Hello Cryptid-Jack! I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction to acquire a Kaidan rig for use in Blender. I haven't been able to source him through my usual places like Agora, Animator's Airtable, and Animation Methods. Thank you!

Yeah, no problem @masweird ! Believe it or not, Deviantart is actually a super good resource for 3D models- it's where I get most of mine!

For some of them, however, especially those from older games, you might find that they're in the .xps format, which means you're going to need the program XNALara to open them up so you can export them as an .obj, which you can then import into Blender for use.

Here's a DA group that has just about every ME model you could ever want! Although, actually, just looking again I found a Kaidan specifically for the Blender cycles engine here in that same group.

Also, if you're looking for a good 3D resource I highly recommend OPEN3DLAB, they've got a lot of great stuff, esp if you're looking for models from your fave games.

Hi! I’m considering trying DAZ3D, but I have no previous experience with anything of the sort. Do you think it’s a beginner friendly tool? Do you use any other software to you create and render your images? And how to create and/or find character models as cool as yours? Thanks for any help!

As far as 3D programs go, I really do think Daz is pretty beginner friendly. It's really more of a... virtual photography program, if that makes sense? Blender and programs like it do everything Daz does but with the addition of also being a tool for creating 3D assets from scratch, which is not something you're really doing with Daz. In Daz you're using pre-made or customized assets (unless you make assets from scratch yourself and import them) then positioning and lighting them in much the same way a photographer would on a set.

The least beginner friendly thing about it I would say is that you need a pretty decent computer to do the renders. Rendering (in any 3D program, not just daz) requires a lot more than a 2D art program like PS or CSP.

As for other stuff I use, Daz does the actual rendering, but sometimes I'll do a little touch up after in CSP or PS. Same as you would for a regular photo, adjusting the color or fixing any minor flaws I didn't notice before I ran the render.

For character models, the way Daz works is that it comes with base, pre-rigged and poseable male and female models that you can customize yourself either via morphs you can purchase from the Daz store (or other sites) or make yourself if you know your way around blender. Same goes for textures and clothes/hair/accessories. There's a whole community of people out there making assets for the program, it's very cool but you can definitely sink a lot of money into it if you don't watch out X'D

Some of my game specific models (like Kaidan and Shepard) are ones that I had to go through some very convoluted steps to convert into morphs that could be used on the default Daz models. There's a lot of people out there converting game characters to Daz models, though, you can find all sorts! ME is just an old enough game that while you can find a lot of the female characters really easily (I'll let you guess why lol), the male ones were next to impossible to find so I had to do it myself X'D
