can't believe on a panel full of analysts it's wayne gretzky with the one most radical and insanely valid take and it's literally just "i don't think we should allow players to kill each other" what is this

i think actually the key to successfully doing tumblr (and especially doing fandom on tumblr) is realising that your blog is your little house and you can post about whatever you like there. once you realise you are just living in and decorating your very own silly little online house you start focusing on what makes you happy rather than constantly performing for & compromising your tastes for & placing all your self worth on little scraps of clout, and you will be a lot happier for it

the thing about that kid is like okay sure i’ll play along with you and i’ll pretend every hit he’s ever laid is totally clean and any injuries were just freak incidents of bad luck because he’s so tall and he would never want to hurt anyone and his team is definitely not encouraging him to hurt anyone. okay? everything i’m about to say is taking all of that in consideration in good faith. if these are the results of good, clean hits, and they’re legal, then the nhl needs to change its rules about hits. i don’t care if someone is 6’7. if they can’t finish a hit without direct head contact they shouldn’t be laying them at all. “aw, that sucks, why does he have to play differently than anyone else” because everyone else seems capable of not knocking out multiple players in a season where they had the second lowest ice time in the league. sorry! players not getting traumatic head injuries is more important to me than making sure everyone can hit anyone they want however they want in the name of fairness, and it should be for the league too.
i don’t understand why this is controversial. last season when i said if an elbow to the head in the middle of the ice is a legal hit they need to change what a legal hit is i got so many people angry with me and it’s like, for what? for what? i am not talking about these types of players on a personal level, i am not insulting teams out of rivalries, i am not implying all fans of these players or teams are bad people. when a style of play has proven to be dangerous time and time and time and time and time again, then that style of play needs to be removed from the game. if next season sidney crosby decided his new move was laying out opponents by elbowing them in the head i would feel the exact same way. if you absolutely cannot play hockey without posing serious and long-term risk to the health of your opponents on the ice, you should not be playing hockey. the end. legal hits clean hits head down height difference i don’t care it doesn’t matter. even believing that it’s an accident every time. you should not be on that ice if you are incapable of playing safely.

I truly think some of the best character work you can do if you’re bored or unsure about characterization is listen to music and hold the characters up to the song and see what fits. If you can articulate why the song fits - a line, a beat, vibes - you are furthering your understanding of the character and you get to practice talking about the why of them. Sometimes it’s a “yes but” situation and bam new au to explain how they fit in the vibes of the song. For example: [character but mob au] or [ship but college au]. If you’re gonna write you need to know who these characters are in a variety of situations and that includes ones that are so far out of canon as to be unrecognizable and yet still them.

i keep seeing that post about how frustrating the buff guy -> petite girl type genderbending is, and i wanted to add my two cents regarding the addition of ‘just swap pronouns and don’t change the design’ approach because i think these are two sides of the same coin, as they both fail to really delve into what i think is the most interesting aspect of this design exercise.
the reason i find genderbending to be such a fun and interesting challenge is because, if you actually want to be good at it and put thought into it, you have to really consider the character’s canon gender expression and think about what it means to them and how it reflects in their outward appearance and presentation.
is this male character buff because he likes to work out / be strong, or does he aspire to achieve conventional heteronormative male beauty?
is this female character a tomboy because she likes to express herself in a more masculine way, or is she doing it to fight gender norms?
the answers to those questions should produce very different designs!
this website loves to say that gender is a spectrum, but sometimes i genuinely wonder if people actually understand what that means.
gender expression, much like gender, is also a spectrum, which is why keeping the character exactly the same won’t always work, in the same way that just making the character conventionally attractive won’t always work. but sometimes, a buff dude would actually just be a hot girl. lady bane, however, would 100% look exactly the same.

u mentioned a few days ago a “goalie story” posted by the athletic a few years ago, do you happen to have a link to that on hand?
The story I meant in that post was this one from 2020, where the writer talks to retired goalies who are in their 40s-70s now about their pain: ‘What hurts now?’ For retired NHL goalies, the answer is often: everything
In 2019, Scott Burnside also did an article about the gear improvements for goalies that's slightly connected called With injuries to goalies on the rise, what is being done to protect them? It's not quite as relevant to the longevity aspect, but because I have a friend who is disabled due to multiple concussions, I think that part of the conversation is important as well.
Highly recommend that first article though. It has stayed with me.
