonathan has seen Tommy H. getting drugs from Munson.
It’s just fucking unfair that he gets to stand there and look pretty, while all the world bows down to his whims. Even Nancy, who Jonathan had always thought above that (hoped, maybe) is turning into a blushing mess around the boy.
Jonathan has already resigned himself to a tiring year of rude comments not directed at him, but loud enough to hear. A year of seeing Steve whenever he needs to pick up Will. A year of torment and if it all goes wrong another year extra before the douchebags graduated.
His year turns out to be nothing like that.
Will goes missing. His little brother. Gone. And Jonathan was supposed to be home when he disappeared. He was supposed to be there for Will. But when the kid truly needed him, he hadn’t been there.
Suddenly, King Steve and his crew don’t matter to him. Nancy doesn’t matter. What matters is finding Will. What matters is keeping his mom together through it all.
However, just because his world is falling apart doesn’t mean that anyone cares about it. Nancy made a pitiful attempt, but that’s it. He still has a target on his back. King Steve still doesn’t like him and therefore no one does.
He shouldn’t care about it. He doesn’t care about it. It’s just painful that his head is already so full of worries, guilt and all sorts of other confusing emotions that have him acting in ways he normally wouldn’t, and he has to deal with those dicks on top of it too. He was just so shocked by the idea that life is still normal for them, that they could party when Will is missing.
That’s quickly forgotten however, because why the fuck should he care about his camera when Will is dead? When he is looking at coffins. When Nancy is there again. When he has photographed something so horrible. When they nearly die themselves.
When Will has a chance of being alive.
He is working together with Nancy – and yeah he likes that, but he’s a bit occupied. Together they’re building an arsenal to take on a monster.
This is Hawkins, apparently. This is his life. Buying guns, gasoline and bear traps with Nancy Wheeler to take on a monster from another dimension that took his little brother. That killed Barbara. It’s fucking insane.
And from anyone who isn’t them it’s still insane, because Steve and his little gang have decided to interpret his interactions with Nancy very differently. Granted, Jonathan would have found it a little weird if they had guessed inter-dimensional monster, but immediately jumping to cheating and spray painting it for the town to see is a bit much.
He can see that Nancy is upset about the whole thing and he wants to pull her away from it all. They have other things to worry about than Steve and his stupid cronies.
The sad part is that he almost manages too. He’s already walking away, but Steve’s just there in his ear, hammering on: “You know what, Byers? I'm actually kind of impressed. I always took you for a queer, but I guess you're just a little screw-up like your father. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that house is full of screw-ups. You know, I guess I shouldn't really be surprised. A bunch of screw-ups in your family.”
He can feel his fist clench, Nancy saying: “Jonathan leave it.”
But it’s not about her family. Steve is not mentioning her as he says: “I mean, your mom... I'm not even surprised what happened to your brother.”
“Steve, shut up!” yells Nancy and Jonathan would be more glad for her help, if there weren’t so much rage already bubbling under the surface.
So when Steve says: “I'm sorry I have to be the one to tell you, but the Byers, their family, it's a disgrace to the entire-” Jonathan makes sure he can’t finish that sentence.
All the anger at Steve’s words, at the world, at his own actions comes pouring out of him. The fear that he has turned to anger comes out as he wails down on Steve, who goes down with such little a fight that Jonathan wonders why the fuck anyone is scared of him.
It feels good. Like he’s finally getting retribution for years of scorn, getting tripped over, called names.
Until the police arrive and golden boy King Steve gets away, while Jonathan gets arrested. The whole thing feels a bit like a metaphor for their lives.
He’s lucky the Chief is involved with it and lets him go to catch up with the kids, because of course Will’s friend have gotten involved with this. He isn’t close with the kids, has mostly seen them in passing, but he’s glad his brother has such good friends.
Though, if he’s honest, if he hadn’t been through the last 24 hours, he would have thought they had turned to fantasy to cope with the loss of their friend. But no, the girl has actually superpowers and they’re building a bath for her to find Will in another dimension.
But he can’t let his mom go into danger without trying to help. His little brother is missing and he needs to do something other than sit with a few middle schoolers in an abandoned gym at night. So, he convinces Nancy to go. To fight.
He has always known she has more spirit than most in Hawkins, which is confirmed by the stubborn set of her jaw as she agrees.
They set up all the Christmas lights, set out the bear trap and douse the floor in gasoline. Then they cut their hands, waiting for the lights to start flickering and a monster to come out of the wall. Just when he thinks his life can’t get weirder, Steve is on his doorstep wanting to apologize.
When he first knocks, both Nancy and Jonathan jump out of their skin, thinking it to be the demogorgon. However, then they hear Steve call: “Jonathan? Are you there, man? It's- it's Steve. Listen, I just want to talk.”
