I think the most important thing for having fun playing fighting games is to do little tournaments with friends regularly and take the competition there seriously

This is good because it's fun and you get to bond over it but also because it gives you something higher to shoot for than pure ranked performance. In turn that makes it easier to think about ranked and other online play with randos as being a space to practice and experiment rather than erroneously holding it up as the only measure of your skill and value as a player
