IMAGINE Satoru and Suguru as fucking YouTubers, circa 2014-2018.

Ohmygod they would be SO entertaining, I swear. This AU lives in my head rent-free at the moment, so let me word-vomit about it.

It all started with Satoru... Things like this, of course it starts with Satoru.

Satoru gives me storytime YouTuber vibes. His channel started out that way. It's just him talking about how crazy his life is. But after he amassed a following, around 100K, he eventually became a variety sort of YouTuber.

Satoru does a LOT. His channel is INSANE. From food challenges, to trying weird food on camera, to going to haunted locations, to putting weird stuff in the microwave to see what will happen (his house is permanently in danger), to failed cooking videos, right down to trying random products he finds in online stores.

Trust me, it doesn't take him long to get to 10 Million subscribers. Probably 10 months or less. That face card ain't declining and he's always going to pull people left and right.

In the beginning, a lot of Satoru's traffic came from Instagram. It's just him looking so aesthetically pleasing, he's irresistible. His Twitter is a mess. Twitter is where he shitposts, and people know better than to take him seriously on Twitter. His Snapchat... Good lord, help the poor soul who's following him on there. It's random shenanigans that would have you questioning if Gojo is okay.

For the first two years of his YouTube career, Satoru has been doing this YouTuber thing solo.

And then his best friend, Suguru Geto, made his debut on his channel and it's OVER.

His fans fell in love with Suguru. Of course, they would. Tell me you wouldn't love him? (in an AU where Suguru is innocent and has never attempted to commit crimes against humanity).

Also, Suguru is deadass charming when he wants to be.

Satoru and Suguru = iconic comedic duo.

Satoru's views and engagement skyrocketed from the moment Suguru was introduced to his YT audience.

At first, Suguru kept all his social media accounts private, and Satoru was always careful and mindful about what appeared on camera.

Eventually, Satoru influenced Suguru to start his own YT channel.

Suguru Geto strikes me as the type who would have a niche YT channel. Like, he targets a specific audience. The opposite of Gojo's chaotic variety channel.

I kind of find it hard to pin down what sort of content Suguru would upload, but I'm leaning toward day-in-the-life vlogs, fitness, travel vlogs, and commentaries.

If you want serious, educational, aesthetic, and calm content, head over to Suguru's channel.

If you want unhinged shenanigans and pure chaos, Satoru Gojo is your guy.

"Well, it's whatever!" Satoru laughed, side-eyeing the messy slop on the countertop that he'd had the audacity to call a donut cake before the entire video devolved into him and Suguru flinging globs of cream cheese and chocolate frosting at each other across the kitchen.

"Who is going to finish all this?" Suguru lamented, eyes narrowing at the pile of food on Satoru's marble counters.

"What are you talking about? We're eating that!"

"Oh fuck no!"

"Yes!"

"No, Satoru."

"Yeeeesss!" Satoru cackled and flung an arm around Suguru's shoulders, bringing his friend into the frame for the special announcement he'd teased at the beginning of this video. "Now come here, it's time to tell them our surprise."

"Our surprise?"

Satoru laughed. "Well, your surprise, but you did this thanks to me~ You're welcome, by the way."

Releasing a deep sigh at the sound of Satoru crooning into his ear, Suguru shook his head. Satoru was more excited about the announcement than Suguru himself would ever be.

"Are you telling them?" Satoru asked, blinking at Suguru over the rims of his dark Versace sunglasses.

"Nah, you do it."

"Everyone, Suguru finally has a YouTube channel!" Satoru announced gleefully, the widest grin splitting his face as he wrestled Suguru into a headlock. A headlock that the latter had no problem prying himself away from. "After a whole year trying to convince his stubborn ass! And the first video is already up right?"

"Two videos, but yeah, they should go check it out if they want." Suguru nodded, flashing an easy smile at the camera, and towards millions of Satoru's lovestruck fans.

"Two! He's fast! Go check it out, guys. Suguru's channel is in the description below. It's the first one there. If you guys need something to help you relax or--"

"--To cleanse your palette after this madness."

"Hey! Rude! They love my cake videos!"

"That's not cake, Satoru."

Neither of them acknowledged the sloppy pile of donuts coated in multi-colored frosting, teetering on the brink of collapse in the background.

"But yeah! Suguru's channel is up right now. First two videos, go check it out! Subscribe, show him some love, give it a like. We had fun hangin' with you, we hope you had fun hangin' with us. And I'll see you guys tomorrow!"

