This photo was taken in Govan, Glasgow around 1950. Sitting in between my Granny Bridget (Bess) Coll and my cousin Margaret is my Grandfather Francis Coll. He was quite a man. A Donegal native who was loved and respected by all, because he deserved it. Decades after his death my father would still only speak of him in hushed tones of reverence. Telling me how his father had hands like shovels and he only ever called him Sir. I'm sad to say I never met my Grandfather, but I often think of him and like to ponder on what he might think of me. I made this mix while driving back from Standing Rock. I was sitting in the passenger seat using Traktor on the iPad. It was dawn somewhere in the Midwest and we were still utterly buzzing from our time at the camp. I feel the mix really captures the spirit of our journey and I'm happy to share it. I put some vocals on it back in Brooklyn with the help of the multitalented DeLaRoca, who also held down the driving all the way there and safely back!
Standing Rock was a very profound experience, which I'm still processing. This mix had helped, but the battle goes on...

When @de_la_r0ca was painting this banner on Flag Road at the Oceti Sakowin Camp you could sense her work might become somewhat iconic by the amount people stopping to take photographs. And...within a couple of days someone had made this beautiful composite with it and it had been posted by @vicmensa and many others. This ensured her banner was seen by millions of people right before the ACOE deadline, when the camp needed the most amount of support. This is on the ground and online art activism at its finest! For many, this is the true flag of America. Each quadrant of the medicine wheel, or sacred hoop, combines to symbolize all life on this land. It is an organic symbol that has evolved naturally in the collective consciousness of indigenous Americans. It represents us, all of us. For not only does the medicine wheel symbolize the four elements, the four seasons and the four directions, but it also symbolizes all people of the earth (red, yellow, black and white) coming together to live as one on this continent. Carrying that prophesy with it, the medicine wheel has existed for eons, calling us to unite around it and visualize healing, strength, peace and the love of one nation. On our last night at Standing Rock a group of us sat round our camp fire discussing, amongst many things, how the Stars and Stripes was made by force and can only be held together as such and, if you truly want to see peace on this land, we need a new flag. One that represents everybody. Almost immediately we began to visualize this flag as the medicine wheel.
