Why pondering on own mortality is usefull
I thought of you when I read this quote from "The Daily Laws: 366 Meditations on Power, Seduction, Mastery, Strategy, and Human Nature" by Robert Greene.
"We experience a generalized anxiety, as we sense the need to get things done, but we are always postponing and scattering our forces."... "Daily Law: We must think of our mortality as a kind of continual deadline, giving a similar effect as described above to all our actions in life."
Obstacels why one might not think about own mortality
First obstacle is due to a emotions. It feels scary to commit something because committing something you leave variety of things outside of you scope. .
Second obstacle is that one needs to make a decision where to focus. To do this one needs to know to which direction to move
Third obstacle is related to this days quote. When there is a intention and direction and if left to that in some point energy starts to feel stagnant. Big overall intention and direction leaves so many options where to focus on daily basis. So focus tend to scatter and so goes the energy also. To avoid this one can choose a theme or a project for certain time period. Now it is easier to focus because you know that it is only this time period.
Fourth obstacle is that it is easier for us not to do anything. Also it is easier for us not doing this. Because if we watch our primal insticts we want to save energy.
Everything above mentioned feels scary because doing so you come to grips with your own shortcomings. It feels that you can get off the hook by not doing so. But in the end everyone faces the end. This Is why pondering on own mortality is usefull.

When walking or resting in nature, honor that realm by being there fully. Be still. Look. Listen. See how every animal and every plant iscompletely itself. Unlike humans, they have not split themselves in two. They do not live through mental images of themselves, so they do not need to be concerned with trying to protect and enhance those images. The deer is itself. The daffodil is itself. All things in nature are not only one with themselves but also one with the totality. They haven’t removed themselves from the fabric of the whole by claiming a separate existence: “me” and the rest of the universe. — Eckhart Tolle, from the book Stillness Speaks https://www.instagram.com/p/CmMRIg-upXO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Daily Law: We can use our imagination in this as well, by envisioning the day our death arrives, where we might be, how it might come. We must make this as vivid as possible. It could be tomorrow."

Whereas the beautiful is limited, the sublime is limitless, so that the mind in the presence of the sublime, attempting to imagine what it cannot, has pain in the failure but pleasure in contemplating the immensity of the attempt