11. Link your three favorite fics right now

idk if these are favourites, but these are three fics i recently read for the first time and really enjoyed:

the triumph of magic by miniequill (odainath) (harry/hermione ; <5k ; AU) After Ron abandons them, Harry and Hermione take on the challenge of finding and destroying the Horcruxes. HHr.

i often feel like i have this strange parasocial relationship with odainath (although we've never talked) because they have been in literally every fandom i have been in at some point or other (including the most niche ones) and they are an incredible writer. i was super stoked to find out they had HP fics as well, and of course you know that i'm a sucker for a good harry/hermione story. i found this one very intriguing - the writing is gorgeous as always, and i was very much vibing this.

perpendicular by akissinacrisis (it's tagged hinny but i'd say gen ; <5k ; AU) Tom props himself up on his elbow. ‘So, let me get this straight: you’re falling in love with a posh redhead from boarding school who doesn’t own a telephone.’ AU: Harry Potter, member of Stonewall High’s sixth form, meets a pretty redhead at a party. Harry/Ginny, rated Teen+, oneshot.

this is a very interesting squib!harry take unlike anything i've ever seen before. the writing in this was absolutely stellar - i laughed at times, but was also taken by the overall gorgeous heartbreak of this. it's funny, although i totally respect how the author ended it (and understand why they end it that way), it's one of those where i almost wish it could have gone on longer/explored the alternative ending. it would have been a very different (and probably much longer fic) but i would love to see someone write it.

orchards by @whinlatter (hinny ; <20k ; CC) The orchard is a wild, thousand-flower, crumpled-gate, fall-down-fence sort of place, where things grow that you’ve never asked for, that you’d never expect. The summer of ’96, the story of something flowery he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow. Canon-compliant, oneshot, summer between OotP and HBP. Non-linear narrative, flashbacks/flash-forwards to DH. Harry/Ginny.

if you gravitate anywhere close to the hinny fandom, you will know that everyone and their cousin has been recommending this fic since it came out - let me tell you: everyone and their cousin are right. it took me a while to get to it but this is one of the most beautiful hinny one-shots out there. the writing is stellar - i left a comment to whinlatter after i read it that went over the AO3 character-count limit and was completely unhinged, and i am not sorry. if you haven't already, go read this. please and thank you.

14. how do you write emotional scenes? Do you ever feel what the characters feel? Do you draw from personal experiences?

you'd love it, right? if i could give you a formula.

as european as i am (please don't ever give us compliments, we don't know how to deal), i also think it would be highly hypocritical of me to sit here and be like "ohmygod, idk, i'm so shocked you'd ask me that!' i've been writing for seventeen years and if there is one thing that has always been consistent in my comment section from the very beginning is the fact that i seem to be able to make people feel things. there are writers who are incredibly good with words. gorgeous, gorgeous prose that reads like poetry. there are writers who are good with descriptions, scenery so vivid you can almost touch it. there are yet others who are good at giving you a feel for a time period in your life, describing childhood or adolescence or moving out of home for the first time. what i am good at, is this. the rawness and the gripping emotion that makes you forget how to breathe. i know some of it is healing for some people, too.

i don't think there's a formula for this. it's even harder for me to break it down especially because it's not something i've ever had to work on - i've always had it. ask me how i work on descriptions (which are very much not my forte), and i'll much more concrete advice to give you.

Do you draw from personal experiences? no, not really. i mean, i'm sure i do on some subconscious level, but i very rarely am like "oh, i felt this at x moment in my life, let me channel that". i've never studied psychology either, or done much research on how people react to certain things. for me, it's a gut feeling. it's a raw, instinctive understanding of people, and the human experience as a species. i don't pretend to have any formal expertise on this. i follow my gut, that's it. and, if you ask me: Do you ever feel what the characters feel? no, but i do feel something.

when i write something that works (emotionally works) i get this sense of indescribable peace in me. and this is true for moments that carry very dramatic emotions (think chapter 8 of castles) but also happy moments, like the roadtrip in chapter 16. for me, as a writer, these are exactly the same, in terms of how i feel when i'm writing them. and how i feel is like: nothing in the world exists anymore. i have no job, no family, no friends, no boy trouble, no concerns, no nothing. you know how, in chapter 16, the narration says: "he smiles like no one has ever died"? - yeah, that.

hours of just me and the words on the page. it's hard to put into words without sounding cheesy but i feel this sense of calm alignment with the universe. i'm not one for drugs but i think it's probably what a high feels like. have you ever been able to just empty your head? where you're in complete control and the chaos of the world cannot touch you? that, too.

and, generally, if i feel that, i know i'm onto something. i know that whatever i'm writing is working. generally, in that "state", hours can go by and i won't realise it. i'm writing, writing, writing and suddenly it's like - 5AM the next day. if i don't, that's when i'm like "shit, something's not working," and i have to work and work and rewrite and rewrite until i find a solution. until i feel that. so, while there's no formula i follow, i do get that writing "high" that sends me into the right direction.

