Okay. I'm about to say something that's probably going to get me run out of the fandom, but.

I don't actually think Tommy leaving their date early had anything to do with him not wanting to pressure Buck (regardless of what he claimed later). Instead, I think it had everything to do with Tommy being annoyed and no longer into it that evening, and I think that is both okay AND significantly more interesting than taking him at his word later and framing it as some selfless act by a sanitized elder gay shepherd just trying to do right by Buck.

#anyway let characters have nuance #<- yes!!! #loved this analysis #this is exactly how i read the situation too #and honestly this read makes all their scenes that episode that much more layered and interesting #tommy was absolutely hurt by the way buck acted—and that is not a character flaw!

Why the hell was Buck calling him so late?

“Buck?”

There was some static and shuffling on the other end, Eddie wondering if Buck had butt dialed him or something.

“Buck?” Eddie tried again, the man’s voice finally greeting him.

“EDDIE!”

It was way too loud and excitable for the time of the night, but Eddie found himself smiling for it all the same.

“How much have you had to drink?”

“Where are you?” was the excited response he got, Eddie’s heart aching a little for it.

“I’m at home, in bed, where you should probably be.”

“I’d like to be in your bed.”

Eddie swallowed thickly. Buck sounded cocky, flirty.

Thankfully Buck spoke again, Eddie unable to come up with anything coherent.

“S’no-no fun w’out you.”

Buck sounded pouty, Eddie all but seeing his lower lip stuck out over the phone.

“No fun without me, huh? What ah, what would we be doing if I was there?”

Re: the bucktommy endgame tags. I agree it could potentially be a Travis/Emmett type break up and get back together thing. Though hopefully not as toxic as they have been lol

Yeah! Tbh I don't watch nearly enough Station 19 to be able to comment much on the nuances of Travis and Emmett's relationship, but yeah, if BuckTommy were endgame I think it would probably happen a little like that. Idk, the vibe I get from Tim et. al is that he was bored of what was going on with Buck's romantic life and wanted to inject new life into it through this storyline. Buck being attracted to men opens up a brand new avenue for Tim to be creative, and I don't think he'd want to cut off all those future possibilities for Buck by sticking them together in Buck's only relationship for the rest of the series so fast.

But I do think in a world where Buck and Tommy's first go-around ended amicably (which is sort of what I'd foresee for them anyway) and the show didn't intend to go forward with making Eddie the endgame, Tommy could definitely come back around later to become the endgame relationship for a lot of the reasons you mentioned in your tags. I don't think it would be very narratively satisfying for Buck to end up with someone who's not a first responder and doesn't have firsthand experience with that life, and I think Tommy would be a really good option that would make Buck's endgame LI fit seamlessly into the world around them through his connections with the other mains instead of just something on the side to tide Buck over in his own singular storylines. Very interested to see where they go from here with them, and I do hope we at least get the rest of this season with BuckTommy, if not more!

I wonder if Tim is regretting/really feeling the effects of killing off Shannon yet, because the ONLY way a non-Buddie endgame would work is if Buck got with [x], let's say Tommy, in this example, and Eddie got back together with Shannon. That's the only way this would work. But in killing her, they took away the only exit strategy that would make sense and do the characters justice. So without her, anything but Endgame Buck/Eddie is just narratively weaker for Eddie especially. But. Anyways.

#yeah #this is honestly my biggest fear when it comes to eddie #that every main character ends up in a narratively satisfying relationship except for him #because they decide not to go for the only remaining option that makes sense anymore for whatever reason #eddie ending up with another generic doll they created purely to smash together with him would be my villain origin story actually

