ah yes, the sweet sting of rejection from a billion dollar corporation who believes that "action stories don't appeal to romance audiences", welcome back my old familiar friend

oh so first burying oneself under the other’s covers only to emerge asking about shoelaces, then watching the other in their sleep and later flopping on the other’s matress cursing in frustration of unsolved case, but asking deep personal questions about the other’s past and laughing together a while after?
and now waking the other up in the morning with a cup of tea? oh okay sure
what, maybe you’ve even sat on the edge of sherlock’s bed with that tea, john, and looked at him light-heartedly as he was pretending to sleep despite your talking, early sunlight probably splayed on his face and shining warmly on his disheveled hair or whatever? yeah of course why wouldn’t you perform this perfectly platonic activity, just warn me when I should give you both some privacy so that you can present him with a morning kiss alright

There were fourteen fear entities.
That was it.
Maybe there would be more at some point. Maybe there were more a long time ago and some just faded. Maybe there were more right now.
But they were always, always about fear.
It had been the first thing Carlos had asked upon hearing about the beings that were now a constant in his life. The beings that had taken away so many of his assistants already (at this point it was a small blessing his surviving assistants didn’t hate him), that had changed who he was in such a complex level that he couldn't stop questioning if he was still human or if they had fundamentally changed him in an irreversible terrible way, doomed him to spend eternity living of nightmares.
He had studyied them. Learned all he could about the entities. Thought of all ill-concieved ways to end it all and found no perfectly satisfactory solution. He knew them more than he knew most things and he was a scientist even if no one called him that anymore and a scientist knows many things.
That's to say: fear was the common denominator. There were no beings of hope or love or happiness or … community.   Fear was the primordial thing. And it made less sense than he wanted but it was how the world operated, it had always been, that meant that the Voice had to be about fear somehow. That if it was even a thing.
But Carlos was a scientist once. Was a scientist still deep down. Before and after everything. And a scientist cannot simply disregard evidence to fit his previously well established theories. He knew the Voice was real. He had proof. And now he needed to test all hypotheses, and had already called Nilanjana and Mark to try to figure this out.
The Voice was new and it was real.
It was new and real and strong enough to have its own avatar.
And they needed to figure out what fear it represented soon, before it got stronger, before it was too late (and preferentially before Carlos was completely and foolishly in love with one fresh new avatar called Cecil Palmer that asked too many questions and was too sincere with his answers even without any eye powers involved and had the cutest smile ever) and to do that Carlos needed to shut down the small voice in his head saying this wasn’t about fear.
Community.
As if.

Listen. I have always been a dino kid at heart. I fucking love dinosaurs.
> so I was listening to a dino podcast and they interviewed the author of some dinosaur shapeshifter series.
> I’m like. This sounds ridiculous but I need to see if it’s on my library app.
> got the audiobook which is read by Kirt Graves who does a bunch of excellent MM romance audiobook readings
> just listened to the entire first book of the 5 book series and I honestly fucking loved it. It was like listening to a fanfiction trope romance novel but also with dinosaur animorphs.
> fucking in love with the main two characters.. went onto ao3 and there’s only 1 fic for the entire series / fandom
> I’m about to make it my problem to make more works for this because jesussususjs is the switch / teasing energy strong with these boys
> the series is called RELIC by Maz Maddox and the first book is called Smash & Grab

> for more good dinosaur related recommendations hit me up 😝

I don't think I'll stop going feral at the absolute disrespect towards Cecil/Welcome to Night Vale when it had a canon gay character (as well as other lgbt rep, that just kept expanding) and started BEFORE GAY MARRIAGE WAS FEDERALLY LEGAL IN THE US
nothing will ever compare to the absolute draw drop moment of having cecil openly be attracted to a man and have the joke be cecil being AWKWARD and not the attraction itself, when I was in fucking high school and not mentally stable and not straight with being gay not even being legally recognized in my state
(plus the multiple eyes and sharp teeth and tentacles he's usually drawn with is CLASSIC tumblr sexyman, he HAS no canon appearance we all just collectively Did That)

i still keep getting recommended posts about the james somerton debacle (unsurprising) and i swear to god, at this point i've spent more time trying to remember what my reaction was to watching his yoi video a while back while half-sleep deprived or smth than i a) spent watching the video and b) spent thinking about any other creator i watched one mid video from and ignored after
#at least i remember specifically deciding that blaire trianglehead was too slow paced and dull to keep listening to after about 3 vids#but also the subjects were really... ghoulish borderline true crime like the leggings scam vid that was 1/3 botched surgery talk#at least in my memory. and her dispassionately talking about it rather than sticking to the subject at hand and having little opinion#put me right off my lunch and i was done#somerton was allll up in my recs just before the bomb dropped and i was half keeping an eye out for a new vid about a subject i cared about#but it was literally all stuff i'm sick to death of. didn't want to hear about evil gays or vampires or if barbie is camp#it was all very... stuff i was already tired of seeing on tumblr and i didn't think i'd get anything new out of#but i was still keeping him in mind because i thought he was a type of person that had little presence in the video essay scene#lol in retrospect#but i do actually try to keep an eye out for creators with different backgrounds. esp black creators. and accept that i might disagree a bi#or find parts of their perspective a little uncomfortable or off-putting. so i probably would have forgiven some of the misogyny tbh#not that it's something that like. idk i should do to punish myself. it's not like there isn't a lot of microaggressions from women#but the fact that it was proven that so many of those were trumped up for show was. honestly a huge betrayal?#people are genuinely cruel to marginalized creators and pretending that it's worse than it is and flopping for sympathy is so galling#it's really easy to be like 'oh i would have never been taken in' just because there was already something keeping me at arms length#but i know that isn't true. i'm a freakin easy mark! you don't even want to know how many podcast/youtube sponsorships i've tried#and also sometimes i find something initially off-putting about a youtuber and later get into them more and find them charming#i genuinely don't think that i have unimpeachable first impressions and sometimes i test them later to see if they still hold

