THIS IS US

If you ask anyone who has just met Mette, and heard her husband’s jokes, they would say that she hates the jokes and find them and him embarrassing. But that couldn’t be further from the truth! She secretly adores him, and likes his jokes well enough, even though some of them are very inappropriate.

She is mostly calm and collected, but piss her off (by disrespecting her kids, husband or her livelyhood) and you will be in a woooorld of pain. A verbal whiplash is what she will give you!

There is not much to see, when you meet Mette for the first time. You might see that she is calm and works very hard, but that’s about it. She likes to keep her private life a secret, and likes to not share everything with everyone, which is kinda the opposite of who her husband is. He shares everything, while she would rather just keep private private.

Mette is originally from Denmark, but has lived in USA since she was 5 years old. She went to an American school, and there she met Gabe. She helped them through a hard period in life where they were discovering themself, and her parents even let them move in, when they were kicked out.

She met her husband in High School, and instantly fell in love with him, and he with her. They soon became boyfriend and girlfriend, and has stuck together ever since.

In 2020 she moved back to Denmark with her husband Mateo and her two small kids, and then opened her own stable, Texas style. Of course she wanted to have western horses, as she had lived in Texas most of her life, and when she was told about a stable with American Curly Horses which was closing down, she took the chance and bought them all for her stable Dead End Ranch to breed Stock build Curlies.

Then she bred them to some of the few stocks she had and VUPTI she had stock build curlies!

Mateo is kind of a strange man. He is very friendly though, and genuinely wants to make friends, even though he has a habit of cracking many, many jokes, many of which are kinda inappropriate. He keeps those to himself around his kids though.

He is a kind man, and doesn’t want to say anything that could hurt anyone. Though he likes to make others laugh. The louder the better. Even awkward laughter humors him, because of the inappropriate jokes thing. He is very much into cars, though range rovers are the best, and he is not that much into fast cars, big cars are more of his passion.

Loving his daughters a lot, along with his wife, he enjoys family time more than anything, and likes to crack jokes there too - though those are definitely more family friendly, at least around his kids. He is not the best at words, and will show his love with gestures of love instead of telling someone that he loves them - though he will occasionally tell his kids and his wife this.

Mateo is from Texas, born and raised. He is a real cowboy, and has grown up at a western barn that his parents owned. He met Mette in High School, doing his shy-guy-rutine (though he was genuinely shy back then) and the rest is history.

He of course said yes, when Mette wanted to move back to Denmark and also agreed to move with her as to not rob his daughters of a father. He likes Denmark well enough, though he sometimes misses the Texas sun in the cold and wet/rainy place that Denmark is.

Larke is the more boyish of the Thorne Twins. She likes cars and horse and mud, and everything that’s wild and crazy. She likes the more tomboy-ish style, and has a lot of flannel and jeans in her wardrobe. She likes to have her hair out of the way, but loves her long hair, and would never cut it short - not that her mother would ever let her though!

She is almost constantly arguing with her twin sister, and they can never agree on anything. When they were younger though they were inseparable. Now though they don’t even want to be in the same room as the other, and will leave it (mostly Larke leaves, while the more dominant Sorine stays) if they see each other. Good thing Dead End Ranch has three stable buildings, haha!

Sorine is very femme. She is very much into dresses, makeup and jewelery and all that shabam. She mostly thinks that any other western discipline than Western Dressage and Driving is uncultured and boring, while the “propper way” (her way) is much better. Therefore she also has the only Friesian at the barn.

When she and Larke drifted apart, she began being into English riding as well, and wanted nothing more than to fit into her friend group of English riders and Dressage riders. She has a big wish, only to fit in though, to try out English riding, and preferably get a horse or a pony for that at some point.

In secret she loves Western Dressage and Driving, though she knows it’s more “propper” to like dressage and literally any English discipline.

