Anything to Win - The Ultimate Fighting Manual
Written by Alastair Devlin, the aim of this manual will be to collect all the main fighting techniques from pugilism of old, With the mind-set of the fighters from this period being:

🥊 William Harrison Dempsey…aka Jack Dempsey aka kid blackie aka the manassa mauler stands for a photograph while having his robe placed over his shoulders. Hall of fame trainer Jimmy Deforrest stands to Dempseys right (left of pic) and just like mike Tyson would do many years later where he would imitate Dempsey you can see Jack wearing the low cut black boots and the shaven sides of his head. You will also notice Dempsey wearing punching mittens for hitting bags…they offered protection to the knuckles only and nothing in support of the wrist or hand itself. Tough times bred tough men…Dempsey wasn’t fighting for adoration or fan approval in his beginnings….he fought to survive,to eat!…….it was a way of life. From a train ride hitching hobo who took his licks in back room bar brawls to sitting on the throne of world boxing as the most famous sports star on the planet holding the heavyweight title. Dempsey is a true depiction of ‘the American dream’….rags to riches is an understatement!
It doesn’t matter where you start…it matters where you finish.
Heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson and his trainer and manager Cus D'Amato. For years D'Amato was accused of protecting Patterson from a formidable group of top heavyweight contenders.
#OnThisDay in 1915, Jess Willard captured the heavyweight championship with a 26th round KO of Jack Johnson in Havana, Cuba. Though Johnson generally contended that he purposely lost the fight, the evidence for such a claim is shaky.
The Broughton Era - When pugilsm bare knuckle fighting became civilised, with the rules governing pugilism, established by Jack Broughton, became widely accepted and implemented. This was the first step towards modern boxing.
The hay pit, is a traditional place to find yourself in a bare knuckle fight. It is still used even today in organisations such as "Spartan Bare Knuckel Fight Club"
A great way to defend yourself against an opponent who gets too close! And a series of Self Defence techniques perfect for women!
Here we see a superb example of how to transition from standing chancery, to front chancery and then to side chancery, to maximise damage and prolong dominance over your opponent (as seen this works against even much stronger and larger individuals)

This is the first session, introducing the basics of the clinch, which is a great leveler within self defence. Once mastered, the clinch can allow you to manipulate, control and end a much larger and stronger opponent.
Being able to stand one on one with a physically superior opponent, is an essential requirement of Self Defence, and this is where pugilism excels.
