How to cope with diaper rash that just wonā€™t go away
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated MichelleĀ to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
Tumblr media
Thereā€™s a particular heaviness that comes from watching your brand-new baby writhe in pain; it sits right on your heart. Even from something as common and expected as diaper rash. No parent wants to unwrap a diaper (cloth, disposable, it doesnā€™t matter), and see a bright red, blistering bum. Itā€™s agony for all involved. And for whatever reason, some babiesā€™ brand-new skin is more sensitive than others.
We could debate the whys of diaper rash and discuss how to prevent it, but hereā€™s the reality: For some mothers, chronic diaper rash is a daily reality, despite the best of intentions and practices. And for those mothers, they just need the rash to stop. Like, now.
While the majority of my diaper rash experience was confined to the teething period, a friend of mine fit into that ā€œchronic diaper rashā€ category with her fourth and final baby, Henry. He was the last in a line of close-in-age siblings, so my friend basically coasted through her pregnancy with the ā€œNot my first rodeoā€ mentality. She thought sheā€™d seen it all ā€” reflux, colic, food allergies, you name itā€” and then here this fourth baby came with a brand new challenge: chronic, relentless diaper rash. Day in, day out.
Tumblr media
The rash was the bane of her existence for the better part of a year. It was the bulk of her Google onlineĀ searching. It was the reason for so many calls to the pediatric nurseā€™s station. Oh sure she tested different diaper brands, was diligent about promptly changing him (in a borderline-obsessive manner), and she had him tested for infections. She even changed her diet. Nothing changed. From the time this baby was born until he was over 12 months old, he often lived with a very uncomfortable rash.
Through the process, my friend learned a few things:
1. Many cases of chronic diaper rash are caused by yeast or bacterial infections, which was a constant source of concern for her babyā€™s doctors. If the rash is especially tender and raw ā€” especially with puss-filled blisters ā€” it could be a sign of something that requires antibiotics or heavy-duty steroid cream.
2. And yet her baby was perfectly healthy, minus a raw tush. It was decided that her babyā€™s skin was just extra sensitive, and her best option was actually using over-the-counter barrier creams rather than loading on something more aggressive, like steroids. According to MayoClinic, the best Ā active ingredient for diaper rash products is zinc oxide.Ā DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength paste has the maximum level of zinc oxide found over the counter.
3. Sometimes medicine is necessary. My friend has a very all-natural, nature-can-heal-all perspective in life, which I very much admire, and which typically is sound and sensible. But this experience really challenged her to step outside of her comfort zone, put away the witch hazel, and accept the help available. True story: My friend truly did use DESITINĀ® Products, recommended by her pediatrician, and the hypoallergenic formula didnā€™t further irritate his sensitive skin.
Thereā€™s a happy ending to the story, though. This now-3-year-old child has an ordinary behind, no longer plagued with rashes, and with no memory of the pain. Heā€™s totally fine. And whatā€™s more ā€” this kid was fully potty trained by the time he was 18 months old. As soon as he could get out of those diapers, he did. Coincidence?

Overcoming stubborn diaper rash, as told by my sister-in-law
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensatedĀ StephanieĀ to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
Tumblr media
One thing Iā€™ve discovered since having my son, Caleb, is that when moms get togetherā€¦ they talk about their kids. Gone are the days of conversations about new purses (unless itā€™s a diaper bag), TV (unless itā€™s a cartoon), and ourselves; these are the days of nonstop baby talk. Diapers, baby food, and new skills always find their way into my conversations nowadays and I canā€™t say I mind! Itā€™s nice to swap stories, tips, and advice, and itā€™s certainly nice to not feel alone as a new parent who sometimes struggles and worries too much. Inevitably, in our quests to not feel so alone, the uglier, messier side of motherhood sometimes creeps into our conversations: blowout diapers, getting peed on for the hundredth time, and of course, the dreaded diaper rash.
Lately, Caleb has been struggling with some major diaper rash. Teething and a cold may to be to blame here and weā€™re working on getting his tush cleared up so heā€™ll have at least one less thing causing him pain. So far, Iā€™ve switched to sensitive wipes, purchased overnight diapers for bed, and have been applying maximum strength DESITINĀ® Cream/Paste (purple tube!) on the regular.
My sister-in-law, Sheena, has two boys. Compared to me, sheā€™s a pro by now having had two babies, so I sought her out for help. I knew that her six month old, Lucas, has also been battling a case of diaper rash so I asked her for some advice on what else I could be doing. Hereā€™s what sheā€™s been doing with Lucas (and why didnā€™t I think of some of these ideas myself?! This is what mom friends and conversations are for!):
ā€œFor a stubborn rash, I would spend some time every day letting the bottom go diaper free and get some air to it. Try to change the diaper more frequently and use DESITINĀ® Cream/Paste with every diaper change. I would wash the bottom with water and mild soap daily ā€“ no soaps with perfumes. Use very soft wash cloths or wipes to cleanse the area too when changing diapers. Once the rash clears, I would still use a small amount of DESITINĀ® Cream/Paste daily and after every bath as a preventative. I use it on their bottoms and groin areas.ā€
I love talking with other moms for a variety of reasons, but being able to put our heads together like this and swap advice is one of my favorite parts about it. I think we will definitely be trying out each otherā€™s techniques to help battle the dreaded diaper rash!

