honestly with how fun and smooth CoH AE has been, I'm having a massive deja vu to back to when the EO HD remasters came out lol.
-Both came during the first half of the year
-Both were announced out of nowhere
-Both are really well made remasters of cool DRPGs from the late 2000s
-Both make so many improvements over the originals but without changing what made them good in the first place.
-i bought the games asap
-i like these games
-i am literally just focusing on the first one in the series again instead of the others, even if the remasters came out at the same time.

-i'm having brainrot rn just ignore this post

Going back to something people actually know about:
If I ever mention Chen, I have to wonder if I should use the "Chen Touhou" or "Chen Yakumo" tag since both are popular, but the latter isn't actually her canon name...
For extra clout i should just use both lol

hey can I get some beginner coh1 tips cause my team miss half their shots and can't afford new pants
No you can't I ran out of tips a while ago...
Tumblr media
So I'm seeing two issues you're having rn, so let me address them individually.
"My team misses half their shots"
Tumblr media
That's actually common for like, level 1. Especially for the Bug enemies you might have encountered - those can only be reliably killed with magic spells, as they have high evasion.
So if I have a tip for that, is that you should run from said bug enemies if you run out of MP, and instead focus on killing other types of enemies such as Blurred Silvers/Golden Deads (the coins basically). Those give both plenty of EXP and Gold.
As soon as you reach Level 2-3, you should be able to hit enemies more reliably with your melee attacks. You can also sleep whole enemy groups with the Doze spell, though its success rate is mixed from what I've tested (It works best on the mole enemies which are another difficult type of enemy in the earlygame).
"I can't afford new pants"
Also pretty common early on, and I feel it's the one thing I get asked about the most about CoH1 (lol).
Any and all enemies you defeat will drop a small amount of gold. But most importantly, they might also drop crafting materials and other items.
These need to be identified, something which can be done at shops at a price, or free by having a Bishop or Alchemist in your party.
If you have either of them, then Identify any and all items you have, then sell all of them. Crafting is not something you should worry about in the earlygame - only when you have a comfortable amount of cash.
If you don't have any, then either create a burner character... Or you could instead find another copy of the item you want to sell.
Identifying at shops costs the same as an item's selling price. But that price remains the same, even if you have more than one of said item.
So, for example, an Iron Junk material can be identified for 1G, which would normally be its selling price. However, you can still identify it for only 1G, even if you have 99 of them - giving you a net profit of 98G upon selling them.
So basically, only identify items at shops if you have more than one of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I mentioned before, you can also focus on defeating the coin enemies. These are most commonly found on Map 18, and besides what I've said, they can also drop Ancient/Magic coins which can sell for 150G.
You can check which map you're in by pressing A (keyboard). Though only if you either use the Sight/Mapor spell or, well, have the physical map of the dungeon you're in.
Tumblr media
In the case of Novice Road, you can actually get a map of it for free by talking to Yuno at the office.
(take that line to heart btw, don't rely on the Mapor spell and especially not in the lategame).
If you're feeling extra stingy: Don't pay the 100G for the Dorms to heal. Instead, have your healer recover their MP for free, then use their spells until everyone's at max HP again.
Also save a lot in case a character dies, as reviving can turn expensive if it fails once (aka the character turns into ash. Though in general you don't want this to happen at all since that's one step away from permadeath).
Now, if you're that desperate for money and somehow all of the above failed:
Make a new character, unequip and sell all their stuff, and transfer the money they get to one of your actual party members. Rinse and Repeat until you're satisfied.
This is the classic cheese strategy most DRPGs have, and it works just as well in CoH1. It's just... slow, though. And I wouldn't really recommend it for a first run, as it might dilute your experience with the game.
Long post, but hopefully this helps you in the earlygame of CoH1!

