Duke and Jason
The interesting thing about Duke’s relationship with Jason is that though he is a part of the family, he wasn’t really there for a lot of the divisive things that happened when Jason came back. Duke also never knew Jason beforehand or encountered the ghost of previous Jason; Dick, Babs and Bruce knew Jason before, Tim, Cass, Steph, and almost everyone else had to live with the ghost of Jason’s death haunting their moves and their relationships with Bruce, before Jason came back. Duke, meanwhile, joined after Jason’s return, and for him the status quo has always been what it is. To Jason, having someone who never thought of him as different than the Jason he is would be very important to him. Despite Duke’s knowledge of the past, sometimes distance makes the biggest difference - and Duke has the luxury of not having any emotional entanglements into who Jason was.
In addition, Duke comes at a time where Jason is able to openly admit he has brothers - and very much considers him to be one.
Tumblr media
Artemis: Honestly? It was like kissing my brother. If I had one. Jason: Thank god! I was thinking the same thing. And I have four.
On Jason’s side, he seems to have decided to take a sort of mentorship role for Duke. The main instance is in the Roll Call short story in which Jason and Duke do a fight simulation on a very high level and Jason shares his hard-won wisdom.
Tumblr media
Panel One -  Jason: Lesson number one: quips and retorts should only be used for distraction.
Panel Two- Jason: Find your own way. Because following in the Batman’s footsteps and being something that you’re not -- is the fastest way to get killed
Panel Three- Jason: No. That’s a given. Lesson number four? No matter how you feel or what you think... you’re never alone
Jason makes sure to tell Duke that no matter what, he’s never alone. Jason wants Duke to know that no matter what, he will always have his back but it means more than that. Jason had long periods of time where he thought he was abandoned, and he lashed out as a result; hurting himself and others. A lot of the advice Jason gives Duke is not only useful things, but things Jason wished that he knew when he was younger. It seems to imply that Jason might see a bit of himself in Duke, and that he sees it as his responsibility to help Duke become something better.
Tumblr media
Jason: -- How many times are you planning to die, Duke?
Roll call also has a scene that drives me insane in which Jason recreates being beaten to death by the Joker in front of Duke. It's pretty ambiguous whether or not this was on purpose. If it was on purpose, was it to show Duke what happened to him, was it to confront his fears on his own terms with his brother next to him? If it was by accident, did he brush it off to make Duke feel safe, or was he okay with Duke seeing him like that because he trusts Duke? Either way, Jason is comfortable enough around Duke to feel safe with him seeing one of his biggest traumas.
Tumblr media
Joker (standing over Jason with a crowbar): I guess it’s over your dead body
And, after they finish the simulation (and Duke of course jumps right in to help Jason), Jason's right back to joking with Duke.
Tumblr media
Jason: Heads up Narrows, more clay bastards on the horizon. Batwoman and her crew usually warm up in the mud room on a level four practive setting.
Duke continues to help save Jason, notably in the Cheer’s story arc.
Tumblr media
Jason: ... Have your back (urban legends 6)
(Although, it equally drives me insane that despite Duke helping Jason and Bruce in this arc, he’s the only member of the family to not be in both Jason and Bruce’s dream worlds which drives a lot of questions - do they not want Duke to have been a vigilante and thus part of the family? Has Duke's entrance into the family been too recent for them to add them to their fairy dream worlds? Is the author simply forgetting to mention Duke being there even though Duke is in the comic saving Jason and Bruce? My personal interpretation is because Cheer deals very much with Jason wanting the Joker dead, a dead joker means that Duke’s parents were never Jokerized, and thus Duke couldn't be a part of the family in a dream world where Joker was dead.)
Their relationship with what the Joker did to them is another huge parallel between Duke and Jason. When the Joker killed Jason, and when Duke’s parents were Jokerized mark a difference in both of their lives - now divided in the before Joker touched their lives and after. It's interesting to see how both Jason and Duke expected Batman to save them initially, and ended up needing to take their lives into their own hands, though there are huge differences in the way Jason fought for revenge, when Duke’s feelings were expended on fixing his parents and not towards the joker. Of course, the two situations are not completely comparable, but it is a similarity that impacts their lives.
Tumblr media
Duke (to Batman): I know you can save them. My parents. All of them. Just like you always do.
