100 YEARS OF SUNTORY WHISKY

Keanu Reeves and Sofia Coppola reunited at The House of Suntory in celebration of 100 years of the brand’s whisky.

The John Wick star with director Sofia Coppola, at The Londoner Hotel, with the pair having recently joined forces to film two adverts for Suntory whisky. 🥃

At House of Suntory, have been pioneering Japanese whisky since 1923. As they celebrate a century of pursuing their craft, they continue to push the boundaries of what Japanese whisky can be.

The House of Suntory is a House of Japanese artisans, crafting world-class spirits, inspired by Japanese nature and mastered with Japanese craft. In addition to luxury brands Yamazaki, Hakushu, Chita and Hibiki, they also have Suntory Whisky Toki, Roku Gin and Haku Vodka as premium offerings. They do more than create high-quality spirits; they embody the Japanese philosophy and traditions that are a full expression of everything they make.

Shinjiro Torii was born in the Meiji Period, when Western culture and civilization suddenly flowed into Japan. At a young age, Torii entered into an apprenticeship at a pharmaceutical wholesaler in Osaka that carried Western liquors. There he engaged in stylish Western pursuits and mastered techniques of mixing, then developed a discriminating palate and nose. He mastered techniques of mixing and blending through his apprenticeships.

In 1923, Shinjiro Torii envisioned a whisky filled with the essence of Japanese nature and crafted by artisans through a patient process of enhancing the work of nature. He achieved that dream, and today they are a House of three generations of Japanese artisans inspired by Japanese nature, crafting world-class spirits rooted in a century of tradition. They do more than create high-quality spirits; they embody the Japanese philosophy and traditions that are a full expression of everything we make.

In the year 1899, Shinjiro Torii went independent, renting a modest house where generations of pursuit of a dream all started.

100th Anniversary Limited Edition. This Yamazaki Mizunara Single Malt is comprised of meticulously selected malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 18 years in solely Mizunara casks, created in honour of House of Suntory’s 100th anniversary.

The result showcases the rare, distinctive beauty of Mizunara oak, which is considered the signature “enhancer” of Yamazaki, providing unique Japanese character and elegance.

100th Anniversary Limited Edition. The Hakushu 18 Peated Malt is made up of carefully selected malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 18 years in various casks, created in honour of House of Suntory’s 100th anniversary.

The Hakushu Distillery blenders work with peat, while softening the palate using the exceptional mountain water of the area, filtered through ancient granite rocks.

More than an iconic line in a brilliant film, “Suntory Time” continues to evolve and gain recognition in Japanese whisky culture. For two decades it has been embraced and echoed across the globe in connection with our world-renowned spirits. It all started with a glass of Hibiki, but today there is a Suntory Time for every individual, every occasion, and every friend we meet along the way.

I recently purchased a bottle at auction of the Glenlivet 12 from the 80s. And I’d have to say it was quite different liquid entirely. Whether from old bottle effect, or distillery expansion in recent years there was certainly some more oxidative notes. Nuttier in general but more pineapple qualities that the Glenlivet “the original” was famous for. However, The Glenlivet 18 remains a real treat, a combo of American oak and sherry butts give the quintessential tropical fruit notes and ripe banana that the distillery is famous for. I don’t know what it is about looking at the water and drinking but the two go together spectacularly!