and, for the record, that "high" is the only reason i write. like, sure, comments and feedback and the community are amazing and idk if would write *as much* as i do without them. i also 100% seek attention and validation, but i think if there wasn't also this sense of peace in me that came with it, i would probably find community in a different way. but, you know, i'm a bit of a drug addict. i'm sure if someone told you there is one thing that will bring you more peace, joy and sense of accomplishment than anything else in your life and sure you have to work for it, a lot, but once you're done, it'll be the highest, high you've ever been on, you'd sign up, too.

to me, writing (and this happens particularly in those emotional scenes you are referring to), is the absence of fear. it's the absence of anxiety. it's the absence of depression. it's the absence of worry. it's just pure calm and happiness. it may not be all those things for you as a reader (especially if i'm writing something tense lol), but it is for me. i don't think what i feel as a writer and what you feel as a reader are related, but they're definitely linked. and, when i feel one, i know you will feel the other.

and that maybe people will understand and benefit from what i am trying to say.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

WOW SO i was going to say "significance because i fell down the stairs while writing it, had to take a break to recover from a minor head injury, came back to its weeks (months?) later, and somehow still finished it despite being Real Bad at continuing things i take a break from so am very proud of myself for that" HOWEVER i looked and realized i finished it in 2022?? so i guess that's out for this year's wrapped and woag time sure does fly lol

i feel like the next obvious answer is pride, my ichisama tokyo ghoul fusion, but i don't want to pick it just because it's long. i did enjoy writing it and am more or less happy(ish) with how it came out, though i think a lot of my pride in it (no pun intended) does come from the fact that it was longer than what i usually manage to finish

ANYWAY... i actually think i'm going to go with stay gold! my one and only revenger fic lol

i wrote it in a fit of disappointment over the show's actual ending, but wound up actually really liking it... i think? (still feels difficult to say this about my own writing but i am! practicing!! the self-esteem thing!!!)

there are a bunch of details i managed to include that just make me happy (like the... name thing which i will probably make a separate post about in a minute here because OHMYGOD i want to talk about it again SO BAD and this is as good an excuse as any)

so yeah tl;dr i'm still very happy with stay gold :3

27. What do you listen to while writing?

tragically in recent years i have become the type that needs silence to write, i am just Bad at concentrating with music on even though i would love to listen to something when i write orz

so the answer is currently i listen to nothing while writing, but since that is a very uninteresting answer, i will say that in the past i did listen to godspeed you! black emperor quite a lot for background noise during writing sessions!

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

IT'S GOTTA BE [REDACTED] AU BUT I CAN'T TALK ABOUT IT YET FOR FEAR OF SCARING IT AWAY LOL the biggest surprise part is how like... 15k of it came spilling out in, what, like 3 days or so?

alas i have stalled on it since then, but i still am very attached to the idea of it i think... so hopefully i will be able to get it done at some point! it is going to be one of those strange niche aus that appeals probably only to me BUT i'm surprisingly in love with the idea and hope to get going on it again soon

(becoming the deer mutual for love tapped was also a wonderful surprise!)

i've started watching merlin recently then discovered your writing and i am OBSESSED. i have a small self indulgent thing to ask of you: do you have more of the very specific niche of merlin getting stabbed through with a sword/dagger/whatever but being completely fine, much to the shock of arthur+the knights who didn't realize how powerful merlin actually is? i read the five part-er where merlin yells at arthur in the forest and the one where he laughs about it and kills the mercs with vines while saying "i can't believe you think you get to kill me" but are there any others you can link me to? i LOVE immortal merlin shrugging off mortal wounds while arthur and the knights stand in the background like "OHMYGOD?!?!?!?!?!?" i'll take whatever you have for me, your writing, your friend's writing, someone random's writing, just anything of merlin shrugging off getting stabbed. love your work and hope your day is wonderful!! 💖💖💖💖

My GOD I love that trope!! I love when he's a badass, I love love love it!! When he gets injured, mortally or otherwise as long as it's bloody, and he just... deals with it. Whether it's with a smile on his face or just an annoyed tick of the mouth before he gets on with things... I love it.

So, in terms of fics (other than Scary!Merlin, and Angry Magic Reveal) that have this trope.... I don't really have any. I've got PLENTY that have Merlin being injured and just sort of... shrugging it off, but I don't think I've got many/ant others where he shrugs off a mortal wound.