Road Trip Warrior: 3 Tips to Combat Diaper Rash While Traveling
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated VanessaĀ to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
Tumblr media
I remember the days when long road trips were the only way to see our families during the holiday season. Our car packed to the brim, my husband and I would strap our two babies ā€“ both still in diapers ā€“ into their car seats and make a wish for a smooth 5 hour ride. My infant son had extremely sensitive skin, especially around the diaper area, and this proved to be super challenging. Although I did a good job combating the rash while at home, long hours on the road required a new plan of attack.
Tumblr media
After the first dreadful experience, I learned a few things about preventing diaper while traveling. First and foremost though, preventing the flair up is the best plan, since trying to vacation with an irritable baby is so difficult! Here are 3 more practical tips for the chronic diaper rash fighter while traveling long distance during the holiday season.
Change often: To prevent diaper rash, keeping the diaper area moisture-free is the most important rule. And while traveling, this is even more important since your little one is sitting in the same place for extended amounts of time. Take breaks every 2 to 3 hours to change their diaper, regardless if it seems wet or not.
Protect skin: Though you might not be applying DESITIN at every diaper change while at home, it would be a good idea to do so while traveling. The soothing ointment does a great job at protecting your babyā€™s sensitive skin and repelling moisture, which is exactly what you need while combating diaper rash on the go.
Let them air dry: Once youā€™ve reached your destination, everyone needs to chill out a bitā€¦. Including your little oneā€™s diaper area! If possible, remove their diaper and let your baby air out, allowing their skin to be completely dry before reapplying a new diaper.
Combating diaper rash while traveling is not easy task. It largely comes down to dealing with the affected areas immediately, which is even more difficult when youā€™re on the go. Having a great ointment on hand to protect the skin and added love from mama will help your little one combat the discomfort of diaper rash.

Top 3 Registry Items You Donā€™t Want To Forget
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated Erin to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.Ā
Hey expecting Mamas, I see you. Youā€™re excited, youā€™re nervous, youā€™re like, pregnancy glowā€¦ whatā€™s that?!
Most of all, thereā€™s this daunting thing called a registry that has endless possibilities in a world you know nothing about (yet). Take it from a first time Mom to a bubbly little six month old, regardless of the endless Pinterest lists, you will forget things on your registry.
Tumblr media
Here are the top three things I truly needed the minute I brought Sully home and have used every day since:
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  DESITINĀ® Rapid Relief Cream
2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Burp Cloths
3.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Adult White Noise Maker
Little baby bums sure are cute, but diaper rash can creep in on them very quickly. Ever since the first days of having her home, weā€™ve used DESITINĀ® Rapid Relief Cream at every diaper change.
Tumblr media
Poor little Sully had a rash by the time we left the hospital. Go ahead and ensure your sweet new baby is covered (literally) by putting DESITINĀ® on your registry right now. Of all the things youā€™ll have to worry about, ensure diaper rash isnā€™t one of them.
I actually tried out three different brands, but kept coming back to this specific type of DESITINĀ®. Itā€™s thick so it stays on long term and through the messiest of diapers. What really won me over though, is that itā€™s the only one that cleared up even the flaming red, bumpy rashes in just a few days.Ā
Tumblr media
Now, letā€™s talk burp cloths. I had no idea how many of these we would need! We actually prefer the muslin ones that can also snap on as a bib. If your little one spits up as much as mine does, youā€™ll want about 10-15 to keep in rotation.
Last but not least, you definitely should get an adult white noise maker that doesnā€™t ever cut off and has a wide adjustable volume. The baby noisemakers cut off after a certain set of time which would wake little miss Sully up. Once we got an adult one for under $35 offline, she started sleeping better almost instantly.
Tumblr media
Oh how these three little things would have helped, and probably saved some tears, panic, and sleepless nights that you are sure to encounter as a new mother. Looking back on these newborn photos though, it makes you realize how quickly not only they grow, but how quickly you grow as a mother, too.
Cherish every second Mamas, I know you will!

