Dress Code 2
Summary: A few weeks ago, you and Eddie got over a spat over Hellfire shirts. Now that the dust has settled, you decide to challenge his rulings.

Dress Code Part One
Tumblr media
Eddie sat at his throne on the far end of the long table, his DM screen propped up to hide the mess of notes that were scribbled on various pieces of papers that he had grabbed throughout the week. Eddie was never one to be organized, even with the things he was most passionate about. Whenever a new idea for the campaign struck him he’d grab the nearest piece of paper to take down the idea before he forgot; be it the back of a barely passed math test, a napkin that had been shoved in the dashboard of his car, or (in one case) in the margins of Dustin’s report card.
Of course, even as scattered as his notes were, there was no doubting that his campaigns always ran smoothly. Eddie always seemed to remember what note he put where, and there was minimal pausing to search for papers. If there was one thing he knew, it was how to keep his club in line. Outside this room he might be a fuck up, a coward, a guy from the wrong end of the tracks but in the Hellfire Club? He was in charge. He made the rules, and everyone knew it and dared not question him. Eddie had made his claim on being fair, yet not taking any flack from anyone in the club and that was how he liked it.
Everyone was to show up on time every week, anyone who didn’t show up would miss out. If they were late, there would be a penalty. If they did not come wearing the shirts that they had spent a good two weeks on, there would be a penalty. Life may have chaos, but at least in Hellfire, the chaos was his to control.
At least, that’s how it was supposed to be.
As Eddie hit the lights to set the ambiance, he heard a door slam and the sound of giggling. He leaned back on his throne and waited for you to make your way down to the table. Your laughter was unmistakable, and he knew you well enough now to know that this particular giggle meant trouble for him.
You were early, but you were always early. You always hated being late and enjoyed helping set up the table for everyone and chatting with Eddie before the game started. Eddie had to admit, you might be a pain in the ass sometimes, but he was always glad that you joined, even when you made questionable decisions in the game that made him want to pull his hair out.
He thought that you were joking at first; a very cute girl wanting to play Dungeons and Dragons with him and his crew? It seemed doubtful. You weren’t the first girl to be in Hellfire, Ronnie had been his right hand woman for the four years that she had been part of the club. Even some of the subs that occasionally popped in were girls. He’d never forget the times Sinclair’s little sister showed up to sub in, or even weirder, Nancy Wheeler had appeared at his table, while Mike explained that she owed him a huge favor.
Honestly, Eddie might have invited the Wheeler sister back if she hadn’t scared him a little.
Then you showed up during your second week at Hawkins high, walked right up to him at lunch in front of everyone in school and asked to join Hellfire. Eddie really didn’t believe it at first, he  had been approached many times by different people jokingly asking to join. Eddie accepted every time, knowing that most times they wouldn’t even bother showing up for the meeting. Anyone who did show up would be accepted as long as they went through initiation.
Eddie and the rest of Hellfire put any new players on trial in a grueling one-shot that tested their abilities and knowledge on the game. With each roll of the dice you had proved that you were here out of a genuine love for the game, even when your character died you acted out a heart wrenching death, no one in the club could say no to them joining the party.
You now stood before him, and he stared back from over the DM screen stone-face despite your mischievous smile. Even in the dim lights there was a spark in your eyes that usually spelled trouble for Eddie. This time he didn’t even need to ask what you had done, when it was staring right at him on your chest.
“Absolutely not.” Eddie said firmly.
You only laughed harder.
“What, you don’t like it? And I worked so hard on this shirt!” You tried to keep your face straight but there was no denying how funny you thought the situation was.
To your credit the shirt DID say Hellfire Club on it, but the difference was that the sleeves were now pink instead of black, and the logo had been distorted into something that was... he assumed to be cute? The weapons and demon head had been color shifted to pastel and now decorated with hearts. The letters were rounded like the notes of a teenage girl and the demonhead had hearts in its eyes.
Tumblr media
“I made it clear that we had a dress code for members-” Eddie started to argue. He already had a sinking feeling that this was not going to pan out in his favor.
“And I’m following it!” you argued. “I’m wearing a Hellfire Club shirt. That was what you made clear, right? That as long as I was wearing it, I wouldn’t face a penalty. Besides, this shirt breathes better and it’s so hot in here.”
“I think it suits me.” You continued with at shit eating grin, stretching the bottom of your shirt out to show off the design more. “Plus now I have two shirts! That means I have back up!”
Eddie didn’t flinch, knowing that you were reminding him of the time you’d almost overheated in the traditional shirt when you had been sick and the a/c had been out. Nope, he wasn’t gonna fold because he still felt a little bad about the situation. No way, he could be just as stubborn as you and he would hold his ground.
Eddie was always in control of the Hellfire club.
Eddie was in control.
“This is Hellfire Club.” He said, staring you down from his chair. “This is a club where we play a fantasy game and everyone in school thinks we’re some freak cult. There’s no way in hell you’re wearing that.”
“Come on, Eddie, look at how hard I worked on this! Big, bad, Eddie the Freak is so heartless he’s gonna look me in the eye and tell me that this shirt I worked so hard on isn’t the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?” You leaned over his DM screen and gave him your widest puppy eyes and pouted in a way that should have made Eddie laugh in your face.
It should have, but the way the candles made your eyes sparkle made his stomach twist in a funny way, despite trying to remain in control of this situation. He knew that soon the rest of club would file in, and he didn’t need them to suspect that when you smiled at him like that it did things to Eddie’s heart that he would prefer not to think about. He didn’t have time to think about that dammit, he was about to start the campaign!
You did look cute and that was half the problem, he already had problems keeping you out of his head and imagining you wearing his Hellfire shirt instead, and honestly he preferred that thought.
Why did you always have to challenge him at every opportunity? You’d poke at his campaign, ask questions that he wouldn’t have thought to answer, challenged his rulings and the world he created. The others never dared to question him the way you had, but it had always come from a place of passion for the story he told. You could be frustrating, but he found himself grateful for it. Most times.
“Think of it like challenging authority.” You said, leaning against the table, your eyes never leaving his.. “We’re already freaks here in school, why force us into your version of conformity?”
“The authority you’re challenging is your DMs’.” Eddie said, but he smiled despite himself. He stood up standing just a little closer to you than was necessary, looking over your shirt and trying not to look like he was oogling your chest. (Which, admittedly, he did commit the site to memory). It was well made (the shirt), and it was clear even in the dim light that this was for Hellfire and not any other club. It fit you in an odd way.
The others would be coming down soon, and he needed to make a decision now. The fate of his club’s integrity was at stake.
“Before you make your decision, Munster,” You said, holding up a hand. “I also come bearing gifts for my oh so gracious Dungeon Master.”
He still wasn’t sure how he felt about being called Eddie Munster, but at least when you called him by the characters name, it wasn’t filled with the venom that usually came with Munson.
Eddie raised an eyebrow, and crossed his arms. “And by that you mean a bribe?”
“What else would I mean?” You said brightly, rummaging through your backpack.
Before him, Eddie was presented with cold Mountain Dew and a rather large bag of beef jerky.
Ah yes, the one weakness to any good Dungeon Master.
Snacks.
How had you managed to get a cold one? Had you run to the gas station right after the bell rang and then booked it back here?
There was a moment of silence between the two of you as Eddie stared you down and at your offerings. Your face faltered for a moment, a hint of worry that maybe you had really done something wrong. Your playful smile drooped just slightly and there was that spark that flickered with doubt for a split second.
Dammit.
Eddie could handle Dustin and Mike, they were under his wing and being tough on them would make them stronger against the world. But you? You were strong in your own way. You were so unapologetically yourself that sometimes it made him doubt why you’d want to spend time with him outside of Hellfire. You didn’t come to Hellfire as a social outcast, you didn’t come because you had nowhere else to go, and you didn’t come here for protection from the assholes of the school. You came here because you loved the game, loved this club. If anyone else had shown up like this he would have given them a penalty for this stunt.
But you weren’t anyone else. You were you and you cared about Hellfire just as much as Eddie did.
Fuck.
Eddie took hold of the snacks.
“If Hellfire needs to show up during some sort of school assembly, you’re wearing the original design. If it’s gonna be in the year book, it’s going to be in the original design. Do you understand?” He asked, narrowing his eyes.
The light in your eyes lit up brighter than ever and, Jesus H Christ it he was fucking weak for that look.
“Thank you!” You laughed and threw your arms around Eddie’s middle. He tensed for a moment before relaxing and patting you on the head.
“If the others catch you like this they’ll think I’m taking bribes for more than just the shirt.” He said.
“So we can get inspiration if we hug you?” you asked. “Damn, you should have said that sooner.”
Eddie sighed as you pulled back. “I know this is you fucking with me. I’m not going easy on you tonight.” he accused.
“My safe word is ‘sprinkles’, babe.” you teased before taking your seat. From above he heard the chattering of Dustin, Lucas, and Gareth as they came down the stairs. Eddie moved back to his throne and took a heavy seat as his eyes followed you to your usual spot at the other end of the table.
Eddie was still in control.
Mostly.

