i think that one of the reasons come from away has such a small fanbase is because all we have is what’s there.
all we can do is love and appreciate every last second of the show. because we can’t change it. the lyrics, the characters are not ours to touch. this show is rooted so deeply in a true story that touching even one little piece of it seems like sacrilege. sure, we can make edits. we can laugh at some of the lines, we can cry at others. personally, i could talk forever about some of the musical choices. but that’s all we can do.
come from away is a show rooted so deeply in a true story that it shouldn’t be touched. other shows are true stories, yes, but with much broader artistic liberties. hamilton, for example, is both true and not true. it’s a modern sort of adaptation.
come from away is the story of an event that changed the lives of people around the globe. a tragedy that occurred in this century, and so the people who play a vital role in its telling are still around to go see it.
for me, that’s the beauty of it. (well, that and just about everything else.) but changing the story isn’t right. there can’t be fanfictions or changes, or anything else.
it’s not our story to tell. it’s our story to love, and appreciate, and connect with.
My brain: on the northeast tip of north america, on an island called newfoundland, there’s an airport. it used to be one of the biggest airports in the world. and next to it is a town called gander.
Me: why now
My brain: welcome to the rock if you come from away
I teared up on the bus today because I listened to Me And The Sky (yes, I’ve heard it 92639248 times, yes it still makes me tear up) sooooo that’s how my day is going
Oooooh it is VERY likely to make you cry but I find it a really cathartic sort of crying— I tear up because it’s so much about human kindness. It’s not the September 11th stuff that makes me bawl but the lines in “Welcome to the Rock,” that go “when you’re hoping for a harbor then you’ll find an open door.”
I finally listened to some of "come from away" today and wow its amazing how had I not listened to it before?! (I was trying to also do work, and realised after about 20 minutes that no work was getting done, so I had to stop... but it just means I get to listen to the rest later!)
IT IS SO GOOD I LOVE IT and I am so glad I managed to get other people listening to it!!
The date 9/11/01 is not mentioned for the first 10 minutes of the show. If you go into it not knowing what it’s about, you spend the first 10 minutes trying to work out why the planes are landing & what the emergency is. This means u get the confusion & worry that the plane people feel for the opening of the show & really helps with setting the scene & understanding the worry - which is like hella smart
