9. “Tell me to stay and I will be here for as long as you’ll have me.”

All the childrearing books Vector managed to get his hands on back in the day encouraged parents to "sleep while the baby sleeps".

Even at that point in life he thought it was horseshit; Charmy was no less bothersome as a baby than he is now - worse, even, considering he couldn't yet form intelligible sentences. Sleeping during his short-lived naps would have left anyone cranky and in a horrible mood, and he made such a ruckus it would have been impossible, anyway. Such a suggestion was only begging for trouble.

And the situation isn't much better at present, either. Sure, the little bee has been sleeping through the night for years, but now it's Vector's turn to stare sightlessly at thin air, wondering why the hell he can't simply get some shut-eye when he has the time to - he's tired plenty, as usual, so that's not the reason, and it wouldn't be a valid one even if it were. The night's made for sleeping, not for brooding and worrying about bills.

Because that's the issue, of course. His bloody brain just won't let itself be switched off, even for a second, and that's why he's still sitting in the office wracking his head over nothing of use instead of snoring away the hours. Honestly, the gall of it.

"Do you mind if I keep you company?"

The crocodile startles, and when he turns around he finds Espio standing beside his, an impassible look on his face. Vector has half a mind to ask him how does he manage to go around so silently, but that's a brand of banter they've been cycling through for long enough now, so he just sighs and shakes his head.

"It's fine. Go back to sleep."

"Do you mean that, or are you just being pigheaded?" Instead of complying, Espio hops onto the desk to sit cross-legged on the surface, an eyebrow raised critically.

"Because I can keep you company, if you want me to. I will be here as long as you'll have me, if you tell me I can stay."

A second refusal is on the tip of Vector's tongue, but he can't bring himself to voice it aloud. He knows he should - he wouldn't be a good boss if he didn't ensure the rest of his team is getting at least a modicum of decent rest - but Espio's presence is already working the same magic it has for years, a calming, steady aura that seeps right into the bones and seems to soothe even the gnarliest of problems.

"Yeah, alright," the crocodile concedes, slowly. "I guess you can stay. That'd be nice."

"Just as I thought."

And if Espio looks a tad too smug about his success, well, so be it. It's a small price to pay, at such an hour of the night.

Do you think that there will be an increase of shadamy and vespio shippers because of the murder of sonic the hedgehog?

Shadamy I don't think so cuz it was already a quite popular ship, I've mostly just seen those same shippers happy about the content

And Vespio I don't think so either, I haven't seen anyone making their interactions shippy which I'm GLAD cuz I really don't like that ship