He’s banging on the door, but it doesn’t sound angry, just desperate. Still, Jonathan freezes and Nancy moves, opening the door. “Steve, listen to me,” she says.
“Hey,” Steve greets before he realizes that it’s Nancy. “Nancy what-”
“You need to leave,” she tells him firmly before he can finish the question.
“I’m not here to start anything, okay,” he promises and any other night Jonathan would have gladly let him in to see King Steve grovel. But not tonight.
“I don’t care about that. You need to leave,” Nancy repeats, desperate to get him away from the danger and a part of Jonathan wants to roll his eyes.
But Steve isn’t hearing her, not really – and isn’t that just typical – because he continues: “No, no, no. Listen, I messed up, okay? I messed- I messed up. Okay? Really. Please. I just want to make things right. Okay? Please. Please...”
And of course Nancy is weak for him, because she stammers, torn between wanting to give in and knowing how dangerous it is.
The action reveals her hand, now bandaged and Steve frowns: “Hey, what happened to your hand? Is that blood?”
“Nothing,” Nancy stutters, but it’s too late for the excuse. “It was an accident.”
“Yeah? What’s going on?” Steve demands.
“Nothing,” Nancy repeats.
But Steve is on a track and of course he’s jumping to the least flattering conclusion as he says: “Wait a sec, did he do this to you?”
“No.”
“Nancy, let me in,” Steve starts to try to get in, all his talk about wanting to make it right rendered obsolete.
“No. No! No, Steve!” Nancy yells as she tries in vain to stop him.
But Steve is already inside, coming face to face with the insanity that they have only just learned about. He must think we’re loonies, Jonathan thinks bitterly, all his little theories about my family confirmed.
Still, he hates Steve, but he doesn’t want him dead. So when the lights start to flicker, he joins Nancy’s attempts to get Steve away from their trap that he wasn’t meant to be caught in.
Nancy even points a gun at him and if Jonathan believed Steve was anything but a player, he would see heartbreak in Steve’s expressive eyes (that Jonathan has heard too much about from giggling girls).
Yet, Steve doesn’t go. He stands there, confused and hurt as Jonathan and Nancy are distracted by the arrival of the demogorgon.
After that it’s all chaos for a moment. They run for their lives dragging Steve along, their trap not enough as they hide in Will’s bedroom. Outside they hear it roam free, not falling in their trap as behind them Steve freaks out. “Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Jesus! Jesus! What the hell was that? What the hell was that?”
Both he and Nancy yell at the same time for him to shut up.
Outside the noises stop and the house is eerily quiet. When it drags on, they tentatively open the door, fully prepared to come face to face with a giant monster, ready to eat them. However, there is nothing there and when they go further into the house. It’s abandoned.
Behind them Steve is muttering: “This is crazy. This is crazy. This is crazy. This is crazy! This is crazy! This is crazy!”
He rushes to the phone, trying to dial 911, but Nancy just pulls the phone out of his hands and crushes it, Jonathan winces slightly. Steve cries: “What are you do- What are you doing? Are you insane?”
Jonathan continues messing with the trap, he’s done with King Steve, who can’t fight and is only in their way with nothing to add, since his brawn hasn’t done much yet. Mentally he cheers when Nancy straightens up, her shoulders squared as she sharply says: “It's going to come back! So you need to leave. Right now.”
And Steve leaves, like Jonathan has always expected he would. Steve is a lot of talk, but he has never stood for anything himself. He lets himself go with what everyone expects from him and doesn’t complain. He’s weak and he runs.
If Jonathan had more time, he would have probably reflected more on King Steve running like a coward. However, he’s quite occupied with attempting to fight of a demogorgon, who has pinned him down and is ready to eat his face.
Faintly he hears Nancy screaming and a gun going off, but it doesn’t seem to do more than irritate it. Even if it yells at her.
He is already accepting his faith as demogorgon chow, heart aching at his mother who will loose her other son, two if she doesn’t find Will, when the demogorgon suddenly backs off. Well, not backs off necessarily. It gets hit and falters.
Through bleary eyes Jonathan sees the familiar silhouette of Steve Harrington.
His shoulders are broad and he holds the nail bat that Jonathan had dropped with confidence as he strikes down. At some point Jonathan sees him twirl the bat before beating the demogorgon further into the house. The monster bending to his will as he fearlessly battles it back into the trap he has set with Nancy, one that Steve only glanced at moments before.
Jonathan wants to compare him to the picture perfect image of the High King Steve, but whoever is fighting off a demon from another dimension isn’t King Steve. He’s closer to a knight, running in to slay the beast and save the damsel.
But he shakes it off, since that would make him a damsel. Nancy too. And Nancy isn’t a damsel at all.
