The Sequential Muralist
I haven’t posted on here in a while. You’re about to find out why. When I was an Americorps volunteer, back in 2010-2011, I was looking to do a mural promoting literacy on the Eastside of Detroit. I was so green, I didn’t understand why no one was passionate enough to do the work for free, even though I was in the midst of a semester at the College for Creative Studies. When my term and my…

Blank Komix- A Year in Review
Blank Komix- A Year in Review
I entered 2022 on the heels of an art exhibition at Granny’s Chandelier over in Hamtramck, MI and the completion of my first solo mural, over at See You Tomorrow on Woodward and Chandler (Detroit, MI). To top it all off, I’d just won the Steelkilt Media Festival’s award for Best Graphic Novel script. You better believe I was feeling myself, but the goal was to raise enough money to sustain my…

Fast Times at Lucha Comics
Fast Times at Lucha Comics
i Greetings All! The past year has been full of milestones as I began my first venture outside of entrepreneurship since my initial internship with Marvel Entertainment, Inc. ended (Dec. 2008). As Blank Komix neared its first full year as a legit company, I returned to the work force as an intern employed by Lucha Comics. This was not an easy decision to make, but one thing I try to ensure for…

Action Jackson- The Fox 2 Interview
Action Jackson- The Fox 2 Interview
I hope you all have been well. My apologies for the long span of time between posts. Since my last post, things have gotten very busy. Throughout the months of November and January, I rocked out with We Are Culture Creators. Every Thursday night, I joined artist, Demaciio as a guest live painter at the Red Room, right there in the Hotel St. Regis. Soon after that, I sat down with Amy Lange of Fox…

MAJIC Man
Greetings, Up above you can see what I’ve been up to for the past couple of months. Following the BLK Out Walls mural festival, I got the opportunity to team up with muralist Dennis Orlowski for an apprenticeship on…you guessed it, mural making. The whole experience was very surreal as we closed the generation gap and found common interests. We spent a lot of time laughing and learning. The…

Blank Komix and Environmental Justice
Blank Komix and Environmental Justice
I’m going to tell you a story. It starts back in high school where I met a kid who played in a Livonia garage band known as Gorilla Smith (actually, it was Godzilla Smith, but they were threatened with a lawsuit). We got real tight and stayed friends into college. Through him, I met a couple of other Wayne State students. We did what college kids do, but according to political principles we all…

Notes on City Hare-ish 13-"The Wrath of God"
Notes on City Hare-ish 13-“The Wrath of God”
Have you ever felt like God was punishing you for every time you defied Them? That’s what I felt like as the dust settled upon my return to Detroit, MI. Detroit is where I was born and raised. It is where I began questioning God, challenging God and working to understand Them. It was only fitting that after years of defiance with marriage, divorce, lay offs, terminated employment,…

Diary of a Mad Mofo
Diary of a Mad Mofo
January 2019 saw my release from what amounted to two years of institutionalization. After 10 months in LA County Jail, the Laura Act in the state of California allowed me to bypass a 5 year prison sentence in exchange for 1 year in a behavioral health facility. If you thought the pandemic lockdown was unbearable, imagine only being able to leave your house once a month or for doctor’s visits,…

Blank Komix Goes to Jail
Blank Komix Goes to Jail
It was March 13, 2017. I remember that day exactly, because I’d specifically chosen that day due to it being my area code- “313”. Political tensions were at an all time high as the United States settled in on the reality that Donald Trump had achieved presidency. Each day was a battle with the poor Whites I encountered at BTAC. We were all there for the same things, but some of them had voted for…

An Analysis of "City Hare" vol. 1- "Gentrification"
An Analysis of “City Hare” vol. 1- “Gentrification”
Well, it appears we’ve arrived at a moment in which enough time has passed where we can start discussing the highly experimental work that is “City Hare” vol. 1. On July 11, 2009, “City Hare” debuted. It was originally published as a weekly strip on a blog (long deleted). After rave reviews from my readers, I decided to turn the weekly “City Hare” strip into a comic book series. From there, we…

STAY TOON'D 4 MORE!
STAY TOON’D 4 MORE!
With over 70 days of protests and a global effort to provide political education for those in our masses who are not familiar with the daily struggle between BIPOC and law enforcement, I have been watching. I have been watching, reading, talking, writing and drawing as people cry out for a revolution. Now and then, some of my stuff makes it into the crowd whether it be via a personal narrative,…

FUCK THE POLICE, DEFUND AMERICA!
FUCK THE POLICE, DEFUND AMERICA!
Tumblr media
I’ve been watching the goings-on all around the world. In fact, I’ve been doing this for years. For most of my life, I’ve run to some form of entertainment in an effort to understand the world around me. I remember having to say the Pledge of Allegiance in kindergarten. At the time, I thought nothing of it. This was a daily routine at the private school I was enrolled in. However, by the time I…

"I DON'T KNOW A PROPER TITLE"- BLANK KOMIX & RACISM in AMERICA
“I DON’T KNOW A PROPER TITLE”- BLANK KOMIX & RACISM in AMERICA
Tumblr media
As a kid growing up in Detroit, MI, I was exposed to a lot of things that I would not be able to process until I got much older. While I both witnessed and experienced poverty,  I also experienced wealth and privilege. No, my Mother and I were not rich, but we did not struggle financially without my father. Due to the culture in my family, I had a diverse group of caretakers. I had grandparents…

In case you’ve been wondering what a cartoonist does every day, you can catch “The Dream” over on my Instagram. Unlike “City Hare” and “The Planet“, “The Dream” chronicles my struggles with day to day life. These are just doodles from my personal journal. It’s full of metaphors and symbolism, some stream of consciousness stuff and all that. If you’ve read my other work, you might be surprised to notice that it’s pretty mild. Of course, these are just snap shots of specific moments in my life. You never know, if we’ve met, you might pop up in there one day. It’s also up for free, but if you’d like original artwork from “The Dream”, just email me at [email protected]. For $20, I’ll part with the original strip and you can put it up on your wall.
The plan is to keep going with “The Dream”. There’s nothing in the works to turn it into a book, but that could change in the future. It could pop up in a bathroom stall or wher ever I feel like drawing it, in true Blank Komix fashion. Don’t worry though, if you’re looking for an escape from your own mind, then you’re in the right place. Go to any of the links below.