These are the closest I can find on my Masterlist:

7 Times Merlin is in Physician Mode, in the +1 Merlin has an arrow in his shoulder, and is trying to deal with it best he can whilst the others freak out. Though there's no bamf or angry Merlin, he's just kind of annoyed at the others making a fuss of nothing? (Around 8k)

A God in the Throne Room?, Ok, so he doesn't get stabbed, but he does get tied up. When he gets angry with the conversation he effortlessly breaks himself free, and turns into this... terrifying God, who has his “How dare you call my name?” moment, which is very satisfying and chilling. The others almost piss themselves. (4.8k)

Fae!Merlin, Similar to above in that he doesn't get hurt, but he suddenly reveals himself in a rather terrifying way. (8.1k)

Merlin is a badass, Merlin is generally kickass through this whole series, but in the third and final part he does get stabbed in the shoulder, which annoys him more than it hurts him, and he stitches up the wound and begins torturing the man who threw the dagger whilst the others watch on in mild horror (three parts, totalling around 22kish)

The Guard Dog, Merlin is in an underground fighting ring, and the others sneak in only to see him kick ass. This is more crack-y than it is serious, and there's no magic or near death or blood. It's basically the crack-y version of this trope, whilst still having Merlin being a bamf. (6.5k)

Now for fics off my Rec List:

Crossing the Line, Merlin's anger in this is definitely more of a crack-y anger. A whole bunch of sorcerers attack Camelot, and Merlin repeatedly has the shit beaten out of him before he goes "fuck it" and reveals his magic in front of Arthur. It's pretty funny, but Merlin is also very badass. I really love this one lol (4.1k).

no. Just…..no, Merlin's magic is discovered, Uther repeatedly orders his execution, and whilst Merlin avoids it best he can, sometimes people sneak up on him. Every time he dies he just wakes up again, rolls his eyes at Uther, and continues to serve a very baffled Arthur (7.6k)

A Considerable Headstart, Merlin sneaks away to deal with a troublesome visiting Lord, the others follow him. They see him fight, and win, against said Lord, but not without receiving an injury. A Druid comes along and helps stitch him up, and Merlin just spends the entire time kind of exhausted and annoyed and resigned. The conversation between the Lord and Merlin before the fight is probably more interesting and bamfy than the fight and the aftermath (14k).

Is This the Best You Can Do?, probably the CLOSEST to the trope on this list, a set of two fics in which Merlin, without his magic, shows off how bamfy he is whilst the knights watch on, baffled. In one he gets tortured and then kicks ass and breaks everyone out, in the other, he gets poisoned, it doesn't work, and he kicks ass and breaks everyone out (6k and 2k)

Hide Your Scars, Merlin's scars are revealed to the knights one by one, and they help him with his secret kick ass life. He accumulates a multitude of horrifying scars and injuries that he's just resigned to, but he still has to hide from Arthur (the only one who, by the end, doesn't know about his magic before all is revealed) (12k).

None of these are exactly like this trope, bar Is This the Best You Can Do?, but they're all pretty close. If you're looking for others, I'd suggest taking a browse through my Rec List. All of them are on AO3, all of them have a rough word count and a description so you don't waste time on ones that aren't your sort of thing! There's a real mix of pairings, length, and trope on there :D

THE LAST DRAGON CHRONICLES bro omfg that series was CRAZY ohmhgod... I found it randomly bc the cover had a dragon on it and I was obsessed with dragons at the time but brooo I really enjoyed it :D haven't read it since I was a kid though... Like it's been over 10 years omfg

UHMMM what else hm... There was this one book I read that was like... Fairy tails but with a twist ending. I don't remember a lot of the details but a lot of times like the main character would secretly be a jerk and or like the ending wouldn't necessarily be happy... I'll try to find it tomorrow and show it, I remember it being silly and really enjoying it

And now... this isn't a kids book (well it's YA) but ohmygod IVE LITERALLY RECOMMENDED THIS BOOK TO AT LEAST FIVE DIFFERENT PEOPLE OVER THE YEARS AND EVERY TIME THE PERSON IS LIKE omg I'll check it out!! AND EVERYTIME THEY FORGET AND I AM LEFT IN THIS FANDOM WHERE THERE LITERALLY IS NOT A SINGLE SOUL WHO HAS READ THIS BOOK LIKE I GENUINELY THINK I AM DESTINED TO BE THE ONLY PERSON ON EARTH TO READ THIS TRILOGY LIKE WHATEHFJVIKKKK

It's the Age of Legends trilogy, with the first book titled Sea of Shadows by Kelly Armstrong!! I reallyyyy liked it as a kid like it was my fav book forever and well it still is but I haven't read it in like 6 years so shfkdks but it's super cool the world building is epic and I love the elements of horror that is sprinkled in.

It's really really good I super recommend sobsosbsosbssobs

Okay okay talking about my favorite film. I don’t think I have like a niche movie taste at all but I’m okay with that.

My favorite favorite movie is Forrest Gump. I just- i love it so so so much. I watched it with my parents the first time when I was a child (I think I was around ten but I might have been a bit older) and then we started to watch it every year, so it became like a tradition so maybe that’s a part of it. Honestly we don’t do it anymore but I’m glad they got me into it (they also literally plotted and waited for the appropriate age they could show me rocky horror picture show and blues brothers so that’s them).