hi reddit. here are some tips.
i will be putting these below a "readmore" - which is the first lesson. on desktop there is a button for this. on mobile you type :readmore: followed by a linebreak. it is considered common ettique to shorten your long posts in this way.
by the way, are you reblogging a long post that isn't under a readmore? tag that as #long post so users can blacklist it and not have to scroll for five years.
(weird gaps in bullet points due to character limits lmao)
Title. Icon. Banner. blog description. (look around if you need an idea for what to put in your blog description.) Blogs without this information (ESPECIALLY the no icon + no title combo) gets you blocked immediately. This is because tumblr has always had a severe bot problem. Just grab a meme from your camera roll or a picture of a character you like from google.
also, because most users have their pronouns in their bio, it is expected that you will look there to check before addressing them, out of courtesy. don't just default to "they" - only do that if a person's pronoun's are unclear or if the pronouns listed ARE "they."
Disable public likes. the like button is for personal bookmarking. very often, people will like posts they have not read yet, so that they can read them later. a person's likes is not always reflective of their stances, and if your likes are public, people may use them against you in an argument. think of your likes as your browser history. tumblr users value privacy in this instance.
unrelated to the above point: likes are also used to show compassion for a user going through a tough time, or to say "hey, i thought this joke you made was funny." this use of likes is more for friend-to-friend communication.
Disable anything in your settings that is algorithmic including seeing posts based on other people's likes (one, because algorithms exist to make you mad and two, as part of respecting privacy)
set "following" to appear before "for you" (and overall avoid "for you")
Snooze Tumblr Live (sorry. you have to do this once a week bc tumblr sucks.)
Open your askbox so people can communicate with you. Decide if you want to allow anonymous asks and/or public DMs.
Enable the desktop version of your blog. This makes it so that when you use a computer and go to [yourusername].tumblr.com you can have a website with HTML and CSS. tumblr has tried very hard to kill blog personalization but you can find many helpful users posting in the tags, as well as pre-made themes you can install. tumblr users are the ones making the bulk of neocities websites, and in general tend to be friendly in redirecting you to resources.
enabling your desktop blog also allows you to insert links and do very basic editing (like inserting line breaks) in your blog description (we call "bio") which translates to the mobile version of your theme. you have to do this in the editor for the desktop on a computer. also, editing your theme on mobile (like changing color, font) will undo your HTML. your best bet is to edit your mobile theme first and THEN do the HTML/link stuff on a computer. i know it sounds a bit convoluted but you'll figure it out. (this website is made of duct tape)
also while you are on desktop: download xkit rewritten. it won't work on mobile but it gives you a lot of helpful features. also consider installing ublock origin if you haven't already, because tumblr will sometimes add annoying widgets to their website and that tool will allow you to block them. i also use "palettes for tumblr" to customize my dashboard color. tumblr DOES have built-in dashboard themes but i do not like them personally.
pinned posts. you can pin any post you make or reblog. some people use this to pin a funny meme, and other people use the pinned post as an extended bio (or otherwise an alternative to it). a tumblr post made on desktop can hold up to 30 images (the limit is 10 on mobile.) you can also embed links, a video, and even audio. you can change text color, have bullet points, and increase font size. as such, you can express yourself much more in a pinned post than in your mobile blog description. a typical pinned post may include information about the user, a link to an external website (like a carrd, neocities, or linktree), and sometimes an image or two. tumblr allows you to disable reblogs for a post, so most pinned posts are set this way so it just stays on a user's blog.
DNIs (also called "BYF"). not everyone uses them, and they can be divisive. it stands for "Do Not Interact" - and is a boundary set to keep people away. this may include age (example: "minors DNI"), political opinions (example: "prolifers DNI"), and sometimes deeply niche online discourse. DNIs are also sometimes a joke (example: "DNI if you like tuna salad"). there is actually a meme where someone will write a post with a very long, unreasonable DNI and users will count how many apply to them.
If you would upvote a post on reddit, you would reblog it here. If you see something and you think it is cool, you think it is funny, or you think it is helpful, reblog it. Some users have sideblogs (you can have infinite sideblogs attached to your main account) to organize all of the posts they reblog. Others simply use a tagging system for organizational purposes (and so users can blacklist ("filter") those tags in their settings if they don't want to see the post). For example, if I followed a user for Star Trek, but they also posted a lot of Star Wars, I might add "#star wars" to my list of filters. This way, I am only seeing the Star Trek posts. Tumblr's default way of handling this is to display a box that says "this post contains #Star Wars" and you can choose whether or not to open it. on desktop with xkit rewritten, you can have it hide those boxes entirely. please use filters. your sanity will thank you.
In a reblog, Organizational Tags are for /you./ I see a lot of confusion about this from new users. If you reblog someone else's post and add 500 tags..... it's not going to get picked up in tumblr search. You're not going to get any sort of exposure. Because it is not your post. Those tags are only for /you/ - if you want to find the post again.
tags are also used for commentary. most tumblr users do /not/ talk in post replies or in the comments of a reblog. most of them talk in tags. tags have a character limit so these messages are broken up in fragments. tumblr uses a comma (,) to make a new tag, so users often use either no punctuation or a period (.) or a hyphen (-) to break up thoughts. two apostrophes ('') are used instead of quotation marks (because they dont work in tags). this is also where "tumblr writing style" comes from. we all began to write in lowercase and use punctuation in. a weird way. like. for emphasis. there is also the Tumblr Comma, a special unicode character that resembles a comma and works in tags when copy+pasted or put there with a keyboard shortcut. but this is often not used. here it is: ‚
also here's an example of tags. you will notice that commentary goes before organizational: #GOD DHSHSKDDJDL #i cannot BELIEVE i forgot about this. what the fuck #star trek #spock
when leaving tags, most users talk to themselves. but please remember that tags can be seen by anyone, including the original poster. in general, it is discouraged to traumadump or be rude.
"prev tags" (which tumblr staff is trying their damnest to erase sadly) is when a user reblogs a post from another user and tags it simply ''prev'' or ''prev tags" (meaning "i agree with the previous user's tags"). sometimes it's because a thoughtful observation was made, but usually it's a way of saying "hey! that was a funny joke!" without putting the user on blast by screenshotting the tags. it's most common between friends and mutuals (users following each other). i would say it is equivalent to users whispering to each other and giggling rather than getting up on a table and shouting. "prev tag chain" is when users reblog "prev tags" "prev prev tags" - and so on. however, sadly, tumblr has removed the feature of moving backwards in a reblog chain on desktop. i have not updated my app and refuse to, so i so not know if it is gone on mobile as well, but it probably is. EDIT: the browser extension Xkit Rewritten has an option now, in "tweaks" called "restore links to individual posts in post header." it should be the first option. prev tags, on desktop at least, is saved!
screenshotting someone elses tags and adding the image in a reblog is known as "passing peer review." it is, however, considered to be Greatly Annoying to accompany those tags with unnecessary commentary (ex: "these tags pass peer review!" "WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE THIS IN THE TAGS" "LMAAOO THIS IS SO FUNNYYY"). the tags can stand on their own. the only instance in which this is different is during a serious discussion, when you want to build off of another user's perspective. in which case, you address them as normal. some people credit taggers, some people don't. crediting tends to occur in discussions.
when making an original post, do not use irrelevant tags for Exposure. this is Greatly Hated by the userbase and is also against the TOS. you will get blocked at best, reported or yelled at at worst. only add relevant tags, and do not go overboard.
reposting other people's artwork is highly discouraged and is considered the Highest Offense. if you do any sort of reposting, you should credit and link to a creator directly. however, tumblr loves reposted videos, especially ones from tiktok. there are entire accounts dedicated to posting those.
sideblogs! it is possible to have multiple blogs under one email address. tumblr treats these blogs as proxies of your main blog. this means that sending someone an ask/commenting in the replies of a post will always appear with the name of your main blog, your likes will appear with the name of your main blog, and that if you follow someone you will appear on their followers list as your main blog (so you may be mutuals with someone and not even know it because their sideblog interacts with you, but isn't on your follower's list... because their main blog is listed there instead.) however, DMs DO appear as the sideblog name. you cannot swap your main blog with your sideblog. and right now, there is a bug where deleting a sideblog will delete your entire tumblr account so. don't do that lol. anyway, the amount of sideblogs you can make is literally infinite and i think there's just a Daily Limit of creating 10 of them or something. some users make a sideblog for each interest they have. others have no sideblogs and reblog everything to main. and then you have people like me that do both. somehow. some users will make sideblogs to hoard URLs. also sorry i'm just introducing this now, but that is what our usernames are called. because when tumblr was more desktop-oriented, every blog was literally a Personal Website. so ya. we call them "URLs." anyway, if someone wants to hang onto a URL for later, they might save it on an empty blog. this usually pisses people off. a "canon URL" is when someone has a URL that is like One Word or a Company Name or a Fictional character. hypothetical examples: "ketchup" "burgerking" "lukeskywalker." these are highly rare, coveted, and you look cool as hell if you have one.
tumblr's /\/SFW policy (/\/ is an N. i've censored it.) is best described as ???. posts that are safe for work get marked as /\/SFW and hardcore p0rn somehow persists. in general, be very wary of posting even artistic nvdity (even though it is supposedly permitted.) never deliberately mark your own posts as Mature. this is essentially like walking directly into a bear trap and waving a big sign at tumblr staff saying "hey! make it so people can't find my blog and i'm far more likely to get banned!" also do not tag posts with "/\/SFW." too many of those will get your entire blog marked as mature (which makes your posts pretty much invisible to other users.) tumblr users used /\/SFT (/\/ot safe for tumblr) for a long time, but staff caught on. there is now no consensus and people use their own personal tags for it. just pick something and people will catch on and blacklist it if need be. (btw you CAN type whatever you want on this website. i am only censoring in the hopes that this will allow my post to appear in the tags. this isn't tiktok lol)
while it is possible to disable reblogs on a post, this is a very RECENT addition and most users forget it exists. as such, please use common sense. if someone has written a post about, say, how sad they are feeling because they got in a fight with their family... that's not a good post to reblog. a like would be better here, like a pat on the back.
we LOVE polls. we love them. they are like sports to us. most of them are popularity polls - who is the better character? but people also use polls for, say, making bug emojis "race" each other. or "lets build a cake." other people use polls to write poetry, or learn about regional differences, or even to draw a pen!s. if you tag a poll as "poll" it will most likely be seen and voted in, because users look in the tag to find buttons to click.
there is unfortunately a T3RF (this one censored specifically to protect my notifs lmao. 3 is E) presence here. report, block, ignore, move on. common courtesy for users to inform each other if one is accidentally reblogged from. it also helps to blacklist tags related to them to avoid them. use shinigam! eyes browser extension on desktop.
there is NO equivalent to reddit awards on this website. as the userbase hates the staff, it is considered blasphemous to spend your money on checkmarks, etc. - buying them as a gift for another user is seen as a hostile act. it's like receiving a "kick-me" sign. once owned, badges cannot be deleted. thankfully, tumblr now allows you to disable checkmarks and other badges from appearing publically. that said, some users also give checkmarks unironically to show appreciation??? and others buy checks for themselves???? so yeah. tumblr doesnt actually have a verification system - these exist to mock twitter and to make a quick buck.
tumblr blaze. essentially, tumblr has a system in place to showcase user posts instead of advertisements sometimes. this is done by the user paying money. the higher the amount, the more impressions. tumblr users can now also blaze OTHER PEOPLE'S POSTS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BLAZE DISABLED!!! blazing another person's post (without asking first) is seen as a hostile act. why? because most blazed posts result in rude comments from strangers who are annoyed to see the post on their dashboard. unless it's like, a cute picture of a cat. or something genuinely helpful. boosting your soundcloud or a selfie or a rant about fandom does not typically garner positive responses. you can blaze just like. watch out. and also always ask the OP if you want to blaze someone else's post. (there is a reason this feature is called "blaze pvp")
tumblr merch is also frowned upon, as tumblr staff steals ideas from the userbase and profits off of them without financially compensating or crediting the users. there was a meme on here, "vanilla extract", that tumblr turned into water bottles while the person who made the meme was having to fundraise to survive :(
BLOCK. LIBERALLY.
umm i think thats it for now. but like if you have questions feel free to launch them into The Void with some tags and users are pretty quick to help out! hopefully i covered some stuff that other ppl haven't

