Top 5 spooky media?

Oh man, too many to count, haha, so how about my top five spooky movies I've watched this year so far?

Black Christmas (1974). I can't believe I'd never seen this Canadian horror movie about a group of sorority girls getting terrorised by phone calls over the Christmas break. It's genuinely really good, full of some delightful red herrings and some genuine scares. I jumped! A few times! That doesn't often happen these days, haha.

Sissy (2022). This one was such a delightful surprise to me! I'd been keen to see it as a big fan of Aisha Dee and also just generally tending to enjoy lowbudget Australian horror, but it was so much more than that. It really skewers wellness culture and social media, using both to explore the way damaged women can use both to perpetuate violence. It's flawed, but also a bit magic? I loved it. Let more women be evil!

Helter Skelter (2012). One of my favourite films of all time is Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue, and in so many ways, Helter Skelter feels like its in conversation with it. A Japanese horror about a pop star losing control of her mind and body, but where Perfect Blue leans into questions of identity and fan entitlement, Helter Skelter feels much more about ambition, class and how you stay on top. Infinitely fucked up, but a lot of fun.

Carnival of Souls (1962). This was actually a re-watch, but given it's been a decade since I last saw it, it was pretty delightful to get to re-experience it. A forgotten classic that seems to be recently re-remembered, this movie about a woman who survives a car accident that kills all of her friends only to be chased by death is a perfect gothic ghost story. It's so visually innovative too, every shot sublime, I can never recommend it highly enough.

Lamb (2021). More gothic fairytale than horror, I really, really enjoyed this Icelandic film. The concept of a couple of farmers grieving the loss of their child only to find one of their sheep giving birth to a half-human, half-sheep child is strange, but also ends up really affecting and emotionally rich. It's a movie I've thought a lot about, especially as it really inspires a lot of thought about the treatment (and often kidnapping) of biracial children under imperialism . I am Team Mother Sheep.

Top 5 headcanons?

I like it when Wild (or botw Link in general) has some weird death stuff going on, whether he actually died and has unlocked some spooky death stuff (talking and seeing ghosts, being able to hold other spirits within his body ie. the champions and the sheikah monks) Like that dying fundamentally changed him and opened him up to the world of spirits and gods, he can hear and communicate with Hylia and ride the lord of the mountain and is buddies with Malanya and can see koroks and dragons which can normally be seen only by the pure of heart or children and it's not his hero status that opened him up to this world but the fact that he died and came back. (this can also be linked to my witch/potion maker Wild hc but I shouldn't ramble too much about him I've already done that...)

Wind's growth spurt. He will eventually be the tallest among them. Even taller than Time and Warriors. It all happens before the events of the comic are over. He's going to be like six feet tall.

Fierce Dadity > evil war god as a tool for angst and whump, I think it is objectively far more interesting as a vibe to have an extremely powerful deity that adopts the team's local dad. The dad gets out-dadded by the scariest dude imaginable. It's so funny and also I'm tired of the big bad mask that possesses Time and makes him kill the other Link's just bc the author was feeling evil.

Fairy Hyrule, not just as a fun little ability or spell but as like, a part of his identity and biology. He isn't even Hylian canonically (which makes his nickname very funny to me), but a foreigner from Calatia, (which I have my own ideas about specifically to link him to my fairy hero but that's not what this is about lol) I just think it's very fun when his fairy origins are played with for plot and also for fun.

Time's Age, with all the time travel and time loops, he genuinely does not know how old he really is. sometimes he acts kind of childlike and sometimes he acts like he's a crotchety old grandpa. It doesn't help that he was raised by the oldest being ever and alongside eternally youthful beings with him being the only one who could ever physically age. He can't even figure out a number range for how old he is. It confuses him so he just doesn't think about it and thus doesn't like it when the chain speculates about it.

Top 5 Ted Lasso moments that inspired you or meant something to you in your real life (I am tipsy and feeling v emotional about this man can you tell)

Ahhh I wrote a quick list right after you sent this and then kept meaning to go back to make sure I felt good about the list? Anyway. I'm going to go ahead and listen to my gut (hey-o, Teddy boy!) with my original list:

“Thank you, fuck you” convo and everything surrounding it. I had one of those not so long ago and they’re not “fun” but man do they do something for the soul. 

Ted’s speech after ripping the sign: “Well, you know what I wanna mess around with? The belief that I matter, you know? Regardless of what I do or don't achieve. Or the belief that we all deserve to be loved, whether we've been hurt or maybe we've hurt somebody else.” It’s just so !!!! No offense to Ted’s speeches in season 1 or 2, but this felt the most relatable? Not that relatable is the goal but…I felt fired up afterwards?? It was nice. Like, the Tan Lines speech is nice but it’s a little like…martyr-y (okay, it’s a lot martyr-y) and I just like how much more raw and honest Ted is in this speech. He’s tired of the team's violence in the name of the sign and tired of getting in his own way and tired of worrying so much about certain things. It’s very human and I think that’s why it feels more like a pep talk than his other talks. 

“Problems, they’re like mushrooms. The longer you leave them in the dark, the bigger they get.” It’s such a simple little way of explaining that idea, but it’s sooo true and good to remember (especially when you have anxiety). I think of it often!

The idea of never letting someone hurting get by you, how being sad and together is better than sad and alone, and how you gotta try. They’re all cheesy sayings, but together they make a really good point about continuing to try and do better by each other. I feel like during the season 1 hiatus there was a lot of talk about “what do we owe each other” and that’s the thing I’ve always found most inspiring about Ted. I know in the end he’s learned he can’t help everyone all the time (and also he is very tired), but I think that’s the message he’s imparted on everyone around him (including the audience). It's inspired me to be better to the people around me.