When Larke and Sorine was younger they were each other’s best friends. Larke would just go with whatever Sorine wanted, and wasn’t much of her “own person” at that time, which made it easy for Sorine to dominate and decide everything for them.

They looked a lot more like each other back then, and their mother Mette loved to put them in matching (though different colored) dresses when at parties or in their every day life. It all changed when they both began school, and the twins got very different friend groups. Larke adopted a more boy-ish style, while Sorine adopted a very feminine and girl-ish style instead.

And their friend groups didn’t get along with each other, which started a rivalry between them, and also the twins. It was hard for them to have to choose between their friends and their twin, but Sorine eventually chose her friends over her sister, and that’s how the two of them became almost enemies.

PRESENTING NEW STAFFMEMBER! Part 2

Seraphina, or Phina as she is often called, is a young woman with opinions about almost everything. Some, Gabe cough cough, might call her annoying or something worse, but she just really likes to speak her mind, and doesn’t think too much about the consequences. She is stubborn and argumentative, when she has a strong opinion about something, which makes it hard for her to talk to others, bc she is so passionate about almost everything.

Even if she is very opinionated, she also has a sweeter, more humorous side, and is really sweet around those she consider her friends (which are often people she shares opinions with). She has a big love for anything pastel coloured, and will wear them as often as possible, which makes going to shows hard for her, as the colours are often more conservative there.

She has been in one serious relationship her whole life, and was broken up with a few days before she became staff at Dead End Ranch. After that she hasn’t dated anyone, as she finds it hard to trust others in that way now. She is very panicky around flirty people, as she don’t wanna commit to anything. Casual fling? Sure! But just not right now. Commitment makes her wanna run for the hills!

Other than that she is also the stable’s Tech Manager, as she is pretty good with computers. And what she can’t fix is possibly not worth fixing, even if her best friend Teemu sometimes gives her a hand.

Anetta is well… very Anetta. She is a big perfectionist, and works hard on everything she puts her mind to. Being such a workaholic her life has been busy and hard, and going for what she wants has been her purpose in life. Not that she has always gotten that, but she has this philosophy that as long as she works really hard on something she will eventually accomplish it.

Being a hard worker comes with perfectionism and a lot of other not that desireble traits. She is not exactly a snob as such, except she is. She has very hard standards, and puts everyone to them. Is she reaching for the stars? She thinks not. Being like that makes her have high standards for everything. Which often means she doesn’t join the staff for lunch, as she wants high quality food and time to enjoy it. And as she often doesn’t have either, then she will just skip it, and take her lunch or whatever when time is better.

But aside from being what she is, even a neatfreak, she just throws that aside when she is among animals. Literally all kinds of animals, not just horses. She has nothing against a little dirt, as long as she is caring for her or the pets around her.

PRESENTING NEW STAFFMEMBERS! Part 1

(This update is text-heavy!)

Gabe Ryan, as they likes to be called, is not a girly girl by any means. They prefers the they/them pronouns, and hates being called by their actual name: Gabriella, as it sounds too femme for them. They is ok with the she/her pronouns though, and was born female.

They are mostly into the tomboy look, and is a big lover of anything fast: cars, motorcycles and of course horses to. Is it fast and dangerous they are definitely doing it! There is a daredevil hidden in them! They is quite handy with almost any kind of tool, and is a big help when anything breaks and needs to be repaired. So naturally they is the handy-person of the stable.

Their most secret passion is cooking. They love it, even if it’s not something they share with everyone. Actually they share it with almost no one, and people are very surprised if they make food and it actually tastes good. Also they is definitely not an art lover, actually they can’t stand it. They think people make too much of a deal out of it, as it’s well… silly to them.

Gabe was born female, but early on they didn’t feel like that was right for them. Throughout her early teens it was hard for them, as they dressed more boyish, and was a real tomboy. They didn’t exactly know what to do, and for a long time they thought they had been born in the wrong body. Throughout puberty they had a hard time, using a binder a lot to hard their feminine parts.