He’s torn out of his hazed thoughts by Steve loudly yelling: “He's in the trap! He's stuck!” followed by Nancy screaming: “Jonathan, now!”
Quickly he climbs to his feet running over, nearly tripping as he gets out the lighter and torches the motherfucker. They watch it burn for a few seconds, before Jonathan douses it. The last thing he wants to do is burn down his mother’s house.
When the smoke clears, there is nothing to be seen of the demogorgon. There is no smoldering corpse. No blood.
Nancy asks where it is, but Jonathan refuses to believe it’s anything but dead. Besides them Steve is panting, his eyes still wide and frantic as they zoom around the hallway looking for a trace of the demogorgon.
It hits Jonathan that Steve came back for them.
Steve ran back into the house, fully knowing how dangerous it was. He knew he could die – almost did die – and yet he did it anyway. He did it despite the fact that both Jonathan and Nancy told him to go and no one would hear of King Steve shamefully running or his heroic return. He just did it.
None of it makes sense to Jonathan, who has had years to study Steve. It’s not some weird obsessive thing as all the bullies seem to think, he just likes studying people and Steve is an easy to spot target to track.
And if Jonathan knows one thing about Steve, it’s that it is all about image. All about what people see, even if Jonathan has spotted cracks in his perfect picture.
Everyone knows the rumors about his parents. How they fight. How they cheat. How they drink. How they don’t care about little Stevie. But whenever they’re in town, you can bet they’re spotted in the finest restaurant, all dressed up, smiling like a family with no issues. So, the rumors remain just rumors, which only a handful of people believe.
But Jonathan has seen Steve sitting outside the school by himself, twiddling with his thumbs, hunched over, like he wanted nothing more than to disappear. It was the day after his parents’ return and Jonathan had watched in confusion as he straightened up and was all smiles and perfect charm when his friends rolled up.
The Steve in his living room is looking a lot like that Steve and Jonathan doesn’t know what to do with that. He has never seen him crack when he thought others could see him.
Then the lights start up again and they all tense up. Steve’s mask is forgotten as Jonathan’s eyes slide over the lights and walls, trying to spot the tear in reality before it’s too late. But he notes the lights are different. Too different to be the demogorgon.
A small hope lights up in his chest so when Nancy wonders where it’s going, he smiles: “I don't think that's the monster.”
After that, they finally breathe for a moment, all nearly collapsing. They drink some water and it is weird to exist in the same room as Steve Harrington amiably. Once the glasses are empty, Steve finally asks again: “So what the hell just happened?”
And Nancy tells him. She tells him about how Will went missing, Barb getting dragged from his pool due to the blood, how she and Jonathan hunted it, how her brother and his friends found a girl with psychic powers, the bathtub, the lab.
Throughout it all Steve looks more and more ill, though it already looked like he was going to throw up when Nancy told him about Barb in a broken voice.
When she’s done, he takes a deep breath and rubs his brow, flinching when he hits the black eye Jonathan gave him earlier. He says: “If I didn’t just see what I saw, I would think you’re absolutely crazy, Nance.”
The comment makes her laugh, because of course it does. Of course Steve ran back and saved the day, even if it wouldn't affect his popularity, because Nancy is right here and she’s laughing at his stupid not-funny joke.
To break the tension, he says: “I have to go to the hospital. If mom- if she has Will, that’s where she’ll go.”
“Of course, Jonathan,” Nancy says, her kind attention immediately on him. “I- I have to go find Mike again. See if he’s okay.”
“I can drive you,” Steve offers and Jonathan rolls his eyes as Nancy thanks him.
They awkwardly say their goodbyes, getting in their separate cars and driving away. The mess in the house can wait, he has a baby brother to find.
Arriving at the hospital and finding his mom there with Hopper and Will quickly dispels any thoughts of Steve. He’s still concerned, there is still so much to say, but Will is there. Will is alive and that is all that matters right now.
If he had taken the time, he would have thought he would see Steve again at school whenever he returned.
He hasn’t taken that time, however, that doesn’t mean he isn’t surprised when he sees Steve sitting alongside the others in the waiting room. The kids are now seeing Will, so it’s just the three of them again and Steve must notice his confused blinking because he explains: “I offered to drive the kids and Nancy home later.”
“Oh,” Jonathan says. “That’s nice.”
Then they’re quiet for a second, the three of them letting the awkward quiet settle about them. Until Nancy says: “I’m sure Will needs the rest. We’ll be out of your hair soon. I’m glad they found him and he’s alright.”
That gets a smile out of Jonathan, also relieved and elated at the return of his brother. It’s too great a news to bother himself with thoughts of Steve about, so he just thanks her softly and goes back the hospital room.
