Indefinite hiatus.
I’m not going to lie about it, I’m pretty devastated. I can’t take my laptop to a repair shop until this coming Friday and I don’t have a great deal of confidence. It all happened overnight so I don’t have the funds for a massive repair or a new laptop if repairing isn’t recommended, so I’m kind of stuck in a situation of not being able to do anything about it which is also a sucky feeling.

I don't remember being extremely active when I first started writing for Aerith proper, I was shy and I was close to my Tumblr hiatus, so let's say I was active for 1 year and then returned in 2020. So about 5 years of posting.
That's as if I posted 2 times a day on average which makes me feel a little better when I decide I'm banging on my keyboard haha.

All Ifalna could do was shake her head with an endeared smile. Glenn really thought it was a normal thing to drag a child to the beachfront at nightfall when all the adults in the group were distracted. It screamed of their gap in maturity — even if a very small part of her was curious about the nightlife of a tropical resort town, her daughter would always come first.
And she was incredibly wiped out herself. Those quiet hours were a slice of heaven. Aerith didn't fuss at all, she bathed when she was told, had her dinner and very nearly fell asleep at the table. Ifalna even scooped her up to carry her cuddle bug to bed, easily settling her. No doubt she was going to spring awake early in the coming morning.
Perhaps Glenn would have to bunk in Matt and Lucia's room if he wanted some peace. His bed was in the same room as hers this time around, but Gaia knew Aerith wasn't going to tiptoe around like a mouse for the sake of an adult trying to sleep off a fun night.
Though rather than worry about this or that, Ifalna indulged herself a little, and simply relaxed in with a book. It was a rare luxury to be able to simply read. Her life was so often filled to the brim, being on the run was intense without planned breaks, so she took these 'me time' opportunities like the gifts that they were.
Some hours later, she heard what sounded like a group returning to the inn. It made her pause and listen out... sure enough, Green Matcha Tea had returned, surprisingly a lot sooner than she would have expected.
"Glenn?" Ifalna whisper spoke back to him, in a tone coloured by amusement. She was ready for some wild story, a retelling of his night or that Lucia might bunk in with the girls instead.
What she hadn't expected were the pleas for her to come out with him, or how he knelt and gently lowered her book out of focus. Her eyebrows leapt up closer to her hairline and her lips parted around a shocked little smile. It was all kinds of absurd, the words that spilled from him. A protector not doing his job, so one drink at his side, Matt and Lucia would be shoved into a room that wasn't their own to babysit.
No was her reflex answer. But she laughed a small breath as he held up his fingers, corrected it to just one, and suddenly bestowed her with flower necklaces from the mane he had been gathering. Her own lips spread in a wide grin and she dipped her head, a hand coming up to briefly cover her lips.
Tumblr media
"You make a very good argument, mister Lodbrok." she conceded, then glanced to where his friends idled. Her gaze softened as though she wordlessly asked them if they were sure about this, and a small 'go on' gesture from Lucia prompted her to look Glenn in his eye.
"Oh." The reminder she promised to live was admittedly a weakness, one that fully tipped the scale. "Alright. One drink won't hurt. But only one." Ifalna shuffled forward and placed her book aside on a small table, her hand very gently placing into Glenn's for him to give her a hand up.
In the background, Matt sighed and handed some gil over to Lucia who was grinning ear to ear.