5 Tips to Tame the Diaper Rash That Wonā€™t Quit
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated Vanessa to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
Iā€™ll never forget my baby girlā€™s first summer. She was a chunky bundle of cuteness and, as a new mom, I was eager to spend the months exploring, doing short road trips and teaching my baby about the world around her.
Except she had a chronic diaper rash that would not quit!
Tumblr media
Iā€™d battled diaper rashes before, but this one was different. Like unwanted guests that donā€™t know when to leave, this rash would linger for days and weeks at a time, staying dormant then flaring up without notice. The rash would make diaper changes a nightmare and even impacted my babyā€™s mood. There are few things more frustrating than dealing with a diaper rash that wonā€™t quit. Knowing how uncomfortable your little one is doesnā€™t help, either.
After lots of trial and error as a chronic fighter, I figured out how to beat the pestering diaper rash for good! Here are a few of the things I learned along the way.
Assess what goes in before it comes out:Ā The first thing I assessed when my daughter was dealing with chronic diaper rash was the food she was eating. At almost a year old, it wasnā€™t much. Even still, I wanted to be sure the stuff going into her body wasnā€™t making the stuff coming out to inflict a rash.
Use DESITINĀ® constantly: I canā€™t stress this enough! Baby skin is super sensitive and needs to be protected with a layer of great quality lubricant to keep the diaper area dry and free of moisture.
Stay ahead of the game: Critical to crushing the diaper rash that keeps coming back, change their diaper as soon as possible. Ensuring their diaper area stays clean and dry is crucial for a chronic fighter of diaper rash.
Cleanse, protect, repeat: Beating a persistent diaper rash is truly a test of the most dedicated. Cleanse the diaper area with a gentle wipe or cleanser. Apply DESITINĀ® liberally to protect the skin for irritants and moisture. Then repeat the process as needed and until the rash is banished for good. You can do it, mama!
Take time to cuddle it out: Diaper rashes are no fun for anyone. So after theyā€™ve endured yet another diaper change kicking and screaming, take time to cuddle it out. I promise that this too shall pass. Lower your stress levels and give your little one a smile. Sensing your confidence, baby will relax knowing that mama will win the fight again the chronic diaper rash.
Tumblr media
My babyā€™s first summer was full of fun, memories and plenty of diaper rash drama. We had to make extra stops during road trips, changed diapers in random places and stay stocked up on soothing diaper cream. The pestering rash stayed for awhile, but by following these tips, I was able to kick it to the curb- and so will you.

Nighttime Rash Prevention with DESITINĀ®
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated Claire to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
From the very beginning, my daughterā€™s pediatrician recommended having a consistent nighttime routine. Itā€™s not always easy to keep, but it is so important. Not only does having a step of habits that you do every night help your child realize that itā€™s time for bed (which is crucial for getting them to get their nights/days straight and getting them to sleep through the night) but itā€™s good for the parents so that you have established steps you go through every night and donā€™t forget any important night time activities.
Tumblr media
At 17 months, our nighttime routine for my daughter Maddie Grace is something like this: bath, lotion, brush her teeth, put on a new diaper with DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength Original Paste, read two books, and then itā€™s night-night time. Of course there are some nights that we stray from our routine, and we arenā€™t too hard on ourselves if we forget one step or start a little later than usual one night, but we make an effort to keep to these steps and in this order every night at the same time.
Tumblr media
Our nighttime routine has changed as Maddie Grace has grown. As a newborn we didnā€™t give her a bath every day, and lots of times 90% of our nighttime routine was walking in circles with her until she fell asleep. There were times when she was around a year that she would want to read a bunch of books, and not wanting to discourage her love of reading we let her. Clearly she didnā€™t always need her teeth brushed, and for a while it was necessary that I nurse her for her to fall asleep.
Tumblr media
The one thing that has stayed the same with our nighttime routine as Maddie Grace has gotten older is the fresh diaper and applying DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength Original Paste. No one wants their baby to wake up in the middle of the night ā€“ why chance it happening because of diaper rash discomfort? DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength Original Paste is the strongest available diaper rash treatment available without a prescription, and helps reduce redness and irritation of the skin in the diaper area. In a clinical study, 90% of babies who suffered from diaper rash irritation had noticeable relief within 12 hours of applying the cream. This means your baby and you both sleep longer. Itā€™s magical.
Do you have any tips for establishing a nighttime routine and getting baby to sleep longer at night? Weā€™d love to hear them below!