Ok Now I'm playing AE.
So here's some rambling notes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(1st: PSP, 2nd: AE)
-As was shown before, pretty much the whole thing got retranslated from scratch. Comparing both the PSP and AE scripts, you can definitely tell the first translation amped up some of the NPCs' traits. Though that's not to say the writing itself was originally all that serious - it's still as lighthearted in AE.
Granted, I'm more curious about CoH2's retranslation, given the original's "reputation".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(1st: PSP, 2nd: AE)
-Joule (or Joru)'s portrait is different in AE. I... don't actually know the reason why, but it's a change nonetheless. I'm actually curious as to whether other NPCs have different portraits or not.
-This video was to showcase the Automove feature but there's basically a ton to unpack here. Ahem.
The Automove feature, obviously. You can set out a route for you to automatically take. When I saw a screenshot of it, I was afraid it'd be something broken or unethical to the game design *cough* like floor jumping *cough* . Thankfully, it really is just "walk to X place but automatically", meaning you can't just avoid the dungeon crawling with it.
Music! ...Kinda. You can now customize the whole soundtrack, as in being able to choose which songs play where. The theme you're listening to in the video was actually an unused track from the PSP version, but you can choose any other song as the "Dungeon" theme. This includes tracks from the rest of the series!
Minimap! Rather than just opening the full map, casting the Sight (now Mapor) spell or having an upgraded item lets you see a handy minimap on the corner of the screen. Anti-Magic Zones do disable it, though. Meaning the same rules as the PSP version apply (buy maps).
Tumblr media
-(can't post more than one video per post but trust me,) AE is fast. Animations and Menus alike are sped up tenfold, and you can autobattle now. As a result, both the combat and dungeon crawling experience has become much more smoother than in the PSP version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-New settings, as mentioned before. Besides choosing the soundtrack, you can also disable ambient noises that play every once in a while. Gameplay-wise there's also an Easy mode too, which increases damage dealt by 20%, and also your defense/accuracy/evasion is slightly raised too...
In general this is definitely the better version of CoH1. It and the CoH2 remaster are both really cheap too. For now, I'm going to keep playing to see the other new stuff they added in AE...

Tumblr media
(Read FAoR here)
Kouji Hinako: A stern, yet meek felpier, Hinako is a student of Particus Academy, known for her sword and spellcasting skills. Despite this, there is seemingly no previous records of her.
Hinako is generally reserved, often reading or training by herself and not speaking often. Whenever she is near Rin, however, Hinako instead becomes assertive - annoyed by the human's antics, yet nonetheless wanting the best for her. Hinako's tail tends to puff up as well, something Rin finds amusing.
Hinako is the leader of her own team, aptly named "Team Hinako". Although, her shyness doesn't allow her to take as much control as she'd like...

Age: 18
Height: 166cm (5.4ft)

False Aria of Rebirth. Character Profiles: Rin Alsparda
Tumblr media
(Read FAoR here)
Rin Alsparda: Abandoned at an early age, Rin is a human nomad with no family or home to speak of — her last name being the only clue she has about her lineage.
Because of this, Rin learned how to survive on her own, carrying a handcrafted bow at all times. After a while, she also gained a reputation as a young nomad who traveled across the land, aiding travelers and adventurers alike. This was what allowed Rin to enter Particus' academy of adventurers.
Rin is generally joyful, if a bit slow on her studies, and loves teasing those close to her. She also feels attracted to only girls — especifically Hinako, a felpier whom she has a crush on. Deep down, however, Rin may come off as overly attached to her friends.
Rin is the leader of her own team, aptly named "Team Rin".
Extra Info:
Age: 19
Height: 171cm (5.6ft)
Major: Ranger
Likes: Traveling, Meat, Hunting
Dislikes: Reading, Fish, Staying indoors
Alignment: Neutral Good