Though as they grew older they learned about the LGBTQ+ community, and found their place as a non-binary person. Their parents didn’t like that though, and kicked them out at the tender age of 16. Then Mette Thorne’s parents took them in, and took care of them. And that’s how they know Mette.

Years later Mette moved back to her home country Denmark, and opened her barn Dead End Ranch. Just a few months ago her parents moved back to Denmark too, and then she was able to convince Gabe to move to Denmark too to become a staff member of the stable. As Gabe had quite a lot of experience with western horses and the disciplines they said yes, and moved over right away along with her private gelding DER Little Cloud.

Teemu Ilves is from Finland, and is a quiet one. Except from when he gets something, or a lot, to drink then he will become such a party animal that you won’t believe that he is normally such a loner. In private he is very much a bookworm, and loves to acquire knowledge any way he can. He will often read about something before trying it in real life.

Some might call him a genius, but he indeed has a high IQ, and is smarter than most. Though that’s only booksmarts, not social smarts. He sometimes has a hard time with communicating his wants and needs, or communicating in general, but people at Dead End Ranch are pretty lax, and just waits for him to come out of his shell.

Being someone who thirsts for knowledge, he is also pretty good with computers. He has a lot in common with Seraphina Malarc, whom he might consider his best friend at the stables. He is a huge anime and mange lover, both from comics and TV-series. Enjoying both he likes to make his style more Asian than Finnish exactly. Not that he always succeed, but he loves their style.

SPRING HACK!

I'll present the new staff members better later, but this is just a short text and a picture of today's hack in the nature around the grounds of Dead End Ranch's facilities.

With us we have - from left to right - IVH Gone to Be Bright with his rider Teemu Ilves, DER Little Cloud with his rider Gabe Ryan, DER Koda with her rider Seraphina Malarc and at the far right end we have DER Pot O' Gold with his rider Anetta Baker.

As I said all the staffmembers will be introduced better another day, and all the horses but Koda are new too, but they will also be introduced another day. I can say though that Little Cloud aka. Claude is Gabe's own private horse, and the only gelding in our herd!

THE BABIES

Three foals has been born at Dead End Ranch this spring. Please welcome first one up DER Justa Thunder Burst aka. Coldun. He is a Bay Splash White (Ee Aa nSpl) American Curly Horse after DER Justa Splash Bomb and RRS Fosmanta.

He is one of two colts from this year. Sweet and confident little guy, who doesn't exactly know how big he is, and needs to be made aware of that before he is fully grown. Quite a handful

Next one up is Gråravn's Radiant Rhythmic Pulse, who is a collab foal bred with Rune Aksnes. He is after Rune's Gråravn's Color Me Champagne and our own DER Moxie's Tempo. Being his father's son he came out as the colour Amber Champagne with Tobiano (Ee Aa nCh nT nW). A cute little fellow, who is a little shy, but warms up to you quite quickly.

Last one up is the only filly from this foalcrop. Her name is DER Blues' Midnight Muse, and she is another collab foal with Rune Aksnes. Her colour is Bay Roan Tobiano Splash (Ee Aa Rr nT nSpl), and she is after Rune's stallion Gråravn's City of Bones, and our own DER Blue Eyed Meryl.

She hasn't shown much personality yet, mostly just watching us from affare, and stays close to her dam.

THAT LOVELY NEW FACILITY

Finally the building of the rest of our facility has concluded. Got some pictures of the facility taken, and it's very enjoyable to look at it! I am crazy about the colour scheme and the green roofs to match what we had of facilities already.

That meant that I could take Koda out for some barrel training today! She was being such a good girl, though she i probably more of a cow horse because of her heavier build. She wasn't exactly the fastest horse, but then again she hadn't tried it before, so I think she did a pretty good job!

After the training I rode her around the facilities to cool down. She really is such a calm, good girl. I love training with her, because she is always ready and willing to learn.