They also have nicknames for each other! Jason calls Duke “Narrows”, which is a pretty outspoken acknowledgment of some of their similarities, being children from Gotham.
Tumblr media
Panel One - Jason: Narrows, meet crime alley. we do things differently. Find a functional outfit.
Panel Two - Duke: Need help? Jason: No, narrows, I don’t
It is important to note that Duke and Jason’s living situation are not identical, though they are similar - the Narrows is often neglected in Gotham.
Tumblr media
Jim Gordon (about the Narrows) : Its Gotham’s poorest neighborhood. Made up of nearly a dozen diverse communities. Its been let down over and over by the mechanisms put in place in order to protect it. Under-protected. Under-represented. It’s been burned so many times you are practically feel the embers everywhere.
However, as opposed to Jason, Duke did have a stable family as a child, his mom was a social worker and his dad was a construction worker. After his parents were jokerized, Duke had to live in a series of foster homes, so both Jason and Duke (along with Dick) were impacted by the childcare system in Gotham.
In addition to Jason being comfortable sharing himself with Duke, Duke is able to get by with a lot of jokes about sensitive topics in Jason’s life.
Tumblr media
Duke (about Batman): And he’s not my boss. Or the the target of my daddy issues.
Tumblr media
Jason: you’re the latest robin. You’re supposed to... whatever. Brighten his dark side. All that crap. So he doesn’t propose to a villain and then run off and do... This! Duke: Jay, what? Dude, when you were robin you got dead then came back as a vigilante villain! And you’re telling me to “brighten his dark side”. (Batman 33 (2016))
Tumblr media
Duke: Question. Didn’t you die already?
If that had been anyone else, I don't think Jason would have brushed it aside that easily! Anyways, Duke and Jason have a super interesting relationship and I hope more people keep exploring it!

How the Batboys View Food (HCs)
(A/N: BIG OL TRIGGER WARNING. I’ve been writing other stuff on other blogs but I wanted you to dump this here cause writer is struggling with food :3 and I see a lot of ways that the batboys could have the same mindsets. So this is a lot of me projecting but also just drabbling. Pretty angsty I guess in some parts, enjoy. If you’re struggling with eating or self-image, feel free to reach out to me bb, my dms are open <3)
TRIGGER WARNINGS: eating disorders, unhealthy views of food, anxiety, food insecurity, angst, writer lowkey projecting, this shit is probably VERY decently triggering so be warned please please please, my feelings will not be hurt if you skip
Let me reiterate that THESE ARE NOT HEALTHY VIEWS OF FOOD. Many of the thoughts portrayed are HOW THEY THINK of food, not ways you SHOULD or COULD think of food. It’s cathartic to see them through the light of my own issues, I wanted to share. Love you all.
————————
Bruce Wayne
Probably one of the healthiest views of food
He grew up without ever having food insecurity AT ALL bc he’s so so rich
But he has been starving before when he worked with the League of Shadows, which means he knows the feeling.
All it is is unpleasant to him, though
He’s trained to be able to deal with it, so I think Alfred definitely has to make sure he’s eating
But he’s not doing it on purpose.
He understands EDs, and he takes them super seriously, but he’s never struggled with that, really.
He might go through phases of body dysmorphia because of wanting to be as physically adept as he can be, but I don’t think that would have to do with restricting food very much.
Again, Alfred lets him know when he’s doing too much
I think he likes good food, but he’s been so spoiled in that sense that it’s not really a big priority to him
Dick Grayson
Writer projecting on Dick Grayson pt 1/many
Ok so Dick was raised in the circus, being a child athlete (acrobat)
Obviously his parents were super wholesome, they weren’t much of a root of any problem
But having comments on your physical performance, being stuck in a tight ass leotard, thinking so much about your body at a young age, all of these lead to some type of problems.
Writer is 100% not projecting their ballet childhood
Poor little Dick watched the Strongman talk about his food intake and protein and calories and he thought “wow, I should do that to be strong too”
Cue guilt around food
Dick sees food, at least for the first part of his life, as an obstacle
The less he can get of it, the more strong he can be
He kind of sees it as something to be counted, measured (Dick is wrong, reader, eat your burger and enjoy it >:()
He doesn’t actually starve himself to a point that he starts to get skinny, but he restricts himself to have peak performance
It’s just that his mindset about it is so bad
One time Alfred cooks dinner and Dick is having a bad day (Robin or young Nightwing days). He steps in and just-
“… I had a burger for lunch” said Dick, looking frozen in place.
