LACY IS CURED! ❤️ #fipsurvivor No pictures, I just wanna play ~ Lacy ❤️ Today is the day I’ve been waiting and hoping for for 168 days. We went through 84 days of FIP treatment (injections) and waited and watched for another 84 days of observation to make sure she didn’t relapse. I am so grateful to @mrspink2015 @scbrvt @sarantaria, everyone at CARES and Celeste Park-Estes for all the advice, medical and moral support. Lacy enjoys the fresh air from the slider in the mornings. And then we went for bloodwork for her FIP because it’s day 59 post treatment and we’re still in the observation stage for another 25 days. Her Albumin Globulin ratio is 0.7 again and there is “no sign of FIP”. Feline Infectious Perotinitis (FIP) is a severe viral illness affecting cats caused by a mutation of the Feline Enteric Coronavirus (FECV). Most strains of FECV do not cause disease and infected cats are often asymptomatic. While infection with FECV is very common in shelters and multi cat households, the occurrence of the mutated FIPV is relatively low. In less than 10% of cats infected with FECV, the virus mutates into FIPV due to an abnormal reaction from the cat's immune system. This mutation is believed to occur independently within each cat. While FECV is highly contagious and found to be endemic in multi cat populations, FIPV is not thought to be transmitted between cats. However the possibility has been suggested to explain the rare occurrence of mini-outbreaks of FIP. The development of FIP is multifactorial. There is a genetic risk factor, which is estimated to account for about 50% of the risk. The other 50% are environmental factors, such as age, the level of exposure to FECV, not receiving passive maternal immunity, as well as stresses such as overcrowding, malnutrition, or spay/neuter surgery and any other factors that might reduce the cat's ability to combat the infection. Since there is a genetic component that contributes to the risk of developing FIP, littermates of kittens that have developed FIP are at increased risk. That scenario may explain why all 4 cats in this litter developed FIP. Although once considered 100% fatal, new anti-viral medications have demonstrated FIP remission in clinical trials. One drug, GS441524, is actually the precursor to synthesizing Remdesevir, the drug from Gilead Sciences being used to treat COVID19 in human COVID19 trials. The treatment period is a daily injection of GS441524, and supportive care daily for 84 days. If after 84 days the cat's FIP markers and labs have normalized, the cat enters the post treatment phase. This phase consists of monitoring the cat's behavior and their FIP markers and labs for signs of relapse. In August, 1968, the country was still reeling from the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. four months earlier, and the race riots that followed on its heels. Nightly news showed burning cities, radicals and reactionaries snarling at each other across the cultural divide. A brand new children’s show out of Pittsburgh, which had gone national the previous year, took a different approach. Fred Rogers had met François Clemmons at a church service after hearing him sing, and asked him to join the show. Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood introduced Officer Clemmons, a black police officer who was a kindly, responsible authority figure, kept his neighborhood safe, and was Mr. Roger’s equal, colleague and neighbor. A year later in 1969 when black Americans were still prevented from swimming alongside whites, Mr. Rogers invited Officer Clemmons to join him and cool his feet in a plastic wading pool, breaking a well-known color barrier. And there they were, brown feet and white feet, side by side in the water, silently, contemplatively, without comment. The episode culminated with Rogers drying off Clemmons’ feet. Most young kids were probably unaware of the real weight the episode carried, its scriptural overtones, but the image of a white man tending to the needs of a black man was seared in their minds nonetheless. 25 years later, when François Clemmons retired, his last scene on the show revisited that same wading pool, this time reminiscing. Officer Clemmons asked Mr. Rogers what he’d been thinking during their silent interlude a quarter century before. Day 28 of Lacy’s FIP treatment. We’re 1/3 of the way there!! Every day of #fip treatment is different. Some days are great, some are not so good. At this point, thankfully, we have more good than bad days. But last night Lacy’s stomach was acting up and I had to give her some anti nausea meds. And today she didn’t want to come out of her cubby. That meant I had to block it off so she doesn’t have that option anymore 😿. She’s not happy about that, but I need to give her meds at certain times and she can’t hide from that.