nobody ever gets the mugshot of gluttony right. these days you think it has nothing to do with bodyweight. what a good trick: that gluttony could take a shape. no, there was never any fault in finishing a meal or in taking second helpings. it was always in taking from others that there was an issue - the oil baron's fingers steepled over dead bodies and stolen lands. gluttony - twin of greed, although most think greed and envy are the siblings - gluttony is pleased with the experience of gaining, is thrilled just-by-having. greed is the one that stays hungry, that has to move forever like a shark. gluttony likes it - "a glutton for punishment" is one who is seeking the harm, who loves the rush.
gluttony is a mother using her daughter's body for a diet testing ground, sharpening the bone angles. gluttony is saying why, well not! to the seventh and eighth mansion or yacht. it is not just wanting the six white horses, it is making sure that the horses came from your stables. it is not just bathing in milk - it is bathing in milk while others are starving.
oh, it's true that some sins still blaze in their bright floral prints. wrath in a white woman yelling at a person of color for even daring to be in her neighborhood. the red, incipient rage of a neck tightened at even the thought we would take the guns away. wrath has laurels, and she is good at her job, and works hard.
but sloth wasn't ever the sleepy morning of depression, the hours spent begging a clouded body to please move goddamn it; the protestant work ethic claiming even rest is somehow demonic. it was never chronic fatigue. sloth was subtle, a grey mist. she is watching you get bullied and she is deciding it is none of her business. she crosses the picket line because - what! it's just chicken, isn't it? she is closing her eyes and turning her head when the next anti-gay legislation passes. someone else will handle it. not the tense freeze of anxiety or a lack of preparation - she knows you're hurting and would rather you stay quiet about it. she tells other people i just don't see what the big deal is.
sloth is a father that doesn't do the dishes. sloth is your boyfriend's innocent shrug you're just better at household shit. sloth isn't the missed opportunity - it is the purposeful desire to just get-someone-else-to-do-it.
greed and envy are doing body shots in the back of a private jet. they are the way they always have been, but are lovers in the age of the internet. greed just finished union busting, is rolling a bitcoin over his knuckles, is about to start another MLM. envy is in a broadbrimmed hat, showing off her instagram life, grinning about how if you want it, work for it.
okay, it's true. you have a soft spot for lust, gathering dust in a corner. so tame in comparison to the others. but how funny lust is always painted as being a woman in tight clothes. you've met actually lustful women - the ones that purposefully climb into your partner's lap, the ones that say lesbians are gross but ask bisexual women into bed with their husbands. a lustful woman is not donned in lace and garters and red: that's how men think lust looks, painting their own sins into frame. this way, the sin displaces as fog and hovers above her: a woman in a dress is lust; what the man experiences is just the natural consequence.
here is the thing: lust is doing just fine, save your pity. lust is running more circles than any of them. lust is shutting down safe sexwork sites while also making teenagers in knee-high socks sex sensations. lust is CEO of an advertising network where women never pass 25 years old. all the bras lust makes are pretty to look at but, when worn, legitimately hurt. lust has a podcast, his fur coat looped around his shoulders, sells the idea that only certain people have value, that sex raises some and destroys others. lust is tilting his head and asking what did you expect when you dress like that? lust shuns you, sneers that everything you want is disgusting and taboo - right until he can figure out how to capitalize off of it. lust has the midas ability: everything he touches becomes an object.
people usually say wrath is the scary one. you agree with FMA here, though: the real dangerous one is pride, and the shit-eating grin. the white cloaks and the nationalism and the inability to apologize. it is every partner who threw a book at your head because you don't respect him. it is every mother who said my son doesn't deserve to have his life ruined over allegations. it is the teacher that fails you because you talked back.
you worry you have this one. you feel guilty when you need help but don't ask for it. prideful. ashamed when you complete something and feel good about it. too proud for your own good. but pride is not the reward of hard work or accomplishment: pride is a twitter feed. it is the thing that has to mask i didn't do anything with look at me.
pride is your father's raised hand, his raised voice. how he was never there when you needed him, but he is still "head of house." he ruins dinner and blames it on you: you're an embarrassment to this family. this is the glass you walk around, the cuts in your feet. how he says this isn't how i raised you and you have to bite back the retort: that's because you didn't actually fucking raise me.

Being a fan of both night vale and tma/tmagp right now is so funny because you listen to one gay eye podcast and it's like here's an utterly beautiful exploration of familial relationships, forgiveness, and the inability to fully understand and heal from familial trauma and then you listen to the other gay eye podcast and it's like here's a fucked up Mr blobby who goes to strip clubs and rips people apart and then eats them. Truly fascinating to witness.