I’ve seen it with so many of my friends and I honestly get like so upset when someone misunderstands Forrest (like I had a friend and she just spend the whole film complaining about how stupid he is which is just a stupid critique and also tone deaf but okay). Anyways, I don’t think there will be a single time that I watch this movie without crying (the „is he smart? Or is he like me?“ will make me sob every single time without fail) and I just- I can’t describe this. I watch it less then I’ve watched other movies (that I’ve fixated on for example, but it’s like a constant and I always come back to it), I do watch it at least once a year.

So yeah, that was a ramble. I don’t know if you meant it like that but okay. If you haven’t seen it (I think most people have but idk) you should. And if you hate it, I’m going to cry.

I’ve just rewatched into the spider verse recently because the new one is coming out soon and it’s just. So special. I am so grateful this film exist. Like the graphics??? OhmyGod!! I fucking hope those animators got paid because they deserve all the money for creating this work of fucking art.

I’ve also been getting the urge to rewatch this film called Short Term 12 which is about this short term group home for kids and teens, it’s a very intense film, a lot of mental health and SA content warnings

my mum was a social worker and she ran places like this, but she stopped when I was born because it is a very draining and sometimes dangerous job. It helps me kinda understand what she did with her life before me though, which is really cool.

I’m in the middle of reading your story “oh, you kissed me just to kiss me” and your writing it just, ohmygod!! Like, I don’t think any of your stories are bad or boring, far from it, but this one?? THIS ONE ohmygod😭😭!! and “rest in the belly of the wolf”!! That got me through the last couple of months❤️❤️

I want to write my own stories but I always get distracted or bored in the middle of writing. Do you have any tips for this? And if not, that’s fine, I just want you to know your writing is beautiful❤️‍🔥

AHH, I am so glad that you like my skz ace/sex worker AU! It was definitely my little project fic for a long time, as I was just savouring it to post in one whole bit. I thought it might be a bit niche with how it was formatted and having asexuality be at the very heart of the fic and so important for how the two of them fell in love. The fact that so many people have resonated with it (it's my most kudos'd fic, wow) is incredibly rewarding and validating. It makes my little aspec heart fucking soar.

And I'm glad you like the wolfpack AU too! That one grew legs and started running away with me, but man, it has been so fun to write and also tackling how Minho fit in with all of the boys and his poly partners along the way. Also I'm just a sucker for magical realms and it's been so fun to expand on a magical world I made on a whim for one vmon fic years ago.

I'm not sure if I'm much good at advice, because everyone is different and the best you can do is figuring out what works for you. I think if you struggle particularly with getting distracted or bored, I'd try to focus on writing the parts of the story that really made you excited. Like for most story ideas, you might have a spark or an idea for a scene that made you want to write in the first place. For now, and while you're building your habit, carve away everything you consider "boring", so you don't get bogged down with it.

Get to the meat of what makes you excited, and if you can, try to keep it contained to not get too long. It'll feel much more rewarding to finish a shorter story than struggle with a long one and get stuck. (I love my long stories but they're a big commitment and it can get overwhelming fast - another reason I like to put them on the backburner now and again to take a breather from them).

Also something that I do is "speak" out scenes, like just speaking to myself out loud in the bathroom, playing both sides of an interaction. That's probably because I'm very character and dialogue focused and everything else flows out from that for me. I also like to write to music that I'm familiar with, just having it on in the background as sort of white noise.

I am not sure if any of that is helpful at all but thank you so much for your kind words. I'll leave the fics below, if anyone is interested. (My skz fics has officially pushed aside my phanfic in terms of stats and that's such a strange thing but I love that fellow STAY have embraced my words with such open arms)

so, i know a lot of profiling comes with investigative work. you know, the typical: age, weight, height, race, ethnicity, sex, etc.. i imagine that everyone who’s ever trained under batman is incredibly good at getting that sort of information at a glance, rattling off numbers like they’re reading from a script. however, one of those indications is incredibly hard to correctly guess from just a glance, and that’s age

personally, i think dick is the best at guessing at people’s ages. he can just take a few seconds and look at a picture, or have someone be pointed out in a crowd, and he’ll be able to give an exact age nearly every time. he’s so good at getting the ages correct that it’s uncanny and slightly un-nerving, as even bruce isn’t as accurate half of the time. they’ll try and confuse dick by showing him a lot of children’s pictures, as kids are notoriously difficult to parse through when ages 6-9, 10-13, and 14-17 all look the same, and dick will still get the age on the nose 95% of the time

this is because he’s really good at reading people and their general demeanor, more so than anyone else in the batfam. people like to joke around that dick is the social butterfly of the family, and though that’s certaintly true to an extent, dick is also just really good at paying special interest to the people he’s with. just by listening to them talk and what they talk about, watching what their hands and feet are doing, the clothing they wear, it’s easy for dick to sort through common trends for certain age groups and narrow it down to the exact year, and a few times the exact month, and get it right. dick knows how to look through the facade a person puts up and see them for who they truly are