(PS: this is for the PSP version)
Bringing this back for anybody curious about CoH1!
(Spoiler-Free) So, I finished Class of Heroes 1...
Tumblr media
...And I loved (most of) it!
For context:
Class of Heroes or Ken to Mahou to Gakuen Mono (剣と魔法と学園モノ) is a Dungeon RPG developed by Acquire in 2008 (2009 for its US release). As the name implies, CoH is a "magic academy" take on the Wizardry game series, which is known for its brutal difficulty and punishing mechanics. CoH is also considered a spiritual succesor of the PS2 Wizardry Xth spinoff games, which feature a similar premise.
Even in Japan, this series is rather obscure, and it wasn't until last year that it "came back" with the announcement of CoH2's Switch remaster and Adventure Academia, an RTS/SRPG hybrid spinoff.
I came across this game after an artist I followed started talking about it. I was feeling burned out by more modern DRPGs at the time, thinking they were "too safe" with their ideas and game design. So, I got the game upon knowing it borrowed many mechanics from Wizardry, and it was such a breath of fresh air after so many games which I just couldn't get into.
As for the story:
Tumblr media
Class of Heroes is rather lighthearted all things considered, that with the story not taking itself as seriously. Though there are some serious moments here and there (some I'd say are rather effective), the tone of the story remains fairly upbeat - particularly in its quests, which can get absurd after some point.
Labyrinths containing immeasurable treasures and monsters have appeared across the lands. Nobody knows when or how they were created, but their existence motivated many to become adventurers. As a way to help those wanting to explore, adventurer academies have been built to train people in the various aspects of adventuring.
Thus, your characters enroll at the newly built Particus Academy in hopes of becoming full-fledged adventurers.
You slowly learn more about the world and how it works as the game progresses, but various aspects are left to the player's interpretation. Just like many other DRPGs, this game promotes creativity and being able to use the characters players make as a way to imagine their own stories. Certain game mechanics further enforce this, like Affinity - how much a character gets along with others, something which slowly increases as they stay in the same party or perform combined attacks.
Though CoH1's story is not a serious one (which can admittedly be grating to some), the amount of customization and freedom when it comes to character creation allows it to be a pretty immersive experience. I had a lot of fun thinking of stories for each of my characters, even if they weren't necessarily tied to the actual plot (*cough* i wrote a fanfic for this game *cough*). After a while, I even did things like forming a second party to act alongside my first one, something entirely unnecessary, but very entertaining to do at the same time.
Overall, it works for what it is, and it's derivative enough for you to write around it, but don't expect it to go beyond that.
As for the gameplay:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mentioned the Wizardry series a few times before. It's a series known for its almost insane difficulty, with most enemies being able to destroy parties on their own, inflict hard-to-cure ailments with their mere normal attacks or even drain their levels with them. Combined with mechanics such as permadeath, many traps that can and will kill one or more characters, and party wipes forcing you to create an entirely new one from scratch, it makes for an unforgiving, yet insanely satisfying series only meant for those with enough dedication.
Everything I just described is in Class of Heroes, just in a slightly lesser manner.
Permadeath is still present, but the chances of you losing a character forever are largely reduced. Enemies can and will wipe entire groups, but so will your characters once they're strong enough. Traps that would otherwise be lethal aren't as threatening or outright don't exist anymore, and so on.
This does not mean CoH1 is an easy game, not at all. You Will die a lot more than any non-DRPG, and each trip you make will have to be planned beforehand with the right items, equipment and parties. The thing is, it's willing to forgive one or two mistakes, with stronger characters and a bigger emphasis on customization - allowing you to constantly reclass characters and gain access to more spells, stats and HP as you progress through the game.
Fittingly, CoH1 can be seen as a gateway entry to Wizardry-Styled games: not as streamlined as say, Etrian Odyssey, but not as punishing as the actual Wizardry titles either. It's the perfect mix of both new and old, with challenging combat and dungeon design, but with the ability to almost always get the tools you need to survive. Behind the cute art style and simple premise is an intense, old-styled DRPG where every encounter can be lethal, and every tile you step on can potentially leave to a character's death.
And I love it, for the most part. I keep saying this, but difficulty always adds more to the immersion, as it forces you to plan ahead and around each obstacle the game gives you, and it leads to experiences you'd never get in other genres.
As for cons:
This game can get rather cryptic at times. It's expected from one meant to closely emulate Wizardry, but there are still some mechanics simply left vague or unexplained altogether. If you want to 100% the game, be ready to reset a lot, for there are certain enemies you only fight once yet drop unique items you won't find anywhere else. It's not necessary, but it can be annoying to deal with if you're a completionist.
Backtracking can also be annoying after a while. The longer you progress, the further away from Particus Academy you will be. Though there are other academies, and every dungeon has at least one town at its exit for you to rest, certain missions and quest will require you to go from point A to point B, meaning you'll have to retrace your steps on every dungeon in-between said points, which can get monotonous. Thankfully, this can be offset by teleport spells and an item that outright lets you choose which town you'll want to go next. The latter is not easily available, however.
Lastly, dungeons sometimes "share" certain floors. By that I mean one floor can appear in more than one dungeon. This might sound terrible at first, but after you finish mapping said floors at least once, you Are able to skip them altogether the next time you see them. There are 78 maps in total, and this game is already very long (Took me 130~ hours to fully beat with 100% map and quest completion), so this surprisingly isn't as big of an issue as it sounds.
So, in conclusion:
Tumblr media
Class of Heroes 1 has been a very fun, challenging experience, though not one that everyone can simply jump into and expect to finish immediately. It's a wizardry-styled title in every sense of the word, and you will die more often than not. I heavily recommend it to anyone trying to get into older DRPGs, and otherwise people who are interested in games with character creation as the main focus.
Pros:
An amazing amount of customization, with 40 different portraits, 10 races and 15 classes (or majors, as they're known in-game) for you to choose.
Challenging encounters and dungeon designs, but not overwhelming either
The ability to gather materials and craft new equipment, allowing for some very strong characters early on if you're lucky.
Cons:
Music is alright, though it's not exactly present either. Some themes are really good, but the variation itself is lacking.
RNG drops can get annoying, though for quest items they can be mitigated via item disassembling. Worse, however, are drops you can only get once in the entire game.
Backtracking to a previous town/academy can prove annoying during the mid and lategame.
Overall, I can say I enjoyed Class of Heroes 1 a lot. It helped me get into the Wizardry series, and thanks to it, I'm a bigger fan of older DRPGs than ever before. I'll definitely check out CoH2 soon!
(It's worth mentioning that, in 2018, this game got a remaster on Switch with Anniversary Edition, adding QoL features and even more customization regarding character appearance and voices. Unfortunately, it was never translated, but it's still there if you are fluent in Japanese).