honestly as an artist it's so DAMNED annoying here sometimes. I'm trying to post some sketches, but they just won't show up on the dashboard. not just hidden from search - i'm used to that: as soon as i add more than 6 tags it will be hidden from search for probably very important reasons(tm). no, it won't even show up on your (or my) dash. but at least i know what the reason there is. but with this? it's not spicy or anything. I have no idea what the issue is.
its so frustrating.
all of it just reduces visibility even more, with the messed up search that excessively promotes already super popular posts while completely burying everything else, 90% of users using this site like damned instagram and reblogging literally nothing anymore (please, i BEG you - if you like someones fanfic, art, photos or funny post: use the reblog button! i see soooo many completely empty blogs. this isnt instagram. reblog things. SHARE THE STUFF YOU LIKE) and all the technical issues it's sometimes just so tiring.
and tumblr doesnt fix anything. they try to tiktok-ify their website, and push thei live feature instead of fixing the search, the tags, the everything.
sorry for the bitching, i've just had a few super annyoing days (months) at work and when my fun little hobby is getting blocked like this i'm cranky

this is definitely not a dig at you Ciara, it's just something I have to let it out because it's driving me up to walls..what is this fandom's, I am gonna say unnecessary, coolness towards the show? I truly don't get it why they won't let people to be angry about anything happening on the show? If someone says something, people are jumping on each other's throats by posting some condescending shit. like? the couch theory shouldn't end like that. It doesn't make sense when you consider the progress buck had in this season but apparently we are not allowed to have opinions because then some popular blog will post something degrading our opinions by using 'jokes' and their mutuals gonna join and make us feel like shit. I get that they are calm and collected but who gives them to right to mock other people's opinions? I am sorry I'm doing this in here like this. It's been bothering me for awhile now and I just wanted to let it out. I'm sorry and thank you
mm i get where you're coming from! i think the fandom in general can tend to veer quite strongly in opposite directions when it comes to stuff that happens on the show. some people will immediately catastrophise and act like the show has royally fucked us all over bc of one scene when the season (or in this case, the show itself) isn't over. and then on the other hand - and maybe in response to that - other people can tend to jump through hoops to explain away and rationalise every single decision the show makes.
to be honest, i'm not a fan of either option. i think it's actually really important to be able to just say 'i personally don't like this storyline' and not need a deeper meaning for it???? like for me, as far as the couch theory is concerned, i'm not happy with where it ended up in 6x18. even removing buddie from the equation and just speaking as someone who's very dedicated to buck's seasons-long romantic arc and quest for genuine love, i'm not happy. it's not satisfying to me. it's nothing to do with natalia. i don't know enough about natalia to have an opinion and like. that's the problem??? it's a disservice to the work that's been put into arc not just in s6 but also everything since s2. and sure maybe it's bc they thought the show might end so they wanted to wrap it up. and sure they'll probably walk it back in s7. doesn't matter. i don't like it.
and that's fine!!!!! i'll write my own version if it bothers me that much (though tbh real life is so busy right now i can't spare much headspace for all of this lmao) i've watched a million shows that have made decisions i don't agree with. the fact that that's quite a rare occurrence with 911 is actually an anomaly in and of itself aksdjfh.
i'm not in the business of putting down other blogs and i would imagine a lot of the people you're referring to get far more asks than they ever actually answer that are extremely negative (and potentially see more negativity on their dashboard too if they follow a broad range of people??). and so as a result, maybe they make posts that feel dismissive bc they're fed up of that reaction??? having said that, you're absolutely entitled to feel what you feel and shouldn't feel guilty for expressing that on your own blog.
overall though i think we'd all fair a lot better if we just tag our shit so people can blacklist as necessary and let ourselves not like things sometimes?????????? none of us need an explanation, just saying 'this isn't where i thought this storyline would end up and i'm disappointed' is more than enough. and from my own experience, allowing myself to have thoughts like that and sitting with them for a sec before reading/writing some fic is usually all i need to feel better in the end!

Tag Blacklisting
I see posts sometimes about the importance of tagging, mainly because of how it lets people filter out content they don't want. Which I agree with! However, it relies on people tagging and blocking tags consistently, which... probably isn't ever going to happen. SO. What can you do, if you need to block certain content but it's not tagged consistently?
🌟New XKit Blacklisting🌟
XKit lets you hide posts based on the contents of the post, not just the contents of the post's tags.
Install this xkit extension:
Tumblr media
find it in the menu:
Tumblr media
And for this example, we're blocking any posts that mention Goncharov:
Tumblr media
Note that you can also whitelist words, which means that any posts that would be filtered by it won't be. For example, if I added the word "gay" to the whitelist, then posts about goncharov would only show up IF and ONLY IF they also contain the word "gay" somewhere in the post- This can include the body, tags, or even usernames. Other things you can do:
-Block the username of someone you follow, but add the tags of theirs you like to the whitelist. So if an artist you want to follow tags all their stuff "my art", you can blacklist their username but whitelist the tag, and the only posts by (or mentioning) that user that will show up on your dashboard are posts that say "my art" in a tag or text.
-Toggle between hiding a post behind a warning, and hiding it entirely.
-Exclude your own posts from the filter. (I will still be able to see this post, despite it talking about goncharov!)
-Exclude posts you've liked or replied to from the filter
-Toggle using blog titles / usernames for filtering

So, time for a bit more writing, although this will be a bit different.
This is more of a theory. Specifically, for Persona 5.
I will be mentioning Palaces that are late in the game, but that's why there are spoiler tags. I will also say that this is a long post, so if it's on your dashboard and you don't wanna read it, just hit J to skip to the next post.
So, here's the basic theory...
I think Sae Niijama's Palace forms far later than the others.
I'm basing this one a few things.
A. Only Akechi really noticed (or pretended to care) the difference in her behaviour B. She still seems to care about other people, especially Makoto C. The appearance of 'people' in her Palace.
So, let's go though this step by step. C will be the longest one.
So, we'll start with A. Akechi was the only one who really noticed the different in Sae's behaviour. Not even Makoto thought her sister's behaviour was much different from normal, her worries being about what Sae was doing would mean for her and the other Phantom Thieves rather than what her sister was actually doing.
Keep in mind Akechi knows about the cognitive world, and likely had some knowledge of Shido's plan, since he was one of Shido's best assets.
So it was likely part of Shido's plan to put all the pressure for catching the Phantom Thieves onto Sae, to help cultivate a Palace. It's not that simple, though. It's not like Palaces are Prisons from Scramble, you can't just take someone and make them the ruler of it, as they did with Zenkichi's daughter.
So they kept piling the pressure on Sae, making it so Sae's main thought would be 'I have to win this'... resulting in a Palace, with a gambling theme. Although the theme isn't entirely down to the plan, Makoto wasn't surprised by the appearance of the Palace, more the Palace itself. But, the appearance of it wasn't necessary, just that she had one.
Since Makoto didn't notice a significant change in her personality or demeanour that would point towards a Palace for her, I'd say it must be recent. Akechi noticed, because he was specifically looking for it.
B. She still seems to care about other people
This is more earlier, but the thing is, a Palace does not pop up overnight. While putting pressure on Sae to catch the Phantom Thieves would have helped cultivate a Palace, I doubt it would work to give someone a Palace if they wouldn't have one.
Like, the pressure was feeding a seed, but it wouldn't have worked if a seed wasn't there to begin with. And no, I'm not saying Sae is a bad person, keep in mind that Futaba had a palace. And while I won't be talking about him in this theory, because it's not that relevant since he's a special case, Maruki also wasn't a bad person.
