Every year I do an illustration of one of my fave comic characters, Jean Grey/Phoenix, as kind of a marker for how much I’ve improved that year. 2016 was a tough year for a lot of reasons, and artistically I certainly felt like I was not doing my best, and not achieving what I wanted to, but also changing my work a lot. I spent a lot of time obsessing over how other people did their work or achieved their successes and it got in my head!!! I’m entering 2017 with a fresh start and a fresh determination to trust myself and my instincts.

Who doesn’t love powerful women? Jean Grey started out as Professor X’s darling student, who could move objects with her mind. Books, levers, furniture. All sorts of useful stuff. She starts being able to read minds too. Her boyfriend, Cyclops - totally cool with that. Then comes a trip into space. Who knew that flying through a solar flare could give a girl such a makeover? (see: Fantastic Four) Suddenly she’s casting fire and rearranging molecules. Wow! But not to worry, she’s still Jean. Not some fiery avatar of a passionate space god. Right? Hey, let’s just focus on the now. A butte in the desert. She takes off Cyclops’s visor. His terrible optic blasts? She turns ‘em off. It’s that moment you wait for, when the characters in a story are really, really happy. What could go wrong?
