Artist Statement
Final Project:聽
Cater to You
For my final project installation, re-imagining space, I have created a controversial piece that addresses our current social and political issues. I wanted it to be known how women in society are left to feel guilty, have more responsibility, and are not catered to. All of the products shown are things women have to purchase, for example, when menstruation comes around, all of the products are expensive. It is up to the viewer to see the clues and determine if an abortion was taken. I supported that thought by manipulating a tampon dispensary and聽exchanged that for a wire hanger dispensary.聽
I have also addressed gun rights and abortion rights side by side using the objects of dispensaries. In simpler terms, as easy as it is to buy guns, just see how easy it can be for women to do what is best for them even when safety is problematic to their lives.聽聽
For the men's restroom I have displayed a very well kept and catered environment to portray how the lives of men are easier. I have added a complimentary cigarette dispenser. The gun advertisements are positive and show families smiling. Compared to the women's dispensary, the advertisements are very unforgiving and forced.聽
I did not add any text to my subjects. The process was very heavy, especially when I spray painted the water guns and the fake blood. I wish I had a better environment to portray public restrooms. I do not intend it to be frightening, but just to portray the truth.聽