In any case, we are shown that Sae does still care about Makoto. She snaps at her sometimes, but is not that cruel to Makoto, and certainly not abusive. She cares about Makoto, wants her to get a good education so she can succeed.
Let's look at some of the other Palace rulers, here.
Kamoshida was abusing the members of the Volleyball team. Physically, and, in the case of some of the girls, sexually. While they never outright say 'rape', I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of it as well, although I do think it would have been mentioned more outright if it was, and that Kamoshida would have confessed to it when his heart was changed. He didn't care about anyone other than himself.
Madarame used his students to profit off their art. He did a pretty good show of pretending to care for them, kept them fed, but this was all so he could profit off them. We know that when one student rebelled, they got completely blacklisted in the art world. Madarame only cared about himself.
Kaneshiro... you don't get to be the boss of a mafia like he was the boss of by caring for other people, or by being nice. He was also blackmailing children, and forcing girls into sex work if they could not pay. Even the one person he might have 'cared' for, the main point of giving her money was to blackmail Makoto and the others for the money that'd fill that gap. He didn't care about anyone other than himself.
Futaba... is a special case. She did care about other people, although by the time we see that, the only people she cares about are her mother (despite the view of her mother having been twisted and distorted by the fake suicide note) and Sojiro, bugging Leblanc in order to keep an eye on him.
Okumura very clearly did not care about anyone other than himself. This'll be mentioned in the next bit as well, but all the cognitive beings in his palace were robots. Even Sugimura and Haru were robots. And those who broke down were simply discarded. He didn't care for anyone.
Shido... the only people he 'cared' about were those who he could profit from knowing. And that was more like a business transaction, offering them a place of power when he became Prime Minister, in return for them helping him to reach that position. He definitely didn't care about any of them, a lot of the people he had Akechi kill were people who got too big for their boots. I think he mentions that he wouldn't have had Okumura killed if Okumura hadn't wanted to make the move into politics. He didn't care for anyone.
Sae, however, does still care about Makoto, at the very least. That does say something, since Okumura didn't care about Haru as a daughter. He only used her as an item, an offering to another family.
And now we come onto point C. The appearance of people in her palace.
I will admit this one isn't quite as clear cut a difference as with others, but bear with me here.
The appearance of cognitive beings in someone's palace tells you a lot about the ruler's opinion on people in general. As well as what is happening to them.
In Kamoshida's Palace, all the cognitive beings were the members of the volleyball team. The males were being abused, but the females were being... sexualised. We see shadows of the girls basically nude, and we also see Ann and Shiho in bikinis. They are to be abused, whether physically or sexually, although he's managed to convince himself that the girls WANT it.
In Madarame's palace, there are two sorts of cognitive beings. We have people lining up to go into the gallery/museum, customers who are to there to give him money. And we have his former students, all paintings. Items in his gallery. His works of art.
In Kaneshiro's palace, there are also two sorts of cognitive beings. We have guards and cronies, who work for him. And we have the people he is blackmailing, who are walking ATMs. Sources of money, until they break down and become useless to him.
Futaba's palace is a special case. There aren't really any cognitive beings there, other than the Cognitive Wakaba, who is a giant monster who hurls abusive lies at her daughter when she shows up, and says that Futaba belongs to her. Once that one is taken out though, a Wakaba who is more like how Wakaba actually was appears. As we've mentioned though, Futaba is a special case. Futaba's distorted desire of wrath was directed at herself, she was the victim of her own desires, rather than other people.
It is also notable that Futaba's Shadow is not intentionally hostile to you. She does want to help you, she wants you to free Futaba from her pain. But her trauma and other issues get in the way, since Futaba puts up walls to stop people from hurting her.
Okumura, as we've mentioned, the cognitive beings in his palace are all robots. Even Sugimura, who appears to be human at first, turns into a robot before you fight him. For him, people are to be used.
Shido, all of the people there ARE people, but they're also all under his thumb, and all of them compliment him a LOT. He's deluded himself into thinking they all love him and they all need him. When there are probably a bunch of them who do not like him at all, but can see the profit in helping him. Like, keep in mind Akechi, the cogntive version of Akechi was a loyal killer, whereas the real Akechi was planning on betraying Shido.
And then we get to Sae.
All the cognitive beings in her palace ARE people. While you could say that the games are rigged, and that she is simply profiting from them, keep in mind how casinos works. The games are rigged, but it is still possible to win at them. She hasn't quite gotten to the point of other Palace rulers where she simply profits from absolutely everyone, otherwise when you start winning, security would be on you immediately to beat you up and take the coins you earn, and there would be no-one on the higher member levels. She does try to cheat you near the end, by jacking up the price required to reach her, but that's more of a self defence thing. Think about it, wouldn't you do the same in that situation if you knew that a group was on their way to possibly kill you?
All of this adds up to me thinking that Sae's Palace is relatively new compared to the others. Otherwise Makoto would have noticed a more pronounced difference.
As for how long I think the others had their palaces, just as a bonus...
Kamoshida probably had his before he started at Shujin, from an over inflated ego related to his gold medal. He definitely had it when he broke Ryuji's leg.
Madarame probably had his palace for a LONG time. Considering how many students there are pictures of, and how old Madarame himself is, I would estimate at least 2 decades, and that's me lowballing it.
Edit: I was reminded by the lovely @auncyen that Madarame's 'descent' started with the Sayuri, and Yusuke's mother. Yusuke was three when his mother died, and he is, I believe, the same age as Joker, Ryuji and Ann in Persona 5, which places him around 16-17, so this would have started about 13-14 years ago. With me having been reminded me of all this, I will re-estimate Madarama's palace to having appeared somewhere between 12-13 years ago. While what Madarame did was absolutely terrible, it would still take time for his Palace to form, I think. Although the Sayuri was, of course, a huge part of it, hence it being the Palace's treasure.
Kaneshiro probably had his Palace when he started in the mafia. One of the things about his Palace is that he frets about getting money, otherwise he'd be worthless, which is more something I'd think someone lower on the ladder would be thinking. But considering how he acts in the real world, blowing 3 million like it's nothing, I think he's in charge. Might have someone he answers to, but he's definitely very near the top of the ladder.
Futaba's is a bit easier to guess. We know that Wakaba died about two years before the events of Persona 5, and that a lot of her issues stem from seeing her mother die, and the fake suicide note. I do not think it would have sprung instantly from her mother's death, and that a Palace likely requires time to develop. So it would be less than 2 years old, but definitely more than 1 year old, and I'd wager close to the two year mark.
Okumura... it has been stated that he was not always the way he was. But somewhere along the way, he changed. I imagine he would have changed sometime after taking charge of the company, maybe a little before. I would assume his palace has been around for a decade. It is notable that his move into the political world involved 'leaving' his palace behind, at which point I imagine the palace would have actually changed to reflect his new goal.
Shido... it's hard to know, honestly. I can't remember if we learn much about his backstory, other a little about his history in politics. He definitely had it when Ren encounters him before the events of Persona 5, and had had it for quite a while. Something tells me that he hasn't had it as long as Madarame or Okumura, though. I'd probably lowball it at 5 years, but it's likely closer to a decade, although, as I said, maybe not as long as Okumura, and definitely not as long as Madarame. We know that the metal shutdowns have been going on for two years, so the MINIMUM, it would be 2 years. Because it'd be a bit fucked up to find out about the cognitive world, and then immediately go "this'd be good for killing people!"
But yes, I think Sae Niijama's palace is the most recent one. Thank you if you've read to the end of my rambling.