Tips for Getting Through Nighttime Changes
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated Amanda to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
My son has reached an age where he can make it 4-5 hours during the night without needing to eat. (Hallelujah!) Even when he does wake up to eat, it's only for a quick feeding and he falls right back to sleep. It's the kind of night every new mom dreams of!Ā
It was the "falls right back to sleep" part that took us a while to figure out.
Tumblr media
Let me walk you through this...
We used to change his diaper after each and every nighttime feeding. Those middle of the night diaper changes effectively took our son from being half asleep and full to full and ready to party! NOT exactly what we were going for.
We would endlessly wrack our brains in search of a solution to our middle of the night diaper change issue that was costing us hours of sleep. Ā My son's skin, unlike our older daughters', is not particularly sensitive. It was my daughter's sensitive skin and the fact that she seemed to come out of the womb with a diaper rash that led us to discover DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength. No matter the severity, I could count on the Maximum Strength formula to alleviate her discomfort and treat her rash in a hurry--almost like it was gone overnight. OVERNIGHT! *lightbulb moment* What if I employed that thick moisture barrier for prevention rather than to simply treat a diaper rash?!
Tumblr media
We added DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength into my son's nightly routine that very night. It was my confidence in the product that allowed us to cut the last remaining middle of the night diaper change and still sleep soundly knowing we wouldn't be greeted with a gnarly rash in the morning.Ā
Because we no longer change my son during the night (unless of course we are faced with a poopy diaper), we are extra diligent with our daytime diaper changes. I've found that frequent changes, allowing him to "air out" diaper-less as often as possible, along with using DESITINĀ® during each diaper change keeps my son's booty rash-free!
Tumblr media
I suggest creating several diaper changing stations throughout your home. Doing this will ensure that you always have everything you need easily accessible and you aren't running around trying to find diapers, wipes and DESITINĀ® each time your baby needs a change. At our house we keep a changing basket in the play room, the living room, the master bedroom and each of the kids' bedrooms. Multiple changing stations has seriously been such a stress reliever for us!
Now that Iā€™ve shared my tips, what are some of your recommendations for getting baby through the night? Be sure to share them in the comments or by tweeting @Desitin on Twitter!

Why I Recommend DESITINĀ®
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated JenniferĀ to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
Motherhood isnā€™t easy. Itā€™s amazing, beautiful and funny. But itā€™s not always easy. Having a daughter who just started kindergarten, and a son still in diapers--Iā€™m learning that your fears and worries about them never go away, they just shift.
Tumblr media
When I was pregnant Iā€™d poke my belly when she was still for a while, just to make sure she was still OK. Months after she was born I jumped up in alarm to check on her when she finally slept more than a few hours at night. Later I worried about her picky eating habits, and potty training, and now itā€™s on to friends and drama that come along with starting school.
Years from now itā€™ll be the teenage years, and the time in-between will be full of its own set of worries.
My son is easing into potty training and Iā€™m so ready to be done with diapers and everything that comes with them. Extra baggage to carry around when we go out, stinky trash, and diaper rash.
Tumblr media
Luckily, my kids rarely experienced diaper rash. It was an occasional occurrence if they had diarrhea, or woke up with a poopy diaper. This is a parenting worry I donā€™t have to dwell on much because I know exactly how to battle it.
I donā€™t leave diaper rash untreated. Itā€™s easy enough to slap a bit of diaper cream on their bottoms, knowing itā€™s helping my baby feel better and making it go away. Aside from a prescription, thereā€™s no stronger treatment than DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength.
Itā€™s what my mom used on me and my sisters, and over the years between my kids and kids Iā€™ve worked with at daycare centers, Iā€™ve used a lot of DESITINĀ® myself. Iā€™ve seen the benefits and Iā€™ve seen rashes go from painful-looking to worries no-more.
Now that my youngest is on his way to graduating from diapers, Iā€™ll have one less thing to worry about- and soon enough, many new worries in its place.

