“Shouldn’t we be heading to your game soon?” you asked, turning to look at him from the passenger seat.
He gave the cutest pout as he turned the car into the parking lot of your favorite fast food place. “But I’m hungry! We should always eat after working out!”
You rolled your eyes and laughed as Changbin turned off the car. He wasn’t entirely wrong, but the soccer game he had was earlier than usual, which would mean there wasn’t much time between your regularly scheduled gym session and lunch. It would definitely have to be a quick bite and then getting back in the car to drive to the soccer field.
He had come around to your side of the car just in time to help you step out, then close the door behind you. He may be silly and teasing at times, but he always made sure to be a gentleman and was always extra sweet when it came to you.
It was your usual lunch joint, and luckily they didn’t seem as busy today so you would be able to get your food faster. There was an open booth towards the back - Changbin said there was plenty of time to sit and eat together before heading out. He sat across from you as you slid the tray of fries between the both of you and began to eat.
“Y/N gets to be my lucky charm today!” Changbin said as he wiggled in his seat. “We will definitely win our game!”
You laughed as you picked up a fry and tossed it at him. “Calling me your lucky charm because I lost to you in ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ doesn’t make me so lucky…”
I missed seeing you

He pouted at you again before justifying why it made total sense that you were destined to be his lucky charm. You couldn’t help but let him win this debate. He has been so busy for the last few months that your time with each other was limited, it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that your schedules aligned to start going to the gym together again.
You were realizing, little by little, that there were things you had missed. His laugh, his teasing, and his words of encouragement. Although this didn’t stop him in your text messages to each other, it’s a different feeling to hear it from him. While he was happily munching on your shared fries, you dared a chance to look at him while he checked his phone. When you realized your heart was fluttering, it dawned on you on what the feeling was. You could feel your ears turning red as you tried to focus on something other than Changbin.
Changbin looked up as he heard your fingers shuffling in the tray of fries. Your face was turned to the side as you looked out the window, your one bright red ear on display for him to see, along with the perfect side profile of your face. Although he would message you from time to time that he missed you, you had always taken it as friends. You always thought it was him missing hanging out with his friend, which you had definitely felt the same, but… the way he was looking at you now could have suggested something different.
After quickly finishing off the fries and cleaning up your table, it was time to leave and make your way back to his car. When Changbin had opened the door for you to walk into the parking lot, the wind had picked up, and leaves and flower petals were in a flurry everywhere. You wrapped your arms around yourself to try and block out some of the wind as you began walking through the parking lot, until you felt something big and warm wrap around you from behind. Changbin was right there, draping his jacket around your shoulders and bringing you into his side to share in his warmth.
“Ahh, my lucky charm is cold! I’m here to warm you up!” he said with a wide grin on his face. You could notice a slight blush on him too, slowly matching your ears.
You let out a soft laugh as you looked back at him. “Ah, thanks. I can use this like a blanket,” you said as you let him lead you to the passenger side of his car.
“You can keep it for as long as you want,” he said as he opened the door for you. After you had sat down he closed the door and came around to the driver’s side. He looked at you for a moment before reaching out and picking a stray petal that had landed on your hair.
You were the light in the shade

The drive to the field was enough for you both to sing to a handful of songs. Somewhere during your mini car concert, your hands came together and fingers interlocked, and it seemed so natural that neither of you had noticed. It wasn’t until you noticed his thumb gently rubbing against yours that you looked down and saw his hand holding yours.
For the day in which we'd smile facing each other
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh (Yeah, yeah)
As much as you've waited
I'll hug you with my whole body
At the next red light he turned to quickly smile at you. “I hope this is okay… but if you don’t want to-”
“No, Changbin. This is…” You couldn’t help but roll your eyes as he did a little shimmy in the driver’s seat. “This is more than okay.”
He quickly pulled into the parking lot and you both stepped out after the car was turned off. Before making your way to the field, he pulled you in for a hug, his arms completely wrapping around you. You felt him sigh as he rested his head on yours, and closed your eyes to commit the moment to memory.
“Yeah!” he yelled, jolting you out of the soft moment that you both were sharing.
“Changbin!”
You were about to smack him for being so loud but he had already let go and was running away from you. You ran after him yelling his name. He may have been calling you his lucky charm for today’s game, but maybe he was the lucky one since you couldn’t chase after him on the field once his game had started.