Costa del Sol was not what Ifalna expected — she imagined a beach would be quiet and relaxing, but the bustling tourism made it feel so alive. Which wasn’t a bad thing at all, it meant being able to blend in with more opportunities to do activities with Aerith. The downside?
Come the end of a full day, when she was more prepared to start winding down, the nightlife started to rear its head. Loud vibrant music, colourful alcoholic concoctions and groups of young people seeking to escape their daily lives and the constant looming cloud of the war with Wutai.
“You go.” she insisted with a smile, shooing Glenn with a quick flutter of her hands. “I’m not dragging Aerith to a beachfront bar of all places, and I’m not taking this opportunity away from Green Matcha Tea. You have well and truly earned a night of fun. We’ll be fine — now shoo! Don’t make me use the broom!”
She insisted - and yet Glenn stumble down the steps of the small Inn they were staying at and turned around again to give Ifalna one last pleading look. he really wanted her to come with them. It wouldn't be too wild! Aerith could play at the beach with some other kids that were dragged out that late and then sleep in a hammock in their sight. Easy, right?
Maybe he still was a little too simple when it came to minding a kid.
Though on Ifalna's insistence, the trio left. It was fun, no doubt about that. So much, they could almost forget the horrid situation they were in currently. Almost. It was a little like a drug. Everyone around them was there for fun, the drinks were good and so was the food. The company, the warm sand under their feet. The flickering torches when the sky above shone brightly with stars and the sea was all pitch black apart from the moon's reflections. The waves could still be heard, if barely, over the music.
Still. Something was missing. Someone.
He had no trouble at all being talked up by several ladies, but somehow... he had lost his usual flirty comebacks. He was more careful, stepping around advances with a joke or with stories. A slipped up "I have someone back at the Inn." that had Matt and Lucia exchange looks with highly raised eyebrows.
Glenn had no idea how much time had passed when he stumbled back to the small Inn alongside Matt and Lucia. He was... he would call it tipsy. Just a bit. But alcohol seemed to just triple his usually good mood. And his courage. Lucia and Matt had exchanged looks and comments Glenn couldn't hear. And they had agreed - they were exhausted, they'd stay back to unwind a little before bed. So they could also watch over Aerith - and Glenn could attempt to drag someone else down to the sea.
"Ifalna?", he whispered - a little too loud. She was still awake, seemingly reading. Glenn entered her room carefully, eyes darting to little Aerith sleeping on the bed. She was all tuckered out after a day of playing at the beach all wild under the sun.
Getting down on one knee in front of her, Glenn tried to pry the book down a little.
"Ifalna, you have to come with me. I'm fucking up protecting you, you know? I have to be at your side.", he continued his urgent whisper, a little too bubbly and excited, as if they were kids sharing a secret, "Just one drink, okay? One. Matt and Lucia stay here... they watch Aerith."
Tumblr media
He lifted one finger as if to emphasize the ONE drink, though for a splitsecond he had lifted up two, squinting at his own hand.
The grin on his face was charming, he had returned with way more flower-necklaces than he had left with. Taking two off, he simply laid them around Ifalna's neck.
"See. Now you have to go - everyone with those is down at the beach. And while I promised to protect you... you promised me to live. And now you gotta live a little. So... come with me?"

LIGHT!
🥺 I’m touched. Thankyou for taking the time to write such a lovely comment — full disclosure, I had doubts and thought other people might see my latest writing and think ‘what in the world is she doing on my lawn now’ haha.
Glenn and Ifalna are a rare pair that happened completely accidentally, it was only because the FF7 Timeline listed Aerith and Ifalna’s escape and Glenn’s mission in Rhadore as the same year that this even became a thing. The original ‘plan’ was actually for Glenn to adopt Aerith but one thing happened after the other and it turns out Ifalna going against the tragic dead parent trope and being allowed to be a person beyond ‘Aerith’s mother’ is a lot more interesting!
I’m surprised people have noticed them and that the reactions have been so good, so thankyou for sharing this! I’m very much biased and loving them but it gives me serotonin pings knowing others enjoy their story too.

I don't think I posted it here, but I will be slower in general for a couple weeks. I have been attempting to pick at stuff and things but stress is a killer for creativity, hoping to be more present again when I have an update on a family health matter.

It was her mother who approached her room first. The storm had well and truly blown over, so naturally Aerith was more affectionate and clingy. No extra punishments were tacked on to her little display but she was asked to go easy on Glenn.
He was doing his best and being a father to a teenager while balancing a rebellion meant he was sometimes at a loss about what to do. He'd much prefer the days he could plant her on his shoulders and do a walk-around — hell, he probably still could — though she brought the frustration of feeling cooped up all on herself.
Yet she still tried to lessen her punishment. She had cuddled up to Glenn a bit and looked at him with her big green eyes, asked all soft if she could go to the morning markets. He smiled all gentle... and told her to ask her mother, before tickling the mischief out of her.
Her morning freedom hinged on this dinner. "If you behave well for the rest of today and do as you're told, you might be allowed to spend time with Nanaki." Her mother could read her like an open book. Sure, she liked to look around at the stalls, but they weren't nearly as important to her as knocking around with her best friend.
She thought behaving well would come easy... until that boy walked into their home.
Aerith even gave a small glance out the window. Technically her mother cautioned she had to behave for the rest of today, and it was almost tonight...
Tumblr media
... she sighed a great big huff of hot air when the boy apologised. Whatever she bristled at was quickly escaping her. He was too nice and she didn't really want to mess up her slice of freedom. "Don't worry about it." she answered easily, though a smile tickled from her when she glanced back to him.
One step, two steps, and she held her hand out to the new face. "Nice to meet you...?" Well, surely he had to give her something. If not his real name, at least some code name. She couldn't call him boring again without stepping in it.
Boring? Well, it was an insult he had gotten a few times before during basic training. All because he kept nice and quiet and anonymous in the middle of the group, and refused to get into trouble or skip training. Boring. Boring was better than dead.
But the way Glenn yelled up at the girl made Kunsel blink; judging from her tantrum and his shout, they knew each other fairly well. In the next moment a lady had opened the house's door and she was definitely the girl's mom, or relation some how because they had similar features. But again Glenn's reaction to this lady told him volumes; these were people he knew very well.
Staying where he was beside Matt, Kunsel dipped his head into a respectful bow, not quite sure what she meant by the protectors leaping from walls. "Thank you, ma'am."
She spoke to Matt like she knew him too and Kunsel fund himself looking between both of his mentors, completely at a loss. He thought he was supposed to keep a low profile, but this woman and the shouting girl obviously knew the men. And he had thought the invitation for dinner only extended to them, but an hour or two later after he had settled into his accommodation, Kunsel frowned when Matt clapped a hand on his shoulder and steered him back to the house with the pretty flower-box. The nice lady opened the door again and ushered them in with a smile. Glenn was there too, eyes wary and there was something in his gaze that he couldn't place.
But he didn't have time to focus on that unknown because the girl was back again, eying him as she set the table.

