carmine slides his arm around selina's waist and leads her deeper into the high rollers' lounge; she doesn't want to fuck for rent this month, but she asked for help and carmine told her, the work waits. she surveys the dark little room, attempting to identify the faces of powerful men, to catalogue them away in her blackmail file, her most favorite way to dissociate.

carmine leads her to the deepest corner, and the figure there is cast in shadow, seemingly folded into the recesses of the leather chair. "alberto, sit up. i want you to meet someone special," falcone says as releases his hold on selina's waist. she steps into the lamplight nearest the stranger's chair, showing herself, and she hates this part, the flirting, the pretending. it's an exchange, her dignity for his money, his money for her rent, and there's no need to dress it up.

a pale hand emerges from the shadows, and tugs at the hem of her skirt as a voice observes, "not real leather."

selina looks to falcone, and his face is impassive as ever. "al's been feeling a little lonely since he got back from oxford," he instructs, as if he's assigning homework for selina.

she was always a good student, so she bares her teeth and purrs, "welcome home."