Bruce just chuckles, not noticing his discomfort. “Hey, that’s fine. You can jog it off tomorrow. Plus, you could do to put some weight on, yknow?”
“No, I… I can’t. I’m at my limit. I wasn’t gonna eat dinner,” Dick tries to explain, picking at his thumb nervously.
“… What do you mean your limit?”
“I uh… diet” Dick says, though his heart is quickening.
“Are you counting calories, Dick?”
Long conversation ensues
That might be super ooc, you get the idea
Bruce does not STAND for it
Dick recovers while Jason’s a kid.
He might have a relapse when Jason dies, just out of grief
But he gets over it
He can’t ever get rid of that voice that tells him that what he’s consuming is numbers
But he’s started fostering one that tells him how delicious that goddamn hotdog is, which is pretty cool
Jason Todd
Poor baby :((((
He grew up poor, so food insecurity was probably definitely present
Plus his mom wasn’t super into taking care of his needs
So he grew to subconsciously see food as fuel, but in a less healthy way.
He learned to measure how much he was able to run on, what gave him the most energy rather than what was good for him or tasty
All of this was for survival until he showed up at the manor
At first he was ecstatic about having more food security
And he was never one to turn down food
But out of habit he kind of never got food for himself on purpose unless he REALLY needed it
The type of kid to say “but I don’t need lunch, I had breakfast.”
Which is valid in some cases depending on whatever, but the subconscious thing that was nagging him was the small fear that still lived in him of someday not being able to live in that same security he’s grown to know
Bruce has to make sure he eats, because he’ll always eat what he’s offered without a second thought. He just won’t feed himself
Jason is 100% convinced he’s fine, he just doesn’t need it.
He does, in fact, need three meals a day with his highly active twelve year old boy self smh
When he comes back as Red Hood, he still kind of carries that with him, but he’s more willing to eat now.
I think dying kind of made him realize that he doesn’t want to miss out on anything or hold himself back
Plus he has a lot more muscle to feed now
If it makes sense, he just kind of doesn’t think of food much at all now
Much like Bruce
Tim Drake
Ugly sobbing :3
Writer projecting pt 2
Tim, Tim, Tim, neglected Tim :(
He views food very much as something earned
He enjoys his junk food or whatever, but he feels like if he’s not doing good enough he doesn’t deserve to eat at all
Nervous wreck he is, this happens often
Doesn’t do well on a mission? No dinner.
Not doing well in a class? Not eating till he fixes that grade.
Bruce finds out and almost passes out cause WHY ARE ALL THESE KIDS HAVING THESE ISSUES
It’s because writer is projecting, sorry Bruce
Bruce helps him through it a lot
Cheat code: if you go through a significant amount of effort to make him food he can’t turn it down
Or if you buy it for him
It’s an anxiety and bargaining thing for him, but he’s a tough boy he gets thru it 💪💪💪
Damian Wayne
Hot take but the league actually has pretty healthy standards on eating
They need to be efficient, yeah, but they recognize that to do that they need FOOD
He might be a little skittish around like processed food or new foods though
Has a thing for texture
Overall one of the healthier views on it though, and everyone else is watching him like a hawk to make sure it fucking stays that way

Tumblr media
Hope everyone had a good week. Here’s what I’ve been reading recently. Remember to comment/kudos if you enjoy! Remember too that I’ll be sharing reader recs on April 30th so feel free to drop an ask or send a DM on Twitter with your recent reads.

~*~
***Charcoal dust in my eyes by betheflame, Nixie_DeAngel (Non-Powered AU/1OK)
Dr. Tony Stark teaches engineering at Stonybrook University, so he assumed his son would attend there. Instead, Peter chooses nearby Fallwell State and gets assigned Art Professor Steve Rogers as an interdisciplinary advisor.
If that wasn't annoying enough, Rogers' best friend Bucky happens to be the guy who Tony and his best friend Pepper have a bit of a history with and NO ONE holds a grudge like Tony Stark.
But then... Pepper tells him to stand down and so does Peter and what if Bucky isn't the enemy... does that mean he can do something about this crush on Steve?