Aerith wanted to be angry just as much as she wanted to cry her heart out and drown Zack in her tears. Either way, it was his black turtleneck that wore her emotions, between the stretched fibers where she gripped the fabric fiercely and the decidedly wet patch.
Though she didn't keep crying and crying. He wasn't dead, and her grief had no place here. That spike of emotion crashed into something shaky as it tried to even out again. At least she had a solid place to land. Her face nestled against his chest — he didn't smell like him though. There was a lack of Shinra's basic detergent on his clothes, no warm spice from his wildly applied body spray, not even basic sweat and grit from returning fresh, or ripe, from a long haul mission.
He was just. Clean. Save for the small transfer of her cheap perfume, a supposedly floral scent that disintegrated into something powdery the moment it clung to her skin, and perhaps a trailing scent of lilies upon his back.
There was almost nothing that indicated where he had been. Almost. Perhaps she was imagining it, there was a whisper of something that permeated the city. It was like mako, but not quite, like it hadn't been processed. It was hardly an answer at all.
Then Zack seemed to stir from his own shock. He lifted her so easily, so tenderly, and it was his turn to press his face close to seek the same comfort and stability she had grappled to find.
Aerith's fingers tangled and brushed through the hair at the base of his head. It was longer than she remembered. Her other hand splayed at his back and rubbed a soothing path up and down his spine. None of it makes any sense.
Not that it mattered. She offered a shaky smile and felt her anger begin to drain. After all she wasn't heartless, she didn't want him to cry, and her fingers worked free from his thick hair to try thumb and brush away some of those tears.
"I'm not that scary to look at, am I?" she teased, opting to take the edge off their emotional reunion. It was easier for her to smile or to laugh than it was to sit with emotions that were too real. "It's been five years... for me." If she were asked why, she wouldn't be able to give a straight answer about why she chose to clarify. She graciously dried her hand on her own jacket before she cupped his cheek again, and carefully her forehead rested to his.
Where have you been? What happened to you? Questions that were almost asked, but something a little selfish escaped instead. "You're not going to leave again, are you?"
Oh. Oh. Zack feels her hands in the front of his uniform, then her loud sniffling and quivering shoulders as she crushes herself against him.
All while he’s fighting the vague urge to hurl his guts all over the garden. She probably wouldn’t appreciate that very much after putting so much work into their care. So, green in the face and very nauseous from the journey that stretched both lifetimes and the blink of an eye, Zack tentatively wraps his arms around Aerith’s waist and holds her. Long enough for the sobs to subside, for the roiling in his stomach to clear, for him to figure out an answer to Aerith’s question himself.
What happened?
He’s been stuck as soulstuff long enough to know that wherever this was, it wasn’t the Lifestream, it wasn’t even the Lifestream’s approximation of Aerith’s church. Zack drops his cheek onto Aerith’s head, gently, then turns to breathe in her scent. It was…the real deal. All of it. Her. The flowers, the church.
He understood too late. Just as she intended, he supposes. That little minx. He almost wants to cry as he lifts Aerith off her feet, linking his hands together against the back of her dress to form a seat for her as he buries his face against his collarbone. And then he does cry, wetting the collar of her jacket with his own sobs.
“You…You brought me here,” he manages, which is as much of an explanation that he can piece together while his face decides to turn up the waterworks. Zack pulls back far enough to squint at her through a long, ugly sniff.
He doesn’t know the when of it exactly, but he can guess, and the likeliest possibility makes his heart ache.
“Long time no see, beautiful.”
