For today's pride month post, let's talk about white tailed deer!
Now these guys actually surprised me, did you know up to 15% of white tailed deer are intersex? There are deer that are born with both sex organs, females that grow antlers, and even what's known as Velvethorns.
A normal buck will shed it's velvet from late August to early September, but velvet horns never she'd their velvet. As a buck's testosterone level rises as they get ready for mating season their antler's harden and their velvet is shed.
So why doesn't this happen to velvet horns?
Depending on the reason, be it birth defect, or some sort of truama to the testicles, these guys just never get that testosterone boost. It also leads to them having an appearance more similar to a doe than a buck.
They tend to shy away from male or female groups, instead forming herds with other velvet horns, they've even been known to adopt orphaned fawns!
Even the hunting community knows about these deer, some states actually having them tag the deer as "antlered" or "antlerless" to avoid any confusion!
That time of year again! I've got four trail cameras set up around my place at the moment (hoping to get some more soon!) and there are a TON of bucks hanging around this year. At least twenty different individuals. Big dudes, little dudes, wonky dudes, old dudes, dudes with one antler—just a bunch of guys being dudes!
I've been working on a rough animatic inspired by Sonic Frontiers' Final Horizon update trailer in my spare time. Threw myself into this without a plan so we'll see where it goes!
Maybe I've just had my nose buried in the books for too long, but something about this is hilarious to me. Scientists put 16 males together, told them a female was nearby, and the males got so excited in their search for females that they tried to mate with each other, except they were all too excited to even stand still long enough to attempt copulation
Had a bunch of pictures of these gorgeous Red-tailed Hawks on my trail camera. A local family of crows were BIG fans of the leftover Halloween pumpkins I carried down there and I think the hawks were either trying to grab one of them (they always showed up while the crows were there; see the time stamps on the photo of the crows flying away and the next one of the hawk) or just thought they might be eating something...tastier, haha. The hawks still inspected the pumpkins carefully each time before deciding they weren’t for them and flying away.
I've started reading The Sun Trail, I'm on Chapter 7. I personally like it so far, but that might change because it's just traveling. I've been thinking about how I could possibly change some deaths, like Fluttering Bird's and Bright Stream's as they are the only cats who've died.
(I haven't gotten to Bright Stream's death yet but it'll be in a few pages and Broken Feather also died but he's staying dead).
It'll go either 2 ways:
Clear Sky wouldn't let her. They just found out they possibly could be parents and Clear Sky is so excited, of course he wouldn't want his mate possibly getting hurt or worse. Despite her protests, he holds her back and Gray Wing runs to chase the eagles away. Possibly i could have him get grabbed or I'll have another cat take her place, that does mean Tiger Tail and Pale Sky live! (or whatever I decide to change their names to). I don't really know how Storm and Clear Sky will work but I'll probably have it be like an Aspen Whisker/Smoke situation. Also, Storm does live and Gray Wing might take her place. That means Thunder has three moms! (Storm, Turtle Tail, and Bright Stream. And possibly Slate.)
or
2. Goes in a similar way but Bright Stream goes with Gray Wing and does grabbed by the eagle but frees herself.
(Also was thinking she does get carried off by the eagle but she lives, gives birth, and dies. But I don't think I'm gonna do that.)
Refs for my cursed tails and sea trails au! I changed them a little from how they’ve looked in my last drawings, but I like these more. More about them under the cut!
Y/N is based on eels and sea snakes, the striped pattern coming from this sea snake, and the tail from this eel Reference
Sun wasn’t really based on any actual fish, just what I kinda know about fish anatomy. His spines are poisonous but he only really uses them in defense. He is carnivorous and mainly swims along coral reefs, taking badly of the open sea and the deeps. I did inspiration from these fish for him!
Moon is somewhat a twilight zone mer. Highly carnivorous, and according to sun, would not hesitate to eat other mer. Keep in mind they are not on good terms in this au. He has a few glowing parts. His lure, the yellow along his fins, and along the line of his underside. He usually doesn’t use his fins for bioluminescence though. He has the jawbones of a larger fish somewhat attached to his lower face, a sort of trophy he carries around of his first big kill. These were his inspirations.