JUST A LIL' BASIC TRAINING

Today's training was mostly very basic, but not less great for that matter! Koda was out for some basic training in one of our two arenas, and she was being such a good girl. She is very easy for the helpers, and does prefer no rein contact whatsoever, which is indeed very possible as she moves easily for legs and weight.

It's clear that she enjoys being ridden, but most of all taken on adventures! Like when we rode from the arena to the stables just for the heck of it. Very enjoyable indeed!

She really enjoyed a good grooming afterwards! The colours in this picture is slightly sadder though, as our best stallion DER Justa Splash Bomb past away shortly after this picture was taken.

He seemed to have had a stroke of some kind, because one second he was standing, chewing hay happily, and the next he was on the ground in cramps before two seconds later to close his eyes and draw his last breathe. I wasn't even able to get my phone out to call the vet, which was what Mateo shouted I should do. I just was in shook, as my husband tried to get him to breathe again.

Vet came to the conclusion that he had had some kind of stroke. We will forever keep him in our hearts, and hope that RRS Fosmanta - who had been covered by him just a few months prior - will give us a son or a daughter after him.

NEW ARRIVAL

This mare just arrived at our barn. I actually, stupidly probably, thought I had bought a stallion, but it was a mare that arrived. And when I looked at the add for the horse again, it was indeed a mare. Silly me! She is a Quarter Horse though, and she will be the perfect cow horse with a little training I'm sure. Even though she hasn't been ridden much yet.

This baby is named DER Koda, and she is just lovely. I am looking forward to see what it is like to ride her, as the seller told me that she could be a little spooked to ride. We will see one of the next few days I guess.

BENDING IT

Just doing a little fun barrel racing today. We haven't gotten the real barrels to the stable yet, so we just used some old tires, which worked just fine.

Both Larke and I had a lot of fun doing this, and even if Phantom (DER Phantom Force) is quite inexperienced in this, he surely has barrel racing blood in his veins. Didn't take him long to understand how it worked! Larke rode 'her' horse Jammies (OCS That's My Jam), and had a lot of fun with it too.

When she was younger she dabbled a lot in the barrel racing thing, and now she is just looking forward to doing some cow horsing, when she gets slightly older.

When we came into the barn Mateo was working on getting a hay spill off the floor.

"Whatcha doing, darling?" I asked him, not really succeeding in hiding my laughter.

"This stupid horse just spilled hay all over!" he grumbled, though I knew he wasn't exactly angry at the horse. I knew he loved them all, but extra work wasn't exactly his strong suit.

Larke just laughed in the background, before going over to give her dad a great big hug.

Phantom clearly loved when I scratched him, though his butt more than anything.

"Can you bring in some carrots, when you go by the feeding room on the way out?" I called after him.

"Yeah!" he yelled back, and exited the barn with the full wheelbarrow.

Before Mateo got back inside I caught this tender moment between Jammies and Larke. She really loves that mare, of that I am sure! And I also know that right now she cannot imagine riding any other horse. She will have to help with the young curlies in time though, just as Sorine will.

I just hope the twins won't be like the worst enemies for much long, and will make up. It's exhausting with their teenage drama about silly things, even if I know that's just how they are right now and some years forward.

SLEIGH RIDE

Apparently getting a big sleigh for all of our friesians, or at least three of them, was too much to ask for. Lucky we got this small sleigh we could use instead. Yske was perfect at being in front of it, used to it from her old owner and breeder.

It's Sorine on the sleigh, while Larke is the one taking pictures. Mateo tried to give us a little extra speed, but after this picture was taking he fell on his face, not able to keep up with Yske xD

NEW ARRIVALS

Some horses had arrived at Dead End Ranch today. In the correct order it is Royal's Fito, FKE Gilmar, FKE Yske and FKE Itske. They came from a closed down farm nearby, and had nowhere else to go, so we took them in. We will see if they can be schooled into Western horses with time.
