We got an update this morning: bug is still trucking along after surgery. They said he is standing on his own and looking a lot more alert after he got his full blood transfusion. He has a feeding tube in his stomach and a drain tube in his abdomen, both of which are doing their job but they still have concerns: 1) he has a heart condition so they need to be slow and careful with transfusions and giving him fluids so as not to trigger heart failure. I’m hoping that today they are able to use the feeding tube to give him some heart medicines so that they can go a little more aggressive with the fluids. * 2) the CTScan revealed some kidney damage which could have been a chronic thing that just wasn’t seen. One kidney is pretty bad and the other is “irregular”. In an otherwise healthy dog this would be treated and he would be ok but Bug is not healthy yet. They are concerned about his urine output quantity still and want to make sure the kidneys are recovering with the rest of his body. * We are probably going to see him this afternoon so will give updates after that. Another update: After about 2 hours in surgery we have better news but we are still on a “guarded” prognosis. He made it through surgery and they found that he had an abscess on his liver that was messing up all of his internal organs. He was basically headed down the path of total organ failure, his disgrstive tract basically stopped working and he has 7,000 platelets when he should have 200,000! Now that he is out of surgery, the abscess was completely removed and an aspirate taken from a piece of liver that looked not-quite-right, we need to hope and pray that his platelet count recovers and his heart remains strong even though it is enlarged. He is still getting plasma transfusions and will get a blood transfusion later tonight and remain in ICU for the next couple of days. I really truly can not tell you all how incredible it has been to watch the world pull together and help us financially get through this. You all are a dogsend, because I know that my husband and I would have been is dire times had we had to cover more of this. Just got word back from the doctor that Bug’s CTScan was completed and that he does have other things going on that are concerning: 1) there are additional ”shadows” on his liver that could be more absesses or could be his cancer returning. 2) this billary ducts had some calcification 3) he has some kidney disease that wasn’t visible from the ultrasound None of things things would stop us from going forward with the surgery and he is on his way in to surgery now. Girl human here: today was a difficult day. Thanks to the support of bug’s incredible followers donating to our gofundme we are going to be able to do all of the procedures that the vet recommended - CTScan and surgery (and and and...) but that didn’t make our meeting with them any less difficult. Bug is in a bad way. His digestive tract has slowed and his platelets are INCREDIBLY low. That paired with his heart condition means that this procedure alone is DANGEROUS. There is a chance he won’t survive it and if that is the case I don’t know what I will do with myself. The prognosis was deemed “guarded” which means it’s not good so all we have to do is wait. Seeing him before surgery was rough, he was completely weak but scared of every loud noise, looking at me only with his eyes, not lifting his head. **update** Bug took a really bad turn for the worse and he is going to need intense emergency surgery, platelet transfusion, and a CTScan. I am besides myself with grief, anxiety, and pain at the thought of losing this little dog who means so much to me. He has gotten me through some dark times. We usually wouldnt ask for financial help with vet bills but this one is a doozy that we just wouldn’t be able to swing without the help and support of bug’s fans. ***update*** It’s 4am so I need to keep this brief. Bug took a turn. It went from vomiting to being completely unable to walk so we rushed him in to the hospital. They are concerned about acute pancreatitis now, more serious than what we had thought. Supportive care is where we are headed, a two night stay in the hospital. We will know more tomorrow, and when I know more I will be sure to keep you all posted. Why are things so broken? ? ? Pancreatitis means pain to dogs. Managing the pain until the flare up is over is really the only treatment but check this out: veterinarians have their hands tied when it comes to prescribing legitimate pain management prescriptions due to the bunk execution of the “war on drugs” in the US and in my state. My doctor can’t prescribe the best pain medication for me because of the “war” on opiates. I can only get something barely effective or something wayyyyy too strong. The middle-ground isn’t an option solely because of a poorly conceived concept of how to reduce opiate addiction (hint: it’s not by making legitimate pain medication inaccessible for those who need it - human OR animal!). On the other end of things, there are also medications that may help that my doctor can not even bring up! #CBD is still strictly controlled in my state and even though it is federally legal I am not allowed to take it with the guidance of a doctor because BUREAUCRACY IS SLOW. This system is broken. You don’t rip necessary medication from patients who need it. You don’t die the hands of medical professionals from talking about medications.
