I work in a specialty vet hospital. My job is to go over incoming animals' medical records and condense them down into about a one-page format for the vet to look over before we do an initial consultation with the pets. We also have a short survey that the owners fill out with basics like what they eat, what meds/supplements they are on, etc.
The most important question on that survey to me is "Does your pet have any previous illness or injury?" Yes, I'm looking at their medical record, but it's pretty common that I will have the main record and the pet is also seeing another specialist for another problem....so the owner survey might mention something like pemphigus, which they are managing at a dermatology office whose records I don't have. This is SUPER important as we may need to change up their medication protocol.
Today, I was going over a survey where the owner had answered "No" to the illness/injury question. This was puzzling as I knew we had received records from an oncologist.
As I read over the records, I can see that the dog has an aggressive cancerous tumor in his left atrium, and the cardiologist he just saw has stated that he is at risk for cardiac rupture.
YOU DIDN'T THINK THIS WAS IMPORTANT TO TELL THE VET YOU ARE ASKING TO ANESTHETIZE YOUR DOG?!
*Deep breath* If I'm being charitable, I'm going to assume that the owners were deeply distressed by this fairly recent diagnosis and weren't thinking clearly when filling out the survey. But I was confused, to say the least.

Frogs and Bunny 5 week update: These kids are HUGE. Like....Frogs is almost at the minimum weight the shelter performs spays/neuters already! (He's not going to be put through surgery at 5 weeks old, he's just theoretically big enough.)
They're also more and more obviously long-haired kittens every day. Long ear tufties, smelly dingleberries, the works. No interest in eating food from a bowl yet, but they ARE both still latching, so that's a plus. The expected diarrhea has also reared its head, so we're headed back to the vet tomorrow.
My spouse says these kittens are just lemons, as they have been at the vet every week since their birth. I say they're getting all of their vet visits out of the way now so they can grow up big and robust!

I went for a hike with one of my favorite humans today and found this little darling sunning themselves on a popular trail. I decided to move them off the path as there were a LOT of bikes whizzing by, and they were so polite! No hissing, no musking, no bites!
@snake-spotted I thought you'd appreciate my new friend too!

I’m an effort to get Bedlam’s face NOT smelling exactly like her butt, we have done a clean face haircut with a silly Mohawk. I get a little jolt every time I see her…she has EYES!

Much to my joy and dismay, Frogs and Bunny have started to wean. This is great, as it means they are growing up. This also stinks, because it means that they…
1) Won’t latch on the bottle.
2) Don’t know how to eat from a bowl.
3) Like to play/roll/bathe in said bowl of food.
The next week or two will be smelly, frustrating, and stressful for me as I watch their weight and poops fluctuate as they learn how to eat and their bodies adjust to solid food. On the plus side, they started to use their litter box yesterday!
The last shelter I fostered for would let me send kittens back at this age so I could take in new neonates and skip weaning altogether, but I’m enjoying the satisfaction of seeing my kittens all the way through to adoptable age.

Frogs and Bunny are so happy to be reunited!! So far so good, I’ll be keeping a close eye on them.
Another fun update: today I’m going to start adding small amounts of canned food into their formula! The very beginning of weaning.

I found some foam board and made a divider to keep them apart for now. I hate keeping kittens alone, so I try to give them supervised together time multiple times a day, and I switch them after each meal so they always have their sibling’s scent. They’ll be in here until they’re about five weeks old, then I have a big dog crate and x-pen to upgrade into. (Their heads just have to get big enough that they can’t escape the crate!)

Frogs and Bunny update! They will be three weeks old on Wednesday, which is usually when I upgrade them to a larger enclosure….but Bunny suckles on her brother the moment I put them together and I only have one grow-out cage at the moment so I’m going to need to devise a divider for it until she outgrows that unfortunate habit.
Suckling each other at this age (she latches on to his…er…eggplant) can lead to severe inflammation that can prevent the victim from being able to urinate and can actually kill the kitten who is being suckled, so even though it’s kind of funny to say, I am taking it seriously.

My flower garden is in full swing!! Most of these are California natives and the bees have been out in force. I also have lots of CA poppies (the standard variety and some “moonglow” poppies that are yellow with orange centers.
Later in the season I’ll have Clarkia, which will last all summer. I freaking love my garden!

Pardon the mediocre photos, these guys are super wiggly. I just wanted to announce that Frogs and Bunny have officially survived week one of life!
Frogs has some serious ulceration on his lower lips, he saw the vet today and was put on two antibiotics and two painkillers as well as fluid support…I had to make myself a chart to keep track of once, twice, and thrice a day medications. It’s a lot for such a bitty little dude but he is so chunky and hungry and happy/purry, he deserves all the support I can give him.
Bunny still feels a bit thin/bony, but her weight is consistently going up and she’s starting to plump up a little. She won’t LATCH on the bottle per se, but if you tuck the nipple under her tongue she makes drinking motions and will swallow a full meal while I squeeze the bottle. I’ve been fostering since 2007 and I’ve never seen such goofy nursing behavior before, but it works so I can’t complain!