An Easy Three-Step Action Plan to Prevent Babyā€™s Diaper Rash
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensatedĀ Michelle to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
It kills me to see my kid in pain, no matter why or when, no matter if heā€™s tiny and helpless or big and vulnerable. But when I think I caused the pain, or at least didnā€™t prevent it? Phhheew. What parent hasnā€™t felt that guilt-wrapped punch to the gut?
Itā€™s the times we clip our newbornā€™s itty bitty fingernails and draw jarringly red blood, or when a new food sparks an allergic reaction, or when we accidentally bang our kidā€™s head against a doorway. (It happens.) Or when we unwrap our babyā€™s diaper and see a bright red bum, all raw and swollen.
Ohhhh my baaaabbyyyy! Mommyā€™s sorry!
Tumblr media
I expected it, I suppose. ā€œDiaper rash creamā€ is included on virtually every baby registry checklist known to man. I didnā€™t know why, exactly, my baby was bound to get diaper rash, but I had my tubes of DESITINĀ® neatly arranged next to his changing padā€¦and thrown into my diaper bagā€¦and stocked in the linen closet. (I got close to a dozen diaper rash tubes at my baby shower; no joke.)
Even still, itā€™s hard to see bright red skinā€” even worse, a blistering, inflamed rash ā€” covering such a sensitive area. And so I became extra vigilant to prevent a rash from forming, or to at least pinpoint the cause of it. I attempted to switch to cloth diapers because I heard it might help. (It didnā€™t last long.) I opted for more natural disposables that promised less rash-causing chemicals. (Which I mostly sortaā€™ stuck with.) I also swore his diaper rash was worse after certain foods.
And more than anything, I was absolutely certain that teething = diaper rash, I didnā€™t even care what Google had to say about it.
Tumblr media
Naturally I brought it up to my doctor (who was all, you should SEE some of the diaper rashes Iā€™ve seen; this is nothing, sister). And Iā€™ll never forget what she said.
ā€œDiaper rash isnā€™t that mysterious; when his skin gets wet and irritated, he gets a rash. Period.ā€
At the time, I didnā€™t appreciate her bluntness, or the (possibly self-imposed) judgment that I wasnā€™t changing him enough. (Iā€™M DOING MY BEST, LADY.) Oh sure there were times when Iā€™d be out somewhere longer than expected, stranded without a fresh diaper, and heā€™d stay in a dirty diaper a leeeettle longer than normal. And what parent hasnā€™t faced the age-old dilemma: Do I wake a sleeping baby or keep him in a slightly squishy diaper? Is it worth the risk of ruining a much-needed nap?
Fine, doc; you win. I had my moments of ā€œinfrequent diaper changing,ā€ but not more than any busy parent. Ā
There had to be more though. What about teething? I knew they were related in some way.
ā€œNope, teething doesnā€™t cause diaper rash,ā€ she said, blunter by the minute. Ā ā€œTeething doesnā€™t cause diarrhea, either.ā€
(But diarrhea does, in fact, contribute to diaper rash. And although my doctor was skeptical that teething was biologically linked to diarrhea, the connection is well documented amongst parents. Some, like Dr. Sears, claim teething can lead to excessive drooling, which can lead to looser bowels, which leads to diaper rash. But itā€™s also possible that gum inflammation can cause a low-grade fever, which might lower the immune system and leave our babiesā€™ more susceptible to pick up diarrhea-causing viruses. Whatever the reason, the connection has been noted.)
Tumblr media
But as my diaper changing years wore on, I could see the truth in the pediatricianā€™s straightforward answer. Maybe it really is as simple as this: keep your babyā€™s bottom dry.
Yeast, another cause of diaper rash, grows in moist and dark environments. Diarrhea contributes to the moist-ness in the diaper region. So, one undeniable cause of diaper rash is sitting in a wet diaper for too long.
Itā€™s not a mystery, folks. In fact, it can be summed up in three short steps:
Step 1: Change your babyā€™s diaper quickly after they are wet or soiled.
Step 2: Even more quickly when diarrhea is involved.
Step 3: And when your baby is teething, apply a light preventative barrier of diaper rash cream because based on my experience, teething = diaper rash, the end.
Be quick. Be prepared. But more than anything, know that the rash probably hurts your heart way more than it hurts your babyā€™s behind.

