i think the same could be applied with the clothes they're wearing

you look at zombies and their grotesque bodies and torn bloodstained clothes and then realize... one morning, they were just people who were picking that outfit out. when they looked in the mirror did they ever think that that was the last outfit they'll ever wear? and imagine every shambling zombie is always wearing a forgotten sign of their own individuality...

A detail I love in zombie fiction is when the humanity in the recently turned bleeds through their ravenous exterior. It serves as a reminder that these things who are ravaging cities and feasting on the living were once people. They were our friends, our families, the people who would converse with us when we were bored, and the acquaintances who baked for us during gatherings, but that was then… now you watch them cry as they kill other people, unable to stop themselves… you hear them beg to be saved when there is no hope for them. They are trapped within themselves, dead but still conscious… suffering until their mind has been killed and all that remains is a sentient corpse.

i never actually intended for her to be a trans woman, since actually. initially she was a trans man! but then as i kept on getting way too obsessed with her over the years, my perception of her started shifting from masc to fem... but i didn't want to erase her transgender identity, so there she is!

seeing her progressing from masc to fem in my drawings is always a delight to see tbh

PART 1: "why is she named that"

so her full name is "ishmael hugo lazaros"!!!

(there's a bonus doodle of her. i love her)

so let's pick and analyze her full name. one by one

so her first name was actually heavily inspired by moby dick! just in case, ishmael is the protagonist of the story. he's a sailor who's interested in whales, and ended up joining (you know it) the pequod. along the way, he goes through unimaginable horrors while... captain ahab is in the background monologuing, basically. that is what i gathered from the story at least

so in relation to MY oc ishmael: i think it really fits her story. she has innocent intentions, joins an organization, and comes out WORSE. what organization she joined will be answered in a second :3

but anyway, (spoilers for moby dick if ever?) ishmael ends up being the last man standing in moby dick, and has to escape from the white whale by swimming away on his boyfriends' coffin. yeah. horrible. this aspect of ishmael will be extended onto oc ishmael's last name:

LAZAROS! i love her last name a lot. so it's mainly inspired by the biblical character "lazarus", and the medical condition that was named after him.

i say (oc) ishmael has a really, really, really strong sense of survival. she would do anything even if it comes at the cost of other people as long as she ends up living/comfortable at the end of the day! and for her inspiration, ishmael from moby dick and lazarus from the bible, i say it's pretty solid.

so with her name, we already have a glance at her as a person. while she starts off as a kind character, she's now a ruthless survivalist who'd do anything to uplift herself. fun!

PART 2, ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: "what's her job"

so in the world of the story, it's basically "what if the philippines was a thousand times worse?"

so imagine: dystopian world where the government is in an absolute totalitarian and dictatorship state where everything and everyone is surveilled heavily by the gov. yep.

and here, there's another group trying to fight it off: the augury. their goal is to overthrow the government and fight for the lives, rights, and people who live in the ph

as for ishmael's job, she works for the government AND for the augury. she effectively acts as a double agent, really. and she's really, really good at it. as in... both sides have no idea that she's playing them both. so that's for her job!

PART 3: "why is she so cool"

idk something about the way lucio clearly just loves animals and how he hated training and how morga said he was never a good hunter and how he ran away from a lame bear even she thought he would be able to fight off. something about caring for animals everyone else seems to disparage, mercedes and melchior were hated and feared by everyone in the palace, camio was seen as an irritating nuisance, the eels, the stove salamander, even. something about a little boy with so much love to give and no humans willing to take it.
