enough reclaiming slurs, I think in 2023 we should reclaim nascar. they banned the confederate flag on all properties & their stance on lgbtq+ isn’t just performative bc in 2013 they fined a driver 10k for using a homophobic slur, condemned indiana in a statement for an anti lgbt law, and partnered w carolina’s lgbt+ chamber of conference in 2022. nascar was founded by anti-cop moonshiners/bootleggers who drove suped-up fords to out-run the police. #yaaascar

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

because I was genuinely curious, I looked up how many babies were born in 1972 in the US. About 3.2 million. Assume about half were AFAB, so 1.6 million. Of those, 63,602 were named Jennifer.
Almost 4% of afab babies were named Jennifer that year, three times as many as the next most common name.
but 71,000 of the amab babies were named Michael.
in the 70s there were:
1 Michael 707,458 Jennifer 581,753 2 Christopher 475,526 Amy 268,996 3 Jason 462,821 Melissa 253,274 4 David 445,842 Michelle 249,138 5 James 444,823 Kimberly 229,106
out of 17,107,561 male births and 16,462,535 female births according to the social security administration. If you wonder why names got weird for a while? THIS is why. GenX had like 20 names, total, for everyone.

CT help, I've been hanging out on reddit and I was just dealt tremendous amounts of psychic damage by a recommended post titled "Does anyone else feel like Grimes is a starseed?" (Apologies if this is the second ask, not sure if first one sent)
If anyone on this earth is a real, genuine, starseed, we all know it's Bjork.

The Saga of Bob: Endgame (hopefully)
This one was awhile coming. Partly I was afraid that if I posted it, the tumor would come back the next day, and partly I had some complications that took awhile to iron out. But here we are, at long last, sans Bob.
You can learn all about how I had cancer in Part One or hit the prior episode at Part Seven.

What is with doctors and painkillers?! Though to her credit, she was like “I am so sorry you’re in pain! Let me write a new prescription!”

(Still not sure if it’s PTSD.)

That last bit was the really scary one. (It was, uh, pretty bad. Never been bedridden before. Don’t recommend it.)

Shout out to Doctor Pinkeye who had it sorted in two business days. Also, when I first reported my symptoms, she said “You never complain about anything. If you say something’s wrong, it is.” She’s a doctor in a million.

Lack of cortisol can cause problems in about twenty different ways, including dangerous levels of potassium and blowing your electrolytes all to hell. It’s actually kinda interesting, in a “wow, look at all the fascinating ways I could keel over!” way.
Honestly, after two months of slowly crashing cortisol levels, complaining about radiation would have felt like complaining over a hangnail. It was boring and I moisturized a lot, the end.
Also there are some quite nice MedicAlert bracelets on Etsy.
Tumblr media
And here is hoping I never have to make another one of these!

Linings also protect the integrity of the main item from sweat and wear.
We're seeing more poorly-made clothes not designed to last. Even when we're willing & able to pay more - there is no better version available, or you have no way of finding it.
Leaving the lining out doesn't just save a few cents on material; it removes an entire stage in production. I understand why companies are doing it; it's one more area where all the pieces have to fit together correctly.
But: Prices didn't drop when they started leaving out the linings.
It's incredible how people have been protesting pants and skirts not having pockets but not a single peep is heard over the fact that skirts no longer have underskirts by default. Underskirts (or lining) was a thing when I was a child, no skirt would be made without lining, you didn't have to think and check if your whole ass is visible in a skirt because lining was a thing!!!! Now most skirts don't and it's simply because it's cheaper, fuck the fact that a customer doesn't want their panties shown in broad daylight, it saves a couple of cents on material.

"love = possession" is literally the founding principle of alloromanticism
No, it's not.
Aside from all the polyamorous people (arguable whether that falls under alloromantic), there are mono-amorous people whose relationships focus on delight in the one they love, not on the fear that that person is going to leave them.
Jealousy is based on fear, envy and greed. All are very common emotions, sometimes even useful, but we don't pretend they're healthy to cultivate in other aspects of daily life.
And it is possible to have healthy single-partner het relationships without them.

I made a post about AO3's recent "turned off guest comments" thing: /748422156856197120
Replies have been restricted. I didn't turn them off. Tumblr is being "helpful." Great.

Lists of facts are not fanworks, no matter how much work it took to assemble the lists.
centreoftheselights is absolutely not "the most popular person on AO3." Their top work has a bit more than 200,000 hits. "All the Young Dudes" has over 13 million; "Manacled" has almost 8 million; "Yesterday Upon the Stair" has over 3 million. The "most popular" people on AO3 are either Harry Potter or Boku No Hero Academia writers.
centreoftheselights's works include analysis, not just data. They don't just post numbers and charts; they explain what methods they used to gather data, what the results mean and why that's interesting.
If you don't understand why your works are considered against the TOS but centreoftheselights's works are allowed... that does not mean your works won't be removed or you won't be suspended.
As always, people who are unhappy with AO3's TOS have the option of posting their content elsewhere.
I am calling bullshit on AO3!

Porn gifs.
And swarms of hostile bot comments like "did ChatGPT write this?" but that wouldn't be enough for them to turn off guest posting.
The porn gifs were, so far, all legal content (...for those who can see adult porn), but they might not stay that way, so... they turned off guest commenting and are looking into options to prevent that in the future.
My guess is (I know nothing official), they'll look into turning off image embeds for guest comments. That takes coding changes.
I just want to know what kind of comments people were getting for AO3 to disable them for guest????