He’s not at school the next day, nor the day after that, however he walks back into high school on the third day after they’ve found Will. It is almost a surreal experience. Everyone moves like they’ve always done, like nothing is different, like everything is the same.
Well, not everything.
Whispers follow him down the hall, this is par of the course, but they’re also following Steve. And they’re different to the whispers that usually follow the man. They’re speculation about his bruises – which also follow Jonathan – about the rumors that have been spread about Nancy, then Steve, by Tommy H. and Carol. The whispers are mean. Questioning. Calculating.
But Steve still swaggers down the hall despite it. That same picture perfect image still there even if it’s marred by bruises. He is no longer flanked by his generals, but the walk of a man with people behind him is still there.
Jonathan notes that there is no Nancy under his arm, no girls twiddling about him.
And Jonathan knows it has been a few days since that first day, the day when the whispers must have been the loudest. When it was all new and exciting, the way his whispers are now. But two whole days have already passed. Most of the rumors have taken on their own lives and if it were normal, a few girls should already be there to ‘mend his broken heart’ or ‘hear of his heroic battle,’ but there are none.
So, that first day back at school Jonathan watches Steve carefully and curiously. He watches how he doesn’t sit with Tommy H. and the basket ball team, but with the swim team. Watches how his eyes track Nancy. How he talks less. Doesn’t flirt. Just goes about his day.
It’s really fucking weird and Jonathan is saying that as someone, whose brother was just lost in a different dimension, while Jonathan fought of a monster and met a girl with superpowers.
All of it feels a bit like something isn’t aligned correctly. As if the laws of the universe have slightly bend and everything is just a touch to the left.
He comes by the Wheeler house to drop of Will and it’s like it’s a year ago again, when Will wasn’t allowed to bike alone. He isn’t again.
However, it doesn’t take long for everything to snap back into place. A month after everything happened, it seems like the world moves on. Steve wins a swim tournament and a few days later Nancy is back under his arm.
Nancy gives him a camera to replace the one Steve broke for her honor. He still feels guilty about those pictures. About why he took them. But he can’t take them back, just like Nancy can’t take back her choosing Steve.
It shouldn't hurt. He should be used to it by now. All is returning to normal, people are moving on, or back, and this is just part of it.
Yet it still hurts and the only nice thing about it is that he gets to hate Steve again without feeling guilty, because Steve saved his life.
So, yeah, all in all, come 1984 things are normal again in Hawkins.
There are some minor changes of course. 1) Jonathan knows what’s out there now, 2) Will is more withdrawn and quiet, 3) Nancy has turned back to normal, relentless, headstrong, and 4) Steve has stopped hanging around Tommy H. and Carol and is actually acknowledging Jonathan’s existence like a person.
But overall, it’s like the Upside Down has never happened. They’re all trying to move on, even though they can’t.
Jonathan knows they can’t. He knows that he still flinches when the lights flicker, he has had Nancy call him in the middle of the night asking if he’s okay. Hell, he has even seen Steve in his car looking to the world with unseeing eyes as he takes shuddering breaths. It looked pathetic and Jonathan has tried to forget it.
Summer rolls by and changes into fall. With the new weather, change comes to town in the shape of Max and her brother Billy.
He doesn’t concern himself much with Max, but Billy is interesting. He is a potential new bully and Jonathan makes sure to steer clear, but he’s also the first person, who has posed a serious threat to Steve’s already wavering popularity.
It’s like he has come there to knock Steve down a peg, to own the school, and it is fascinating to observe.
Girls flock to Billy like it’s nobody’s business and he joins every sports team, automatically excelling with nothing but a smug smirk. He’s one of the worst bullies Hawkins High has seen in ages. Truly puts into perspective how little Steve did.
What’s most interesting, however. Is how Steve becomes a target. It’s not a big scale bullying campaign or anything, but Billy has put his eyes on him and Steve is no longer popular enough to have people rally behind him. It’s a true one vs. one. And Steve is very clearly loosing.
Billy is usurping Steve’s throne, but it’s like he doesn’t care at all. Jonathan expected him to fight tooth and nail for it, to try and hold on to his high school glory days, the only peak he is going to get and the only thing a guy like him cares about. Yet, that’s not what happens. Steve continues going to school, trying to ignore Billy’s taunts as he lives his life.
The whole thing is odd and Jonathan doesn’t know what to think.
Halloween is when it truly starts to change. Jonathan doesn’t know what has happened exactly, but he watched Nancy get very drunk, then disappear with Steve, only for the two to come down together moments later. Steve looks close to tears, Nancy still out of it, as he asks Jonathan to take her home.
A part of Jonathan wants to ask what happened, ask if Steve is alright, but he stomps that part down harshly. Steve is douche and never deserved Nancy. If they broke up, good riddance.
