Chapter XV

Cautiously Cass

He felt like he had given his all. Cass & Babygurl were trying to work things out over long distance, but it left Cass feeling like there was still a void in his heart.

They went through all the steps of a breakup, without ever really breaking things off.

First, they quit FaceTiming every morning and night with one another.

To supplement, Cass would save His money for gas so He could come up every weekend to visit.Ruby was a hard running slab, but She was still an old school. The more Cass cranked Her up, the more She began guzzling gas and oil. The car had been through so much; She was beginning to lose her touch, which led to Ruby’s nickname being changed to Seefus. Next, the visits slowed to every other week and the FaceTiming went from every morning and night, to only mornings.

At night, Cass was busy exploring The Campus’ Safari.

After the nights fell off, They began to argue, like this:

“Cass, what are you doing up there?!” Babygurl would asked.

“I’m not doing shit! I do is try to be with you.” Cass would respond.

“IF you not doing nothing, why don’t you FaceTime at night anymore?!” Babygurl would ask him.

More recently, the arguments would turn to Social Media as the culprit:

“It’s not that I don’t love you, I just be busy...”

“You not too busy for your niggas though...”

“What My Niggas got to do with this?”

“I been watching your N4L Account!”

“Again, what that got to do with me and My Niggas?”

“Whatever Nigga. You think I wouldn’t notice D-Run coming up there to visit, next week!”

“Why D-Run can’t come visit Me and Herb?!?”

“Whenever Yall Niggas get together... Bad shit happens...”

“Aint nothing going on. Quit being so paranoid.”

D-Run arrived on a Thursday. Even though, it was Football Season, He was able to convince his coaches, that, he needed some personal time to go see his family. Lamar wasn’t that far from BMT, but D-Run had been training so hard for The Team they allowed him to take Friday off from classes and practice to appease his need for time to unwind. He arrived early Thursday evening, ready to party with his nigga. They hadn’t seen each other since the time they were all congregated in Herb’s quaint apartment.

After a night of rounds upon rounds of shots, they arrived at the nearby gym facility for a game of pickup basketball. Most of The DC Team was still drunk, high on life, or too busy to come hoop. They had E’Chi as Center, Herb at the Four, BrisQuo played the Small, D-Run ran the Two, and Cass played the Point.

Granted, no one on The Team, aside from E’Chi was over 6 feet. They knew coming in They were undersized and effectively use the Pick & Roll if they stood any chance of winning.

“E’Chi!” Cass barked. “Get yo big ass in the paint and stop shooting 3’s!”

“Bro! I can shoot 3’s!” E’Chi panted as he struggled back up the court after playing solid D on the opposing team’s Big Man.

“Leave that Nigga alone!” D-Run said as he set the pick for Cass. “You just worry about dishing to BrisQuo.”

No sooner than he said it, BrisQuo made his way to the 3-point line. BrisQuo and D-Run had similar body types. Both short, both pudgy, but each of them were light on their feet. BrisQuo had played football & tennis so, even though, he didn’t have the same conditioning as D-Run, and he had good balance and sporadic bursts of speed. Additionally, he had a 3-point shot that he couldn’t miss (so long as his legs were fresh).

BrisQuo caught the ball and put up a wild looking three, just as the other team’s Four “caught on” to the 3-point strategy, he hopped out to the three-point line to try and challenge the shot. He left Herb wide open under the basket. What looked like a wild three; turned into an easy rebound for Herb, and a quick bucket.

The score was 10-11. The Gym rules were game at 15, if no one was waiting, and 12 if someone called next. Their team had been running games back-to-back for the past three games., with little rest in between. It was obvious everyone was feeling tired. Gym rules further stated, that they were playing by 1s and 2s instead of 2s and 3s. Since they were on their fourth game, nobody bothered to call Beat by 2, because they knew, win or lose, this was their last game.