I feel very “what’s the fourth thing??” about picking a final moment for this list. There’s no one moment. I just really love Ted and I’m very proud of him and I’m inspired by his existence as a character I can think about and view on my television whenever I feel like it 💜

For the game Top 5 fav performances on Good girls

Ohh, that's a good one, anon. The five I think about all the time:

Mary Pat tells the girls she chopped up Boomer's body and put him in the freezer. Both Allison Tolman's performance and Christina, Retta and Mae's reactions are genuinely perfect, I love it so much.

Mae in 3.08, but especially when she empties Marion's ashes. Mae simply is one of television's best criers, but the way she slips into exhausted hysteria here is perfection. It's a hard line to walk, and she just nails it.

Retta's "I'm that bitch" speech in 2.03. Iconic, spectacular, showstopping, etc etc. Retta's so good across the board in Good Girls, but this scene really encapsulates what makes Ruby such a brilliant character and foil to Beth and Annie. She doesn't enjoy crime, but for her the ends justify the means. She saved her daughter's life, their daughter's life, and she won't be ashamed of that. Love it.

There's about a million Christina scenes I could list too, but the one that actually immediately sprung to mind is the first time she sees Dean after his arrest at the start of 4.03. Christina and Matthew always played really well off each other, but her glassy eyed exhaustion and guilt and shame in this scene just always really, really gets to me. She's so, so, so good.

The bedroom scene in 2.09. Both Christina and Manny are wonderful here, really leaning into the vulnerability of the moment, and it just works on so many levels. I love that they both play it a little tentative, a little awkward, a total juxtaposition to the bathroom break. It's bright and well lit, and they stand opposite each other with their eyes wide open to this thing between them and it's just a bit of tv magic.

first of all, I haven't been reading a whole lot of fic lately and I am absolutely terrible at keeping track of what I read and how much I like it so take that into account, also it's hard for me to decide which one I like the most just in general so it's less of a top five and more of a rec list lmao. anyway, without further ado...

Man, I Feel Like A by Ontoxay (xaymak): Wild has gender stuff, there is more than one of this theme and I only just realized it. He's genderfluid and starts out presenting femininely so the rest of the chain assumes that he's a woman and he kinda goes with it until it becomes a bit of a problem.

Different by Janazza, WhyDidIWriteThisTrainwreck: Another one with Wild vs Gender, where she's kind of a woman who dressed as a man since a very young age to keep with the standard of being the hero and singlehandedly inspired me to write my own Fem!Wild au, marketed as a Mulan AU.

Sapphire Circlets; (solution) by Aquaticflames: last Wild vs Gender one I promise, this time featuring Gerudo Town and Time being a bit of an enby king.

Not Half Pawd by Song Mina: Legend and Twilight get stuck in their animal forms and Wild is there too, they go on a road trip to fix that. Legend gets the pats he deserves.

Level One by LightBlueScrubs: this one is a more recent addition that I really enjoyed, most of the chain is part of an emergency trauma center which is all fine and good until someone familiar gets sent in to be treated. (it's Wild) I really liked how informative this one was, you can tell that the author actually works in the medical industry and knows how things work. This one made me enjoy learning things and that's always nice. It's like found family but they're all co-workers and exhausted. It balances POVs extremely well and bounces from past to present a lot to show Wild's relationship to each of them and why it's so devastating when he gets injured and it shows each of their reactions to finding out and UGH it's so good. Modern AUs can kinda be hit or miss, I like a lot of Zelda stuff for the magic and fantastical elements but this one is so good at making the characters interesting without having to include destiny and all that.

Now to my own fics...

Of Dubious Sophistication: My own Wild meets the chain fic, which is ongoing, slowly... but it focuses on different parts of his past and personality that he is trying to hide and how the chain slowly learns about him outside of their first impression of him. There's also more going on behind the surface but that's not a surprise. Most chapters are focused on Wild and another one of the chain, giving them each time to shine and a moment to realize that Wild is not what they thought he was.

Another Second Chance: Wild goes back in time to the AoC timeline to help prevent Ganons return, but no one recognizes him and he decides that it might just be best if they never find out. (this one is old but it's getting a revival... believe me :)) There's a lot of focus on Wild and his family and also his connection to the champion's spirits and how he's a little more magical than he lets on.

Who Could Ever Leave (But Who Could Stay): Warning, this one is sad and I had a great time writing it. I love the fact that Wild is so far in the future for the others and that there's so much time between them and he's the last one. I love thinking about endings and death and mourning and having to confront his place in time. I love making him (and you) cry. I like to think it's in a cathartic way though, I feel like people kill the Links for shock value all the time but that's not the part that hurts the most in my opinion. But also I wanted there to be hope, because canonically, there's a bit of an afterlife, and even after ten thousand years, the heroes were remembered.

Heavy in Your Arms: Basic bitch Twi and Wild bonding fic featuring Wild's memories. Hurt/ comfort, a bit of self-projection in the way that I want what Twilight says to Wild to be said to me and that's the crux of this fic. Everyone (specifically me) needs a Twilight.

I've Seen Hell (But This is a Bit More My Style): the first fic in my previously mentioned fem!Wild AU! Focuses on her life pre-calamity and how she was treated due to her obvious distinction from fate. There's also a fic where she's with the chain and one where she gets to be gay with Zelda, I am writing more for her though, she's just so much fun.