Treating Diaper Rash When Babyā€™s Sick
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated StephanieĀ to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
Is there anything worse than a sick baby? Yesā€¦ yes there is. Even worse than a sick baby is a sick baby with diaper rash.
I donā€™t know about you, but it stresses me out big time when my baby is crying and doing his famous ear-splitting shrieks. He doesnā€™t do it often, so when he does, itā€™s usually a sign that something is wrong. Lately, heā€™s been refusing to sleep at night, fighting it for hours on end accompanied by those shrieks that could drive any mama crazy. Heā€™s been battling a cold and congestion for a couple of weeks now, which we think may be contributing to his sudden refusal to sleep. As you may have guessed, things arenā€™t particularly fun in our household at the moment! During one of his recent sleep protests, I found myself in his room just after midnight. My husband and I had tried just about everything to get him to sleep but nothing seemed to be working. I decided to change his diaper again just in case it was wet when I noticed some significant redness on his bottom. Because it was midnight and we were all exhausted, I decided to go for the big guns and whipped out DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength for quick relief. While it still didnā€™t put him right to sleep, I did notice significant improvement in the morning when we were all sleep-deprived zombies (but hey, at least the rash was nearly gone! Caleb: 1, diaper rash: 0.).
Tumblr media
Lately, Calebā€™s been having more frequent bowel movements which may lead to more frequent rashes, too. Sickness in a baby, even something as simple as a cold or the flu, can lead to looser stools which then lead to more frequent poopy diapersā€¦ the kind that makes my husband howl in disgust every single time. He tries to convince me itā€™s my turn when itā€™s really his turn. Nope! Anyway, the increase of dirty diapers often turns into more frequent diaper rashes which then lead to more frequent crying which all adds up toā€¦ less fun and more tears (for everyone. Mom included.). Should I go on? I think we all get the picture here. Not only has my baby been battling a cold and the accompanying boogies which he hates (even more when I try to remove them!), heā€™s also being forced to deal with diaper rash at the same time. Because we all prefer a happy baby, I do my best to eliminate all of the issues causing him pain and discomfort, including the diaper rash. When itā€™s a mild rash, we use the regular DESITINĀ®, but when itā€™s a more severe, red rash, we use the Maximum Strength. Both seem to do the trick and we keep a spare in our diaper bag too.
Tumblr media
Thereā€™s really nothing sadder to see than a sick, crying, stuffy-nosed baby. The least I can do for my sick baby is eliminate some of his discomfort by treating his diaper rash since thereā€™s not much I can do for the cold itself. Fellow parents, please hang in there! I know how hard it is for both the baby and you. Be good to your baby and be good to yourself. The cold (and the rash) wonā€™t last forever!

When Diaper Changes Get Wild
This is a sponsored post. The DESITINĀ® Brand compensated Vanessa to be a guest author on the DESITINĀ® Tumblr.
Tumblr media
Summer isnā€™t complete without a fun outing to an amusement park with the family, and the ones with animals tend to be our favorite. Even with long lines and crowds, the joy our kids experience seems to melt all the stresses away. But enjoying a long day with a little one in diapers can come with its challenges!
Tumblr media
We were having a perfect day at the Zoo. Between the hands-on animal experiences and kidsā€™ water area, my babies were having the best time! It was nice having the whole family together too, since my husband is typically too busy at work to join us. One of our favorite features of this Southern California park is the free tram that takes you around the park and teachers you about the various animals at the park. All was perfect, except for one thing: my little manā€™s diaper was about to explode!
Tumblr media
I could see the mess about to ensue and feared the disaster it would make. We were in line for the tram, with people everywhere, but there was no way around it: I had to change his diaper ā€“ and fast!
So I decided to change his diaper right there on the spot: in his stroller. My husband thought I was crazy, and you might too, but hereā€™s how I managed to contain a massive diaper disaster.
Let a sleeping ā€“ or relaxed, happy ā€“ baby, lie. My little man was so content in his stroller and we didnā€™t have time to find a diaper station, so I excused myself and found a shaded spot to take action. By letting your baby stay content, you actually make diapering on-the-go less stressful for you too. Think outside the changing table!
Donā€™t skip steps! Youā€™re in the middle of a diapering disaster and think itā€™s not a big deal to skip protecting babyā€™s skin. I get it; I would too. But if youā€™re spending time outdoors this summer ā€“ especially in the heat ā€“ youā€™ll want to make sure their diaper area is treated well at all times with a diaper cream, like DESITINĀ®.
Laugh it out. Itā€™s just poop, after all. Parenting isnā€™t always easy, but somebodyā€™s got to do it. It was stressful at the time, but my boy and I eventually made it back with the other half of our family in time for our adventure. Find the humor and keep a lighthearted perspective on the situation to reduce your and your babyā€™s stress level during a poopy situation. Donā€™t worry though, this too shall pass.
Looking back at our diaper disaster, I realize how much it taught me about parenting. Accepting your child where theyā€™re at, taking the time to do things properly and learning to laugh at yourself have been key components of my parenting ever since that diaper change.