(this is why damian stood out to dick in the early days. damian acted three times his age, spoke like a rebellious teenager, and fought with all the limber muscles of a twenty year old. and yet, dick saw through it all. saw the child underneath. really looked and payed attention to the ten year old beneath the capes and swords)

dick has even had informal training in this kind of niche trade before ever meeting batman. Haly’s had a booth they’d stick out in front of the tent, something to get a crowd collected and make a little extra money on the side, and a woman by the name of Francisa M’oore was also infamous for her ability to guess both age and weight in a few seconds. she wasn’t always accurate, comign within two to three years or off by ten pounds or less, but she taught the young Grayson her secrets, whispering to him to pay attention to facial expressions especially and to be careful not to over-guess (dick found out early on that people get offended when you’re too wrong). he picked it up quickly and it was always a fun brain game to sit next to Francisa and compare his guesses to her’s

and then he... left Haly’s and took one look at bruce wayne and thought 26, took one look at alfred and thought 43, took one look at jason and thought 14, took one look at tim and thought 15, took one look at damian and thought 10, ohmygod he’s 10 and he was never wrong. he was never wrong and they were all so young back then, but even then he knew

Hi Lost! I admire your work a lot, both here and on Ao3. As a writer myself, I was wondering if you have any recommendations for writing longer AU fics (like HMS Maria, one of my favorites) I’d love to try writing an Eruri fic set in Ancient Rome but I have no idea where to start. I tried writing a fantasy AU once and it got too overwhelming so I abandoned it. Sorry this is kind of a lot, just wondering if you have any research/planning tips! Thank you so much!

Hi @greenflower21 thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoy my writing, particularly HMS Maria, it’s a bit of a niche AU so I'm always delighted to know that readers enjoy it.

I’m not sure I’m really the best person to be giving advice on writing longer fics though because I am the absolute definition of a Pantser – I write by the seat of my pants, without outlines or timelines, and often I have only the vaguest idea of plot. Usually I have a very rough idea of how I want a fic to progress, but I have to start writing to find out where the story is actually going to go. This is a bit of a high risk writing strategy, as it’s very easy to wander off track, get bogged down, or write yourself into a corner. There’s also a danger that your timeline will disintegrate as you’re writing. HMS Maria is a case in point. I knew the rough direction the story would take, and there were certain incidents I wanted to occur at particular points, but I had no idea what was going to happen on route from A to B. This also meant I had absolutely no idea how long the story was going to be, and typically it turned out to be much longer than I’d originally planned, which is a real danger with this style of writing. However I never lost sight of where the story was going and I hope I managed to retain its internal consistency. The timeline is a disaster though, if you poke it too hard the whole story will fall over. I knew the fic would end with the Peace of Amiens in 1802, but because I didn’t know how long it would take to get there, the internal timeline probably doesn’t bear scrutiny. Now I’ve finished the fic I need to go back and tweak the dates to make sure the timeline hangs together.

The opposite approach to Pantsing is Plotting, where you plan every detail of your story before you start writing. Sometimes this involves spreadsheets. Plotting is a much more sensible way to write longer stories, as this approach will give you a clear road map and timeline to follow, however there’s a risk that you might lose some of the spontaneity of writing and there’s also a chance that by the time you’re written your plot outline, you’ll have lost interest in your story. HMS Maria is the only fic that I’ve ever attempted to write an outline for. This is it in its entirety:

I don’t think one approach to writing is necessarily better than the other, it’s just a case of experimenting with both approaches to figure out what works for you. Also if you google Pantser vs Plotter you’ll find loads of useful writing advice.

When it comes to writing historical fic, my advice would be to immerse yourself in the period as much as possible. Read everything you can get your hands on; fic, novels, history books, articles. If you can get ahold of contemporary sources, read those too, they’re invaluable and will give you a real feeling for the period. I knew nothing about the late 18th century, sailing or the Royal Navy when I started writing Age of Sail fic ten years ago, but I started learning from fanfic, before moving on to novels, history books and contemporary sources. (Melville’s White-Jacket is almost like a primer for writing Age of Sail fic.).

Writing period typical dialogue can be tricky as a lot of it will be jarring, obscure or incomprehensible to modern readers. Ideally you want to include enough period expressions and turns of phrase to give a flavor of the historic setting, without making the story difficult to read. In HMS Maria, Erwin speaks a bit more formally than he does in canon or in most modern AUs, while Levi is pretty much just Levi, though I did temper some of his more modern profanities.

