Many new or weaker athletes will use a short term passive stability strategy to create tension during lifts often placing their joints in suboptimal positions to produce force. In answer to a common question - Yes I only train with a TRX. Well technically 90% of the time combined with with x1 easy-level resistance band, portable kettle bells and my body-weight. It’s all I can fit into my 60 litre backpack squashed in with the rest of my life. The last time I used a conventional gym i.e a squat rack, bench press, dumbbells etc was over 1 year ago and counting because: 1. I Love being able to exercise anywhere in my own space, time and place. 2. My overall fitness be that physique, functional strength, flexibility, mind-to-muscle connection and general well-being has sky-rocketed since I stopped the ‘bro weights and focused on the elements of functional training with a TRX. BUT! And it’s a BIG BUT... I still have small calves. Rest days? Bollocks I would say, I must train more I would claim! I always believed if I wasn’t in a gym curling a dumbbell I had to train my arms twice as hard and twice as much if I used a TRX or resistance band to make them grow. Fast forward some time after more learning, peer inspiring and most importantly trial and error experience. I now realise rest is the key. I train my arms with a TRX and band twice as less as I used to but with better form and more focused, intense technique and guess what? They’re the biggest they’ve ever been 👉🏼👉🏼 and I realise I’ve always greatly underestimated the power of recuperation. I know I don’t have huge arms, the perfect peak or the greatest definition and that’s cool. The guys who live in gyms can take that trophy home. I’m just happy to have ‘some arms’ and be able to train them or any other body part on the road, travelling anywhere in the world with a cheeky rest day right here ☝🏼 in Holbox, Mexico. I put most of my bicep growth down to incorporating band training. It’s something I never used as a youngster but I’ve found the time under tension at full contraction stimulates my nervous system like a car battery voltage. Fancy a bit of that? You shall not pass! Actually at this point I was so lacking in energy you could have flicked me over to pass, hence the supporting stick. I was at that stage of cutting that I hate - the bottom end. I felt flat and floppy 😅 standing there at the bottom of La Fortuna waterfall, Costa Rica. A deficit cut of 700 cals with a total daily intake of only 1800cals in the final stages of a three month diet made life tiring. But not now! 💪🏼👉🏼… Two months later here in Nicaragua and my energy is back to pumping and the TRX workouts are awesome. I’m back at 2700 cals a day, heading towards the 3000 mark after slowly reverse dieting back up. My metabolism is faster, I’ve added muscle and I can eat like a fiend again without adding too much fat. I train only with a TRX and use resistance bands and portable kettlebells for supporting functional fitness. I haven’t been to a gym in ten months and feel better than I ever did than when I relied on one and weights. How do I stay fit without a gym? I used to ask myself this question all the time. I knew I wanted to craft a life travelling the world, exploring cultures and working as a digital nomad whilst doing so but I also knew I was scared to leave the vicinity of a gym. Fitness plays a huge part of my life, I’m addicted to it. I’m no athlete or body builder but I always put my health first and have a desire to look better and feel better through fitness. So a few years back I began exploring and learning the possibilities of exercising with a TRX. I have my fitness heroes. One being @nickcheadlefitness I’ve always looked at this chap in admiration. Not for his physique but for his scientific teachings, don’t get my wrong he looks bloody great too. I can hand on heart say I learnt more from Nick over the years reading his books and watching his videos than I learned studying up to my Level 3 PT course. Now constantly on the road without a gym and just my TRX I still incorporate those learnings - the fundamentals of fitness and nutrition specific to my goals. I count my calories and use flexible dieting to make sure the different worldly cuisines I gobble down fit. I plan my nutrition and compare foods on the GI index eating specific ones at the right times for the most beneficial advancements. I focus on form with slow controlled contraction technique and over-load principles. And I’m chuffed to say I do this living on the beaches, in the jungles, wherever my backpack takes me without the need of gym, just my TRX. A better physique, more flexibility, greater functional fitness… I wouldn’t say any of those are my number one #gainz. It’s been freedom. The freedom of ditching the weights and gym for a TRX in my own time and space. The freedom of not psychologically confining myself to the requirement of needing or relying on a gym. I’m not saying it’s for everyone but perhaps it could aid at times in certain situations. Maybe I should become a TRX nomad salesman?!