pre-note: i'm not interested in complaining or insisting that this website shouldn't change. i want tumblr to be profitable and to grow, and that's going to involve changing things so more people will use it and understand it. i have been using this website since 2011, i recommend joining/rejoining tumblr to my friends whenever i can, and i've even bought socks and a mousepad from the shop LMAO. i have some genuine advice and things to consider that could help tumblr and i am offering all of this for free with no expectation of return.
~
i truly believe that if @staff @changes fixed the "because you follow #tag" feature, it would solve a lot of the issues that new users have when coming to the site.
currently, this feature:
- puts a disproportionately low number of posts from followed tags on the dashboard
- repeats the same posts over and over instead of providing new content from the tag.
these can be fixed by:
- instituting a % value for how much of the dash is from the followed tags. i would suggest that this percentage is higher if you follow very few blogs, and lowers as you follow more individuals. for someone like me who follows 400 blogs, i think as many as 1 in 15 posts could be from a followed tag.
it is important that this is not algorithm based. users only see posts from the tags they follow. i would hope that you've gathered how anti-algorithm your current userbase is. please do not alienate us.
as a middle ground on that issue, i would suggest adding suggested tags to the menu of suggested blogs that appears on the right side of the dash. that suggested blogs feature is one of the best changes this site has seen IMO, and has really helped me find more people to follow. implementing the same this for tags will get more eyes on more blogs and increase time on the site.
encouraging users to follow tags (or "join communities" if you want a fresh coat of paint) and actually putting a variety of posts from those tags on the dashboard would improve the experience for creators and get more eyes on their work without tumblr having to guess what a user is interested in.
- not showing the user multiple copies of the same post if it is from a followed tag.
i recommend keeping the presence of duplicate posts from individual blogs for multiple reasons. 1: a post fundamentally changes as more people add tags, replies, and reblogs; if the post disappears into the void after you see it once, you won't see any of this beautiful creativity and community discussion. 2: spam reblogging is funny sometimes. 3: if it's been a long time since you've seen a post, it can be fun to see it creep up again.
the key is that this repetition is because a human person liked the post enough to reblog it again.
~
it is ESSENTIAL that users do NOT see content that they did not ask for on their dashboards.
yes, algorithmic suggestion is a feature on other social media sites. even on those sites, the users complain about this and ask others for ways to turn it off and view a chronological following feed. i have personally seen this on twitter and reddit. this will be much worse with the current tumblr userbase, who is hostile to algorithms.
~
i have more thoughts on this matter but didn't want to join the flame war. on the low low low chance that someone from staff sees this my DMs are open for free consultation from a long time average user

