☘️ I'm back from Ireland ☘️
And had an absolutely amazing time. It's an overwhelmingly beautiful country and I had so much fun with my friends. ❤️ Here are some photo highlights (for Dublin see my other post).
View of the Irish Sea and Wicklow Mountains from Dalkey Hill
We visited many castles, some more haunted than others 👻
A vegan scone and chai latte in Galway 🥰
We climbed Diamond Hill in Connemara National Park 💪
Found beautiful flowers in the rocky landscape of the Burren
Drove the Ring of Kerry, along with two other peninsula loop drives on different days, and saw loads of gorgeous sights along the way, like at this stop we made at Waterville
Even the view from the rental car was breathtaking most of the time!
Due to weather conditions we did not make it to the top of Devil's Ladder, but it was still a great, if wet, adventure!
Oh and we stayed in some incredible Airbnbs (this one used to be a gatehouse 🤩)
We also went on an AWESOME eco marine tour, but I'll make a separate post about that.
So yeah, I'll miss Ireland, but I'm also glad to be back home. 😊 Time to rest now 😴😴

Songbird
Scenario Prompt: “B hearing A sing for the first time and being surprised at how good they sound.”
Requested by: @lost-girl-of-onceuponatime
Pairing: Joshua Faraday x GN!Reader
Warnings: Mentions of guns (cleaning them).
Word Count: 1.1k
General Taglist: @criminaly-supernatural, @caswinchester2000, @imaginesfire
Mag7 Taglist: @spuffyfan394 - Let me know if you want to be added.
*The song lyrics are from a song called "The Meeting of the Waters". It written in 1807, first as a poem, then it was set to music.
-
Faraday groaned as he climbed down from his horse, the ride from town was a bit longer than he'd like. He wasn't sure why you had all chosen a safe house so far away. But he wasn't one to complain about a roof over his head and a bed under his back.
He grabbed the bags from his saddle and moved to take them inside. He had noticed that all but one horse was gone. He was the first to get back.
The others had split up, there was a possible job to take up in the next town over. Goody, Billy and Chisolm had gone to talk to the townsfolk. Vasquez, and Jack to learn more about the gang, and Red to scope out the town and surrounding area. Faraday was left to get supplies, while you stayed behind to clean and prepare the guns and other supplies.
After he put everything inside he wandered back outside, wondering where you had gone too. As he stepped off the porch, he halted in his step when he heard something.
A light breeze was blowing towards him, and it was bringing with it an unusual sound. Music? He stopped and listened, holding his breath. There it was again. Coming from the nearby barn.
Faraday walked over, taking quick but quiet steps. He stopped just outside the barn, as the words he had been hearing before became clear.
Yet it was not that nature had shed o’er the scene
Her purest of crystal and brightest of green;
‘Twas not her soft magic of streamlet or hill,
Oh! no, — it was something more exquisite still.
Faraday almost felt his heart stop. He knew this song. He had heard it before as a child, his mother had sung it before. It had been a long time since he had heard it last.
Faraday peaked around the corner, his eyes landing on you as you sat on an overturned bucket. Your gun was in your hands as you carefully cleaned your pistol.
Your voice was smooth as it came out, and if Faraday didn't know better, he'd of thought you'd been trained to sing.
‘Twas that friends, the beloved of my bosom, were near,
Who made every dear scene of enchantment more dear,
And who felt how the best charms of nature improve,
When we see them reflected from looks that we love
You continued the song, and Faraday's heart beat heavily in his chest. He leaned against the doorway, having forgotten that he had previously been sneaking around. He was caught up in the sound of your voice, surprised at how good you sounded.
Sweet vale of Avoca! how calm could I rest
In thy bosom of shade, with the friends I love best,
Where the storms that we feel in this cold world should cease,
And our hearts, like thy waters, be mingled in peace.
Faraday recited the words in his head, unaware that his lips were moving along as well. His eyes stared at your profile, and he found himself seeing you a bit different than he had before. He knew you were attractive, flirted with you relentlessly, but now, as he watched you, heard you, it felt a bit different. As if he was really seeing you. And he admitted, he really did like what he saw.
Faraday hadn't realized that the song was over, until you looked over at him. His body seemed to stiffen as he felt like he got caught doing something bad. He expected you to get embarrassed, chastise him for spying.
But you simply smiled at him. "Hello Faraday." You greeted calmly.
