Monday Metro - Part 2…. Concorde on line 12.

Concorde, one of the largest interchanges in the Paris Metro system, links lines 1, 8, and 12. Artist Françoise Schein designed the tunnel with lettered tiles spelling out the entire 1789 Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen (Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizens). There is no space or punctuation between the words, they've all been collected together at the end.

The artist has decorated with the same theme other metro station around the world such as Parvis de Saint Gilles metro station in Brussels (Belgium), Parque metro station in Lisbon (Portugal), Westhafen metro station in Berlin (Germany) or Universitetet metro station in Stockholm (Sweden). But also Luz Metro Station in São Paulo and Siquiera Campos metro station in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) or La Moneda metro station in Santiago (Chile).

On a trivia note: Concorde was also the first station to suffer a serious accident in 1900: short-circuiting caused a fire and led to a collision between two trains. Thirty-eight people were injured!

During the COVID lockdown in March of 2020, I walked past the Betriebsstätte Westhafen every day. I wondered what lay beyond the tall brick walls and metal gates, imagining massive warehouses filled with goods from around the world, heavy machinery, and the hissing sounds of welding torches. The Westhafen seemed like a serene, massive creature breathing in and out. I couldn’t help but wonder what secrets lay hidden within those walls and what stories those machines could tell. Even during a pandemic, the world kept turning, and the machines of commerce and industry kept building, creating, and evolving.