Some readers and writers of historical fics get a bit up their own ass about anachronisms. Personally speaking, I think it’s a question of balance. I can forgive some creative anachronism if it serves the plot and doesn’t throw me out of the story, because ultimately the story is the most important thing. I’ve come across some writers who get so hung up on period details that they forget to tell a compelling story. At the end of the day, if I want historical authenticity I can just go and read a history book. If I’m reading a fic, I want plot and character development and slow burn and enemies to friends to lovers, and ohmygod there was only one bed. Basically all the good stuff, and if you can throw in a bit of authentic period detail along the way, then that hits the sweet spot for me

I have no idea if any of this is of any help, but ultimately I think the best advice when it comes to writing is to keep trying until you figure out what works for you, and don’t be discouraged if some stories don’t go in the direction you originally intended. Good luck with your writing!

He can't stab or eat anyone. (And if you would write this, what would the set-up be?) But anyway, Here’s the thing: I actually have this one very specific AH/AU where Klaus and Caroline are Not Murder-y. W i l d as shit I know, I’m entirely sure you’re disappointed in me. BUT! it’s like this very very very Niche trope that I will actually K I L L for.

I have an unhealthy like truly unhealthy obsession with football players [not the bs American kind, get the game’s name out of your damn mouth] but Actual football, like I cannot explain it, I was actually texting Kelly a while ago about how Football players are just a separate brand of HOTNESS, And we’ve both come to the conclusion that like it’s definitely some primal response that makes them so attractive to me, and like evolution of all things is the only thing that can explain why I go feral for them lmfao, and also Ted Lasso [a show entirely about a football club] is my favourite fucking show atm so all of that combined, I would literally die and kill for a Football AU with Klaus as a big mean arrogant and temperamental football captain playing for one of the giants in the premier league and then Caroline comes along and he like trips down the metaphorical stairs of life and falls face first for her when Caroline is like being her usual snarky mostly tactless borderline bitchy sunshine self, basically Caroline is mean to him and Klaus melts. She does not hold back on letting him know what an absolute jerk he is and Klaus is like “well problem is sweetheart, I want to be your jerk” lmao. Like I imagine Enzo is part of the team and is the biggest lil shit and Caroline and Enzo hit it off as besties and Klaus is just F u m i n g in the sidelines and is like constantly growling beneath his breath about how men who are, biologically speaking, more closely related to the domestic canine species than most people should not have the right to breathe in the same air as His Angelic Caroline.

OH and Caroline is the team’s sweetheart and hypewomen, I’m thinking she does PR for them, but basically she’s loved by all [as is law] and Klaus really reallly grapples with his cavemen tendencies to just throw her over his shoulder and go around growling Mine.

aaaaaaand at one point, in the future, Klaus wants his last name in the jersey changed to FORBES lmao if you know what I mean.

So basically yeah this is the only AH/AU I will write myself where Klaus can’t like Kill and have tea parties with the dead bodies, and it is a Sacrifice I am willing to make only for this one AU because the sizzling Hotness of a Football Player™ is just goddamn irresistible GAH.

Like I’ll be honest, excluding the above AU, I think the best I could do AH/AU wise where Klaus can’t be murder-y will still be a Crime AU, like he’ll have to At Least be a Pretentious Brilliant Thief or Conman or some sort of criminal who maybe doesnt kill but like he HAS to be a Bad Guy™, I mean I can’t possibly imagine myself writing an AU where he isnt criminally fucking shit up as is his calling on Earth.

Like if Caroline is wronged by Anyone, she will pay them back in kind and she will Not be holding back her punches.

Caroline takes no shit, from anyone but like least of all from Klaus, and if he fucks up even just once (1) there is no going back Until Caroline has exhausted every last drop of Anger in her.

Like I simply don’t get how a Caroline who is meek and forgiving and accepting of other people’s wrongs against her can exist? LIKE SHE’S A WHOLEASS BITCH IF YOU HAVENT NOTICED AND SHE’S GONNA TURN AROUND AND FUCK SHIT UP FOR YOU. I cannot understand how Caroline can be written as someone who just conveniently rolls over and takes shit? I mean omg any response to being severely wronged that isnt an immediate thirst for blood, or at the very least, ANGER within Caroline is, as viewed by me, pathetic. One is when people are out here writing Caroline being wronged so G R A V E L Y by Klaus and her response to this is somehow: He’s a Dark Man, I’ve known this All along especially before letting him make Me the final resting place for his dick! so honestly speaking W h o ‘s fault is it?? like omg I wanna bite and chew paper when I see bs like this.