Of course you wouldn't get embarrassed, your voice was good, and you probably knew it.
He cleared his throat as he stood up. "Well I didn't know we had a little songbird in our gang of gunslingers."
You rolled your eyes lightly as you put down your pistol, reaching for another. Your heart was beating a bit heavily. You pushed down your anxiety. You hadn't realized Faraday had been there, watching you.
"I wouldn't say I'm a songbird." You said softly.
Faraday sat down on a hale bay nearby, "Hell, I haven't heard anyone with a voice like that in years. You could be a professional."
You smiled a little. "That was originally the plan. Or at least, my parents plan." You spared a look at him, and saw surprise on his face. "I loved to sing ever since I was a child, but when someone takes something you love from you, forces it upon you, and tries to use it to make money, you lose your love for it."
Faraday watched you as you spoke. There was a hint of heartbreak in your voice, as well as malice. He didn't know much about your past, but he was glad you felt comfortable enough to share something.
"So I don't sing for people anymore. Just myself usually." You continued.
Faraday nodded lightly, "Well I wont tell no one." He said with a soft smile. "But I wont complain if you ever wanna sing again, within earshot I mean."
You met his eyes and smiled in return. He looked down at his feet and the spoke again. "My mother used to sing that song when I was younger. She had come from a family of immigrants, from Ireland. I was surprised to hear it."
"I heard it from a Gleman that came into town once. I loved the words so much I asked him to write them down for me." You paused for a moment, unsure if you should pry. "Did your mother sing a lot?"
He nodded, "Yeah. Almost every day, or night, to help me go to sleep. It was a nice memory to come back."
You heard the hint of what sounded like gratitude in his words, but you did not push for more.
You both looked up at the sound of hoof-beats, someone had returned.
Hearing Vasquez call out, Faraday called back. As he stood up, he looked down at you and smiled "Don't worry songbird, your secret's safe with me."
"Wont be for long if you keep calling me that."
He chuckled, as he began to leave the barn, before he began to hum the tune of the song. Spinning around as he left, he winked at you once before disappearing.
You smiled to yourself as you began to pack up your guns. You began to hum under your breath as well. Feeling a once familiar joy of music coming back to you. Maybe it wont be so bad to sing for someone again.
xx End xx

Trio
I haven’t been very inspired lately to write. But I sat down and wrote this ficlet today for the event, so that makes me proud even if it’s super short.
Theme: Historic
Prompt (Lyric):“Sweet vale of Avoca! how calm could I rest
In thy bosom of shade, with the friends I love best,
Where the storms that we feel in this cold world should cease,
And our hearts, like thy waters, be mingled in peace.”
—The Meeting of the Waters
Trio
1890s/1900s PodSquad AU
Roswell New Mexico Ficlet
“This is stupid, Max. What if Mom and Dad wake up?” Despite her protest, Isobel clung to the back of the tricycle Max was pedaling along the dirt road. She’d refused to let him go alone when he’d insisted on following the feeling that had awoken him for the third time in as many weeks.
“There’s something out here, Isobel, I’m telling you.” Max insisted. The bicycle lamp lit the area with it’s red and green side lights, and in the near darkness there was something almost eerie about the way the colors shaded the landscape around them.
“But we don’t know....” Isobel trailed off, spotting something ahead. Sitting on the fence of the ranch was a young preteen boy about their age with a head of wild curly hair.
He turned at the sound of their approach, hopping his perch and pulling a switch knife out of his pocket. “Stay back.” He snarled.
Max could feel it - the pull to the young man in front of him. This was why he’d been waking up. The third child from his memories. “It’s you! Do you remember us?” Max stopped the tricycle, hopping off the seat. Isobel stepped down off the back wheel bars reluctantly, eyeing the boy suspiciously. He was barefooted and dirty - his clothes worn in comparison to the nice clothing the Evans kept Max and Isobel supplied with. When he didn’t respond, Max pressed on. “I’m Max, and this is my sister Isobel. I don’t remember your name, but I remember us being together in the green place-”
“I don’t remember you.” The boy cut him off, keeping the knife trained on them.
“You’re fibbing.” Isobel accused. “I can tell.”
“Isobel.” Max lectured.
“What? You honestly don’t believe a word of it either.”
“Why don’t you tell your Church Bell to shut her sauce-box?” The boy snapped at Max.
“Why don’t you try and make me you pigeon-livered-” Isobel began.