But it’s never good riddance with Steve, because even though Nancy has been with him the whole time. They tried to get revenge for Barb. They had sex. He has the girl. Steve never leaves him the fuck alone.
Jonathan wonders why he’s even surprised to find Steve at Hawkins lab, Dustin, Lucas and Max in tow with him. He wants to get mad. Wants to ask if he’s come crawling back to Nancy again after leaving her to suffer about Barb all by herself. But before he can do something stupid there are roars in the air and a chill goes down his spine. Will is in there.
Fuck, Will is in there. Again trapped in a horrible situation. And again Jonathan can’t reach him. Can’t protect him.
So, when those cars come driving and Will is there, his mom is there, both safe, he doesn’t care that Steve is there. Why should he care about a jock trying to impress Nancy when she knows better, when his family is safe?
Naturally he changes his tune about his family being safe when he hears about the being that has invaded Will’s mind. Fuck, his own baby brother held captive again, this time in his own head and Jonathan can’t go and hit something to keep him safe.
They have a plan, sure, but so much can go wrong. He wants the safety of Nancy with him, to hold onto during this. But he can’t ask her to leave Mike behind. God knows he of all people should understand wanting to keep you kid brother safe.
Then he hears his name. He doesn’t mean to overhear, he’s just stuffing some of the shit they need into the car when he hears Steve say: “With Jonathan.”
And for a second he assumes, Steve is really asking Nancy about what’s going on between them in these circumstances, until Nancy scoffs: “No, I'm- I'm not just gonna leave Mike,” and Jonathan realizes Steve is telling her to go with him.
“No one’s leaving anyone,” Steve assures her and Jonathan hates he’s gaining some sort respect for the jock when he jokes: “I may be a pretty shitty boyfriend, but turns out I'm actually a pretty damn good babysitter.”
“Steve…” Nancy starts, almost unsure.
And when Steve tells her it’s okay, it feels like it’s about more than just watching Mike. It’s like he’s giving something up. Accepting something. Giving permission. And it should be something that makes him scoff, because Nancy doesn’t need permission to dump Steve, but Jonathan can’t manage to scrounge up the anger.
Steve just sounds resigned and sad, like he’s gotten his heart broken, but accepts that he was never good enough for Nancy. Jonathan turns away before he can hear more. This isn’t meant for his ears to hear.
But despite all that is happening, he can’t stop thinking about it.
He knows it’s stupid, but his brain just keeps replaying the conversation. Keeps pulling up more and more images of Steve from the past year. How he has kept away from the bullies, let Billy walk over him, tried to be normal, let Nancy be normal. How he showed up with Dustin, Lucas and Max, as if they had turned to him for help and he had gone. How he was willing to let Nancy go despite how much it hurts.
None of it fits with what Jonathan has always thought he knew about the guy. However, he remembers how he has always seen a mask, makes him think how well he knows the guy in the first place.
A thought that repeats himself when they get to the hospital later to have Will checked out and find the other kids already there, all of them yelling about Steve. How cool he was. How he saved their lives. How he fought Billy for them. How he’s currently in surgery getting the bits of plate removed from his head.
It all makes his head spin. It makes him feel a bit like the day he returned to school last time they went through this. How the world feels off, everything a shade to the left. The Steve in his head isn’t like this, but he isn’t sure if that Steve still exists. If Steve will snap back to normal again when they get back to school, or if it’s going to stay like this.
He gets his answer a week later. Nancy has been by his side the whole time, but Steve hasn’t returned yet. Jonathan can’t help but feel on edge.
Then, after a week of recovering, Steve pulls into the school’s parking lot. It’s almost like a hush falls over the students, everyone has noticed his absence and the rumors about what has happened between him and Billy fly.
Steve gets out of the car and whispers start up about the bruises still littering his face, but then the other door opens and Dustin of all people gets out of the car, calling: “Thanks for driving me, Steve.”
“Yeah, yeah, just get to class, shithead,” Steve calls back. “And don’t make me wait or you’re walking home.”
Dustin nods, before taking off to school. The whole high school following him with their eyes, the boy oblivious to it. Though, Jonathan knows Steve isn’t, he’s just pretending.
Steve walks to the entrance, holding his head high, like he is still untouchable. Like he cannot see the looks or hear the whispers. He walks right by Billy and gives him a look. Billy looks away and whispers start getting louder. Steve has asserted his dominance there, enough to catch a break, but he isn’t doing anything to stay popular. It’s like he has stopped caring.
That day, he walks up to them during lunch. He doesn’t sit next to Nancy, but next to Jonathan, opposite of Nancy. He just says hello and continues on, like he isn’t feeding the rumor mill for months to come.