***This is not a drill by sabrecmc (A/B/O /23K)
“Can I—can I see him? I mean meet him. Uh…welcome him to the team?” Tony clarified, probably not very well, he knew.
“Well…there’s a bit of an issue with that,” Fury said, and Tony figured this was where Fury got to whatever it was that had really forced his hand and made him call Tony in, knowing how much the man detested having to do so. “You see, well. He was suspended in the ice for nearly seventy years,” Fury began. Tony nodded along, because he could do math.
“I’m sure he has a lot of adjusting to do—“ Tony started.
“Seventy years,” Fury repeated, cutting Tony off and leaning back in his chair and making it rock slightly. “Of no suppressants.”
“Oh,” Tony managed to choke out past the lump that had suddenly formed in his throat. “Oh.”
Something to talk about by Mireille (A/B/O /29K)
The art room next to the auto shop has been empty since Tony started teaching here. That's about to change.
take another piece of my heart now baby by blue_jack (Fake dating/27k)
“I think we should get married,” Tony announced as he let himself into Steve’s apartment, plopping next to him on the couch.
down on the farm by tellxmebby (Non-powered AU/7k)
Tony laughs, throwing an old rag at the blond man, who bats it away in the air. "Fuck you."
"Mm," Steve rolls back under the car with a newly fitted socket, "maybe later."
Steve grins up at the chrome above him at the lack of response. It must take Tony a minute to recover, but when he does Steve hears him huff.
***breaker of horses by sineala (Gladiator AU/48K)
What do you do when the Roman Empire you were raised to love consigns you to the sands of the arena? Antonius is a prince of the Dacians, captured in war and sold as a gladiator. He yearns for his freedom. Stephanos -- the last living centaur -- is his fellow slave and trainer. Centuries old, disillusioned by a Rome that has become a shadow of itself, Stephanos has all but given up on life... until he meets Antonius, and both of their lives are forever changed.
to liars and saving the world by magicasen (Ultimates/45k)
When Tony's life is in danger, Steve does the only thing he can do to save his teammate: he makes an honest man out of him. Steve and Tony's sham marriage is only supposed to be a blip in their history that no one has to know about. But when they're outed to the press, and with ghosts from his past coming to haunt him, Steve must come to terms with the idea that his own feelings for Tony might not be a lie.
the single biggest problem with communication by BlossomsintheMist (Comics Fic/108k)
In the wake of Steve's return from the dead and the end of Norman Osborn's reign of terror, the superhero community is recovering--Steve has taken on a new role and Tony is trying to put his life back together. Things are still awkward between them, but they're determined to put things to rights. But when a discussion about their feelings leads to further misunderstandings, they discover that might be more difficult than either of them realized. Set in the early Heroic Age after the end of Dark Reign, this is a get-together story about crossed wires--and second chances.
Written for the Cap-Iron Man Big Bang. The gorgeous art for this story, by phoenixmetaphor, can be found here, or here on tumblr!
All i want by sineala (Ultimates/2.5k)
Steve's not used to anyone spoiling him. But he's willing to let Tony try.
Steven G. Rogers by Raikishi (MCU/3.3K)
“Steven G. Rogers,” he reads.
Steve can almost hear the gears turning, shifting their focus.
In which Tony tries to figure out Steve's middle name
will we ever say the words we’re feeling by theappleppielifestyle (MCU/1.6K)
He breaks off then, the realization of what he’s just revealed finally hitting him, and he stops, and Tony’s still staring.
(Or, Steve and Tony argue and Steve lets something slip.)
Touch my heart and kiss my soul by laireshi (PWP/2k)
Steve’s supposed to be damn good at strategy, but he’s not quite sure how they’re supposed to make it to a bed when Tony’s kissing him like this.
Hello, this is--wait, what? by shrill_fangirl_screaming (Wrong Number AU/1.8K)
Tony should really make sure he memorizes everyone's phone number properly. Steve should really stop picking up wrong numbers. They're a match made in heaven.
***1-900-Soulmate by SailorChibi (Soulmate AU/5.2K)
Later, Tony would maintain that it wasn’t his fault. He was drunk and bored (lonely) and it just… happened.
Pepper would look at him and, in the driest tone that Tony had ever heard, remark that he was the only person in the history of the world who would stumble across their soulmate while drunk dialing a phone sex line.