#it helps that its a character already enmeshed in the story and been around and has connections to other people #<- i agree with this #i think out of all of buck's canon LIs this one has the best chance of working and would feel the most natural #they wouldn't have the problem of buck's LI being “siloed off” as tim said #and he could have relevant emergencies/storylines of his own given that he's also a first responder #and they are very sweet together! i'm really excited to see where they go (ignore the fact I've watched the kiss eleventy billion times) #that being said...it's been two episodes 🫠 #there's still SO much of their relationship we haven't seen for me to be able to make this judgment #also if they are endgame i don't think it would be one continuous relationship #i feel like bc of the timing and 911 still having a lot of long-term viability that buck still has 1 or 2 more LIs before “the one” #so i could see a situation where they part ways for a bit and come back to each other at the end but that's it #idk ymmv on my last point but idk if they want to set buck's endgame in stone just quite yet or if they're even looking that far in advance #ALL THAT TO SAY 'maybe' is my answer for now 😂

When Buck opens his eyes, someone is sitting on the couch near his feet the way Chris does. Someone who shouldn’t be here. Buck sits up frantically and stares at the vision of Eddie, healthy and beautiful and here and unharmed. 

Buck is dreaming. That’s it. Has to be. Wow, he actually fell asleep? Enough to dream? 

“Hey, Buck,” this Eddie says softly, and it sounds so real. It’s gentle and loving and full of warmth like Eddie always is when they talk. 

Buck reaches for him. He sits up and needs to hug him, hold him, feel him alive and breathing on his own. But when Buck reaches him, he touches nothing. There’s nothing to touch. 

He’s dreaming. It’s a vision. Nothing solid. Buck sags and sits back on his side of the couch and stares instead. Maybe looking at whole, healthy beautiful Eddie will somehow manifest this into reality. “You’re not real. You’re not here. I’m dreaming, right? And talking to myself? Apparently.”

“Either that or I am,” Eddie says. 

Buck hadn’t considered that. Maybe Buck is the one who isn’t real. Maybe none of this is real and the whole of his existence is in his mind. Or in the mind of someone else? 

Who knows. It’s too convoluted and too much to think about. But he’s read about this happening before. Someone’s loved one in the hospital, near death, and how their family had dreams or visions of them visiting. Maybe relaying messages. Maybe offering a comforting presence. Maybe nothing but the imagination of a mind wrecked by tragedy. Doesn’t really matter either way. 

“Why are you here? Buck asks him even if he’s talking to himself. 

Eddie swallows and looks pained. And so real. So, so vividly real. Even if nothing is real anymore. “I wanted to be with you.”

Buck reaches for him again because he has to. Eddie offers his hand in return this time. 

Their fingers go through each other. Not touching. Nothing to feel. Nothing tangible. 

They can’t touch.

Why would they? Even in a dream, they don’t get to have anything of each other. 

“Please don’t die,” Buck says. 

Eddie gives him a pained smile. “I’m trying really hard not to.” 

Buck knows that. He knows Eddie would fight. Is fighting. He had to say it anyway. “Why did you— why? I mean I know it’s our job and that’s what we do. But what happened? Why— why was it like that? Why did it end up like that?” 

Did you do it on purpose? Did you sacrifice yourself to save Tommy? Did you do that?

Eddie looks away from him, exactly how real Eddie would. He shrugs. As if it’s nothing. As if it’s just an accident. As if there was no emotion behind anything. “I know you need him. I wasn’t going to let you lose him.”

Buck closes his eyes, bends his head, and just wants to cry again like he has been for more than two weeks. “Eddie,” he sobs and clutches himself around his chest, around his own body since he can’t touch Eddie. “I need you, too. I can’t— This isn’t okay. This is worse. This is so much worse. Not that I want it the other way. It would have killed me, too. But. I can’t do this. I can’t lose you. I need you, too.”

“I figured,” Eddie says quietly. So quiet and strained and absent and distant. Too distant. “If you had to choose. You already chose. You picked him. I couldn’t let you lose him.” 

At this point, Buck isn’t sure which is worse— if this is real and what Eddie really thinks or if this is his own mind telling him what he already feels guilty about. 

#i'm already crying 😭 #literally said out loud “but he needs YOU too!” before i got to that part 😭 #idk how i'm going to cope when the entire fic gets here but i'm excited!