Still, Jonathan can’t help but notice he looks more at ease. His smile isn’t picture perfect, but looks more genuine and there is a tenseness missing from his shoulders. Jonathan decides he likes this Steve a lot better than the King Steve he used to know.
After school he watches Steve wait by the car with Dustin, letting himself be convinced to drive him alongside Lucas, Max, Will and Mike to the arcade. And Jonathan knows nothing is going to be the same again, but that might not be so bad in the end.
~~
A/N:
Tbh, I don’t like Jonathan that much, like the moment he took those pictures of Nancy, he was kind of done for me, but he does provide an interesting perspective since he has witnessed the full change and not just ‘re-met’ Steve after he dropped the crown and he’s important to the story, so here I am lol
Post-season 1 to end season 2 Steve is so interesting to me, because it’s clear that people still refer to him as King Steve and he has some sort of reputation from what we hear from Billy, but we know how he’s changing. So, it must be this slow fall of grace so to speak, where his name carries weight, but more like a thing of the past. Idk, I can spend hours thinking about it.
I have Robin’s and Eddie’s POV on the new Steve, no longer King Steve coming as well, so stay tuned for that!
BLACK FRIDAY (3)
Tumblr media
Before the first snowfall of the year, you're having the dream almost every night.
You remember very little of the events in Storage #3. You recall the sweet, searing pain of a light, the soft crunch of desiccated chitin being crushed underfoot, the caustic bite of cleaner filling your nose and lungs. You recall the sensation of a hand pressing on your shoulder. You recall the trembling of your lip as your breath caught in your chest and you waited in absolute silence to hear... what, exactly?
The details have almost completely vanished, swallowed up by a warm, grey void, the existence of which can only be made out in negative space, in the hole it leaves behind.
The dream always starts the same way.
You're standing in a library. Beneath your bare feet you can feel the subtle pressure of the edges and corners of a carefully-laid wood floor. It's a herringbone pattern, one you've only seen in photographs. The wood is stained and lacquered the color of rich wine, or maybe dried blood. Most of the wood in the library is the same, save for the gnarled roots that wind up through shattered tile and embrace the shelves as they climb up, up, up towards the ceiling.
The roots would easily reach the roof if there was one; instead of a surface overhead, the roots and shelves simply continue out of sight, swallowed up by the same featureless mist that obscures everything beyond twenty paces or so.
The shelves themselves are all packed with books of every size, color and shape. So many books that you couldn't catalogue them in a year, a decade, maybe in your lifetime. You want to reach out and pluck one, peruse it, take its knowledge for your own... but you have the overwhelming feeling that none of the bounty here is meant for you. It isn't yours, and the pain of that realization sinks deep into your soul every time you come here.
Something wanders the halls and aisles of the library. It's tall, in the same way that you felt your father was tall when you were barely out of your diapers. There is something there beyond purely physical dimensions, an aching knowledge of significance that sits heavily within your head. You can never make out any features, other than the fact that it is so, so lean and that something elaborate, circular and terrifyingly grand sits behind its head no matter which angle you see it from. You're not permitted to look too hard. Whenever it passes your way your instincts take over and you duck into a corner or behind a shelf and wait, huddled over like a child hiding from the boogeyman. If it notices you, it doesn't seem to care, as every single time it simply slumps past (shf... shf... shf...) and eventually out of sight again.
You know that it is called the Librarian but you don't know how you know.
Eventually, the dream always ends with you standing in front of a volume that has caught your interest. It's almost always a different book. You can read the title sometimes, but rarely recognize the language. You find your arm slowly lifting, your fingers (the same fingers that were burnt before by something by the light by why can't you remember) drifting ever-closer to its spine. You are so hungry.
You awake sitting up in bed, your hand lifted slightly off the covers. For the next few hours, there's a deep emptiness within you that nothing seems to fill.
On New Year's Eve you are closing the Store alone. You're packing up your things in the locker room and about to leave when you notice one of the locker doors is hanging slightly open. You're not sure which co-worker it's assigned to, maybe someone who usually works mornings. You reach out to close it for them when something compels you to take a peek inside.
Within the locker there is only an empty, aging lunchbox with cracked plastic lining and a small book. The book is one of those cheap dollar store notebooks, the ones with the cardboard covers and nylon bands to hold them closed when not in use. This one is a slightly faded teal... or maybe cyan? Scrawled on the cover in streaky permanent marker are two words: "WINTER SIGHTS".
5 Important Facts About Epidural Anesthesia Needles
Tumblr media
A frequent medical method used to reduce pain during delivery, surgery, or severe pain management is epidural anaesthesia. An anaesthetic is injected into the spine's epidural space using this procedure. Needles for epidural anaesthesia are essential equipment for carrying out this treatment in a safe and efficient manner. It is critical for patients and healthcare providers to understand these needles. We'll go over five crucial facts regarding epidural anaesthesia needles in this blog post.
