we heard that you are jewish. is it true? either way, we appreciate you for respecting jewish culture!
I'm not Jewish. I did, however, grow up in what was for a while a very Jewish neighborhood in the Long Island suburbs... which is probably where I initially learned the respect. I remember during elementary-school-period catechism (one of my parents was Catholic) getting deeply pissed off at the nuns for talking shit about my Jewish friends—claiming that their prayers to God only went "so high" (indicating a measurement at about knee level)—and decided then and there that This Religion Was Crap and I was going to do some reading to find one that worked better.
And guess what? I'm still doing the reading. :)
People who read my work will find all kinds of influences surfacing, (More data and specifics in this old post.) And as it says over there, if it all seems a bit syncretic, and that makes me a syncretin? Guilty as charged.
Meanwhile—to keep all the differing religion-adjacent approaches in my mind from getting uncomfortable with one another—when I swear, I do it by great Thoth: inventor of alphabets and the art of writing, master of scribes, god of the invention and wrangling of languages, deviser of calendars and project manager of the infrastructures of spacetime.* Does that make me some kind of pagan, then? (shrugs) Damned if I know. After I'm dead, I'll inquire. :)
(ETA: Sometimes people will see/hear me saying, "Sweet Thoth on his e-bike...!!" or "...e-scooter"!" about something. For the edification of those interested: here he is.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Probably also patron of fountain pens. See up above there? The thing he's carrying in his non-handlebar hand is the pen-case that scribes keep their equipment in. It's one of his formal attributes. ...Now let's all fight over which pens he uses, and what nibs. :)

had the weirdest fuckin dream
i was downstairs in my pajamas in the kitchen, trying to unjam something from the refrigerator door, when something tapped on my shoulder
Tumblr media
it was this weird, black, sorta Thoth-looking mothman thing, at least seven feet tall, holding a regular notebook and pen
and Thoth here is asking for an interview for the "news" (he actually used air quotes?)
so he pulls out two of the dining room chairs, one for himself and one for me, and he asks me a bunch of questions about myself, my name, how i feel, what the new house is like, what being human was like
and the one that sticks out in my memory is "how soggy do you feel?"
and i THINK my answer was something like "like the bottomside of some pond scum"
Thoth nods his head, and i wake up at 3:00 am, and started writing this post
fuckin weird

The papyrus of Tjanefer. Thoth and the mouse-headed god, who wears a single maat-feather, hold the deceased's hands as the lead him to Osiris. They're followed by Hepet-Hor, who has lioness- and crocodile-faces, wears a white crown, and holds a pair of knives. The Devourer stands with her front paws on the base of Osiris' throne like a pet who wants a treat; I think this is a way of quickly summarising the judgement scene. Behind Osiris is a lion-headed god with two wriggly snakes coming out of his head. (Anyone who can read the hieroglyphs over the Devourer's head will have my eternal gratitude.)
When: Third Intermediate Period, 21st Dynasty

i swear the new age people making these “deity inspired decks” just make everything up.
the one time i see a deck with thoth included, these authors want to say “thoth was a high priest of atlantis before ascending and becoming djehuty” NOOOOOO HE WAS NOT!! ATLANTIS IS NOT AND NEVER WAS REAL OH MY GOD SHUT THE FUCK UPPPPPPP . and then they add lilith too saying that she is all about shadow work and the divine feminine.
i cannot stand these new age light workers who want to ascend to the 5th dimension , that is not how real life works!!! stop making shit up and letting people believe it jesus fucking christ!