“Hey, hey, c’mon.” Max kept himself between them. “Look, what’s your name?”
“What’s it matter to you?” The boy replied. “You're clearly living the high life. What’s some guttersnipe off the orphan train matter to you?”
Max couldn’t help but feel hurt at his words. He remembered waking up in the caves - somewhere green and damp. The three of them had survived for a time alone in the woods, until they’d gotten too close to town. Then they’d been taken to the Orphanage. He hadn’t liked it - it had been crowded and noisy and dirty. Then the Evans had come to take him and Isobel away with them. He’d never known what happened to the other boy until now. Couldn’t have imagined that someone hadn’t taken him in - but apparently they hadn’t. He’d heard of the orphan trains - kids brought out to be auctioned off to the farms and ranches for work. “But… you’re like us. I know you can feel it.”
“I don’t need you. I don’t need anyone.”
Isobel huffed. “Bully for you. We’ll just go then.” She stormed back to stand next to the tricycle..
“Will you at least tell me your name?” Max tried one last time.
“... it’s Michael.”
Max hesitated, before pulling out a small bag from his pocket. “I have some gum drops-”
“I don’t need anything.”
“I’ll just leave them here, and you can take them or not…” He set them on the fence post, before going back to the tricycle where Isobel was pretending to not watch the exchange. Michael didn’t say anything more as he turned the tricycle around and head back up the road.
“Waste of good gumdrops, bet he doesn’t even take them.” Isobel huffed once they were far enough away to be out of earshot.
“I’m coming out again next week.” Max told her. “You can come or not.”
“Don’t be daft, of course I’m coming.”
Max felt something settle in him at her words. Because somehow he knew this was right. Three of them. There had always been meant to be three of them.
Notes: This is meant to be set in the late 1800s/Early 1900s. Essentially, my thought process was for the crash to have happened out east, and they’d all been brought to New Mexico. Michael more recently than Isobel and Max.
Some of my research was super quick, so I’m not positive if the orphan trains went to Roswell or not. I know they went to Texas.
Bicycles and Tricycles were experiencing a boom in the late 1800s, and - yes, they did have non-electric bike lamps. Some with colored glass. They’re pretty neat looking in pictures!
Slang:
Church Bell - A talkative woman
Sauce Box - Mouth
Pigeon-Livered - Lily-livered

New Year Hike (Toronto)
In an incredibly satisfying “end of year wrap”-style, my first hike of 2021 linked up all of my previous hikes throughout the city. It was also probably my longest hike - about 11 kilometres (7 miles). I met a friend and colleague for today’s hike at Broadview Station. It snowed a bit last night so the city was looking beautiful, and temps were around freezing - not too cold!
We walked to Chester Hill Lookout, which I was a bit disappointed in - the lookout view is mostly of the DVP and other highways. From there, we walked up to Todmorden Mills Park.
We explored this area a bit and then continued along Pottery Road. I was intrigued by “Fantasy Farm”. The horses were only screaming horror movie to me. I’d like to come back and find out what a fantasy farm entails in the future - the walks in the area are chained off for now.
One of the underpasses we walked through had animal-themed pillars:
The Lower Don Trail ran through Pottery Road and we took a short detour up this trail to admire the river for a bit.
The designs used to encourage safe crossing were clever I felt - the middle section of the road has a path that forces a momentary pause in the middle before completing your crossing. The road also has a fun ecological pattern (blue waves) painted in the crossing sections, instead of the usual yellow lines.
After this detour, we followed Bayview down to Evergreen Brickworks. This was the “aha” moment for me, I hadn’t been able to see this trail (on the opposite side of the road as Brickworks) on my previous hikes. The trail was winding...AND it got us there!
The big pond (resevoir? body of water?) at Brickworks was frozen with a thick layer of ice that was beginning to get a bit slushy.
We passed through Evergreen’s South/West parking lot and followed a trail (neither of us knew where this would lead). There was a wide clearing followed by a very icy trail, and we were suddenly in Beaumont Park - another trail to follow!
We followed the Park Reserve Drive trail north through David A. Balfour Park. Here’s a cute hockey player I made the acquaintance of.
We exited David A. Balfour Park just below the Mount Pleasant Cemetery via a staircase a bit north of the Vale of Avoca (I’ll never get sick of over the top landmark names).
This was us after 3 hours of winter hiking!