Anatomy of the epidural space:
Before delving into epidural anesthesia needles, it’s important to understand the anatomy of the epidural space. The epidural space is located between the vertebral column and the posterior layer of the spinal cord called the dura mater. Fat, blood vessels, and connective tissue are located in this space. During epidural surgery, a needle is passed through the skin and veins of the back, with the goal of reaching the epidural space. To place the needle accurately in this location to ensure proper anesthesia delivery.
Needle layout and configuration:
Epidural anesthesia needles come in different shapes, but generally have common features. These needles are long, thin, and have blades and tips to facilitate insertion into teeth. They are usually made of durable materials, such as stainless steel, that can withstand penetrating forces. Epidural needles are also available in different dimensions (thickness) and lengths to suit patient anatomy and clinical needs Thinner needles produce less trauma during insertion, but are more likely to bend or break.
Safety Precautions:
Patient safety is paramount in any medical procedure, and epidural anesthesia is no exception. Modern epidural needle are equipped with safety features that reduce the risk of complications during insertion. For example, some needles have a spring-weight mechanism that retracts the tip of the needle once it enters the epidural space, reducing the chances of accidental puncture or nerve injury. These safety features not only enhance patient outcomes but also build confidence among the healthcare professionals performing the surgery.
How to insert needles:
Epidural needle insertion requires precision and skill to ensure accurate placement and proper anesthesia delivery. Generally, health care providers use one of two basic approaches to epidural needle insertion: the central or paramedian approach. In the medial approach, the needle is inserted directly into the midline of the patient's back, aiming to achieve the epidural space between the vertebral spinal processes The paramedian approach places the needle slightly medial from the midline, and times many are guided by physical markers or photographic techniques . Preference may be given based on medical information and provider expertise.
Challenges and risk reduction:
While epidural anesthesia needle is generally considered safe, complications can occur, especially if the needle is not properly placed. Common complications of epidural needle insertion include dural perforation, tissue damage, hematoma formation, and infection. Healthcare professionals can minimize these risks by using strong application techniques, using appropriate segments for needle insertion, and being alert for signs of complications during surgery is and after the procedure Additionally, appropriate patient positioning, informed consent, and thorough preoperative assessment can help to reduce the chances of adverse events.
Epidural anesthesia needles play an important role in providing safe and effective pain relief to patients undergoing labor, surgery, or chronic pain management Epidural space anatomy, needle design and structure, safety features, techniques insertion procedures, and potential complications for those involved in the process Understanding the health of epidural procedures Important for service professionals By prioritizing patient safety, following best practices, and advances in needle technology, healthcare professionals can improve outcomes and enhance the overall patient experience.
Climate stories: what about a tragic photograph?
The faces of people in newspapers sometimes disturb me. Let me explain. I have talked to people that want their stories told or don’t really care whether their likeness is available to the world, but I also know from my own experience that I do not want my family's fresh wounds aired out for the world to see. When we use people’s faces to humanize a climate disaster, at what point are we dehumanizing those whose stories are being told? As a family stands on the rubble of their life-long home, destroyed by a hurricane, flood, tornado, fire, you get to look into their eyes from the other side of your screen and scroll through. I don’t have an answer for this. Climate stories need to be told, but why? For readers to understand the impacts of climate change, as climate disasters worsen all over the world but especially for vulnerable populations. For outside observers of these disasters to understand their role, and the role of the powerful and wealthy, in exacerbating climate change. Maybe these stories and these faces can reach someone out there that can make a statistically significant difference in the effects of our human actions. These stories are told to a curious or bored or skeptical audience, and then what? What am I or you or anyone reading going to do about it? Why is their pain and suffering available to me, why is it for sale and on exhibit? Whose pockets do the profits from the exposure of this suffering reach?
Let people tell their own stories. Most importantly, listen to those communities that have already been facing the impacts of climate change before it’s too late. Listen to them before disaster occurs, so communities can have more resources available earlier on as they search for and work towards solutions.
Heather McTeer Toney speaks specifically to the experiences of black women in the South (the southern USA), highlighting how community efforts and ancestral knowledge have been a powerful tool for collective action, and how these efforts are starting to overcome the tokenized use of black voices in climate tragedy media.
