Back to school! A fitting time of year to share this—my first painting for the movie back when it was a version called TMNT: The Next Chapter almost 3 years ago. There wasn’t a completed script at the time but we were pretty certain it would predominantly take place in high school so I was asked to tackle the classrooms and more. My assignments were to design the sets but I put a lot of extra effort into describing the vibe and style of our movie through a ton of research on nyc high schools and going for that first day of school feeling.
Director: Jeff Rowe
Production Designer: Yashar Kassai
Art Director: Lauren Airess
I’m sharing all the art my peers post on my IG stories, please check them out everyone is INCREDIBLY talented!

Superfly's home base for the TMNT: Mutant Mayhem movie! I based this location on the Arthur Kill ship graveyard in Staten Island. It was really fun painting in the existing boats there and figuring out the type of ship that felt right for Superfly and family. Included some sketches of other ideas I had for the set.

A painting I made for the TMNT: Mutant Mayhem movie! I designed this bodega for the scene where the turtles have to grab groceries around town. I hid the turtles and even a couple bodega cats in there that accidentally look like the ones at my house.
If you like looking at visual development art, I'll be posting my turtles stuff and sharing the art of all my friends who worked on it in my ig stories @hi_garrett thanks so much!

Early concepts for the robot transports in The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. A dense energy track, a transport with a circular QR-like code as dashboard interface, and a bunch of steering controls. I tried to think of unusual designs that would seem intuitive to a robot but alien to a human like Rick Mitchell.

Robot Transports This is how the robots and Mitchell family in The Mitchells Vs. The Machines get around the transformed PAL Labs. Robots pasted in for scale. There were a lot of design iterations and the clean and simple look seen in the last image matched the Pal Labs design language the best.

More little background items for The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Some ideas for things laying around Katie’s room. This was my first assignment on my first day—started off easy on some cups and books to clue me in on the style. Our production designer, Lindsey Olivares, pushed me to go looser and less polished to give the 3D artists room to interpret. A note that I still think about today. Lots of references here.

I did a bunch of minor background elements for The Mitchells Vs. The Machines movie. Stuff behind the characters you’re not supposed to notice but make the world feel real. Here are some buildings I pitched for the town outside of Pal Labs based on some real places across California.

🤖Robot City Perimeter🤖
Where the transformed Pal Labs meets the human world in The Mitchells vs The Machines movie. I pitched around 60 ideas for this area, so here’s a few to show how the design began to take shape over the course of the week. Also that’s the Mitchell family in their Pal robot disguises down there!

A sporting goods store for The Mitchells vs. The Machines movie on Netflix. This scene was cut from the movie, but at one point the Mitchells were going to stop in here for some supplies and weapons to defend themselves. If you haven’t checked out the movie yet, please do! Lots of very passionate people in every department worked their asses off to create this special movie. I’ll share more art soon once I get my files together.
