«I shoot a lot of architecture, mixed in with scenes of daily life—or better yet, traces of daily life. I prefer to shoot in places that show their age, that are lived-in, over something shiny, new and sterile»

David Foster Nass, Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right.
«Environments are […] invisible,»¹ Marshall McLuhan once wrote. We need the artist to change our frame or perception, in order for us to «see the same thing that we have already seen before or at least could have seen, from a new perspective, in a new context.»² It is the artist who makes visible «what is otherwise present but overlooked.»³

Michele Cera, Tolyatti / Тольятти, Tolyatti, Russia 2020.
Tolyatti, a collaborative project by photographer Michele Cera and researcher Guido Sechi, is a visual and scientific exploration into society and common spaces in contemporary post-Soviet cities. This work, in particular, is about the city Tolyatti. Tolyatti is the largest Soviet industrial planned city and the most relevant example of a mono-industrial town in contemporary Russia. The largest district of the city, Avtozavodskiy rajon, was built starting from the late 1960s following the establishment of AvtoVAZ, the largest automobile manufacturer in the USSR, in order to accommodate factory workers from all Soviet republics.

Cyrus Cornut, On the Four Shores of Passing Times
Tumblr media
Cyrus Cornut, On the Four Shores of Passing Times, Chongqing, People's Republic of China, 2008.
Known as the «Mountain City,» Chongqing sits at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialang Rivers, its skyline often obscured by the perpetual fog that envelops it. A city of contrasts, Chongqing is both the heir to displaced communities from the Three Gorges dam and a testament to the rapid modernization efforts of the Beijing authorities, who have elevated it to the status of a municipality.
Against this backdrop of relentless development, Cyrus Cornut's lens captures the essence of Chongqing's urban landscape. From the gravity-defying skyscrapers that dot the skyline to the bustling streets teeming with newcomers, each photograph reveals a city in constant motion.

At the core of Mother Sky is the exploration of repetition—the subtle variations that distinguish each moment from the next. Through his lens, Pinna invites viewers to take a closer look at the seemingly mundane, revealing the dynamic nature of our surroundings.

Documenting Human Ingenuity in Urban Landscapes: Case Study Homes by Peter Bialobrzeski
Tumblr media
Peter Bialobrzeski, Case Study Homes, Manila, Philippines 2008.
The series Case Study Homes by Peter Bialobrzeski, was created in February 2008 in Baseco (The Bataan Shipyard Corporation Compound), a squatter camp located at the mouth of the Pasig River near the port of Manila. Bialobrzeski’s approach to the Case Study Homes reminds one of the photographic series by Bernd and Hilla Becher, who created paradigmatic works on the typology of «nomadic architecture,» particularly industrial buildings. However, Peter Bialobrzeski counteracts the Bechers‘ deliberately objective position in several respects.
The title Case Study Homes alludes to the Case Study House Program, initiated in 1945 by John Entenza, editor and publisher of the magazine Arts and Architecture, which is now considered one of America’s most significant contributions to modern architecture of the 20th century. The goal of the program was to develop modern single-family homes using inexpensive materials. However, living according to the model of the houses in Baseco/Manila is undoubtedly more obligatory for many more people than that of modern homes around Los Angeles.

Kate Schultze, Demolition, Ferrybridge Power Station, 2021.
Throughout history, industries have been instrumental in constructing new landscapes and shaping cultural identities, leaving an indelible mark on our surroundings through specific architectures and iconic elements that define our cultural scenes.
Industrial landscapes are not static entities but dynamic ones, constantly evolving in response to technological advancements, and changing needs, making them not just remnants of the past but dynamic elements of our present and future.

INTERVIEW
Adam Friedberg, Single Story Project
Tumblr media
Adam Friedberg, Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue, Broome St New York, NY.
The Single Story Project delves into the evolving architectural landscape of New York City's Lower East Side neighborhoods. Over the past fifteen years, rapid development has transformed the area, giving rise to towering structures and altering the urban fabric. Amidst this transformation, single-story buildings stand as relics of a bygone era, their significance heightened by their dwindling presence in a rapidly changing skyline.
This project aims to document every remaining single-story building within the boundaries of Manhattan's Lower East Side, capturing them in their current state before they fade into obscurity. Through black-and-white photography, devoid of human presence, the focus remains on the buildings and their surrounding negative space, echoing the work of influential photographers such as August Sander and Robert Adams.
Drawing inspiration from luminaries in the field, the Single Story Project seeks to preserve the essence of these structures as historical artifacts, creating a visual testament to their enduring significance amidst the march of progress.
