Tyla's "sands of time" look is absolutely stunning and likely to make Anakin Skywalker to go into a murderous rage so those dead kids are on you, girl.

Lily Gladstone at the Met Gala 2024, wearing gown by Gabriela Hearst, and jewellery by Kiowa jeweler Keri Ataumbi.
At first, it seems a rather muted look for the Met Gala, but every detail has significance. Read the story in Vogue.
The gown and cape are embroidered with constellations of recycled silver stars.
“Our ancestors are in the constellations - we're star people.” Keri Ataumbi.

The very fact that every TOS reboot is afraid to depict the closeness between Kirk and Spock in the same way it was depicted originally is a devastating reinforcement of how gay that shit was

The whole "the brain isn't fully mature until age 25" bit is actually a fairly impressive bit of psuedoscience for how incredibly stupid the way it misinterprets the data it's based on is.
Okay, so: there's a part of the human brain called the "prefrontal cortex" which is, among other things, responsible for executive function and impulse control. Like most parts of the brain, it undergoes active "rewiring" over time (i.e., pruning unused neural connections and establishing new ones), and in the case of the prefrontal cortex in particular, this rewiring sharply accelerates during puberty.
Because the pace of rewiring in the prefrontal cortex is linked to specific developmental milestones, it was hypothesised that it would slow down and eventually stop in adulthood. However, the process can't be directly observed; the only way to tell how much neural rewiring is taking place in a particular part of the brain is to compare multiple brain scans of the same individual performed over a period of time.
Thus, something called a "longitudinal study" was commissioned: the same individuals would undergo regular brain scans over a period of mayn years, beginning in early childhood, so that their prefrontal development could accurately be tracked.
The longitudinal study was originally planned to follow its subjects up to age 21. However, when the predicted cessation of prefrontal rewiring was not observed by age 21, additional funding was obtained, and the study period was extended to age 25. The predicted cessation of prefrontal development wasn't observed by age 25, either, at which point the study was terminated.
When the mainstream press got hold of these results, the conclusion that prefrontal rewiring continues at least until age 25 was reported as prefrontal development finishing at age 25. Critically, this is the exact opposite of what the study actually concluded. The study was unable to identify a stopping point for prefrontal development because no such stopping point was observed for any subject during the study period. The only significance of the age 25 is that no subjects were tracked beyond this age because the study ran out of funding!
I gets me when people try to argue against the neuroscience-proves-everybody-under-25-is-a-child talking point by claiming that it's merely an average, or that prefrontal development doesn't tell the whole story. Like, no, it's not an average – it's just bullshit. There's no evidence that the cited phenomenon exists at all; if there is an age where prefrontal rewiring levels off and stops (and it's not clear that there is), we don't know what age that is; we merely know that it must be older than 25.

introducing my partner to star wars for the first time is so fun because he's an officer in the military and keeps saying things like "is the imperial ranking system based on the navy or the air force" and "how did han solo enter the ranks as a general when he was functionally a contracter in the last movie" and it's like buddy george lucas literally mixed up units of distance and time while making these movies i promise he didn't even use a single braincell to think about this

this is a poll for a movie that doesn't exist.
It is vintage times. The powers that be have decided to again remake the classic vampire novella Dracula for the screen. in an amazing show of inter-studio solidarity, Hollywood’s most elite hotties are up for the starring roles. the producers know whoever they cast will greatly impact the genre, quality, and tone of the finished film, so they are turning to their wisest voices for guidance.
you are the new casting director for this star-studded epic. choose your players wisely.

How I Make A Shawl Pattern
So, on my recent post about the green shawl, @dandy-daisylion left some lovely tags:
Tumblr media
And since I have some time, I thought sure! I'm going to be using my kittenball shawl as my example for this, as the pattern is already finished.
So, the first thing you want is a concept sketch. For Kittenball, I had just figured out that medibang paint has a radial symmetry brush, and that I could set it to 4 part bilateral symmetry and was dicking around. I got this:
Tumblr media
I took that concept into MS paint, turned the grid visible and zoomed wayyyyyy in, and with the pencil tool started marking individual pixels to make the shapes I'd sketched. The shapes that work most easily for this are straight horizontal and vertical lines, and perfect 45 degree angles, and you can see I'd done my sketch with that in mind.
(organic curves are my nemesis. I have so much envy for people who can design in curving shapes)
When I had a pretty good approximation of my sketch, I cut the size of the canvas down to match the design and checked to see how many pixels wide it was. In general, with work like this, one pixel will equal one stitch, so you can take that number and compare it to the width of other shawls you like. For me, the most accurate version to the sketch gave me a very large prospective stitch count, over 850, which was just more than I wanted to deal with. So, I bullshitted a smaller number, and attempted to make a similar-enough one that I liked.
With this method, every black pixel takes the place of a yarnover, and every white pixel is some form of solid stitch. I'm presuming one decrease, immediately adjacent, for each yarnover, so the solid stitches you'd be working with so far are limited to knit/purl, a single decrease, a double decrease, and that's it.
Tumblr media
With large pieces of lace like this, a gauge that's about twice as many rows to number of stitches to make the same length is pretty standard, so when I'm converting this pixel image to a chart, I assume that I'm only working with pattern rows and have a plain row between each one.
So, the smaller pixel image, zoomed in, looks like this:
Tumblr media
From here, I go into whatever pattern writing software I'm using at the moment -- from the humble spreadsheet to stitchfiddle.com or some other more specialized option to simple graph paper and pencil -- and I place all the yarnovers. (This particular pattern has both hollow circles for yarnovers, and solid circles to represent the peas pattern from orenburg knitting, which continues on the plain row, so I needed it to stand out. I always forget the other half of the peas)
Tumblr media
Then, it's time for decreases. I use paired directional decreases instead of just k2tog everywhere, but that's entirely up to personal preference, and matters more on garments worked in a stockinette base than one on a garter stitch base, which this one is.
Most of this shawl is based on 45 degree angles, and diagonal lines emphasize that, so that's how I structured my decreases. I could very easily have gone with much smaller zigzags or even alternating or stacked double-decreases, but honestly diagonal lines are the simplest
Tumblr media
And when I mess up, and I do, this is usually where. I'll forget to put in a decrease somewhere, or add in one too many, or forget that something is supposed to be a double-decrease instead of a single. It happens. The more lace you knit, the more you'll be able to catch points like these where the designer fucked up and fix it without thinking.
A handy thing about the pixel art is that you can also use it as a progress image! Since you know that each row of pixels is one pattern row, as you cross them off your chart you can mark off that row of the image, so you know how far along you are!