And the other is when it isnt Klaus wronging her and someone else being a bitch I’ve seen ff’s do something Even Worse and get Caroline to outsource the revenge taking part of business to Klaus LIKE TF DOES KLAUS LOOK LIKE, an Indian?? [listen I’m allowed these racist jokes bc I’m Indian] Like BABE NO put that knife back in Caroline’s hands let her stab who ever she wants herself!

And also the idea of Caroline being generally meek, regardless of being wronged, is like huh??? to me, no like seriously did we watch the same show??? this girl literally Bullies Klaus and Klaus melts for her, that is like their whole dynamic, she’s mean as shit to the BIG BAD VIOLENT ALMOST GODLY POWERFUL WOLF and he’s like That One....that’s the Woman I want to spend the rest of eternity with. But also Caroline in general is a sassy bitch through out the show, like forget Klaus, just by herself she’s mean and catty much like Rebekah or Katherine, Sure she is an adorable sunshine baby who is kind and loving to the people she cares about, is loyal with the strength of the Himalayas and takes it upon herself to pour her love without any restraint over anyone she decides to commit to either platonically or romantically, but like this why we have multifaceted female characters who are bitches while being good lovable people too man. Like honestly fics where Klaus falls for Caroline bc she’s characterized as pure and good and kind or whatever 2-D bullshit makes no sense to me.

literally cannot stop thinking about bnha/kingkiller chronicles crossover... this is so niche but also the only thing that’s been in my mind the entire day... it’s about the SYMBOLISM and the WORLDBUILDING and the fact that in canon!! mic named eraserhead!! he did that!!! he NAMED him!!!!! it’s about the POTENTIAL that adem shouta has... it’s about him traveling with hizashi and becoming a teacher to a bunch of young students... i am in way over my head thinking about this.

I hadn't even thought about the naming thing ohmygod

Okay so, Hizashi's clearly an Edema Ruh with a talent for naming. I'm imagining him traveling with a troupe that also includes Shirakumo (who does some acting and, like, medieval percussion stuff, but mainly deals in stage effects and generally making their plays look good) and Kayama (who basically functions as the face of the troupe, the one who handles most interactions with outsiders, and she also plays the flute and sometimes she'll sing, and she's a wonderful dancer)

They pick up Aizawa when he's just left Ademre for the first time. His Aturan isn't very good yet, and he has no idea how to read any of these people who don't signal their emotions, while they think he's cold and closed off, of course.

Hizashi takes to watching him when he practices the Ketan because it looks super graceful and he totally immediately has a crush on the mysterious, handsome stranger. The first time he sees Aizawa use those same movements in a battle, he has to actually sit down and take a moment (it's not like he's a fighter, and clearly Aizawa doesn't need help taking down those bandits)

By watching him closely, Hizashi eventually figures out that Aizawa shows his emotions through sign language, and that he's actually expressive as fuck. You just need to learn how to read it. Cue long evenings by the campfire where Aizawa demonstrates Adem sign language for them all to pick up. They show him music in return, though even after almost two months with them, he still gets super flustered about public performances like that. He does have a nice singing voice, Hizashi eventually learns, because one night, in the quiet of their wagon, Aizawa sings back one of his songs like the most precious gift he could possibly give him.

Of course technically Adem mercenaries are supposed to make lots of money for their school and take jobs and fight, but somehow Aizawa just gets... stuck with them? And then there's also the fact that children outside of Ademre are often not cared for very well, and that's a scandal he will not stand for.

So new kids keep being added to their troupe, which is actually great because as long as they're still young, they'll be able to learn to perform pretty easily. They also pick up a sickly, skinny man along the way who always looks supremely awkward when their nightly storytelling turns to the great hero All Might. But everyone has their preferences.

Meanwhile Aizawa spends most of his time teaching the kids about the Lethani, but he never pushes the Adem ways on them - rather he lets them grow in between his teachings and what the Ruh have to offer. Turns out Yagi is actually a trained arcanist, so some of them even learn some real magic! Especially the small, green-haired kid who writes magnificent plays while they're on the road (mostly about All Might).

The next time they travel close to Ademre, Aizawa takes off on his own for a couple days ("You're too loud for my people," he says, and his hands say 'gentle tease' and 'fondness') and he returns with a kid in tow who looks and acts so much like him that they all immediately love him. (And while I do love me some trans Aizawa, in this au I'd be way funnier if he was cis because of course the Adem don't believe in fathers, so he gets really, really confused at everyone assuming him and Hitoshi are blood related)

Also the quiet boy with the dual-colored hair and the too high quality clothes that joined up with them is definitely the son of a noble family, but they're just gonna ignore the consequences that might eventually have because he needs love.

And then there's the little girl who doesn't seem to be... of this world. Not all of them believe in the fae, but Eri makes them wonder sometimes.