9 people you want to know better
Thanks for tagging me, @jimikii
last song I listened to: I MISS YOU megamix by adamusic, it's a fun mashup of pop songs
currently watching: I'm finally watching Gundam Witch From Mercury! I did watch the prologue and first episode when it started airing, and enjoyed them, but I fell behind since I didn't really have time to watch TV regularly at the time. Now that its dubbed, its a bit easier for me to watch and regularly pay attention to. The animation and character designs are very pretty, and I like what's been set up for story threads so far (I'm only five episodes in at the time of writing)
currently reading: I'm rereading The Summer List by Amy Mason Doan, which I picked up on a whim a few years ago. Plot wise, it's about two women in their 30s reuniting after a lot of stuff happened at the end of high school that caused them to drift apart despite being best friends. Thematically its about characters feeling like the odd one out, bonds of friendship, and the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters. The prose is strong and efficient, its characters feel like normal people who aren't painted in broad strokes, the drama is grounded in how sometimes sad things just happen and we don't know how to deal with it the best way. It's a good contemporary story, especially for something I picked up in a pharmacy's bargain bin.
current obsession: Case Study of Vanitas is still bouncing around in my head at all times, even if outwardly it doesn't seem like that at all. And now that we live in a time where companies will just remove their own content from streaming services and digital storefronts, I'm desperate to get physical copies or backups of every show and movie I've ever liked. It's expensive, but at least my copies will always be mine and won't arbitrarily disappear.
Going by who appears on my dashboard, I'm tagging @talesofsymphoniac @ikuhara @yutaan @houkagokappa @pocketseizure @adelle-ein @cheriafreya @hyliansheik @mewnia

Hello, artist here; the reason i dont like the whole reblog art argument it's because sometimes... you just don't want to reblog it. Either your blog is themed and it wouldn't fit, or you just don't like the piece that much, or whatever.
Besides i don't think a reblog without tags or comments from someone with 0 followers does much for the artist at all, it's the equivalent of giving 2 likes; and btw likes ARE helpful too. I keep seeing the argument that this isn't like twitter or instagram, but when you search a tag the top posts are the ones with the most amount of notes (notes, not reblogs). Therefore a post with 200 likes and 10 reblogs is going to reach more people through tags than a post with 100 likes and 100 reblogs.
I think this whole argument is based around doing numbers, and people forget that a like is a person out there who /likes/ your art. Isn't the point of posting art to share it with someone who will like it? but if they show you they like it by giving it just a like, that's bad?
For me it's come to a point where i won't even give a like bc if i give a like i'll feel obliged to reblog it, and i think it might be this way for more people, which is worse.
Now don't get me wrong, i love reblogs. I love reading tags and comments and it does motivate me to keep posting. This isn't an argument against reblogs at all. I simply don't think we should pressure people into reblogging art that they don't want to.
Hi! Thanks for sharing your point of view! I'm not sure how to start in answering this ask so I guess I’ll answer you point by point.
sometimes… you just don't want to reblog it. Either your blog is themed and it wouldn't fit
This is an argument I've heard many times and one I have also seen being responded to many times. The simple solution here is that you make a sideblog for which the art would fit. For example, I have many sideblogs that wouldn't "fit" on this one, like an aesthetic blog, a purely shitpost blog or a miscellaneous blog (this one is mostly for mass reblogs) and it seems this could be the solution to this problem, too. It doesn't cost you anything but may give a lot of artists the exposure that they want. It's pretty much a win-win situation. You get to experience awesome fanworks AND the art is exposed to more people.
but for this one...
or you just don't like the piece that much, or whatever.
I am feeling a little hurt by this frankly, and as much as I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, it also sounds... quite entitled? If you like it enough to give it a heart, surely you like it enough to reblog, otherwise why like it at all?
Now you also mention this:
Besides i don't think a reblog without tags or comments from someone with 0 followers does much for the artist at all, it's the equivalent of giving 2 likes; and btw likes ARE helpful too. I keep seeing the argument that this isn't like twitter or instagram, but when you search a tag the top posts are the ones with the most amount of notes (notes, not reblogs). Therefore a post with 200 likes and 10 reblogs is going to reach more people through tags than a post with 100 likes and 100 reblogs.
to which I have to say that this is simply not true. I don't know if you are new here on tumblr, and if you are I can't fault you for not knowing the way the algorithm works here, so I will tell you. Yes, likes do contribute something to the algorithm but not nearly as much as reblogs do. People on tumblr spend most of their time on their dashboard, which is made up entirely of what other people reblog. Does that make sense? 70-80% of the reblogs that artists, gif-makers and writers receive are second-hand. This means that most of the reblogs that we get are NOT directly reblogged from our blog. They are reblogged from other users who have reblogged their creation. Sure, the likes may keep your post at the top of the tag, but only for a couple of days. For a piece of art to receive continuous engagement and potential new followers it has to circulate. This is why the reblog button is two arrows instead of one, because it takes at least two to share a post. You, the reblogged, and the person you reblogged it from. So no, 100 reblogs and 100 likes does so much more for the artist than 10 reblogs and 200 likes, because it’s shown to more people, and has a higher potential of being shown to even more people from there.
Rather than keeping the art in your basement where no one will see it, why not put it in the living room, where everyone who visits may gaze upon it? After all we don’t keep DaVinci’s artworks in a dark cellar now do we? By sharing art by reblogs, we provide artists the exposure from which many build their livelihood.
Which brings me to my next point:
I think this whole argument is based around doing numbers, and people forget that a like is a person out there who /likes/ your art. Isn't the point of posting art to share it with someone who will like it? but if they show you they like it by giving it just a like, that's bad?
You seem to work under the assumption that many of the artists that share their works online do so merely for an ego boost or a self-pat on the back. This is not entirely true, although it may be for some (for example me, I won’t deny it). Actually, most of the artists I know and follow use their art to provide for themselves. it is a job, an income, which relies on the amount of customers they get. Reblogs give them exposure and exposure gives them opportunities. In fact, probably some of the most famous internet artists today are working real life jobs in the art industry, whether that’s animation, graphic design, concept art, book covers, what have you!
Off the top of my head here are a few:
Alice Oseman (yes, she started right here on tumblr) has just had her graphic novels adapted into a Netflix series. You may have heard of it, it’s called Heartstopper and only trended on tumblr like a bajillion times.
Viria was contracted by famous writer Rick Riordan to provide official character portraits to his books after her fanarts back in 2013-14 blew up and which she became famous from right here on tumblr.
Velinxi, the artist also currently known for her Percy Jackson fanart, has released graphic novels of her own, some of which I found in bookstores right in my town!
Loish is a world renowned artist who has been partnering with several art companies, one of which is Wacom, the leading brand in providing digital artists with graphic tablets, but this she never would have achieved if people hadn’t shared her art.
And there’s more. Cyarin, Piccolo, Ikimaru and many many more. All of these insanely famous artists started on the internet where people shared their art. Reblogs, exposure, follower count and notes open doors for people career wise and it is not shameful to chase after that or to ask for a simple reblog by the click of a button after having provided something for a wide audience for free. Digital artists today are even taught how to have a social media presence in their art schools. My friend who studies game design told me how they have a whole class project on building up your own Artstation account, because the industry has moved more progressively online than ever before and a simple printed out CV is just not impressive anymore.
And that's not all. I've also seen artists do commissions to pay medical bills or rent or other bills they have to take care of. For a lot of people art commissions are their last resort to get some semblance of stability.
And also I would like to point out this contradiction:
Isn't the point of posting art to share it with someone who will like it? but if they show you they like it by giving it just a like, that's bad?
So you get it… but you don’t get it? Yes, posting art is exactly that, it is sharing it. And you do that by reblogging it. A reblog is a share. A Like is a bookmark. When you buy a painting, you don't keep it in the basement with a linen over it. You hang it on your living room wall! Can you imagine if museums just kept all of Van Gogh's and Rembrandts and Mucha's paintings in their dark dark cellar where it will never see the day? What do we go to museums for then? Can you imagine if the library kept their vast collection of knowledge locked in a vault? What do we go to the library for?
Common curtesy on tumblr is to reblog whatever you like, which is another indicator which makes me think you might be new (or well newish at least) to tumblr. Actually there’s another post that circulated which showed that this ratio problem is fairly recent and that back in 2012-2016 the ratio usually favored the reblogs. Because this is the etiquette of tumblr. *squidward voice* We reblog stuff here, sir.
No one wants to follow an empty blog. Hell, I haven't posted any art the last two months and i still get new followers because they like my reblogs. I've had several asks tell me that they like the stuff I reblog and think it's interesting or that I provide them with posts they may otherwise never have seen.
Again, why keep DaVinci in the basement, when he could decorate your living room wall so beautifully?
Reblog art. Reblog art. Reblog art. If you want to keep consuming fanart and Fan edits and fanficitons, reblog it. support your fandom artists.