My, how things change when you become a new parent! And guess the one place youā€™ll now spend a lot of time in? Your diaper changing station.
Itā€™s often an overlooked area of the nursery and, letā€™s face it, itā€™s not the most cute and cuddly part of baby planning either. Yet with just the right touches, this area of your nursery can become your favorite little nook.

So what are some must-haves when assembling your diaper changing station?
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā  A sturdy base. Iā€™m all for multi-purpose items and thatā€™s why I chose a dresser instead of a traditional changing table. This piece has great storage and grows with my baby girl.
2.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Changing pad and cover. There are so many options out there in this category, but I went with a really simple, waterproof changing pad and a cover that matches our crib sheet. Make sure to have backup covers too!

3.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Easy access diapers and wipes. Our diapers and wipes are stored in a top drawer that is easy to reach without having to leave my babyā€™s side (a big no-no when it comes to changing tables). It also helps hide them so diapers arenā€™t the first thing you see when you walk in the room. PS: How cute are these diapers that my girlfriends wrote on during a shower?!

4.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Diapering accessories. We use DESITINĀ® at every diaper change to keep the rash away, plus my little one seems to love it too. I always get smiles when this part of changing comes along which is also why I clip her little toenails here (fingernails I save for nursing). I also sometimes blow her nose here too if needed. A cute basket like this is a great place to store all these small accessories you might need.

5.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Entertainment. Now that weā€™re nearing 4 months, baby girl has gotten very curious. To keep her hands out of the way, I have squeaky soft toys and chew rings in easy reach.

6.Ā Ā Ā Ā  DĆ©cor. I chose to personalize the dĆ©cor in our changing area by hanging art for the city each of us was born in above the dresser. The lamp is great for night or early morning changing when I donā€™t want such a harsh light and a framed invitation from her shower compliments the coral and gold tones of her nursery. Even the flower on the basket was plucked from a baby shower gift!

There you have it, with just these few little must-haves, youā€™ll be surprised at how youā€™ll look forward to diaper changes. Especially when they start smiling, cooing and ā€œtalkingā€ while kicking those little feet!

I do have to add that I am a girl mama and Iā€™m sure for you boy mamas there may be an extra accessory or word of advice on diaper changing. Feel free to share your changing area photos and tips with us on Twitter by tagging and hashtagging(#) Desitin!

Why I Recommend DESITINĀ®

I remember being very overwhelmed with baby products when I first became pregnant with Olivia. Ā From diaper brands to bottle brands, there are SO many to choose from and it can be difficult to figure out which ones will be the best for your child. When it came to a diaper rash cream, we were once again, pretty clueless. As any new parent knows, you generally go with the flow in the very beginning and it can be very hard and stressful having a newborn baby at home.
When Olivia got her first diaper rash I remember thinking, ā€œwhat did I do wrong?ā€ and immediately felt like I had failed at motherhood. I quickly realized that it was nothing that I did wrong, but rather just something that is bound to happen. The most important part is how youā€™ll remedy the situation. I remember talking with a few mama friends of mine and one of them said, ā€œyou NEED to try the DESITINĀ® Maximum Strength diaper rash cream, we swear by it.ā€ Ever since that day, I completely agree with her. We have tried so many different brands and DESITINĀ® wins the race by far.
At the first sight of a little rash, I apply DESITINĀ® with every diaper change and I usually see a huge difference in 24 hours. Itā€™s really amazing and it eases my mind knowing that we can fend off those pesky rashes so easily. Ā
With a second baby on the way, due in early October, you can guarantee that I will be stocked up on DESITINĀ® so that we are well-prepared. Itā€™s definitely a product that is a great baby shower gift to include with any mamaā€™s welcome baby basket!
