In the weirdest “life comes a full circle” moment: I spent my undergrad reading Captain Marvel, grad school screaming at the movie, and now as a doctor, teaching a class about Captain Marvel, Kelly Sue, and the Carol Corps.

This is the very best use of my PhD.

The “generation gap” is an important social tool for any repressive society. If the younger members of a community view the older members as contemptible or suspect or excess, they will never be able to join hands and examine the living memories of the community, nor ask the all-important question, “Why?” This gives rise to a historical amnesia that keeps us working to reinvent the wheel every time we have to go to the store for bread.

Okay, I know I acted silly about this, but the fact that there is 1 singular year round roller skating rink in the city of Philadelphia home to 1.6 million people is kinda fucking horrifying when you think about the broader implications of it.

The relationship between shipping and fanfic is so much more than a binary choice between "niche ship where it's impossible to find anything" and "popular ship where it's impossible to find anything readable". There's also "niche ship that has thousands of fics because it's captured the imagination of an extremely specific kink subculture that you're not into at all", "popular ship whose writing community became established during an early hiatus and never incorporated any subsequent developments, instead diverging into an alternative canon that's unrecognisable to fans of the actual source material", "moderately well-represented ship where literally everything seems to have been written by a single impossibly prolific author whose grammatical quirks drive you up the wall", etc.

Fanfic printing and publishing survey!!!!!
Fanficcers of the world, I need your help!!!
Are you a fic author or reader who has either their own fic, or other author’s fic, printed, published and/or bound in book format??
If so, PLEASE can you fill out my survey???
It’s part of a small research study I’m doing into why we get  fic printed up all nice and pretty when reading fic on the internet is free and accessible to pretty much all and sundry.
The survey is pretty short and shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes, depending on how much you put into some of the answers.
I’d REALLY appreciate it!
Alas, I can no offer no rewards but my undying gratitude. And cookies.

A question I get asked a lot while working at a public library is "how do you deal with homeless people?"
And the answer is, we don't.
The unhoused people who come here seeking refuge 99% of the time understand that they will be kicked out if they misbehave.
The people you have to watch out for are Jessica, who only came because the kid she didn't want had to visit for a homework assignment and she just *needs* to yell at her child for asking to borrow two books or stay an extra five minutes, or Michael, who came in to look at porn on our computers for whatever fucking reason, or Karen who just wanted to come by to throw a fit that the particular book she wanted was checked out and harrass our staff about our collection being too limited.
99% of the time, the people we need to ban are middle to upper-middle class white people while the homeless and mentally ill/disabled people mind their own damn business and are honestly some of the best patrons we have.

(Fan) cultures have not traditionally work like media industries, since they have their own production dynamics, being much more a “shadow cultural economy” (Fiske, 1992); the constant search for alternative models of creation and circulation, as well as practices between consumerism and resistance are traits and conditions in the history of fan cultures (Hills, 2002). Fiske, J. (1992) The Cultural Economy of Fandom=L. A. Lewis (ed.): The Adoring Audience: Fan Culture and Popular Media, New York: Routledge, 30-49. Hills, M. (2002) Fan Culture, London and New York: Routledge. Daros, O. (2021) Have fan forums been swallowev up by social media companies?=Academia Letters https://doi.org/10.20935/AL1683

My current university is making me print & fill out a physical form and hand-deliver it to the registrar's office on campus in order to change my preferred/primary name 🙃🙃🙃 In order to find the form to do that, I had to go to the trans resources page of the LGBTQ+ center's website because on the registrar's office, I could only find the form to change your legal name/dob/ssn. I literally just go by my middle name. It's really not that hard.
Also, shoutout to my undergrad's housing management for making me go to their office at least five times a semester to argue them into accepting packages addressed to my middle name, even though I have never in my life received a package addressed to my first name ✌🏼🙃

It’s already happening. Like guys I cannot emphasize this enough the studios are going to make content creators the deal of a lifetime because they have a void to fill and those content creators will then be on the do not work list for the rest of their professional lives.