no one is reblogging my posts on here 😔 what am I doing wrong?!
Hi Nonnie!
There could be several issues here.
The first 'big' issue right now is that it's summer for a significant part of fandom. People are occupied with trips, family & friends, and more. They have less time to spend online. Since they aren't online, they likely aren't seeing your posts.
Another problem is that, compared to the start of the pandemic, there are less active people in fandom and the people who are active have less time. People are back at work, have more social obligations again, and could also be doing other hobbies that got put on hold during lockdowns. Like with the summer problem, if people aren't online to see your post they aren't going to reblog it. It isn't personal, they just aren't online right now.
These first two issues are obviously something you can't control but it's helpful to know. Now I will mention some things you do have control over:
You might be posting at the wrong time. There tends to be a sweet spot of when the most people see and share your posts. You can look at the activity on Tumblr and see during which hours of the day most people reblog from you: that's a good time to post. If you are asleep then you can use your queue!
Another thing you can control is making your post stand out. You can add an image to your post, that usually grabs people's attention. You can also do some reblogs yourself so it's on people's dashboard more often (don't do this 15 times in an hour, but a couple times per day is more than fine).
If you post fics/long text posts directly onto Tumblr and don't use a 'read more' cut, that might be a reason people don't reblog. Long posts tend to take over someone's entire dashboard, especially on the app and that can be really frustrating. If people are frustrated, they are less likely to share your post. Consider a read more cut for long posts!
Something that can also be an issue is that you haven't put in enough effort. This sounds a little harsh but I will explain what I mean by this. Sometimes people show up in fandom with very high expectations. They post their first work and think everyone will immediately love and share it while they haven't made an effort to be part of their community yet. If you never reblog or comment on someone else's works, or if you only share posts from a select group of people (people who are already popular, for example) then others are going to feel less inclined to share your works (if they even notice your posts at all).
Liking, sharing, and commenting on other people's fic/posts is not the only way to get people to read/share your fic (and you shouldn't do this just so people will share your fic) but it's a good way to become part of a community and to get people to know you are here.
If you share fandom things often enough, others will share your works too.
Lastly, there could also be an issue with your tags and Tumblr's algorithm. The right tags bring your audience to you; the ship name or the character name, the fandom and the tropes, etc. Tag all of thsoe! Some ships have multiple name tags. Use more than one!
Other tags may work against you, such as tags Tumblr has banned for being NSFW. Having no tags at all is doesn't get around this because it means new people won't see your works, but try to work around NSFW tags that Tumblr hides.
Please also bear in mind that Tumblr hides/shadowbans posts its algorithm catches. Be aware of this and try to avoid getting caught out. Don't use NSFW images/gifs, and don't use external links use a Tumblr link instead, and avoid certain NSFW words. Use other similar words, or censor a word out if you can. Don't give Tumblr any excuse to hide your post.

Saw your post about where the TGM fandom is and if you're using Tumblr correctly.
I have been on this hellsite (affectionate) for twelve years now so let me share my hard earned knowledge with you:
The first thing you have to remember is that your main dashboard has absolutely NO algorithm. Tumblr does not fill your main dashboard with things it thinks you'll like, you have to find your own. Which means everything you see on your dash is totally dependent on who you follow and what they post and/or reblog. Because people will only see your stuff if a) they're following you b) someone they're following reblogs your stuff or c) they come across your stuff when searching through specific tags. Basically, unlike almost every other social media app/site, likes do absolutely NOTHING for engagement. In fact, most people use likes as a way to save something to read or look at later (that's I use them 99% of the time).
Now for tags, keep in mind that only the first 20 tags on a post are used by Tumblr to make your post searchable. Any tag after 20 is you just shouting into the void because Tumblr won't use those. Lots of people also use the tags to add their commentary on a post they're reblogging so as not to clutter up the original post. And lots of people also use the tags to just shout out their emotions and feels into the void as well.
Some people are extremely methodical and super organized when it comes to tagging their posts, while others either don't tag at all or tag randomly and haphazardly. It's also common for people to have a very specific tag for specific types of posts to make it easier for people to both search and/or block certain types of posts. Examples of those would be people having a specific tag for when a post is about their personal life or using a specific tag for posts that are just about writing or tagging all ask answers with a specific tag.
Also keep in mind that reblogs don't show up in tag searches, only original posts do. But it's still a good idea to tag anything you reblog since people can search your blog for specific tags. Another thing to remember about tags is that anyone can see what tags you use on a reblog (you can sort the notes on a post to show you just reblogs w/comments & tags).
And if you really like someones tags on a post you want to reblog, feel free to either copy them into your reblog or take a screenshot of them and post that to your reblog. Doing so is very common and seen as kind of a badge of honor on Tumblr that someone thought your tags were good enough/funny enough to make sure more people see them. Common things to add when doing so are phrases like "why are you hiding this perfection in the tags?" or "you can't just say that and hide it in the tags". It's also common courtesy to tag the person whose tags you're sharing.
It's also common courtesy that if you want to rant about something you don't like you either a) don't use it's tag or b) tag it as anti-X. For example, there is a ship or fandom you don't like and you decide to post a rant about it. Don't tag it "ship name/fandom" but instead tag it as "anti-ship name/anti-fandom". That way your negative post won't show up when people who do like the thing are searching that particular tag.
Tumblr also likes to be really weird sometimes and randomly hide posts from tags for no apparent reason. And since people from all over the world use Tumblr, sometimes you have to post things at different times of day for more people to see it. It's not uncommon to see someone reblogging their own post with a tag or comment that says something like "reblogging for the morning/evening crowd".
Just remember that for the most part Tumblr is a fun and unique corner of the internet. Hope all of this helps! ☺️
Oh wow this is a chunky one I feel like I need to take notes.
So I need to follow people I think are funny, tell people they're funny, show I'm funny, be nice and generally not a dick.
Shouldn't be too hard. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and cross my fingers??
Thank you so much for this lovely long tell, I cannot tell you how much it means to me!!

am I the only one on here who's a little annoyed by all these "hey Tumblr newbies, this place isn't like Twitter or whatever. pull up a chair and let me tell you how you're SUPPOSED to use this hellsite" posts? like yeah sure reblogging is great but y'all. I've been using this site since 2012 and in the entire past decade I have probably reblogged less than 100 posts total. it scares the shit out of me. I am forever haunted by the nagging fear of annoying my friends/followers, no matter how ridiculous I know that is. never in my LIFE have I felt the need to spam reblogs and keysmash in the tags. that's just ONE way to use the site, it's not THE way.
half the reason I find myself still coming back to Tumblr over and over is BECAUSE it's the one social media site where I can just relax and quietly consume that sweet sweet Content™ WITHOUT always being perceived and having every button I click be broadcast to the world via an algorithm. I like posts when I want the ppl involved to know I appreciated them and so I can find them later, and the posts I really like get DM'd directly to my friends who I think would enjoy them. I usually only reblog when I have something to actually add to the conversation, or when it's something made by a friend.
like I understand the sentiment and the good intentions here, but it's frankly a bit patronizing to see "Tumblr for babies" posts that claim people are using the site wrong if they don't hit the post limit on a regular basis and have a queue a mile long. sometimes people just want a less "social" social media and Tumblr is one of the only places where that's even an option anymore.
(though yes, if your intent IS specifically to boost a post's reach then you DO need to reblog it, cuz everyone generally uses the chronological dashboard mode on here and your likes won't show up on that. and it's also generally good to have an avatar and a few actual posts of some kind on your blog so folks don't think you're a bot)

