still thinking about this so. at some point he gets a chance at immortality - and the big sign that he's changing as a person is that he turns it down. also in a parallel to jack he dies saving ruby (but i don't think in a romantic way, maybe he has the moment where he goes "shit this is what it feels like having a friend") but ruby doesn't have the ability to bring him back.

also the doctor has probably known all along bc time lord sense but is pretending otherwise because maybe there's a chance for redemption here.