An excerpt from McTeer Toney’s exposé Collards Are Just as Good as Kale featured in All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis below expands, touches on, and adds dimension to the key points discussed above:
“Despite hearing the Republican rhetoric of “climate change ain’t real,” people knew that something more than a rising river was changing and amiss. The river waters were coming faster and stronger from the increased snow up north. (Heavier wintertime precipitation is yet another outcome of rising global temperatures.) Each time Chicago, Minneapolis, and other midwestern cities got strong winter storms, the snow melted into streams that eventually made their way to the Mississippi Delta. Deer and duck seasons weren’t the same as in years past. Cotton and soybean crop yields were different. Increased heat, droughts, and floods meant more pests. Meanwhile, it felt like no one was listening to the voices of the poor, of rural folks, of southerners.
[...]We live in pollution, play around it, work for it, and pray against it. Hell, we even sing about it. Black women are everyday environmentalists; we are climate leaders. We just don’t get the headlines too often. Rarely do we see or hear Black voices as part of national conversation about climate policy, the green economy, or clean energy - even though 57 percent of Black Americans are concerned or alarmed about climate change, compared to 49 percent of White folks. We’re relegated to providing an official comment on environmental justice issues like the water crisis in Flint, or we’re the faces in the photos when candidates need to show they’re inclusive. Fortunately, this is slowly changing as more and more women of color step loudly up to the table and make their expertise known in climate justice and culturally competent, solution-based thinking.”
What are your thoughts? Let's continue the conversation.
The Importance of Dental X-Rays
Tumblr media
The Importance of Dental X-Rays
X-rays are a tool your dentist uses to detect and diagnose cavities and other dental problems. They are also used to identify infections and determine how well your teeth and gums function.
Diagnostic purposes
X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool for dentists to see cavities and other problems in the teeth and gums. They can help prevent unnecessary pain and discomfort and save lives. There are several different types of x-rays, each with its purpose.
Dental x-rays are usually taken in a dark room. They are made using photographic film and are exposed to radiation for a short period. The image is then sent directly to a computer to be analyzed. Globus dentists may use them to detect bone diseases, orthodontic misalignment, and injuries.
Dental x-rays can also be used to detect early cavities. Using radiography, however, cannot measure these cavities. If the holes are not treated, they can get larger and cause more damage. Globus dentists can also fill them with anaerobic bacteria.
Dental x-rays are also used to monitor orthodontic treatment. They can determine the amount of space available for teeth in the mouth and the position of the teeth. Globus dentists can also use them to detect jaw issues and masses.
Detect decay
Dentists use X-rays to detect decay and other dental problems. X-rays are used to determine how much pollution is present, as well as how far the rot has progressed. The dentist will then discuss the treatment options with you.
Dental x-rays can also look for cysts and abscesses. X-rays can also reveal bone loss in the jaw. This can be caused by several conditions, including Sjogren's syndrome. The sooner a problem is detected, the less expensive it will be to treat.
The American Dental Association recommends dental x-rays be taken at least once a year. This will help your dentist determine whether or not a tooth is impacted or has any bone loss around it.
In addition to detecting decay, X-rays can also reveal bone changes caused by infection. This is important because if a tooth has an irreversible cavity, the dentist may need to remove the tooth and perform a root canal.
Diagnose dental infections
X-rays are an essential tool for dentists to diagnose dental infections. However, they are only necessary for some patients. Depending on your risk of developing a dental problem, you may only need to get x-rays once or twice a year.
The most common use of X-rays is to identify cavities. These X-rays allow your dentist to examine the root structures and other parts of your mouth that you cannot see. They will also check for abnormalities in the soft tissues surrounding your teeth.
X-rays may also be used to check the condition of your dental fillings. If the packing is damaged or missing, your dentist may recommend getting a new one. It's also possible for your dentist to identify problems in your jaw or bone.
X-rays are also used to detect periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can lead to the development of dental abscesses. Dental abscesses are small, localized collections of suppurative material.
Dental abscesses can cause serious life-threatening complications if left untreated. Early blemishes can leave a dark shadow or a draining "blister" next to the tooth. The X-ray may also reveal the source of the infection.
Find problems beyond the teeth and gums.
X-rays can help your dentist find problems beyond teeth and gums. They can also tell your dentist what's going on with your jawbone. Some diseases can cause changes in the jawbone, which can lead to problems with the teeth.
X-rays can also show changes over time. Globus dentist may recommend getting new X-rays every year or two. You may also need them if you haven't had a dental checkup. You should also tell your dentist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. During these times, you may need more X-rays than usual to keep track of changes in your bone.
X-rays show the full dimensions of your teeth. There are three types of x-rays. These include bitewing, occlusal, and periapical x-rays. Each type shows different aspects of your teeth. X-rays can help your dentist diagnose problems and plan treatment. They can also save you from discomfort and pain.
X-rays may show problems like cavities, abnormalities, or teeth that are out of place. Some dentists recommend X-rays every six months. If you have fillings, you should check for decay underneath them.