rant vent whatever
I thought this was an ultra given, considering my record here when it comes to fanarting, and I'm 98% sure my followers already know what they sign up for when they follow me (It's because you people enjoy my stuff, right?) But I guess there's still randoms out there that are doomed to come across my stuff while checking tags and feel upset by how far fetched and dismissive of canon my shit is, and you know what? Absolutely fair! I also get upset when I see a headcanon that I feel is deeply wrong, but if that's the case, I just ignore/mute or at worst, block the user. I don't go after anybody telling them to make their own OCs since they can't stick to canon.
I'm not interested in sticking to canon, I wanna explore these characters and develop them in ways I feel are more true and interesting for them, and yes, if that means going full OoC, so be it, (and sometimes the canon for some characters is BLAND and underexplored af, missed potential and all that junk, y'know). And even ignoring all of that reasoning: I'm having fun and it's a big source of comfort for me to do this. I have OCs, I've made OCs in the past exactly for the reasons above, to see IF I could translate that huge inspiration a show gave me into something original of mine, but it didn't work. And because I know the way my brain works, it won't work, and I don't know when it will work and FINALLY make something truly original and of my own. Maybe someday, maybe never. I don't care for now.
I find admirable some people makes a huge effort to stay accurate to the actual characters, so they can draw/write/create their own stories whether it is within their canonical universe or an AU, you go, you keep at it!
But.
That's.
NOT.
For me.
And that's fucking okay. And if you're so upset by me going bonkers with your fave characters just mute and/or block. Filter my stuff the fuck out of your dashboard so you don't have to see my ugly stuff in the tags. Live happy knowing those are not the characters you love but just an innacurate portrayal of some random on the internet that is soooo wrong and knows nothing. But don't come into my asks telling me to make my own OCs, cause otherwise the one blocked will be you.

How to grow your blog - For Beginners!
Tumblr media
Since I receive quite a few messages about how I grew my blog and how others could improve theirs, I decided to do this post to help you with whatever knowledge I gathered throughout my time on here.
Disclaimer: These are only my personal observations, there's no proven success if used and they may differ in other people's case.
Things I will discuss below will include;
Interactions
Masterlists / Navigations
Tags
Taglists
Simplicity
So, I guess it's time for us to begin :)
Interactions
First and foremost, interactions are the most important elements of Tumblr. These can include asks/ comments/ reblogs/ reblogs with comments and any sort of interactions with other blogs.
Asks are important because while you're having fun and chatting away with people, your name shows up on their blog and their followers might be intrigued by your user name or what you said and they check out your blog.
Comments. When you read a fic or see a beautiful edit and leave a comment on that certain post, most of the time the creator will check out your profile and other people who leave comments might find you sweet and head to your blog as well. It's nothing deep with an underlying meaning. It's simple curiosity. If what you write is kind or relatable, people feel drawn to you.
Reblogs. Reblogs are one of the most important part of Tumblr. That's the only way your art can be spread. Sure, tags are important and helpful, but reblogs are the ones that keep your art alive. When you reblog a post you're essentially sharing someone else's content with 10, 100 or 1000 people without your knowledge.
Reblogs with comments are possibly the most important and significant part of this site. You don't just share someone else's art, you also add your positive comment to it, which draws people's attention. When you reblog someone else's art, they might check out your blog and they might reblog yours. Of course, it's not a rule nor should it be expected, but from my personal experiences, I have gained loads of followers through my mutuals. Their kind words and love for my fics have drawn quite a large traffic to my blog and vice versa.
Masterlists / Navigations
Many people will tell you that tags are enough and you don't need a Masterlist. I disagree. Whilst tags are good and useful, tumblr's tags aren't reliable and on top of that people can be quite lazy. The easiest way to showcase your art - whether it be fanfiction, fanart, gifs, drawings, video edits and such - is to basically offer them to your visitors/followers on a silver platter. It can be a bother at times, always keeping it up to date, but when people have to search for your content they get discouraged because let's be honest, we like things that are easily accessible.
Masterlists can be a single Tumblr post or a Google drive document where you add the link of your creations. In my Masterlist you can find different characters, organised by different fandoms. If you use Google drive make the document readable [but not editable] for the public.
Some people, such as myself, create Navigation posts, where they add relevant sub menus which help their followers navigate easier on their blogs. These can contain where to send "asks", "rules" that the owner of the blog might set, "blog recommendations", "side blogs", "about me" menus and the like.
Tags
Although I mentioned that tags can be unreliable, they're still a necessity. Search for relevant tags and use them when you post your art. Meanwhile reblogging is the easiest way to get your creations out there, people do regularly search for tags when they wish to see something and the only way they will find you is if your post appears in tags.
If you're not sure whether your tags are working, you can always head to your dashboard, click on the 👤 in the right upper corner, go down to the posts menu and look for the post you want to check on. Once you found it, click on the tag that you would like to search for. If it shows up in the recent tab of the search results, it means the tag is working, but if after 5 minutes of posting it's still not there, you might need to reupload your work. Unfortunately Tumblr has some issues with the tags and it takes two or even three attempts at times to upload something correctly, whilst other times it might work immediately.
On a side note, if you reblog nsfw content or triggering content, you might want to tag those appropriately. Tw food, tw blood, tw. etc. Depends on the content of the triggering post.
You can also create your own tags. Such as "XY's inbox" for your asks or "XY shares" for anything that you reblog from others. This way people can block those tags and see only those posts on your blog that they might find interesting.
Taglists
Taglists aren't a necessity, especially because there are many different ways to notify your followers of new creations, but it's certainly useful. The reason I think taglists are important is because tumblr won't always show your posts on everyone's dashboard, especially if they follow loads of people. However, when you use a taglist, and mention people on your newest posts, they will be able to get a notification of your update.
Of course, if you feel like tagging people might be bothersome, you might create a side-blog where you reblog your posts and people can turn on notifications to be notified of your updates. This option has been rather popular recently, because usually we reblog and post many things on our main blogs and people don't want to get notified about every trivial post, so a side-blog with the most important posts might just be it for you.
Simplicity
This might be confusing so let me be less vague. As I said, we can be rather lazy and that doesn't mean we're bad people, we might just had a difficult day or too much to study or work and we just want easy access to content. Being simple is a necessity. Though it's good to be creative and unique, such as creating a Masterlist that's called "Where the stars shine", it's not obvious for many what is hidden behind those words and they might not be curious enough to check it out. By being simple and obvious, as I said before, you're offering your content on a silver platter. Simple and neat. Sometimes people just need things to be easy to find.
I have been told many times before that my blog is very organised and I feel very proud about that because it means people can find things easily. Of course, it's not proven, but I think that could be a factor in growing your blog. But as I've said, these are only my personal observations.
I hope this helps. Have a nice day :) Heloise Daphne Brightmore

All due respect girlfriend, implement your own blocking/tagging system and then you won't be spoiled. You know you don't own fandoms. You and your crew don't dictate to the rest of us like you do in the obx community. Keep it to your clique 💩
i ... i'm not even sure where this is coming from nor do i get what obx has anything to do with it??? i'm not even really involved in the obx community on here, i'm more on the oc side of it like i'm just trying to vibe???? also don't really get the clique part of it lmao i interact with like a handful of people on here and i wouldn't really consider myself being in a clique i just have people i'm friends with???? like that's what people do on here???? make friends????
also, to respond to your comment i DO have a tagging/blocking system in place. for example with the new spider-man movie coming out i have everything from character names, to the movie title, to spoiler tags, to random acronyms blacklisted. the issue is that in the past i've done the exact same thing with other movies, shows, etc and things STILL end up on my dashboard because people sometimes post spoiler-y content without ANY form of tagging.
i personally think it's rude to go see something the first week it's out and expect everyone else to have done the same and post spoilers without any form of tagging. the people who can't consume that media right away WILL have tagging systems in place but it only works if people actually tag their stuff.
i never said i owned fandoms. i just would really love it if things i'm excited to see don't get spoiled for me the literal first day it comes out but maybe that's just me idk. if you don't like what i have to say, you could truly just like,,,unfollow me or scroll past, no hard feelings pal 🤷🏻‍♀️
