Lian Adams had a normal life until Aaron Strider decided to collect a new toy.

Bentley’s feet hit the ground and he hits it running, as soon as he sees that Lian’s car isn’t in the back. He rounds the corner, expecting to see the red hatchback in front and stops dead when it isn’t there. It’s like someone has punched him in the solar plexus, his lungs struggling to inhale again as the air rushes out. Numb, he brings his phone to his ear, already dialing.

It goes straight to voicemail, no ring at all.

His mouth dry, he rings again.

Nothing.

Voicemail.

He tries again.

Voicemail.

By the fourth time, panic is setting in, thick and heavy and making his head vibrate like a hive full of bees were bound and determined to make honey inbetween his ears.

“Lian, it’s Ben. Where are you?”

“Killian, you just ran to get some gas right?”

“Li, baby, I’m not mad, please come home?”

“I’m getting worried. Call me back, okay? I love you.”

He paces infront of the restaurant, the only light coming from the street lamps that flicker and hum.

He waits for almost an hour. But Lian never calls him back. He sits on the curb, waiting.

Bentley doesn’t want to go home.

He doesn’t want to go home to an empty house, with his boyfriend missing. He doesn’t want to go home.

So he doesn’t.

He walks the thirty minutes it takes him to get home, just a couple of blocks. And then he continues. Looking. Lian’s red hatchback wasn’t in their apartment slotted parking space. Lian wasn’t at home.

It’s nearly 5 am, five hours after his shift had ended, before Bentley has to stop or risk collapsing on the curb. He looked everywhere. The creek where they tossed stones to see how big of a splash they could make. The park. The corner store on the corner of block street and fifth avenue. The 24/hr pharmacy where Bentley got his asthma medication filled. The McDonald that claimed to be open all day and night but only till 1 am…

There was no sign of Lian. Like he had evaporated or skipped town because his mother had flown in from Texas on short notice and the only good grocery store for vegan options was a city away.

He returns to the apartment - no red hatchback in the parking space - and slumps down on the couch in their small front room.

The apartment is silent where it was usually filled with Lian humming as he cooked. The only sound being the soft hum of the refrigerator and the AC, and his ragged breathing.

He’s dead on his feet, from an eight hour shift and then the five more hours he’d spent desperately looking around town as far as his aching feet would take him. His heart aches with worry, and it’s in this near silence that he begins to weep softly.

All Bentley has is a text from 11:45 pm.