“Busy” was the only word you or Jeongin could think of to summarize why it has taken so long for both of you to meet again. In the beginning it felt like fun and games, before it started to sink in that maybe it would be a long time before you would see him again.
Days turned into weeks, then weeks turned into months. The weather started to get colder and the sight of couples around you made you feel a bit lonelier than usual. It was weird to have that feeling, considering you and him were just friends.
Just friends, right? That became your mantra every time you felt your heart twist in a certain way.
Even though you hadn’t seen each other for a very long time, Jeongin never failed to message you at least twice a day - once to say good morning, and another to say good night. When his schedule would permit, he’d be able to respond back to you and sometimes would be able to have a short conversation with you.
The last conversation you had with him was both hilarious and heart wrenching - you both were reminiscing about your trainee days because he was filming in the area where you, him, and other trainees would frequently go after classes to unwind. Ironically, the area was only 20 minutes away from your apartment.
Y/N: Oppa, you’re so close but we can’t even see each other! When can we hang out again?
I.N: Let’s hang in there for just one more day.
That one day turned into months… again. You resorted to being happy seeing him on shows, his online content, and listening to his singing. The regret and bitterness of not making it during your trainee days began to sink in even more though, wondering if you wouldn’t be feeling like this if you had made it through and debuted with them.
There was a period when Jeongin had stopped messaging you, but you knew it was because his schedule was probably jam packed. It was close to the holidays and you still hadn’t heard anything from him, so you had messaged him a quick “happy holidays” but never received a response. The last thing you wanted was for him to feel obligated to message you back, so you just left the message as is, and stopped checking ever since.
Fast forward to the new year, and the weather was beginning to warm up. Jeongin did in fact message you several times, but you didn’t respond in fear of bothering him. If the news was anything to go by, you knew how busy he was getting, and his time must have been precious to him.
I.N: Y/N, where are you?
You saw your phone light up on the table when his message came through. You thought for a moment before deciding to finally reply to one of his messages.
Y/N: I’m at home, where I have always been.
The few minutes between your message and his felt like an eternity, but his response had you slightly confused:
I.N: At times, I was afraid. I didn’t think you’d ever come again.
Y/N: Oppa, you’ve been so busy, I didn’t want to bother you!
I.N: You can never bother me. Talking with you helps me to relax from our schedules.
His message made you smile, and a familiar warmth that you hadn’t felt in a while began to fill you again.
Y/N: This winter has felt a bit colder, but I’m glad it will be over soon.
I.N: I wonder if the cold days were difficult. Did you stay warm?
Y/N: As best as I could. It’s not the same, like when we used to share jackets and blankets.
I.N: Haha, I miss that. And you.
You had to read that again, but before you could say anything, Jeongin had messaged again.
I.N: Do you think I don’t know how you felt?
…Busted.
I.N: Knock knock.
His last message confused you, until you had heard physical knocking at your front door. You quickly walked over to open the door, and was surprised to see Jeongin standing in front of you.
It had been so long, and feelings you had tucked away began to surface again. You realized you had really fallen in love with him, never fell out of it, and you were just… waiting for this moment.
You both looked at each other for a moment, as if trying to register that this was really happening. Slowly but surely, his smile grew across his face as his eyes began to twinkle. He offered his hand to you, and it was as if you knew what he was asking. You silently took his hand and responded with a bright smile of your own.
So I’ll tightly hold your hands
No matter what moment comes
I won’t let you go

Over The Rainbow
I stumbled upon Dongmyeong’s cover of Over the Rainbow and I could not get this out of my head. It’s been a while since I have written, so please forgive any mistakes!

Story under the cut:
The party was slowly winding down as a man in a suit approached the grand piano. The sound of numerous conversations happening around him became background noise as he rested his hands on the keys. He began to play a familiar tune. A few heads turned toward him as he played, but they all eventually went back to their own conversations.
Except for one.
She approached the man slowly, her heels softly clicking on the floor.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby
His voice flowed through her like honey, the tone and the soulfulness of it luring her in even closer. When she had made it to his peripherals, he turned his head slightly towards her and gave a small smile.
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
She rested her arm against the side of the piano as she closed her eyes, taking in the music that began to surround her. It evoked memories from the past, and a tinge of hope for her future. A soft smile made its way to her lips as she opened her eyes again, her gaze landing on the man in front of her. There was meaning behind this song for him, too, which was why he decided to play it.
He didn’t think he would have seen her here, and she thought he would never hear him play again.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh, why can't I?
Even though he had finished the song, he continued to play a soft melody on the piano. At some point she had moved to sit next to him on the bench, and rested her head against his shoulder. It was a familiar feeling for both of them, something that seemed to always happen naturally.
‘Is this the last time?’ they both thought as they sat there.
As he played the last note, time seemed to stand still as they continued to sit there. His hand came down to rest where both their legs met, and as if it was a natural reflex, she linked their arms and held his hand. Neither of them wanted to move, but they knew eventually they would have to disturb the peaceful moment they shared.
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?
He opened his eyes as he heard her sigh softly against his shoulder. The feeling of her hand began to disappear as she let go, and moved to stand from her spot next to him.
“Y/N,” he said, looking up at her. He could tell she was holding back her tears, but managed to smile back.
“I hope to see you again soon,” Y/N replied softly.
There wasn’t much he could do as she turned to leave, her silhouette blending into the crowd. He stood up and stepped away from the piano to find her one last time, only to look out one of the windows, finding the bottom of her dress trailing behind her as she entered a taxi.
“Soon,” he said to himself, readjusting his coat before letting himself blend back into the party without her.
