Random worldbuilding: A culture where everyone's social status is expressed through how their hair is braided.
Children all have the same kind of a simple, unisex "child's braid" which is meant for their parents to be easy to do - traditionally boys were only taught how to do a "wife's braid" while women braid both their husbands and their children, but a modern man is naturally an attentive father and contributes to both cleaning and feeding, and clothing and braiding his children.
While this kind of knowledge is more accessible in the modern age, the art of braiding is still seen as an intimate family thing, and it's not unusual for a youth to come out to their parents by the way of braids - for example a daughter asking her father to teach her how to do the "wife's braid", or a son asking her mother how to weave the "husband braid" for their future spouse. Or a trans kid asking their parents to give them the other gender's braid when it's time to transition from the child braid into the "unmarried youth" one.
It is nonetheless still somewhat common to see an older gay man with a "wife's braid" or two older women both wearing "husband braids", because that was the only way they were taught to braid a future partner's hair when they were young. They could learn the "appropriate" braid now, but it has become a part of the culture, an old-fashioned gay thing to do. It's pride - if you wear this braid to show that you're an adult with a spouse, why try to hide who braids your hair every morning?
The only braid that one is expected to do on themselves is the widow's braid - the only one that is also unisex, braided in reverse from the simple children's braid. Sometimes, young unmarried adults who have no interest in starting a family switch directly into wearing a widow's braid to signify that they are not looking for a partner and are independent adults on their own.

hi!! you do not have to follow traditional gender roles to be a man- it's all up to your personal choice. but yes there are stereotypes and assumptions made about different genders- women are typically assumed to be more friendly, emotional, dainty, and caring, while men are usually aggressive, strong, cold, and emotionless. personally i think these are both shit and EVERYONE can be any of these things, but yes these stereotypes do still exist and it is still how many people see gender (i decided fuck that, my gender is i am me and I refuse to be defined like that). But you do not HAVE to follow those stereotypes nor should you need to to be accepted
understandable thank you. honestly ive just opted out of all that shit. im a boy because i like how the word sounds i dont actually want to change who i am or what i look like its purely a cosmetic thing. on a molecular level i am just made out of meat and i do not understand any of society at all so imma just go with it and pretend like i understand

xie lian's bamboo hat really doesn't have a whole lot of practical use in the novel. very often he doesn't even wear it, he just carries it around on his back. it probably falls to the ground and he has to go back and pick it up more often than he wears it. but he would never go anywhere without it.
because it reminds him that there's good in the world and in humanity. it reminds him that even if everything else is terrible, even if he feels like dying, there's still something worth living for.
at the end of the day, the bamboo hat is what makes xie lian different from jun wu. because he was able to see that even if most of the world is cruel, there's also kindness and he chose to focus on that kindness while jun wu chose to focus on the cruelty.
it's probably one of the strongest symbols in this novel, but in a very literal way it also serves as a reminder for xie lian of why he keeps going after all those years and it's why he always goes back to retrieve it when he loses it somewhere along the way

Guys, please, Tango doesn't consider himself a builder in the same way Michelangelo might not consider himself a painter* (see tags). You can accept you're very good at two things, and still consider yourself better at one over the other. It's not negative talk when he calls himself a redstone guy.
