It's much more than that, there is evidence of the abuse that Annie suffered from Bertholdt and Reiner during her stay in Paradise. And it's not worth saying "It was Reiner who forced her to commit horrible acts and do all the work" because Bertholdt was always present and ALWAYS QUIET WHEN REINER TREATED HER LIKE SHIT AND MANIPULATED HER. He never did anything for her, he didn't even make an effort to get to know her and he was fully aware of everything he made her suffer and yet he hoped that Annie would magically reciprocate it if he was going to rescue her.

It's really that at least Reiner apologizes and in the end defends her from Jean's fury, Bertholdt WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE SOMETHING LIKE THAT, why am I so sure? because that man had no will of his own, he followed the masses like a sheep and never dared to express his opinion or do anything on his own.

Likewise, as I said before, he didn't really know the real Annie, to him she was just a pretty husk that he liked, but didn't love her. If he knew the real Annie he would have become disenchanted with her, not because Annie is bad or much less so, but she is a complicated girl and upon noticing that he would have lost any interest in her that he might have had at the beginning.
