Broken social contract, broken covenant

Jumblr, if you haven’t already, you really need to watch and/or listen to Kimberly Jones (video) and Trevor Noah (video). If you’re confused about why some people are rioting and looting, these videos place those behaviors in the broader context of the broken social contract with Black Americans.

As a people whose spiritual tradition is rooted in a covenant, that reality of a broken contract should speak loud and clear to Jews everywhere. Think about the times in Jewish history when it seemed like our own covenant had been broken. Sit for a moment with the feelings that arise.

Some of those things you might be feeling—grief for the lives ruined and lost, rage at the injustices done to you and your people, despair at your utter helplessness to change it, relief that it’s not worse, guilt for being too scared or too tired or too hurt to do more than survive, shame for the physical and cultural features that mark you as Other—is the kind of collective trauma Black Americans carry around all the time. It’s trauma we’ve been carrying for generations.

The social contract is broken. The covenant has been broken.

It might make you wanna set some shit on fire.

Let me tell y’all something. You would never EVER in your life circulate a video of a white man or woman being killed. You would NEVER subject any person to seeing a white person (who y’all already view as more human) be killed or mutilated or threatened. Why is it that Black people are different? Are we less human? Is our pain and suffering less real, so you need examples? So many Black people were killed THIS WEEK alone, and you want to justify sharing videos and pictures of their deaths? Like, honestly, ask yourself, would you do the same to a white person? What is it, activist? Come on, leftist, tell me what’s up.

I’m sorry I don’t care if it makes me an insensitive little Jew , if you come across a Mezuzah scroll or WHOLE TORAH SCROLL DO NOT SELL IT ON EBAY!????

Like I understand some of this can and is often fake, but it is so very clearly (particularly for the second pic) that y’all are actually selling sacred items Jews pay sometimes hundreds of dollars for over EBay for 70 bucks.

And let’s not forget some of this stuff has to be buried! If a Mezuzah scroll (not case!!) or Torah scroll is damaged it must have a Jewish ritual burial. This is so wild but not that uncommon. Please reconsider selling this type of Judaica online. Siddur I can understand but Mezuzah scroll and Torah scrolls???????

This shouldn’t be a hot take: Rabbis should have an obligation to deny Ex-Nazis conversions or entrance into the Jewish community. Period.

I don’t ever wanna read another article of a Nazi converting to Judaism and then pretending like everything is alright. It’s not. I particularly hate the articles where they find out they have some Jewish heritage and there sole reason for conversion/coming to the Jewish community and not being a Nazi is realizing they, too, will be targeted (because it shows desperation rather than actual growth from that hateful ideology. Being comfortable with the ideology until it no longer benefits you)

I just finished the first episode of Hunters and I fucking loved it. Like it was really really fucking good and honestly fucking cathartic to watch the one nazi get killed. (No spoilers) I just hope the thesis of this show is not that hunting nazis makes you anything but a hero. I don’t think it’s going there though tbh especially since Jordan Peele is a. A Black man who fucking knows what oppression is and isn’t making this show for shits and giggles and b. The genius behind Get Out, which did not at all apologize for or humanize white oppressors and even called out the racism behind white liberalism. I trust him with this sensitive story and topic completely. I hope I continue to love the show and I’m pretty sure I will. I’ll post more as I watch more

I’m just realizing why this post is blowing up with all kinds of non-Jewish people on Tumblr.

When I read this post, I think about Christians inserting themselves into the narratives of the Tanakh, and intentionally mistranslating and decontextualizing things in order to shoehorn Jesus in and validate their religion and convert people. I think about Christians trying to take away my relationship with G-d and saying that THEY are the chosen people now. I think about Christians trying to say that THEY worship a god of love, but Jews worship the “Old Testament” G-d of fire and brimstone. I think about the harmful Evangelical movement I grew up in, the Messianic movement, which twists holy verses from the Tanakh to trap Jewish (and gentile, but mostly targeted at Jewish) people in bondage. How they try to pervert our OWN holy writings in an effort to erase our religion.

When most people in a Christian dominated culture read it, they think about Christians using verses from the Tanakh to oppress and control people, specifically the verse in Leviticus 18 which has been interpreted as prohibition on homosexuality and used to justify the humiliation and death of so many.

And you know what? Both are correct. I have also had that verse used to twist and destroy parts of my life and my self. I understand.

But please know that the original spirit in which I shared this post was not just as a queer person who has been oppressed by Christians, it was as a JEWISH queer person who has been oppressed by Christians in many ways, using MY OWN BOOK.

Gentiles, do not use this post as an opportunity to hate on all religions.

Christians, do not use this post as an opportunity to proselytize.

I love my family, don't get me wrong. and I'm half Jewish (patrillineal) so we do a chrismukkah kind of thing, and my mum (because I am into fashion history and theatre design) got me a small book of Coco Chanel quotes which... is a nice gesture.... but me and my sister had to really reinforce that like mum no she was a really bad person, famous nazi collaborator and snitched on god know how many Jews, so like.. I do appreciate it but jfc that was weird
